George Huebner
Town of Elk resident George J. Huebner died at Flambeau Hospital in Park Falls on Thursday, March 11, 1999, at the age of 73.
Born in Milwaukee on January 11, 1926, to Herman and Katherine Huebner, he married Florence Jacobs on May 15, 1950, in Lansing, Michigan. A mason in the construction industry and a member of the BAC Union of Wisconsin, he enjoyed hunting and fishing in his free time.
Cremation has taken place.
Mr. Huebner is survived by his wife, Florence, and by special friends Keith and Ellen Gross and family. He was predeceased by a brother, Herman.

Steve Janak
Lifelong Phillips resident Steve T. Janak died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff at the age of 81.
Born November 11, 1917, in Phillips to Anton and Mary Janak, he served in the US Army during World War II in the European Theater of Action. A member of the D-Day Invasion, he was wounded in action on June 23, 1944, and received the Purple Heart. Following military service he married Kathryn Palko on April 25, 1945, in Indiana, and worked as a logger and dairy farmer for many years as well as assessor for the Town of Worcester for 14 years. A member of Our Lady of the North Catholic Parish, the Frank and Michael Baran VFW Post 5778, the DAV and the Knights of Columbus Council 2963, all of Phillips, he enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, in his free time.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, March 31, at St. Mary's Church with Father Clement Sobr officiating, with interment at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Mr. Janak is survived by his wife, Kathryn; four sons: Richard (Sylvia), Waukesha; Steve (Lora), Woodruff; and Gary (Patti) and William, both of Phillips; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and by a sister, Mary (Mrs. Frank) Sagan, a step-sister, Helen Juracka, and a stepbrother, Frank (Alice) Skvarek, all of Chicago, Illinois.

Hope McCormick
Kennan resident Hope Melvina McCormick died at Rusk County Memorial Hospital in Ladysmith on Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at the age of 68.
Born in Ogema on December 2, 1930, to Albert and Melvina Gillette, she married John McCormick at the Gillette homestead on November 13, 1948. A member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church of Kennan, the couple operated McCormick Trucking in Kennan and she enjoyed flower gardening, her family, traveling, camping and fishing with John.
The funeral was held Saturday, March 27, at St. Paul with Father Dismas Kalcic celebrating the funeral mass. A McCormick Trucking semi-tractor led the funeral procession from the church to the trucking business and around the home and truck yard where all the semis had been arranged facing the driveway with their headlights on, then proceeded to Kennan Cemetery for interment.
Mrs. McCormick is survived by four sons: Michael (Beverly), Robert and Timothy, all of Kennan, and Patrick (Mary) Catawba; a daughter, LuAnn (Mrs. Tom) Novakovic, Ingram; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a brother, Oren (Louise), Kennan; and by four sisters: Viola Mabie, Minnesota; Capitola Dibbles, Rhinelander; Doris (Mrs. Richard) Gehring, Hawkins; and Irene (Mrs. Jim) May, Florida. She was predeceased by five sisters, Inez Peterson, Rose Tews, Marian Householder, Elsie Helmick and Pricilla Stoner, and by a grandson, Joseph.

John McCormick
Kennan resident John Robert McCormick died at Rusk County Memorial Hospital in Ladysmith on Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at the age of 71.
Born in Milwaukee on July 16,1927, to Leighton and Lillian McCormick, he married Hope Gillette at the Gillette homestead on November 13, 1948. A member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church of Kennan and the Father Resmey Knights of Columbus Council 2481 of Ladysmith, the couple operated McCormick Trucking in Kennan and he enjoyed his family, traveling, camping and fishing with Hope.

Patricia Stevens
Town of Worcester resident Patricia Jean Stevens died at the Flambeau Hospital in Park Falls on Monday, March 29, 1999, at the age of 47.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 4, 1951, to Mark and Jean Clavert, she married Gary Stevens in Woodstock, Illinois, on December 1, 1972. Employed by Phillips Plastics Corporation for the past seven years, she enjoyed camping, her dog, Zack, and working with her horse.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 1, at 11 a.m. at the Heindl Funeral Home in Phillips with Rev. Avon Raczkowski of the United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Harvard, Illinois. Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Mrs. Stevens is survived by her husband, Gary; her mother, Jean; a sister, Debbie Menge, Pell Lake; and by two nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Mark.

Leonard Nyberg Sr.
Former Spirit resident Leonard R. Nyberg Sr., Virginia, Minnesota, died Friday, March 26, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota, at the age of 81.
Born March 27, 1917, in Spirit to John and Annie (Marheine) Nyberg, he grew up in the area and graduated from Spirit Community School. He served in the US Army in World War II and married Margaret Ann Collins in Oberlin, Louisiana, on July 2, 1944. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, Yoki-Bergman American Legion Post 220 of Mountain Iron and VFW Post 1539 of Babbitt, he was employed by the Duluth Winnipeg and Pacific, then the Duluth Mesabe and Iron Range railroads, retiring in 1981 after 44 years of service.
Mr. Nyberg is survived by his wife, Margaret; a son, Leonard Jr., Babbitt; three daughters, Winifred (Mrs. Richard) Lierman, Rockford, Illinois; Deborah (Mrs. Darryl) Haugen, Eagan, Minnesota; and Deedra (Mrs. Tim) Whalen, Fargo, North Dakota; 10 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three sisters, Alice Jones, Chicago, Illinois; Lillian Olsen, Escanaba, Michigan; and Evelyn Davis, Phillips; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.
Helen Polacek
Lifelong Town of Worcester resident Helen R. Polacek died at Pleasant View Nursing Home on Thursday, April 8, 1999, at the age of 81.
Born in Phillips on June 27, 1917, to Harry and Anna Fleitner, she was raised by her father since age 9 after her mother's death. Salutatorian of Phillips High School Class of 1935, she married Peter Polacek at St. Mary's Church in Phillips on November 23, 1937, and the couple operated a dairy farm in the Town of Worcester until their retirement. She was a member of Our Lady of the North Catholic Parish and of the Catholic Daughters and served on the election board for the Town of Worcester for many years. She enjoyed her family and friends, cooking for weddings,square dancing, playing cards, gardening and quilting in her free time.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 12, at St. Mary's Church with Father Clement Sobr celebrating the funeral mass. Interment was at. St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Mrs. Polacek is survived by six children, James (Jean), Marilyn, Shirley (Mrs. Kevin) Hemp and William (Sue), all of Phillips; Edward (Betty), Appleton, and Diane (Mrs. Wayne) Morey, Brantwood; 22 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and by a sister Verona Sir, Phillips. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter, on December 5, 1986; a brother, Charles; and by a sister, Louise Sir.
