William G. Clark, 91
William Grant Clark, 91, a resident of Hudson for over 61 years, died at his apartment in Wintergreen on Thursday, April 16, 1998.
Bill was born on April 19, 1906, at Chariton, the son of pioneers Harry and Lena (Barstow) Clark. He attended the rural school near Chariton. He read many books, especially the Bible, and praised his own form of education of "learning by living."
He was quoted, "My education was practical work. You learn a lot by keeping your mouth shut, your ears open and paying attention to everything _ there's a college education in the Bible if you can analyze it."
In 1916 the Clark family moved to Rice Lake. At age 12, with his three brothers and a sister, he performed the work men often did. He would ride horseback to gather the cattle and then do his own laundry in a nearby creek.
He also worked for a time at a brickyard and sawmill near Cumberland. During the 1920s, he was a farm foreman for a mental institution near Madison which involved prisoners doing therapy work on a farm.
He then came to Hudson in 1937 and worked for over 5 years at the Omaha Railroad shops (CSTPM&O) in North Hudson. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army at Milwaukee and served with the 34th Medical Ambulance Company as a paramedic in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of World War II. While serving, he was injured in a truck accident where many men died. He was flown back to the United States to a Staten Island, N.Y. hospital, and later transferred to Billings General Hospital at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind. He was discharged on June 15, 1944.
He married Irene Jeenie Frazier on Jan. 10, 1940, in Stillwater, Minn.
He went back to the railroad shops in North Hudson until 1950 when he took a maintenance position until his retirement in 1975. Retirement did not stop him from working, as he then moved into the landscaping and yard grading business in the Hudson area.
His interests included his fly tying. He recalled using chicken feathers and cotton balls when there was a shortage of materials. He also enjoyed photography and owned a number of cameras and equipment. He carried in his pocket a photo of himself roping a "wild horse" taken in 1917.
Bird-watching and fishing were also enjoyed in his retirement. Living in Wintergreen with his small electric scooter, he was always willing to give small children a ride.
