Leo Manthey
Leo Albert Manthey, Town of Elk, died at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Phillips on Thursday, April 29, 1999, at the age of 65.
Born in Prentice on June 8, 1933, to Albert and Clara Manthey, he attended school in Prentice and graduated from St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota. A US Army veteran from 1954-56, he married Joan Stack at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Stratford on November 22, 1962, and was employed by the Price County Social Services Department as a caseworker, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Our Lady of the North Catholic Parish and the Knights of Columbus Council 2963.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 4, at St. Patrick's Church with Father Clement Sobr celebrating the funeral mass. Interment was at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Mr. Manthey is survived by his wife, Joan; three children: Dr. Joseph (Dr. Kim Ward), Richmond, Virginia; Jane (Mrs. Bob) Kamrath, Cameron; and Kevin, Mesa, Arizona; two grandchildren; and by six brothers and sisters: Sister Ann Manthey OSF, Superior; Mary (Mrs. Clarence) Powers, Prentice; Cecelia (Mrs. Robert) Vytlacil, Hudson; Gabriel (Veronica), West Palm Beach, Florida; Xavier (Dianne), Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Aurelia (Mrs. Jeff) Poythress, St. Michael, Minnesota. He was predeceased by his parents and by an infant sister, Julianna.
The Heindl Funeral Home, Phillips, was in charge of the arrangements.
Alfred Pohle
Longtime Park Falls resident Alfred J. Pohle died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Park Manor Nursing Home at the age of 87.
Born March 14, 1912, in Medford to Ollie and Katrina (Domine) Pohle, he spent his early life and schooling there and married Lucille White in Park Falls on February 17, 1934. He was employed in the shipyard in Superior, Hines Lumber in Park Falls, then at the Flambeau Mill in Park Falls, retiring in 1975.
The funeral was held Monday, May 3, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Park Falls with Fr. Al Ebach officiating. Burial followed at Nola Cemetery, Park Falls.
Mr. Pohle is survived by a son, Donald, Phillips; a daughter, Judy (Mrs. Fred) Lenzen, Park Falls; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Helen Hoffman, Medford; Matilda (Mrs. Howard) Jawson, Milwaukee; and Lillian Menos, Appleton; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Lucille, in 1976; a son, Thomas; a daughter-in-law, Jean; a brother, Charles; and by a sister, Ann.

Charles Rankin
Former Phillips resident Charles W. Rankin Sr., Delavan, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at his home at the age of 86.
Born December 24, 1912, in Topeka, Kansas, to William and Nellie (Shellhammer) Rankin, he graduated from Loyal High School, where he lived before moving to Waukesha, then to Phillips, then to Delavan. He married Inez Klein on November 30, 1938, in Loyal, and worked as a welder for Harnishfeger in Milwaukee, retiring in 1976. A member of the Masonic Lodge in Waukesha, he owned the Waukesha Archery Center and was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed archery and camping.
No services were held. Memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Rankin is survived by a son, Charles "Bill" (Kathy) Jr., Waukesha; six grandchildren; a cousin, Marie Farrell, Waukesha; and by two nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by his wife, Inez, on March 28, 1962, and by a daughter, Sharon Evans.
John Szwec
Phillips resident John Victor Szwec, 35, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, in Gays Mills as the result of an accident.
Born November 29, 1963, in Jefferson County to Witalig and Shirley (Grossman) Szwec, he spent his early life there, graduating from Jefferson High School. He married Shannon Knaack on June 12, 1993, in Madison, and received a degree in electronics from MATC in Madison, and a second degree in supervisory management. Employed at Marquip in Madison, then Marquip in Phillips, he was a member of Saint John Lutheran Church here and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, outdoor activities, and was active in the men's golf leagues in Phillips and Prentice and the area volleyball league.
The funeral was held Monday, May 3, at Saint John with Reverend Thomas Reiff officiating. Interment was at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Mr. Szwec is survived by his wife, Shannon; two sons, John Thomas, "J.T.," and Lucas William; his parents, Witalig and Shirley Szwec, Jefferson; three sisters, Terri (special friend Keven) Szwec, Cambridge; Bonnie (Mrs. Mike) Julson, Briggsville; and Laurie (Mrs. Steve) Lawson, Johnson Creek; three brothers, Robert, Jefferson, and twin brothers Jim and Joe, Johnson Creek; his in-laws, William and Patricia Knaack, Phillips; two brothers-in-law, Charles (Juli Anna) Knaack, Prentice, and William Knaack Jr., Platteville; and by a sister-in-law, Jodi Knaack, Green Bay. He was predeceased by a brother, Tom.

Vivian Dobschuetz-Siok
Former Phillips resident Vivian Dobschuetz-Siok, Prentice, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Taylor County in Medford at the age of 77.
Born May 30, 1921, in Omaha, Nebras-ka, to Bennett and Helen (Martin) Combs, her early life and schooling were in Milwaukee where she graduated from Horace Mann. She married Thomas Dobschuetz in Phillips on September 1, 1940, and managed Crown Shoes, owned and operated a small restaurant and worked at Triangle Drugs, all in Milwaukee, until her retirement. She was a member of the Phillips AARP.
A graveside service was held Saturday, May 8, at Lakeside Cemetery.
Mrs. Dobschuetz-Siok is survived by a son, Jerry (Gale), Muskego; two daughters, Bonnie (Mrs. Jim) Farina, Milwaukee, and Sandra Kerwin, Phillips; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; her father, Bennett, Chattanooga, Tennessee; two brothers, Buddy (Ernestine), St. Louis, Missouri, and Donald (JoAnne), Nashville, Tennessee; two sisters, Dorothy Purdee, Texas, and Shirley (Mrs. Bernie) Todd, Orem, Utah; and by many friends. She was predeceased by her mother, Helen; her first husband, Thomas; her second husband, Walter; a brother, Richard; a sister, Geraldine Combs; a son-in-law, Gerald Kerwin; a brother-in-law, George Purdee; and by her best friend, Lucy McCullough.
Ernfred Kroon
Former Ogema resident Ernfred Laverne Kroon, Rice Lake, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at the Rice Lake Convalescent Center at the age of 84.
Born January 14, 1915, to John and Anna (Anderson) Kroon in Paxton, Illinois, he married Elizabeth Samson in Chicago, Illinois, on September 27, 1941. The couple farmed in Ogema until 1947 when they moved to Shawano where he worked as a technician for Badger Breeders, now known as 21st Century Genetics. After the death of his wife, he later married Crystal Crooks on February 1, 1964, in Shawano, retiring in 1975 and moving to Rice Lake in 1979. A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rice Lake, he enjoyed hunting and fishing in his free time.
A memorial mass was held Wednesday, May 5, at St. Joseph with Father Kevin Gordon officiating. Cremains were inurned at Sacred Hearth Catholic Cemetery, Shawano.
Mr. Kroon is survived by a daughter, Kathleen (Mrs. Warren) Kraus, Shreveport, Louisiana; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Lucille (Mrs. Gary) Below, Rice Lake; four step- grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; and by a sister, Esther DeYoung, Shreveport. He was predeceased by his second wife, Crystal, in June 1997; an infant daughter, Phyllis; and by brothers and sisters.
Rudolph Luedke
Former Ogema resident Rudolph "Pete" Luedke died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Terrace at St. Francis Nursing Home in Milwaukee at the age of 74.
Born September 28, 1924, in Ogema to Frederick and Nancy (Hudson) Luedke, he farmed in the Ogema and Prentice areas and logged in the Park Falls area before retiring to Oak Creek in 1991 to be near his family.
The funeral was held Friday, May 7, at Molthen Bell and Sons Funeral Home in South Milwaukee. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery in Ogema May 8.
Mr. Luedke is survived by seven children: Patricia, Judy Migacz, Otto Sr. (Wendy) and William, all of Milwaukee; Frederick (Darlene), Oak Creek; Robert (fiancé Debra Brown), Port Washington; and Nancy (Mrs. John) Schwartz, Lakeland, Florida; 11 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a brother, August, Chandler, Arizona; and by a sister, Eleanor Luedke, Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was predeceased by two sons, Edward and Wayne.
