George J. Nelson, 85
George J. Nelson, age 85, of River Falls, died on Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at River Falls Area Hospital.
He farmed most of his life in Hartland Township and worked for the Pierce County Highway Department for 10 years, was a Drake School board member, Hartland Township chairman, on the Board of Directors for Ellsworth Farmers Union and on the Pierce County Highway Commissioners Board.
He is survived by: wife, Elsie C. Nelson; sons, James, Robert (Margaret), Ruth (Dave) McWain, Ann Dusek and Jane (Jerry) Schmidt; brother, Gordon (Gloria) Nelson; sister, Rose Hylle; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Kenneth; son-in-law, Tom Dusek; daughter-in-law, Thorild Nelson; and granddaughter, Julie Nelson.
Funeral services were to be held Tuesday at Ezekiel Lutheran Church in River Falls with Rev. William Montgomery officiating. Burial was to be at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Ellsworth.
Arrangements were by Hill Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
Elsie A. Voth, 83
HAGER CITY - Elsie A. Voth, age 83, of Red Wing died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital after suffering a stroke Sunday.
She was born Jan. 8, 1917, in Hager City to Henry and Minnie (Decker) Meyer. Her father died when she was in grade school and the family moved to Red Wing when she was a teenager.
She married Raymond Voth May 27, 1939, in Red Wing. He died in 1992. A member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek, Minn., she enjoyed reading, crocheting and puzzles.
She is survived by: her children, Frederick (Kay) of Owatonna, Minn., Dr. Marcus (Karen) of Buffalo, Minn., Victory (Sheryl) and Rebecca Kirtz, both of Red Wing, Renata "Sue" (Dave) Seitzer of St. Peter, Minn., Rosalie (Jerry) Kohn of Red Wing and Craig "Pete" (Kim) of Alexandria, Va.; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were: her husband; one daughter, Ramona; and one sister, Ann.
Funeral was Saturday, Jan. 22, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hay Creek, with the Rev. Jonathan Nack officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Eric, Dan, Peter, David and Jon Voth, and Benji Kohn. Honorary pallbearers were: Kristin Voth, Jessica and Amanda Kirtz, Sara Kroll, Jamie Kohn, Katie, Calie and Tressa Seitzer. Memorials are preferred to the church or the donor's choice.

John C. Nichols, 46
PRESCOTT - Lt. Col. John Clair Nichols, age 46, of Charleston, S.C., died suddenly at his residence on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000.
He was born on Jan. 1, 1954, in Julesburg, Colo., the son of James Howard and Virginia (LaLonde) Nichols. He attended elementary school in Pocotello, Idaho, and graduated from Ogden High School in Utah. Following high school, he received his nursing degree from Weber State College in Ogden and his bachelor's in nursing from the University of Missouri. Later, he received his master's degree in administration from the University of Utah. At the time of his death, he was attending classes at Vanderbilt University to be a practitioner nurse.
On March 14, 1974, he married Rita M. Lyksett in Ogden. They had two children, Brandi and Andy. The couple divorced in 1979.
In 1975, he enlisted in the Armed Forces and served in the Air Force. He was career military and, through dedication and schooling, worked his way to Lieutenant Colonel prior to his honorable discharge in 1995. During his career as a nurse with the Air Force, he was stationed in Utah, Michigan, Illinois and South Carolina. He served overseas during Desert Storm in the Gulf.
He enjoyed working with wood and made various furniture for family and friends. He enjoyed the companion of his cats, as they would accompany him wherever he was stationed. He was very dedicated to his job and took great pride in serving his country.
He is survived by: his children, Brandi (Jason) Raverty of Prescott and Andy R. Nichols of Hudson; grandchild, Madeline Raverty of Prescott; brothers, Leo (Jane) Nichols of Clive, Ida., Howard (Jane) Nichols of Virginia; sister, Myrna (Tony) Moulton of Eagle River, Alaska; former wife, Rita (Lyksett) Nichols of North Hudson; and sister-in-law, Maria Nichols of Miami, Okla.; as well as nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donald.
Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 31, at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. Officiating will be Fr. Gerald Harris of St. Bridget's Catholic Church in River Falls. His family and friends will serve as active casketbearers. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Air Force. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home in Hudson.

Phillip J. Richie, 71
Phillip J. Richie, age 71, of Ellsworth died early Tuesday morning, Feb. 1, 2000.
Funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church. Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 3, from 4-8 p.m. and one hour before services Friday at the church.

Clara E. Bryan, 90
RED WING - Clara Elnora Bryan, age 90, of Red Wing and formerly of Menomonie, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Hi-Park Care Center, where she lived since November 1998. She moved to Red Wing in October 1997.
She was born Sept. 9, 1909, in Huron, S.D., to Lyman and Augusta (Schlichting) Gregory. She married Darrel Bryan June 6, 1928, in South Dakota. They moved to Menomonie in 1936, where they worked. They also worked for West CAP for several years. He died in 1981.
She enjoyed camping, fishing and reading. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Menomonie.
Survivors include: four sons, Darrel Jr. (JoAnn) of Barron, Lyman (Darlene) of Durand, Clarence (Ann) of Menomonie and Ronald (Arlene) of Eau Claire; one daughter, Elnora (Oscar) Pearson of Red Wing; 17 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, an infant son, two grandchildren, one brother and two sisters.
A memorial service was held at Immanuel Baptist Church in Menomonie on Sunday, Jan. 16, with the Rev. Kenneth Owens officiating. Burial of cremains will be in Christ Lutheran/Halvorson Cemetery in the spring. Her eight grandsons were honorary pallbearers.
Wesley O. O'Bryan, 47
ELMWOOD - Wesley L. O'Bryan, age 47, of Spring Lake Township, rural Elmwood, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital in Red Wing.
He was born Nov. 5, 1952, in Menomonie, the son of Lloyd and Opal (Hintzman) O'Bryan. He grew up in the Elmwood area, attending elementary and high school in Elmwood. He married Patricia Schlosser on June 29, 1971, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood. They made their home just outside of Elmwood in the Township of Spring Lake. He worked at Summit Cheese Factory for 20 years and was presently employed at Dayco PTI in Red Wing.
He is survived by: his wife, Pat; one son, Shane O'Bryan of Menomonie; seven sisters, Charlotte Smith and Shirley Link, both of Menomonie, Darlene Hintzman and Pat Ellefson, both of Barns, Ardith Smith and Virginia Langer, both of Elmwood, and Velma Britton of Hager City; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
His parents and one nephew, Dana Smith, preceded him in death.
Memorial services were Saturday, Jan. 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood with Rev. Varkey Velickakathu officiating.

Mildred E. Drewiske, 66
Mildred Elaine Drewiske, age 66, of Ellsworth died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at her home.
She was born May 2, 1933, in the Big River area of Pierce County to Ben and Mary (Reis) Cobian. They moved to a farm near River Falls. She was a 1951 graduate of River Falls High School.
She married Bernard Drewiske Aug. 16, 1952, in River Falls. They lived in Prescott. In 1954, they moved to Chippewa Falls, and settled in Ellsworth in 1957.
She was active in 4-H, Pierce County Homemakers, St. Francis Altar and Rosary Society and choir, American Legion Auxiliary and Pierce County 40/8. In 1979, she received her licensed practical nursing degree from Red Wing Vo-Tech. She worked at Kinnic Long Term Care in River Falls until retiring in 1995. She enjoyed sewing, making crafts and traveling.
Survivors include: her husband, Bernard of Ellsworth; seven children, Michael (Susan) of Bozeman, Mont., David (Karen) of Hudson, James (Bobbi) of Virginia Beach, Va., Roger (Judy) of Hudson, Tom (Janet) of Chanhassen, Minn., Mary (Robin) Peters of Ocala, Fla., Ann (John) Meagher of Hudson; 21 grandchildren; four brothers, Herbert (Irma) Cobian of Delavan, Kenneth (Susan) Cobian of St. Anthony, Minn., Bernard Cobian of River Falls and Francis (Joyce) Cobian of Sheboygan; two sisters, Marion (Joe) Neaton of Watertown, Minn., Marlys (Herbert) Tauchen of Bonduel.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; one sister, Bernadine; and one brother, Norman.
Funeral was Saturday, Jan. 29, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Thomas Donaldson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: grandsons, Andy, Aaron, Christopher, Davis, Jeff, Mark and Steve Drewiske. Honorary pallbearers were: grandchildren, Daniel, Greg, Jacob, Matheu, Patrick and Phillip Drewiske, and Justin Meagher.
