Bertha M. Fischer, 95
Bertha M. Fischer, 95, of River Falls, formerly of Ellsworth and Milltown, died Feb. 26, 1998, at The Lutheran Home: River Falls.
The daughter of Bernhardt F. and Bertha J. (Lehmann) Fischer, she was born Sept. 5, 1902, in the town of Salem in Pierce County. She married Louis Fischer on June 15, 1927.
She taught for many years in Pierce and Burnett counties. Later she learned the barbering trade, enabling her to work next to her husband in shops located in Webster, Danbury and finally their own in Milltown.
She had been living at the WelLHaven senior apartments and most recently at The Lutheran Home. She was a member of Milltown Lutheran Church, the Retired Teachers, Order of the Eastern Star and the Milltown Senior Citizens. She enjoyed gardening and entertaining.
She was preceded in death by her husband Louis; and brother Reinhart.
She is survived by two brothers and a sister-in-law: the Rev. Walter and Arlene Fischer of Arlington, Minn., and Arthur Fischer of Ellsworth; four sisters: Erna Fischer of St. Paul, Louise Kind of Hager City, Martha Wille of West Bend, and Florence Wirth of Ellsworth; and one sister-in-law Marie Fischer of Ellsworth.
The funeral was Feb. 28 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Ellsworth, with the Rev. J. Keith Trembath officiating.
Burial of cremated remains will be in St. Paul's Cemetery at a later date.

Viola D. Kanten, 81
Viola D. Kanten, 81, died Monday, March 2, 1998, at The Lutheran Home: River Falls, where she had lived since 1995.
She was born in South Dakota on July 23, 1916, to Tilda and Otto Friberg. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, she taught home economics for many years.
She married Glen Kanten in 1941. In the 1970s she operated a nursery school in Minneapolis and in later years, she and Glen owned the Circle K Orchard near Beldenville.
She is survived by her husband, Glen; her daughter, Glenise and Gary Beltz of White Bear Lake, Minn.; her sons, Tom and Melody Kanten of Baldwin, and Steve and Karen Kanten of Park City, Utah; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life on Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson Funeral Home in River Falls.
Memorial donations in her name are requested to the Alzheimer's Association or to The Lutheran Home: River Falls.

Blanche B. Wakefield, 61
Blanche B. Wakefield, 61, of River Falls died Tuesday, March 3, 1998 at the River Falls Area Hospital.
She was born in Pepin County in Durand on June 10, 1936, the daughter of Leo and Clara (Weissinger) Hayden. She married Louis Wakefield at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Durand on Aug. 30, 1954.
She was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Brady Louis Wakefield; her parents, Leo and Clara Hayden; and her siblings: Edward, Walter, Gilbert, Bernard, Arnold, Isabelle, Ilene and Lorinna.
She is survived by her husband, Louis, of River Falls; her children: Robert and Shannon Wakefield of River Falls, Dennis and Tina Wakefield of Hammond, Bonnie and Stephen Phillips of River Falls, Patty Jo and Craig Bakke of Baldwin, Sheila and Fred Hansen of Ellsworth, Donna and Tracy Houff of Austin, Minn.; and 15 grandchildren.
Funeral was Friday, March 6, at St. Bridget Catholic Church with Fr. Gerald Harris officiating. Interment was in Arkansaw Cemetery in Arkansaw.
Pallbearers were Nicholas Phillips, Nathaniel Phillips, Ryan Wakefield, Danny Bakke, Todd Bakke, Christopher Wakefield, and Phillip Hodges.
Cashman Mortuary provided arrangements.

Dennis S. Larson, 73
Dennis S. Larson, 73, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998 at his home.
He spent all of his life in River Falls and was a lifelong member of Ezekiel Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed.
He joined the U.S. Navy and was trained as a pilot, which probably explained his fascination with planes and flying. He never missed an opportunity to go out to the River Falls airport, especially when his nephew, Jon Markuson, buzzed the house with his helicopter.
He also had a successful boxing career in the Navy, being undefeated for 3 years. Although he was fierce in the ring, he was a gentle and loving husband, father, and a friend to many.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he came back to River Falls and married Donna Jenson in 1949. From this union, one daughter was born, Susan.
The couple was married for 41 years before Donna's death in 1990.
He was a carpenter by trade, working as an independent contractor in River Falls before becoming a superintendent for commercial contractors in the Twin Cities. Through the years he was an active member of the American Legion and the 40 et 8, serving as Chef De Gar in 1990-91.
He will be missed by many. He was a "people person" and always ready with a joke or to lend a helping hand.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; his mother, Gunda Hilson; his father, Louis Larson; his brother, George; his sisters: Lilian, Haide, Esther and Grace; his nephews: Larry and Jim Larson, David and Michael Markuson, and Steve Cina.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan and Bruce Mueller of River Falls; his brother, Dick and Doris Larson of River Falls; his sisters: Dora Markuson of St. Paul, Violet and Frank Geer of Shoreview, Minn., his sister-in-law, Beverly and Tom Lowe of River Falls, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral was Saturday, March 21, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Bill Montgomery officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Military honors were provided by the River Falls American Legion Post #121.
Cashman Mortuary provided arrangements.

Auguste J. Moldenhauer, 89
Auguste J. Moldenhauer, 89, of River Falls, formerly of St. Paul, died at The Lutheran Home: River Falls on Wednesday, March 18, 1998.
She was known as "Gustel" and was born in Germany on Aug. 18, 1908, the daughter of Friedrich Birth and Johnne Bohnke Birth. She married Walter Moldenhauer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in 1924.
She is survived by her nephew, Richard and Mary Moldenhauer.
Funeral was Tuesday, March 24, at Cashman Mortuary. Interment was to be Wednesday, March 25, at the Evergreen Cemetery in St. Paul.

Eugene Peter Nolen
Eugene Peter Nolen, 72, died at his home in River Falls on Tuesday, March 17, 1998.
He was born in 1926 in St. Cloud, Minn. He served during World War II from 1944-46 in the 11th Airborne Division. He graduated from St. John's University and went on to teach in many towns until settling down at the UW-River Falls English Department in 1964. He retired in 1988.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Fr. Andrew Nolen; and two sisters: Marie Nolen Braun and Genivieve Nolen Faith.
He is survived by his brothers: Julius Nolen of St. Louis, and Cyril Nolen of Marlboro, N.Y.; his sisters: Lore Nolen Hommerding of St. Cloud, Minn., Alice Nolen Meyer of Demarest, N.J., Vera Nolen Hahn of Shoreview, Minn.; his children: Ninette Nolen of St. Paul, Timothy Nolen of Spring Valley, Michelle Nolen-Karras of Cazenovia, Tom Nolen and Ted Nolen, both of Maplewood, Minn.; and nine grandchildren from ages 9 months to 20 years old.
A memorial service was held at St. Bridget Catholic Church on Saturday, March 21. Friends gathered at the church before the service and attended lunch following.

Mavis M. Rudiger, 78
Mavis M. Merriman Rudiger, 78, of Menomonie, died Sunday, March 22, 1998 at her home in Menomonie, after a battle with cancer, her family at her side.
The former Mavis Marie Merriman was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Ellsworth in Pierce County, to Arvia and Inez (Roatch) Merriman. She was raised in Ellsworth and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1938.
Most of her younger years were spent in Ellsworth, where she owned and operated the Little Grand Cafe in Ellsworth. She later worked at the Hudson Harbor in Hudson and as a waitress at the Flame Lounge in Menomonie. She enjoyed the dances at the old Ellsworth Pavillion.
She married Eugene Rudiger on Feb. 18, 1946, in Menomonie. She had four sons: Jerry of Copper Hills, Va., Lee and Marilyn of Menomonie, Steve and DiAnn of Menomonie, and Tom of Jackson, Minn.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed raising her family. She was a member of the Hudson Road Homemakers and Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She loved bowling and bowled in the Bowlerettes League. She was also an avid Packer fan and stock car racing fan.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family. She will be missed by family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Donna Jean Pierson; two brothers: Lee and Rex; a niece, Lila Merriman Clay; a nephew, Terry Merriman; and a great-nephew, Randy Merriman.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene Rudiger of Menomonie; four sons: Jerry Rudiger of Copper Hill, Va., Lee and Marilyn Rudiger of Menomonie, Tom Rudiger of Jackson, Minn., and Steve and DiAnn Rudiger of Menomonie; 12 grandchildren: James, Alicia, Terra and Gaia Rudiger, Kurt and Donna Rudiger, Jeffrey and Jessica Rudiger, Mark and Jennifer Rudiger, Thom J. Rudiger, Angela and Todd Hamlett, Tina, Heidi and Mindy Rudiger; three great-grandchildren: Taylor, Hayley and Gavin Rudiger; four brothers and two sisters: Maxine and Paul Buck of Roberts, Ramona "Monie" Merriman of River Falls, Bill and Louise Merriman of Hayward, Everal "Bud" and Donna Merriman of Couderay, Max and Betty Merriman of River Falls, Merlin and Bonnie Merriman of Baldwin; a sister-in-law, Jean Merriman of River Falls; sister and brother-in-laws Phyllis and Fritz Shock, Barbie and Willard Hintz of Menomonie, Pat and Wes Swenty of Eau Claire, many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral was to be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 25, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Menomonie, with the Rev. John Mikkelson officiating. Burial was to be in Mamre Cemetery in the town of Menomonie.
Pallbearers were: grandsons Kurt, Jeff, and Mark Rudiger; granddaughters: Tina Rudiger and Angela Hamlett; and family friend Dan Proudlock.
