Melvin Strutz
Minocqua resident Melvin C. Strutz died Sunday, April 11, 1999, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff at the age of 68.
A memorial service was held Wednesday at the Schmidt-Bartelt Funeral Home in Menomonee Falls.
Mr. Strutz is survived by three daughters: Faye Sadlon, San Clemente, California; Gale Strutz, Waukesha; and Patricia (Mrs. Joel) Stoller, Menomonee Falls; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and by his mother, Lilas Strutz, Appleton. He was predeceased by his father and by a brother, Gerald.
The Bolger Funeral Home, Minocqua, served the family locally.
Luann Wergeland
Former Phillips resident Luann Wergeland died on Thursday, April 1, 1999, after a lengthy illness at age 63.
Born April 19, 1935, in Phillips, to Franklin and Gladys Lillie, she attended area schools and was a teacher at E.O. Green School in Oxnard.
Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery, Phillips.
Mrs. Wergeland is survived by a son, Chad, Ventura, California, and a daughter, Kara Hebert, Camarillo, California. She was predeceased by her parents and by a son, Leith.
Leffel
Orval Irvin Leffel, 84, formerly of Springstead, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998.
Pastor Joel T. Schlachtenhaufen of St. Mark's Evangelical Church in Neenah, where Orval was a long-time member, was celebrant at the funeral. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah.
He was born Sept. 17, 1914, in March, WI; his parents were Frederick and Irma (Schroeder) Leffel.
He married Bernice Ilene Bidwell April 24, 1936.
He worked in various locations, including Neenah and Niagara and in Memphis, TN, for Kimberly-Clark Corp. from 1929 to 1975.
He retired to Springstead, where he lived for seven years before returning to Neenah. In later years, he lived near his youngest daughter in Hayward.
He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Kay (William) Ellis and Carol (Larry) Waitrovich, both of Neenah, Mary (John) Carrel of Dunnellon, FL, and Judy (Rich) Titus of Hayward; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; eight nephews, four nieces and by special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Russell and Arthur Leffel; and four brothers, Otto, Arthur, Delbert and Walter Leffel.
Meyer
Dorothy A. Meyer, 93, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at Fort Atkinson Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Services were held Thursday, Dec. 24, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Whitewater.
Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Whitewater.
She was born March 13, 1905, in the town of Koshkonong. Her parents were Christ and Ottilie (Wittlief) Schmidt.
She married Walter Meyer Feb. 18, 1927, in Whitewater.
She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Church and a member of the Ladies Aid.
She and her husband farmed in the Clover Valley area in the rural Whitewater Lake area. In 1945, they moved to a farm near Millard. They retired from farming in 1957 and moved to Whitewater, where she worked in a local care facility and he worked at Moskness Manufacturing Co. They retired in 1967.
She is survived by two daughters, Darlene (Robert) Trickey of Lake Geneva and Adell (Glen) Starczynski of Butternut; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Hattie Schmidt and Frieda Piepenberg, both of Jefferson.
She was preceded in death by her husband and by six brothers and five sisters.
Schoppe
William Schoppe, 54, of Butternut, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at his home.
Services were held Jan. 3 at Countryside Funeral Home, Bartlett, IL.
A memorial service will be held in Park Falls at a later date.
He was born March 19, 1944, in Illinois. His parents were Elmer and Wilma (Willie) Schoppe.
He grew up and attended school in Illinois.
He retired to Butternut.
He is survived by his mother; two brothers, John (Monica) of Kingston, IL, and Mark (Rita) of Bartlett, IL; and a nephew.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.
Thomas
Shirley Ann Thomas, 55, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Eagle River Memorial Hospital.
At her request, a celebration of new life will be held at a later date.
She was born Dec. 9, 1943. Her parents were James and Sylvia (Chatterson) Lawver.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Chicago, IL, for over 25 years. She enjoyed crafts, baking and gardening, and her grandchildren were her favorite hobby.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Thomas of Three Lakes; two daughters, Liza Jean Thomas and Sylvia Thomas, both of Three Lakes; a son, Christopher (Roberta) Thomas of Eagle River; five grandchildren; two brothers, John and Lou; and six sisters, Aggie, Linda, Darlene, Dora, Edna and Eleanor; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother and sister.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or Eagle River Memorial Hospital.
Prohaska-Watson
Jannette F. Prohaska-Watson, 32, of Fifield, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Flambeau Hospital, Park Falls, after a 25-year battle with diabetes.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Family Worship Center, Fifield; Rev. Terry Wilson officiating.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at the church on Saturday, Jan. 9, from 1 p.m. until the hour of service.
She was born Aug. 4, 1966, in Milwaukee. Her parents are Annette (LeDuc) and the late Gerald Prohaska.
She attended St. John's Elementary School in South Milwaukee and graduated high school from St. Mary's Academy in Milwaukee.
She moved to Fifield in 1997.
She is survived by her mother; two brothers, Joseph Prohaska of Phillips and Mark (Joan) Prohaska of Park Falls; a sister, Karen Prohaska of Park Falls; a special friend, Phyllis Fusak of Phillips; her former husband, Rocky Watson of Cherokee, OK, and by nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father in July of 1998.
