Jerry Trojak
Jerry Joe Trojak, Phillips, died at his home on Monday, August 2, at the age of 77.
Born on the family farm in Lugerville on November 30, 1921, the son of Louis and Louise Trojak. He attended the Lugerville State Graded School and was a 1942 graduate of the Phillips High School. He served his country in the US Army 96th Infantry Division during WWII. He served for four years, including service in the South Pacific, Leyte and Okinawa. After the war he was employed at American Motors in Kenosha until 1965 when he returned to Phillips and worked as a carpenter until retirement. He was a life member of Junker Ball VFW Post No. 1865 of Kenosha. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, polka music and the company of his nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, August 5, at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Our Lady of the North Parish with Father Gerald Hagen celebrating the mass. Military honors will be conducted by the Frank and Michael Baran VFW Post No. 5778. Enurnment will be in the St. Patrick's Cemetery in Phillips.
He is survived by two sisters, Ann Robillard, Kenosha, and Betty (John) Jerrell, Tonopah, Nevada; by one brother, Edward (Therese), Phillips; and by nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his youngest brother Joseph who was killed at Anzio Beachhead.

William Hicks
Former Phillips resident William Clayton Hicks died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, in Montgomery, Texas, at the age of 79.
Born June 17, 1919, in Phillips to Howard and Francis (Nachtrab) Hicks, he received his degree from the UW and later studied at Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He served his country in World War II as a US Army officer, and married Betty Flood in Wisconsin on August 25, 1943. Mr. Hicks served as Price County Clerk and as a Wisconsin State Senator from 1949-53 before employment in Chicago at Sears Roebuck and Co. as vice president and corporate comptroller for 28 years, retiring to Texas in 1987.
Memorial services were held Monday, June 14, at April Sound Church with Reverend Down Johnson officiating.
Mr. Hicks is survived by his wife, Betty; a son, Don (Susan); a daughter, Valerie (Mrs. Ron) Claypool; two grandchildren; a great-grandson; and by nieces and nephews.
Henry Raab
Tomahawk resident Henry Raab died February 17, 1999, in McAllen, Texas, at the age of 82.
Born January 24, 1917, in Detroit, Michigan, to John and Kathleen Raab, he married Gladys Anderson on June 15, 1946, in Catawba. He retired from Standard Oil Company in 1971 and was a former president of the Tomahawk Lions Club, a member of the Tomahawk Northwoods Carvers, the Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers and the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, Inc.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, August 3, at the Krueger & Sons Funeral Home in Tomahawk with Reverend Rolf Amundsen officiating.
Mr. Raab is survived by his wife, Gladys; three sons: Gaylin (Linda), Apple Valley, Minnesota; Merlin (Janice), Green Bay; and Dennis (Vicky), Palatine, Illinois; a daughter, Marilyn, Aurora, Colorado; a brother, John, Utica, Michigan; and by nine grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to the Tomahawk Public Library.
Arvilla Hilbrand
Ogema resident Arvilla Ruth Hilbrand died Sunday, August 8, 1999, at her home at the age of 70.
Born June 6, 1929, in Stevens Point to Harry and Augusta (Cram) Coats, she attended McKinley Grade School, Emerson Middle School and graduated from PJ Jacobs High School in Stevens Point, where she worked at Weber's Tackle. Married to Melville Hilbrand on April 26, 1958, at the Assembly of God Church in Stevens Point, the couple moved to the Brantwood area, then to the Town of Spirit. A lifelong member of the Assembly of God Tabernacle in Tomahawk and active in the Women's Ministries of the Tomahawk Assembly of God, she loved spending time with her granddaughters and enjoyed cooking, baking pies and sewing in her free time.
The funeral was held Wednesday, August 11, at the Assembly of God Tabernacle in Tomahawk with Pastors Kenneth Nichols and James Kelly officiating. Interment was at Hillcrest Cemetery, Brantwood.
Mrs. Hilbrand is survived by her husband, Melville; a daughter, JaNelle (Mrs. Timothy) Nelson, Spirit; two granddaughters; and by a sister, Lenora (Mrs. Alvin) Warner, Tomahawk. She was predeceased by three brothers and a sister.
The Dallmann-Kniewel Funeral Home, Rib Lake, served the family.
Melvin Alm
Phillips resident Melvin C. Alm died at Pleasant View Nursing Home on Tuesday, August 10, 1999, at the age of 91.
Born in Ogema on April 27, 1908, to Bert and Mathilda (Carlson) Alm, he graduated as valedictorian of Phillips High School Class of 1926. He was a master sergeant in the US Army during World War II in the European Theater of Action, from June 1942 to October 1945, and was married to Marguerite Calkins. A member of the United Methodist Church and the Frank and Michael Baran VFW Post 5778 of Phillips, he was employed by the Price County Social Services Department for 34 years, retiring in 1972.
The funeral was held Monday, August 16, at the United Methodist Church with Reverend Avon Raczkowski officiating. Interment was at Lakeside Cemetery with military honors conducted by Post 5778.
Mr. Alm is survived by four children: Carol Boyer, Black River Falls; Leslie (Barbara), Boise, Idaho; Robert, Milwaukee; and Marilyn (Mrs. Mark) Farnsworth, Epping, New Hampshire; six grandchildren; and by a sister, Edna Cole, Hillsboro, Oregon. He was predeceased by four brothers, Bertrand, Philip, Clarence and Lorrimore, and by two sisters, Lillian and Margaret.

Carol Hanson
Town of Worcester resident Carol Elaine Hanson died at her home on Friday, August 13, 1999, at the age of 61.
Born March 23, 1938, in Wisconsin to Clifford and Leanora Langsdorf, she graduated from Fifield High School and married Earl Newman on October 23, 1954. He predeceased her on July 23, 1973. She then graduated from the UW-Superior with a bachelor of arts degree and married Gordie Hanson on May 20, 1988, in Superior. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Phillips and the Aid Association of Lutherans and was a strong supporter of public broadcasting.
The funeral was held Monday, August 16, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Gary Lodholz officiating. Interment was at Forest Home Cemetery, Fifield.
Mrs. Hanson is survived by her husband, Gordie; three sons: Robert Newman, Superior; Larry (Barbara) Newman, Wausau; and Brian (Roxyanne) Newman, Park Falls; a daughter, Cheryl Newman, Duluth, Minnesota; five grandchildren; and by a sister, Nancy. She was predeceased by her parents and by a brother.

E. DeLaney Hopkins
E. DeLaney Hopkins died at his home in Tomahawk on Saturday, August 7, 1999.
Born in Farmers City, Illinois, in 1922 to Bruce and Vera (Swigart) Hopkins, he married Norma Perry in 1946. A veteran of World War II, he received 11 Battle Stars in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and retired to the Tomahawk/Tripoli area from the US Department of Defense in1974.
Graveside memorial services were held at the Monticello Township Cemetery, Monticello, Illinois. Memorials may be made to a local hospice program.
Mr. Hopkins is survived by his wife, Norma; seven children: Jacalyn (Mrs. John) Price, Aurora, Illinois; Clark (Pam), Decatur, Illinois; Lucinds (Mrs. Steve) Festa, Winnetka, California; Sonna (Mrs. Rudy) Perez, Houston, Texas; Elissa (Mrs. Ken) Hine, Largo, Florida; Erin (Mrs. James) Kulibert, Van Dyne; and James (Helen), Chilton; 10 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; his mother, Vera; and by two brothers and four sisters. He was predeceased by his father, Bruce, and by a brother.
