Gearldine Kalander
Former Ogema and Rib Lake resident Gearldine Kalander, Anchorage, Alaska, died June 10, 1999, at Providence Nursing Care Center in Anchorage at the age of 85.
Born to Henry and Maria (Watien) Manninen in Rib Lake on April 17, 1914, she married Carl Kalander on January 2, 1934. The couple lived in Ogema and she worked as an LPN for 23 years, enjoying knitting and crocheting for her grandchildren.
Mrs. Kalander is survived by four daughters: Maria (Mrs. Ron) Phlaum, Medford, Oregon; Jacque (Mrs. Charles) Falkner, Durand; Harriet (Mrs. Richard) Reynolds, Huntsville, Texas; and Carol Baker, Anchorage; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; four sisters: Hannah Wayrymen and Mary Bergonson, Detroit, Michigan; Marian Annala, Westboro; and Isabella Annala, Rib Lake; a sister-in-law, Margaret Kalander; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl, in 1955; three brothers, Henry, David and Joe; a grandson, Mark; and two great-grandchildren, Tim and Marlinda.
Michael Litvinoff
On July 13, 1999, Phillips resident Michael Litvinoff passed away. Born to Stephen and Sophia Litvinoff on December 12, 1922, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, he moved to Kennan with his family in 1932. He attended grade school in Kennan and graduated from high school in Phillips in 1941.
Completing his first year of college at the University of Wisconsin, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 27, 1942. Serving as a ball-turret gunner, he flew 51 missions over Africa, Europe and Italy. He completed his military service as a Staff Sargent and was honorably discharged on September 23, 1945.
On May 20, 1950, he married Arlene Marie Nehls, daughter of Ralph E. and Anna Nehls at the Congregational Church in Prentice.
Completing his college education and graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, he taught first at the Lake Ten School in 1960 and then transferred to teach at both Kennan and Catawba Middle Schools, retiring in the spring of 1985. The organization, coaching and success of the boys basketball program was of great pride to him, his family and the community.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene; daughters, Debra Ann (Mrs. Robert F. Cervenka), Phillips; and Michele Marie, Chili, Wisconsin; his brother, Max (Rosemary), Kennan; brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Bette Nehls, Prentice; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; ten nieces and nephews; and nineteen great nieces and nephews. His parents and his sister, Mary (Mrs. John Varsek) preceded him in death.
Pastor Richard Kittelstad conducted a private memorial service on July 15, 1999. The Frank and Michael Baran VFW Post #5778 presented military honors and internment is at Lakeside Cemetery.
Viola Mabie
Viola Mabie died July 13, 1999, at the age of 86.
Funeral services were held Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Catawba, with interment at Catawba Cemetery.
Mrs. Mabie is survived by five daughters: Evelyn (Mrs. John) Wojtowicz, Florence Miller, Hilda (Mrs. Donald) Peterson, Lillian (Mrs. Joseph) Rodano and Joyce (Mrs. Ronnie) Reed; 25 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and by a brother and three sisters. She was predeceased by her husband, Archie; a grandson and a great-grandson.
Betty Schreck, Town of Georgetown resident Betty Jane Schreck died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at Flambeau Hospital in Park Falls at the age of 73.
Born April 2, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, to George and Theodora (Perkins) Rebuke, she graduated from Aminson High School in Chicago, Class of 1944, and worked at the Victor Adding Machine Company there until her marriage to LaBarre Schreck December 25, 1951, in Mundelein, Illinois. The couple moved to Stuart, Florida, until 1980, then to Georgetown. She enjoyed crafting projects and was an avid gardener in her free time.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date, with inurnment at the Harmony Cemetery.
Mrs. Schreck is survived by her husband, LaBarre; three sons: Tim (Kathy), Port St. Lucy, Florida; Tom (Karen), Nashville, Tennessee; and Dean (Marena), Georgetown; and by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Dale.

Elizabeth Wheeler
Town of Elk resident Elizabeth "Betty" Wheeler died Friday, July 16, 1999, at Flambeau Hospital in Park Falls at the age of 69.
Born April 14, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, to Joseph and Gertrude (Hauser) Wood, she graduated from high school in Chicago in 1949 and married Harold "Rudy" Wheeler on January 8, 1951, moving with him in the military to San Antonio, Texas, then Anchorage, Alaska, where she worked as a hair stylist, then to San Angela, Texas, before moving to Price County in 1974. She enjoyed oil painting, ceramics and quilting in her free time and started Betty's Crafts in her home, which she operated for many years before ill health forced retirement. Active in the community, she also taught quilting at NTC-North and helped create quilts for the Czechoslovakian Festival.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, July 21, at the First Baptist Church with Reverend Kevin Miller officiating. Interment was at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Mrs. Wheeler is survived by three daughters: Dale (Mrs. Carl) Waddle, Vermontville, Michigan; Sharon (Mrs. Gary) Williams, Phillips; and Susan (Mrs. Ted) Powell, Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren; and by two brothers, twin David and Joseph (LaVerne), both of Chicago, Illinois. She was predeceased by her husband, Rudy, on February 18, 1998.

Robert Wicklund Sr.
Prentice resident Robert D. Wicklund Sr. died Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander at the age of 74.
Born July 20, 1924, in Stanchfield, Minnesota, to Bertel and Minnie (Skoog) Wicklund, he spent his early life and schooling there and served as a radio operator in the US Navy during World War II. Married to Eleanor Christensen on December 20, 1946, in Cambridge, Minnesota, the couple moved to the Prentice area in 1948 where he worked for over 39 years for the Soo Line Railroad until retirement in 1986. A member of the First Lutheran Church of Prentice and the Southern Price County VFW Post 8491, he enjoyed restoring furniture, fishing and visiting friends at local cafes in his free time.
The funeral was held Saturday, July 17, at the First Lutheran Church with Reverend Timothy Schueler officiating. Interment was at Prentice Cemetery with military honors conducted by Post 8491.
Mr. Wicklund is survived by his wife, Eleanor; three daughters: Karen Granberg and Cindy (Mrs. Peter) Heikkinen, both of Prentice, and Jean (Mrs. Jim) Hill, Tripoli; a son, Robert Jr. (Sandy), Maple Park, Illinois; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and by three brothers, Vernette (Delores) and Virgil (Gertrude), both of Cambridge, Minnesota, and Lloyd (Margaret), Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was predeceased by a sister, Doris, and by five brothers, Bert, Clifford, Doward, Roger and Howard.

Clete Biermann
Former Ogema resident Clete J. Biermann, Green Valley, Arizona, died April 14, 1999, at the age of 76.
Born June 26, 1922, in Ogema to George and Abigail Biermann, he married Irma Ballagh on May 23, 1952.
A memorial service was held at Desert Hills Lutheran Church in Green Valley on Saturday, April 17.
Mr. Biermann is survived by his wife, Irma; a son, Paul (Shoosh); and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Hilma Christoffersen
Former Ogema resident Hilma Heidi Christoffersen, Huntsville, Alabama, died on Friday, April 16, 1999, in Huntsville at the age of 82.
Born in Ogema December 15, 1916, to Andrew and Hilma (Maki) Maatta, she attended grade school in the Town of Hill and graduated from Westboro High School. Married to Osbjorn Christoffersen, the couple farmed in the Ogema area, moving to Huntsville in 1979. She was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Huntsville and a former member of the First Lutheran Church of Ogema, the Ogema Homemakers and St. Mark's Women's Circle, and enjoyed baking and gardening in her free time.
The funeral was held Tuesday, April 20, at Ogema Lutheran Church with Reverend Jerome Godson officiating, with burial at Garden of Memories Cemetery in the Town of Hill.
Mrs. Christoffersen is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Pearson, Huntsville; two brothers, John (Edna), Ogema, and Dr. Andrew (Donnafaye), Woodruff; a sister, Ann Hakala, Chicago, Illinois; and by two grandsons and a great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her husband, Osbjorn, in 1987; a brother, Elmer; and by a sister, Saima Creed.
The Dallmann-Kniewel Funeral Home, Rib Lake, served the family.
