Carol M. VanSchoonhoven, 66
ELMWOOD - Carol M. VanSchoonhoven, age 66, of Elmwood died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
She was born July 17, 1933, in the Eau Galle area, the daughter of Earl and Laura (Fuhrman) Stringer. She attended and graduated from Elmwood High School in 1951. She worked as a bookkeeper for Richartz Implement in Menomonie for several years. She married Gene VanSchoonhoven Nov. 26, 1955. After marriage, they made their home in Elmwood. She was the bookkeeper for the Elmwood United Methodist Church in Elmwood for over 20 years. Due to having Multiple Sclerosis, she became a resident of the Heritage of Elmwood for the past 4-1/2 years. While she was a resident there, she always helped the staff at various activities. She kept busy doing embroidery and puzzles. She will be missed by her family and the residents and staff at the Heritage of Elmwood.
She is survived by: her husband, Gene; two daughters, Barb (Scott) Supri and Brenda (William) Karnes, both of Spring Valley; a son, Michael VanSchoonhoven of Spring Valley; four grandchildren; her mother, Laura Stringer of Elmwood; three brothers, Donald Stringer of Kingston, Okla., James Stringer of Spring Valley, Leon Stringer of Menomonie; two sisters, Violet Leehe of Velpin, Ind., and Diane Gibson of Elmwood.
Her father, a daughter, Betty VanSchoonhoven, and one sister, Joyce Seipel, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 21, at the United Methodist Church in Elmwood with Rev. Joel Certa-Werner officiating. Burial was in the Poplar Hill Cemetery-Rock Elm, rural Elmwood.

Joyce A. Nelson, 71
STOCKHOLM - Joyce A. Nelson, age 71, Stockholm, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Pepin Manor in Pepin.
She was born March 31, 1928, in Red Wing to Ben and Fritzella (Heins) Rigelman. She graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1946 and was in the women's chorus for the productions of "The New Moon" and "Naughty Marietta" at the Sheldon Theatre.
She married Clemens G. Nelson June 26, 1954, in Stockholm. They farmed together in the Lund area for 45 years. A member of Sabylund Lutheran Church in Stockholm, she also belonged to the church women and Maiden Rock American Legion. She collected dolls and enjoyed ice skating and gardening.
She is survived by: her husband; and one brother, Marv (Delma) Rigelman of Red Wing.
She was preceded in death by: one brother, Duane.
Funeral was Saturday, Jan. 22, at Sabylund Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lynne Rigg officiating. A spring burial will be in Sabylund Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Bruce, Keven, Marty and Kollin Nelson, Karl Rigelman, Mike Meier, Bobby Stein and Greg Bauer.

Francis B. Shafer, 80
ELMWOOD - Francis B. Shafer, age 80, of Elmwood died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
He was born Oct. 1, 1919, the son of Joseph and Ida (Ader) Shafer. He was born, raised and lived his entire life in the Town of Eau Galle, Dunn County. He married Joan Sperger on June 25, 1946, at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Eau Galle. After marriage, they lived and farmed on the home farm in Eau Galle.
He is survived by: his wife, Joan; one son, Rick (Teresa) of White Bear Lake, Minn.; two daughters, Mary (Kevin Matthews) Shafer of Falcon Heights, Minn., and Nancy (Robert) Zawacki of Sauk Rapids, Minn.; six grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Shafer of St. Paul and Edith Zeilinger of Flint, Mich.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; one brother, Lloyd; and one sister, Evelyn.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 17, at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Eau Galle. Rev. Roy Mish officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Howard N. Whipple, 69
BAY CITY - Howard Norman Whipple, age 69, formerly of Bay City, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Suburban Medical Center.
He was born June 9, 1930, in Bay City to John and Elsie (Sandstrom) Whipple.
He is survived by: his wife, Shirley (Hanson) Whipple of Mancos, Colo.; his children, Dennis of Los Angeles, Howard (Jerilyn) of Cortez, Colo., Sharlott (Tom) Thomas and Catherine (James) Helmer, both of Mancos, Julie (Holland) Shepherd of Santa Fe, N.M., Darla (Dave) Frain of Wichita, Kan., Connie (Rob) Seader of Silverdale, Wash., Michelle (Clarence) Strohm of West Jordan, Utah, and Rosemary (Les) Spraker of Springfield, Va.; 18 grandchildren; one sister, Rossell Hoyt of Mancos; and two brothers, Charles of Durand and Jim of Randolph, Minn.
Funeral was Dec. 11 at Mancos United Methodist Church. Burial was in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Merlin Pofahl, 72
PRESCOTT - Merlin Pofahl, age 72, of Star, N.C., died of small cell cancer Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at a hospital in Star.
He was born May 30, 1927, in Red Wing to Arthur and Edna Pofahl and graduated from Prescott High School. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served during World War II. He then moved to Star.
He is survived by: his wife, Elizabeth; one sister, Live Johnson of Red Wing; one niece and one nephew; one sister-in-law, Marie Pofahl of Lake City, Minn.
Preceding him in death were: two brothers, Lee and Irvin, and one sister, Alice.
Burial was Wednesday, Jan. 19, in Memorial Park Cemetery, Asheboro, N.C.
Arrangements were handled by Phillips Funeral Home in Star.
Emil Hanson, 95
SPRING VALLEY - Emil Hanson, age 95, of Spring Valley died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at the Spring Valley Health Care Center.
He was born Oct. 29, 1904, the son of Andrew and Marie (Edvardatter Hanson) Hanson at Hudson.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Spring Valley in his younger years and has been a long time member of Rush River Lutheran Church, rural River Falls.
His mother died when he was three-years-old and he was raised by Ole Skinnes. He grew up north of Spring Valley in Eau Galle Township and attended Wildwood school. He enjoyed baseball and played on the Wildwood baseball team.
He served in the U. S. Army during WWI. After the service, he worked a short time for Douglas Air Craft in California. He moved back to Wisconsin, where he farmed and also worked painting homes and farms. He was an avid gardener and still enjoyed baseball.
Survivors include: nine nieces and nephews; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were: his parents; three brothers, Hans, Marcus and Ingvald Hanson; and one sister, Alma Hanson.
Visitation was to be held Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Rush River Lutheran Church, rural River Falls. Rev. John Sutherland will officiate the services. Music will be provided by organist David Westbrook with congregational singing. Spring burial will be in Martell Lutheran Cemetery, Martell Township.
Bearers will be: Levan Kveren-ckiladze, Mark Poff, Bill Christenson, Marus Poff, Eric Poff and Christopher Fasching.

Berkeley Alexander, 68
HAGER CITY - Berkeley Alexander, 68, Hager City, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital.
He was born Nov. 20, 1931, in Red Wing to Clinton and Elfrieda (Nietz) Alexander. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1949 and from the University of Minnesota in 1958 with a degree in pharmacy.
He served for two years in the Army during the Korean conflict. He worked at Claydon's Pharmacy before entering the service and then returned there to work until 1969. He then worked as a pharmacist at Red Wing Corner Drug until October 1999. He was a member of the Minnesota Pharmaceutical Association.
On Aug. 11, 1962, he married Margaret "Peg" Eggers in Waconia, Minn. He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, where he held several positions. Since 1969, he had been treasurer of the Concordia-Immanuel Lutheran School. He was presently serving on Concordia's Building Committee. He also was active with the Boy Scouts of America and reactivated the Community Adult Camera Club.
He is survived by: his wife, two daughters, Gwen Brenner of Hager City and Dawn (Steve) Stuhr of Boynton Beach, Fla.; one grandson; two nephews; his mother-in-law, Lydia Eggers of Red Wing; and a brother- and sister-in-law, Dave (Judy) Eggers of Minnetonka, Minn.
Funeral was Monday at Concordia Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ron Stehr officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester, Minn. Memorials are preferred to Concordia Lutheran Church building fund, the school or donor's choice.
