Jeannette Messerschmidt Drunasky
Former Phillips resident Jeannette Messerschmidt Drunasky died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, in Bakersfield, California, at the age of 75.
Born July 23, 1923, in Monee, Illinois, to Isabella and Joseph Bruno, she spent her early life and schooling in the Chicago area and came to the Phillips area as a young lady, where she married Roy Messerschmidt. He predeceased her in 1976 and she married Lester Drunasky on June 29, 1978, in LaMont, California. He predeceased her in 1985.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, April 21, at the First Presbyterian Church in Phillips with Pastor William Cullen officiating. Interment was at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Mrs. Messerschmidt Drunasky is survived by four sons: David (Crystal) Messerschmidt, Park Falls, and John, William (Stephanie) and Cody Messerschmidt, all of Bakersfield; four daughters: Delores (Mrs. Chester) Rhinehart, Chili; Linda Fischer, Eau Claire; Mary (Mrs. Joe) Lamothe, La Crosse; and Sonia Garman, Ventura, California; and by 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, David and Victor, and by a sister, Sonia Ballas.

Elizabeth Dunn
Lifelong Phillips resident Elaine Elizabeth Dunn died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at Flambeau Hospital in Park Falls at the age of 82.
Born June 10, 1916, in the Town of Elk to Sanford and Ona (Beason) Hill, she attended area schools and married Aubry Dunn on October 22, 1938, in Phillips. The couple owned and operated a dairy farm and logged in the Town of Elk and were caretakers for the Reptal family in Phillips for many years prior to their retirement. She was a member of the Phillips Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, the Harmony Homemakers and a former 4-H leader.
The funeral service was held Saturday, March 27, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Bernard Stewart officiating, with interment at Lakeside Cemetery.
Mrs. Dunn is survived by a brother, Elwin "Bud" (Lois), Phillips; three sisters, Marie Penneau and Leona Palmer, both of Phillips, and Cloe Birdeau, Fairfield, Montana; and by two great-nephews, Donald "Ray" (Lois) and Edward (Melody) Riley, both of Phillips, and a great-niece, Charlotte Ziemke, Catawba, whom the couple raised. She was predeceased by her husband, Aubry, on June 5, 1989, and by six brothers and four sisters.

Clarence Lundeen
Clarence Fredolph Lundeen, Westboro, died Thursday, January 7, 1999, at the Rib Lake Health Care Center at the age of 91.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 24, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Westboro with Reverend Jerome Godson officiating. Inurnment will be at Westboro Northside Cemetery.

Gordon Norberg
Gordon A. Norberg, Rib Lake, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield at the age of 84.
Born February 7, 1915, in Waterbury, Connecticut, to Reverend Anton and Agda (Widen) Norberg, he attended elementary schools in Minneapolis and Chicago, graduated high school from North Park Academy in Chicago, North Park College in Chicago and from Northwestern University Technological Institute with a degree in engineering. In 1936 he invented the torque wrench and devised and applied the cost of living adjustment, COLA, universally applied to wage contracts, Social Security payments, etc. He married Charlotte Spegel on September 17, 1938, in Chicago, worked as a field representative and later director of field operations for A.C. Nielsen Co. Radio Index Division. He was director of research and marketing for Wade Advertising of Chicago from 1946-61, director of marketing research for D'Arcy Advertising, also of Chicago, from 1961-67 and was included in Who's Who for many years. The couple owned and operated the Pear Tree in Wilmette, Illinois, from 1967-72 and, in 1970 with another couple, established Brothers Two, Inc., moving to the Rib Lake area in 1974 and retiring in 1979. They served as sales consultants for their successor corporation, Tannery Lane Co., participating at trade shows throughout the US and retiring in 1993.
Mr. Norberg was a member of Woodland Community Church of Westboro, serving in various capacities; the Merrill Historical Society, past president and member of the Chicago Rock & Mineral Society, a member and past president of the board of the North Park College Alumni Association, past treasurer of the Illinois Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America, an honorary member in the journalism society, Pi Alpha Mu, by Northwestern University School of Journalism and a former member of the Winnetka Bible Church.
The memorial service has been tentatively set for Saturday, May 1, at 11 a.m. at Woodland Community Church in Westboro with Rev. A. Grant Brown officiating. Inurnment will be at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Westboro.
Mr. Norberg is survived by his wife, Charlotte; a son, Richard (Holly), Land of Lakes; a daughter, Charlotte (Mrs. Dana) Marcelius, Minnetonka, Minnesota; and by four grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was predeceased by a sister, Doris.
Memorials may be made to Woodland Community Church of North Park College Alumni Fund.

John Opresik
Former Phillips resident John James Opresik, Weippe, Idaho, died March 16, 1999, at Clearwater Valley Hospital at the age of 87.
Born September 2, 1911, in Windber, Pennsylvania, to John and Anna Opresik, the family moved to the Phillips area where he received his education. He traveled west on freight trains when the Depression started with thousands of others, including friends from the Phillips area, moving to Idaho in 1934 where he worked in the Austin Ridge Lookout, in the logging industry and for the United States Forest Service until retirement in 1976, still guiding in the fall. He married Rose Bringman on December 24, 1941, at Orofino, Idaho, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking and studying Indian history in his free time. He donated land for the Lewis and Clark Historical site on the Weippe Prairie.
Mr. Opresik is survived by his wife, Rose; three sons: Jim, Myrtle Creek, Oregon; Raymond, Orofino; and Lester, Weippe; a sister, Helen Howard, Shorewood; locally by two nieces, Eleanore Delach and Edith Hrad, and a nephew, Sam Opresik; and by many friends and classmates. He was predeceased by two infant sons and by two brothers, Sam and Joe.
Otto Paul
Phillips resident Otto Albert Paul died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Flambeau Hospital in Park Falls at the age of 91.
Born December 1, 1907, in Valcers to Robert and Marie (Brehmer) Paul, he attended school in the Town of Hoard, then helped his parents on the family farm. He worked in construction and logging and, for 50 years, he and his brother, Ray, owned and operated Paul Brothers in Owen, retiring in 1978. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping in his younger days.
The funeral was held Wednesday, April 21, at the Maurina Funeral Home in Owen with Reverend Tom Myhre officiating. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in Wi-thee. Pallbearers were Gary Hamm, James Larson, Richard Sorenson, Ron Hoffman, Roger Hargot and Keith Paul.
Mr. Paul is survived by three brothers, Arthur, Owen; Ray, Phillips; and Wilmer (Alice), Curtiss; and by a sister, Lila Edwards, Arpin. He was predeceased by two brothers, Norman and Elmer, and by a sister Lorraine Kurtzheim.
The Maurina Funeral Home, Owen, assisted the family.
Emil Chrusciel
Phillips resident Emil Chrusciel died at his home on Thursday, April 22, 1999, at the age of 89.
Born in Poland August 8, 1909, to Joseph and Rose Chrusciel, he came to the US to Colorado with his family in 1911 and to the Town of Emery in 1918. He married Rose Koci on December 7, 1931, and operated a dairy farm in the Town of Worcester, worked as a milk hauler, at Tony's Implement in Phillips and served as maintenance manager for Park and Lake village apartments. He was a member of the ZCBJ Lodge and AARP.
Funeral services were held at the Heindl Funeral Home on Saturday, April 24, with Pastor Brad Soukup of the Cornerstone Community Church officiating.
Mr. Chrusciel is survived by his wife, Rose; two daughters, Dorothy (Mrs. James) Ziller, New Berlin, and Ginger Foster, Des Moines, Iowa; a son, Bud (Dianne), Minneapolis, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and by nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Joe, Gust and Louie, and by two sisters, Ann Rezny and Agnes Molovich.
