Celia Webster
Celia A. Webster, 106, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at Tendercare/ Alpena, Michigan.
Born April 27, 1893, to William Hoskins and Martha Belle (Warbrittion) Hoskins. She married Eli Webster on March 16, 1912, in Glennie, Michigan, and enjoyed reweaving clothes for many year.
Mrs. Webster is survived by two daughters, Irene M. (Mrs. Herman) Bartz, Alpena, and Doris (Mrs. William) Piper, La-chine, Michigan; a son James (Fydelis), Alpena; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Eli, on June 7, 1969; three sons, Lovell, Howard and John; two grandchildren, Donald Brilinski and Randy J. Webster; and by four brothers, William and Monroe Hoskins and Lee and Arthur Haskins.
Alvin Gilge
Phillips resident Alvin R. Gilge died Friday, July 9, 1999, at the age of 73.
Born November 1, 1925, in Rib Lake to Julius and Martha Gilge, he married Mary Zemanovic on May 2, 1953. The couple owned businesses in the area for many years.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, at Our Lady of the North Catholic Church, St. Mary's Building, with Father Clement Sobr officiating. Inurnment will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Mr. Gilge is survived by three daughters: Joanne (Mrs. Ken) Neu, Hubertus; Kathy Barlament, Apple Valley, Minnesota; and Linda (Mrs. Mark) Mangin, Whitelaw; a son, Allen (Sandy), Neenah; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Elmer (Ester), Rib Lake, and Hugo (Eva) and Walter, both of Phillips; and by a sister, Bernice (Mrs. Conrad) Roder, Rib Lake. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary.
Elaine Krause
Former Catawba resident Elaine M. Krause, Arpin, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield at the age of 79.
Born February 16, 1920, in Milwaukee to Frank and Gertrude Moudry, she graduated from Milwaukee schools and worked as a beautician there until her marriage to Harold Krause on March 4, 1944, in Milwaukee. The couple farmed in West Bend, where she worked at Amity Leather, then moved to Spencer in 1967, farming and working at Weinbrenner Shoe Factory. They lived in Catawba from 1978-86 before retiring to Arpin.
The funeral was held Friday, July 9, at Hansen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Daryn Bahn of Christ Lutheran Church officiating. Burial was at Washington Memorial Park, West Bend.
Mrs. Krause is survived by her husband, Harold; a daughter, Lori (Mrs. Kevin) Fredrick, Marshfield; two sons, James (Kathy), Owen, and David (Kristine), Catawba; and by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Denis, in 1975, and a daughter, Judith Krause, on April 17, 1999.
James Vasa
Town of Elk resident James Joseph Vasa died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Phillips at the age of 59.
Born April 23, 1940, in Phillips to James and Anna (Obeyus) Vasa, he graduated from Philips High School, Class of 1958, and worked as a milk hauler, operated the city dray line in Phillips and then was employed as an over-the-road truck driver for several companies, currently with Northland Express of Phillips. A member of the National Guard, he married Paula Lotz on April 25, 1959, in Phillips, and en-joyed the outdoors in his free time, especially hunting.
The funeral service was held Friday, July 9, at the Heindl Funeral Home with Pastor William Cullen officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Phillips.
Mr. Vasa is survived by his wife, Paula; five sons: William (Aleis), Carpentersville, Illinois; James (Charlene), Ogema; Patrick (Cara) and Bradley, both of the Town of Elk; and Todd, Prairie du Chien; a daughter, Jessica (Mrs. Gary) Kleinhans, Prentice; and by 13 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and by a brother, William.
The Heindl Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Albert Zubcack
Longtime Town of Elk resident Albert Zubcack died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield at the age of 79.
Born September 16, 1919, in North Prairie to Joseph and Ida (Schmidt) Zubcack, he moved with his family to the Town of Elk as a child and graduated from Phillips High School, Class of 1936. He owned and operated a dairy farm in Elk for many years prior to retirement when he purchased and developed land in the area. An avid outdoorsman and protector of wildlife as well as of the environment, he was mechanically inclined and enjoyed doing repair work in his free time.
A private family service was held Saturday, July 10, at the Heindl Funeral Home in Phillips with Father Gerald Hagen officiating. Interment was at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Mr. Zubcack is survived by a brother, John, Phillips, and by three sisters, Helen Jensen and Kathryn Heizler, both of Phillips, and Doris DeYoung, Sheboygan.
The Heindl Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Raymond Bushman
Raymond J. Bushman, Kennan, died July 19, 1999, at his home at the age of 83.
Born on March 23, 1916, in Kennan to George and Petrinella (Nelessen) Bushman, he grew up in the Catawba-Kennan area and attended the North Fork School. He worked as a logger and served his country in the US Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre from November 1942 to October 1945, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. After his military service he was employed by A.O. Smith in Milwaukee. He married Faith Burcaw on October 15, 1949, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Catawba. He continued his employment in Milwaukee until 1951 when they purchased a dairy farm in Kennan. He later was employed by Prentice Hydraulics/ Omark Industries, retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church of Catawba, serving on its parish council for many years. He enjoyed hunting, dancing, gardening and bird watching.
The Funeral Mass was held Thursday, July 22, 1999, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and was concelebrated by Father Dismas Kalcic and Father John Regh. Burial was in the Kennan Cemetery. Military honors were conducted by the Catawba-Kennan VFW Post.
Survivors include his wife, Faith, Kennan; four daughters, Jill (Clifford) Baker, Hawkins, Shan (Terry) Wanish, Phillips, Bonnie (Lawrence) Meives, Phillips, and RaeMalee (Duane) Spindler, Rozellville; one son, George (Paula) Bushman, Kennan; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mildred VandenHeuvel, Appleton, Kathryn Strand, Menomonee Falls, and Magdeline Aparo, River Grove, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Julia Bushman, Kennan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three infant sisters; three brothers, Elmer, Clarence and Harvey Bushman; and four sisters, Hilda Miller, Rosella Gilbert, Florence Manion and Bernice Linzmeyer.
Norman Gunderman
Chetek resident Norman F. Gunderman died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at his home at the age of 70.
Born August 3, 1928, in Bloomer to John and Mary (Hetzel) Gunderman, he attended Bloomer School and moved to Dallas, Wisconsin, in 1941, attending Barron High School. Married to Ilene Huset on September 14, 1954, in Chetek, he farmed near Dallas for several years until moving to Ogema in 1962 where he owned and operated a milk route for Dolly Madison for 22 years. The couple moved to Cameron in 1984 where they worked at Ag-Ri-Cove for 14 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening in his free time.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, July 21, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Chetek with Father Gerard Willger officiating.
Mr. Gunderman is survived by his wife, Ilene; two daughters, Linda Gunderman, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Lois (Mrs. Gary) Berg, Ogema; three sons: Douglas (Pam), Mazomanie; David (Cathy), Ogema; and John, Conrath; and by seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Herb and Jerome.
