Sister Vivian Huppert, FSPA, 83
Sister Vivian Huppert, FSPA, age 83, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse. She was in the 64th year of her religious profession.
She was born the seventh of nine children, four sons and five daughters, to Peter and Mathilda (Bednar) Huppert on Dec. 27, 1916, in Big River. She was baptized Mathilda at St. Mary's Church, Big River, on New Year's Day. Her mother consecrated the new baby girl to Mary, Mother of God. Living out this consecration, Mathilda had a lifelong devotion to Mary and attributed her miraculous recovery from diphtheria at age three and her religious vocation to Mary. After completing the elementary grades and one year of high school at St. Mary's, Mathilda, with her cousins, the future Sister Elvira Huppert, FSPA (d.1993), and Sister Hope Gutting, FSPA, entered St. Rose Convent on Aug. 16, 1932.
Mathilda was received into the novitiate and given the name Sister Vivian on Aug. 6, 1934. She professed first vows on Aug. 5, 1936, and made final profession on Aug. 9, 1942.
Sister Vivian received a bachelor's degree from Viterbo College majoring in piano with a minor in organ. She was awarded a master's degree in music education from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y. She did additional graduate study at MacPhail School of Music, Minneapolis, and University of Washington, Seattle. She taught music and was organist in elementary and secondary schools and parishes in Iowa, Montana and Wisconsin from 1935 to 1973. While teaching at Mount Senario College (1968-1973) in Ladysmith, she introduced the music major into the college curriculum. Sister Vivian wrote "Music Education in the Secondary School (1964)," a teacher manual and two workbooks for high school students, published by Gregorian Institute of Music in Toledo, Ohio. From 1973 to 1981, she ministered as religious education coordinator at St. Bridget Parish, River Falls. She served in pastoral ministry the next 16 years, 15 of those years at St. Joseph Parish, Menomonie. Sister Vivian retired to St. Rose Convent in 997 and to Villa St. Joseph in 1999.
Community members, family and friends remember her as a self-sacrificing, prayerful woman, dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. She credited Mary for many things, even protecting her from an angry, attacking bull when she was a small child alone in a farm pasture. Her many religious services, successful musicals, concerts and recitals were all dedicated to Mary. A brief autobiography written January, 1999, closed with Mary's words: "The Lord has done marvelous things. Deo Gratias!"
Sister Vivian was a caring, talented and persistent woman, close to family, a person with a zest for life. She served the people of God as long as she was physically able and then faced cancer and death with courage and cheerfulness. Before her cancer surgery last February, she found someone to replace her as organist at the hospital, rewrote her autobiography, disposed of her possessions and completed her funeral preparations.
She is survived by: her Franciscan Community; three sisters-in-law, Carmen Huppert of Ellsworth, Margie Huppert of River Falls and Evelyn Huppert of Prescott; devoted nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Peter and Mathilda; four brothers, Steve, Albert, Frank and Peter; four sisters, Bertha, Adeline, Cecilia and Elizabeth.
