Wallace J. Linse, 83
MAIDEN ROCK - Wallace Jess Linse, age 83, of Pepin died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
He was born March 10, 1916, in Buffalo County to Alvin and Etta (Goeldner) Linse and attended Church Valley School. He married Alice Anderson Sept. 25, 1940, in Buffalo, N.D. They farmed near Urne until 1960, when they moved to Durand. He did road construction work for many years. They later owned and operated an A & W Root Beer stand in Pepin.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Durand.
He is survived by: his wife; two sons, Robert (Pamela) of Stockholm and Don (Carol) of Maiden Rock; four grandchildren and one great-grandson; two sisters, Esther (Oscar) Sterry of Alma and Wilma (Paul) Sargent of Kansas City, Kan.; and one brother, Fred of Alma.
Preceding him in death were: one daughter, Clarice; and two brothers, Wilbur and Orville.
Funeral was Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Goodrich Funeral Home, Durand, with the Rev. Daniel Pfaffe officiated. A spring burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Buffalo County.
PeeWee Thompson, 80
SPRING VALLEY - M. W. "PeeWee" Thompson, age 80, of Pepin died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
He was born Aug. 18, 1919, in Spring Valley to Henry and Margaret (Hamilton) Thompson and attended school there. In 1933, the family left the farm and moved to Pepin, where they bought a grocery store which became a family endeavor. He graduated from Pepin High School in 1937 and continued to work at the store. Following the death of his father in 1945, he bought a half-interest in the business from his mother.
He married Donna Dale, Jan. 10, 1947, in Pepin. They continued to work at the store and later bought the remainder of the business. In 1982, they retired and sold the store to Dan and Susie Kircher. For a number of years, he also had a chicken produce business and later operated Pepin Marina, sold marine sports equipment and did repairs on the machines. During his retirement, he was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling and golfing.
Survivors include: his wife; one son, Dale (Marcia) of Wisconsin Dells; two daughters, Ann (Alan) Breitung of Pepin and Nancy (Michael) Walton of Bloomer.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Marshall.
Funeral was Saturday, Jan. 15, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Pepin, with the Rev. Karna Stark officiating. Spring burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Pepin.

Garland Whipp, 83
ELMWOOD - Garland Whipp, age 83, of Wisconsin Dells died on Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at the Reedsburg Area Medical Center in Reedsburg.
He was born on Feb. 18, 1916, in Rock Elm, the son of Lynn and Myrtle (Yourell) Whipp and the oldest of four children. He had been a member of the Methodist Church and graduated from Elmwood High School in 1934. He worked at the telephone company in the Maiden Rock area and met and married Jean Lane in 1940; they had a daughter, Judy. In 1943, he worked at Badger Ordinance and later Rural Electric and eventually started his own business, Whipp Electric, in Lake Delton and had worked for Mike Uphoff. For the next 45 years, he worked for Tommy Bartlett, helping devise and implement his famous dancing waters tourist attraction. He was the first president of the Village of Lake Delton, served on the county board, was a life member of the Delton Sportsman Club, was a devoted member of the Lake Delton Fire Department and was a member of the Sons of Norway.
After his wife died, he became a caretaker and very best friend for 13 years of Beatrice Nickel. He was confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells by Rev. Schueler on April 19, 1992.
He is survived by: his dear friend and companion, Beatrice Nickel; daughter, Judy Lehman of North Freedom; three granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Blaine (Virginia) Whipp of Janesville; many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Jean; a sister, Glade Boe; and a brother, Lyle Whipp.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells, with Rev. Dennis Schueler officiating. Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery in Wisconsin Dells.

John M. Felt, 63
John M. Felt, age 63, of Ellsworth died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000.
He was born Feb. 17, 1936, in Red Wing, the son of Eric and Vera (Straub) Felt. He was a graduate of Prescott High School. He worked for Jim Campbell's Standard Station for two years. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years, stationed in the South Pacific, California Scott Air Force Base in West Losey, Ill. He worked for Ford-Philco on government contracts in Iceland, where he met Helga Jonsdotter. They were married Dec. 21, 1962.
In 1963, he took a leave of absence from Philco to attend UW-River Falls. He graduated from there in 1967 with a major in Math and Physics and a minor in Chemistry. After graduating, they moved to Glendale, Md. Their son, John Erik, was born in Washington, D.C. They moved to Ellsworth in 1968 and he began working for Northwest Refinery in Newport, Minn. In 1971, he went to work for Economics Laboratory as a scientific computer analyst. Their daughter Anna Hulda was born in 1971 in Red Wing. In 1984, they purchased Swanson's Jewelry in Ellsworth, which became Helga's Jewelry. They retired in 1999, when they sold the store.
He was a member of Hancock Lodge #229, F and A.M.
He is survived by: his wife, Helga of Ellsworth; one son, Erik (Maureen) Felt of McFarland; one daughter, Anna Hulda of New York, N.Y.; one granddaughter and one grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services were to be at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the Hill Funeral Home, Ellsworth. Rev. Lauryl Stockness was to officiate. Friends were to call on Tuesday from 4 p.m. until the time of service. Memorials are preferred.

Alice B. Johnson, 85
Alice B. Johnson, age 85, of Ellsworth died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital in Red Wing.
She was born Feb. 18, 1914, in Exile, the daughter of Harry and Anna (Wild) Lee. She lived in the Exile area as a child and later moved to Elmwood.
She married and divorced Henry Hartfield. She married Marvin Johnson Dec. 1, 1945. He died in 1998. She enjoyed playing cards, drawing and playing the organ. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses attending the Kingdom Hall on CTH C in rural Ellsworth.
She is survived by: four children, Terry (Calvin) Landry of Ellsworth, Betty (James) Anderson of Hager City, Trudi (Dennis) Owen, Ellsworth, William (Jeanne) Hartfield, Centuria; 16 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren; one brother, George Lee of Ellsworth; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Marvin; an infant son, Bobby; one sister, Mildred; and one brother, Thurman.
Funeral was Friday, Jan. 14, at the Hill Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Ellsworth.
Severt Sabby, 92
SPRING VALLEY - Severt Sabby, age 92, of Woodville died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Park View Home in Woodville.
He was born April 8, 1907, in the Town of Rush River to Magnus and Inga (Ophiem) Sabby. He attended grade school at Centerville. He married Evelyn Moll Aug. 13, 1932, in St. Paul. She died June 29, 1970.
He farmed most of his life in the Baldwin area. After farming, he moved to Spring Valley and later Cornell before becoming a resident of Park View in Woodville. He also loved traveling, playing cards and dancing. He was a life long member of Rush River Lutheran Church, Rural River Falls.
Survivors include: one son, LaMoyne Sabby of Colfax; three grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were: his parents; his wife; two brothers (one in infancy); three sisters and one granddaughter, who died in infancy. Also special friend, Kate Timm, and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 15, at Rush River Lutheran Church, rural River Falls. Rev. John Sutherland officiated the service. Music was provided by organist Amy Holdorf and vocalist Rev. Richard Ulvilden. Burial was in Rush River Lutheran Cemetery.
Bearers were: Charles Langer, Harold Moll, Ronnie Harshman, Vern Harshman, Gerald Sabby and Willis Harshman.

Ruth M. McCleary, 64
BAY CITY - Ruth Marie McCleary, age 64, of Featherstone Township (Minn.), died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at her home.
She was born Aug. 13, 1935, in Lake City, Minn., to Edwin and Ella (Thomforde) Niebeling. Moving to Red Wing in 1943, she attended Red Wing schools. She married Neal McCleary Dec. 29, 1954, in Red Wing. They lived in Chicago and Cottage Grove, Minn., before returning to Red Wing in 1972. She worked at 3M's Chemolite Plant from 1961-73 and was a cook at Jefferson School from 1979-95. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post Auxiliary.
She is survived by: her husband; one daughter, Dawn (Larry) George of South St. Paul, Minn.; one son, Jay (Nancy) of Red Wing; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five brothers, Lawrence (Loraine) Niebeling of Red Wing, Robert (Laverne) Niebeling of Waianae, Hawaii, James (Linda) Niebeling of Red Wing, Davis (Karen) Niebeling of Bay City and Jerry (Millie) Niebeling of Welch, Minn.; three sisters, Margaret (Glenn) Books of Lady Lake, Fla., Evelyn (LaFayette) Poole of Rosemount, Minn., and Angeline (Orville) Doerr of Hastings, Minn.
Preceding her in death were: two brothers, Norbert and Dean Niebeling; six sisters, Mary Jane Niebeling, Donna Blair, Emily Dutcher, Arlene Morrison, June McCleary and Lucille Heitman.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 20, at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Greg Ofsdahl officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30-8 p.m. Wednesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Memorials are preferred to Red Wing Regional Hospice.
