Virgil Jessie Chilson
PRESCOTT - Virgil Jessie Chilson of Prescott died on Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at the St. Croix Care Center in Prescott. He was 72.
He was born April 24, 1925, in Warroad, Minn., the son of Herman and Anna (Roy) Chilson. He married Lorraine Jackson Sept. 22, 1943. She died in 1990.
He worked as a cook for the Green Parrot Restaurant in Rochester, Minn. He also worked construction for many years. He always welcomed those who were in need into his home, no one was turned away. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include: eight children, Virgil (Marilyn) Chilson of Oronoco, Minn., Sammy Chilson of Dodge Center, Minn., Wayne II (Charlotte) Chilson of Ellsworth, Edd (Wanda) Chilson of Chatfield, Minn., Karen (Bruce) Burgdorf of Waseca, Minn., Jim Chilson of Austin, Minn., Karla Olson of Red Wing and Jason Chilson of Ellsworth; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Loren (Marge) Chilson and Elton Chilson, both of Pine Island, Minn.; four sisters, Melva Eberhardt of Kasson, Minn., Venetta MacGowan of Buckley, Minn., Darlene (Rick) Tchrochet of Maple Valley, Minn., and Lorna (Richard) Bennett of Las Vegas; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and one grandson, Sam.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 12, at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home in Ellsworth with Rev. David Roberts officiating. Burial was at the Othello Cemetery in Manor, Minn.
Elaine (Danielson) Empey
Elaine (Danielson) Empey died on Dec. 28, 1997. She was 81.
She was born in Ellsworth Township on Dec. 23, 1916 to Alvina and Edwin Danielson. She was baptized and confirmed at South Rush River Church. She attended school at Freier and Ellsworth High School. She worked as a nurse in Minneapolis before her marriage.
She married Clare Empey in Minneapolis on Nov. 2, 1947. They were married 33 years before his death in 1980.
She is survived by one daughter, Jan and her husband Dave Nelson; two grandchildren, Mandy and Tyman; three sisters, Yvonne Taylor of Seattle, Enid Davidson of Ellsworth and Nonnette Johnson of Ellsworth; two stepsons, Donald and Richard Empey.
A memorial services was held Jan. 3 in Ellsworth.
Roy Bartlett
Roy Bartlett of Newburg, Mo., and formerly of Ellsworth, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla, Mo. He was 75.
He was born Sept. 4, 1922, in Ellsworth to Ralph and Alda Bartlett. He married Laura Bartlett Sept. 6, 1944 in St. Louis, Mo.
He is survived by: his wife; one son, Garry (Rose) of Linn, Mo.; five daughters, Sherry (Junior) of Newburg, Patricia (Donald) Gaehle of Mt. Sterling, Mo., Janice (Carl) Ruskaup of Florissant, Mo., Joyce (Roger) Heflin of Rolla and Anita (Clinton) Bartlett of Newburg; one sister, Lucille Thuman of Minnesota; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were: one sister, two brothers and one grandchild.
Funeral services were on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Null and Son Chapel in Rolla with the Rev. Danny Kemp officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Vida, Mo.
Gerald (Jerry) Rasmussen
Gerald (Jerry) Rasmussen of Maplewood, Minn., died on Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998. He was 61.
He is survived by: his wife, Beverly (formerly of Ellsworth); and sons, Scott and Jeff; sister, Doris (Luther Barness); brothers, Dick (Betty), Gordon (Eneeda), Robert (Janet) and Roger Rasmussen; many nieces and nephews in Northfield, Minn.
He was preceded in death by: his mother, Lillian and father, Anton; sister, Jeanette (Al Lewandowski).
Funeral services were at Sandberg Mortuary, 7th Ave. and Charles St., No. St. Paul, Minn. Interment was in St. Paul United Church of Christ Cemetery in Ellsworth.
Memorials are preferred for family in lieu of flowers.
Scott Gilles
PRESCOTT - Scott Gilles of Prescott died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998 at United Hospital, St. Paul, Minn. He was 44.
He was born Jan. 13, 1954 the son of Marvin and Nina (Sweeney) Gilles. He was born and raised in the Plum City community. He graduated from Plum City High School in 1972. He married Connie Hartung Jan. 12, 1974 in Eau Galle.
He loved life. He was a very caring husband, father, son and brother. He loved music, hunting and fishing. He played bass guitar for the "Midnight Special" (formerly the "Soul Pipers") for over 25 years.
He is survived by his wife, Connie; two sons, Bryon (Roxanne) and Joe, both of Prescott, Amanda of Prescott; his parents, Marvin and Nina Gilles of Plum City; two sisters, Madrene (Neil) Nitikowski of Kansas City, Mo., Marsha (John) Paulbrick of St. Paul; two brothers, Kent (Diane) Gilles and Brad Gilles, all of Plum City.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, and his mother and father-in-law, Wayne and Dolores Hartung.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Prescott. Rev. Thomas Manion will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the church in Prescott.

Gertrude Katherine Hines
Gertrude Katherine Hines of El Paso Township died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at the Ellsworth Care Center, Ellsworth. She was 85.
She was born Sept. 12, 1912, the daughter of Jake and Lena (Dettling) Bechel at Plum City. She was baptized and confirmed at Plum City and a long-time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Spring Valley.
On Sept. 10, 1935, she married Edward Hines at Plum City. They were blessed with five children: Geraldine, Eldon, Marian, Robert and Joanne. They farmed near Plum City for a while and farmed most of their married life in El Paso.
Survivors include: two sons and two daughters, Eldon (Mary) Hines of Ellsworth, Robert Hines of Eau Galle, Marian (Vernon) Schoeder of Elmwood and Joanne (Scott) Gulbranson of Ellsworth; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were: her parents; her husband, Edward; one daughter, Geraldine Lynner; one granddaughter, Karla Mae Lynner; and two brothers, Ralph and Jake Bechel.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Spring Valley. Father George Becker officiated the service, assisted by Sister Karen Freund. Music was provided by organist Ellen Rominski and the Sacred Heart Choir. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Spring Valley. Bearers were: Justin Johnson, Keith Hines, Jeff Hines, Brad Johnson, Chad Johnson, Scott Schoeder and Steve Schoeder.

John Ernest Kind, Jordan Tower II
John Ernest Kind, Jordan Tower II, Red Wing, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Hi-Park Care Center. He was 94.
He was born Oct. 30, 1903, in Hartland Township, the son of Emil and Albertina (Greske) Kind. He attended Conroy School, Hartland Township.
He married Hannah C. Nelson on March 2, 1929, in Red Wing. They owned and operated the Svea Store until 1940. They farmed in Trenton Township until moving to Red Wing in the winter of 1981. She died Feb. 2, 1997.
He was a member of Svea Lutheran Church, where he served on the church board. He served as clerk and supervisor of the Trenton Township board, on the Hager City Telephone Board, St. John's Hospital Board, Pierce County Welfare Board and Pierce County Board of Supervisors. He was a member of the U.S. FHA Committee. He worked for Goodhue County (Minn.) ASCS as a land surveyor. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and playing cards.
He is survived by: one daughter, Laura Waldron (Ronald) Anderson of Ellsworth; one son, Clifton (Joan) Kind of Mankato, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews; five sisters-in-law, Louise Kind of Hager City, Gladys Kind of River Falls, Lillian Nelson of Ellsworth and Ella Johnsen and Ann Nelson, both of Red Wing.
He was preceded by: two brothers, Albert and George Kind; and four sisters, Rose Kind, Clara Peterson, Irene Kind and Emma Lindquist.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 31, at Svea Lutheran Church, with Rev. Edward Groop officiating. Burial was in the Svea Lutheran Cemetery in Trenton Township. Pallbearers were: grandchildren, Capt. Timothy Strusz, Tracey Strusz, Thomas Strusz, Dan Kind, Charles Kind and Steven Kind. Honorary bearers were: grandchildren, Susan Sebion, Cathy Nordenskjold, Michael Strusz, Jeffrey Strusz, Todd Strusz, Arn Kind and John Kind.
