Donald C. Pechacek, 77
Donald C. Pechacek, 77, of Ellsworth died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at his home with his family.
He was born on Oct. 8, 1921, in the town of Trimbelle, the son of Carl and Lenora (Teusaw) Pechacek.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, during World War II. He was assigned to the 28th Division Company G of the 109th Infantry. In 1944 he transferred to the Second Ranger Battalion, Company F of Rudders Rangers.
He was a participant in many major campaigns while with the rangers, most notably the scaling of the cliffs of Pointe de Hoc, and the liberation of Grand Camp. He was awarded a Purple Heart for a wound he received during the taking of Castle Hill in the town of Birdenstein, at the edge of the Battle of the Bulge.
He was recently awarded the Rangers Order of St. Maurice, which is granted to those who have exemplified bravery, gallantry, a high standard of morals and integrity in serving their country. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945, and then returned to Ellsworth.
It was during his training in Wales that he met his future wife, Elizabeth "Peg" Kinsella. They were married July 17, 1947, in Niagara Falls, N.Y. She died on July 18 of this year.
He farmed and worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier for 25 years.
He will be remembered for his beautiful gardens and delicious sweet corn. He was a member of Kinne-Engelhart American Legion Post #204, Ellsworth, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus and an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Ellsworth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Lenora; and his wife, Peg.
He is survived by his eight children: Colleen Baker of Minneapolis, Rita L. and Jack Cudd of River Falls, Tracy Lee Pechacek of Maplewood, Minn., Donna A. Pechacek and Randy Witthus of Hudson, Donald Pechacek, Jr. and Lisa Radkey of River Falls, Maureen Pechacek and Maynard Howe of San Diego, Timothy Pechacek of Ellsworth and Angela and Len McMorrow of Robbinsdale, Minn.; grandchildren: Tessa, Tina, Brady, Jerod, Molly, Collin, Jacob, Logan, Kindra, Zachary, Connor, Quinn and Kara and Steve Simmons; two great-grandchildren: Sierra and Anna Marie Simmons; two brothers and two sisters: Gerald P. and Marie Pechacek of Ellsworth, Carl and Donna Pechacek of Ellsworth, Dorothy and Marvin Ottman of Ellsworth and Evelyn Bonte of New Richmond.
Funeral was Tuesday, Nov. 17, at St. Francis Catholic Church with the Rev. Justin Kane officiating.
Donald and Peg's cremated remains will be interred together at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, at 11 a.m., Thursday.
Sheldon O. Siebold, 80
Sheldon O. Siebold, 80, of River Falls, and formerly of Hammond, died at The Lutheran Home: River Falls, on Monday, Nov. 9, 1998.
He was born in Cottage Grove, Minn., on Dec. 23, 1917, the son of Edwin and Goldie (Cran) Siebold. He graduated from River Falls High School.
He married Dolores R. Frisk on June 12, 1941, at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. He served in the U.S. Army for 8 years and was stationed in Europe during World War II. He was discharged from the Army as a First Sergeant.
During their 57 years of marriage, Sheldon and Dolores raised a family of six children. Sheldon owned a restaurant, was a dairy farmer for 18 years, was the Hammond Golf Course manager for several years, and owned and operated Siebold Realty in Hammond until his retirement in 1985.
Sheldon was also on the St. Croix Central School Board and was a member of the Board of Realtors, Hammond Lion's Club as a charter member, American Legion for 50 years and the Trinity Lutheran Church and Trinity Church Council.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Goldie; and one brother, Merritt.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores, of River Falls; his children: Wayne and Kay of Sarasota, Fla., Gary of River Falls, Bruce and Terry of Menomonie, Darryl of Stillwater, Minn., Brad and Janet of Andover, Minn., and Gwynne Jenson of Luck; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Claude Siebold of Prior Lake, Minn.; his sisters: Fern Taylor of Selah, Wash., and Viona Krager of Hudson; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral was Friday, Nov. 13, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hammond, with the Rev. Tanya Rist officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Cashman Mortuary provided arrangements.
Wayne I. Stewart, 87
Wayne Irvin Stewart, 87, of River Falls, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998.
He was born Jan. 16, 1911, in River Falls, the son of Irvin and Matilda (Wolf) Stewart. He married Delores Halverson on Sept. 16, 1935.
He was a Main Street businessman in River Falls from 1936-1966, owning and operating Stewart's Tire and Battery Service. His interests included boating, bow hunting and piloting small airplanes.
After retirement, Wayne and Delores spent winters in Orlando, Fla., and summers at their cabin in Minong.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Matilda; his brother, Marshall; and his sisters, Irene and Genevieve.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Delores; his son, Charles; a nephew, Jim Stewart; a niece, Vonnie Hoel; and a sister-in-law, Peg Stewart.
Funeral was Saturday, Nov. 14, at Cashman Mortuary. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Dave Knott, Roland Baker, Jim Stewart, Harold Halverson, Howard Halverson and Danny Simonson.
Honorary pallbearer was Harry Knott.

Evelyn Barlow, 76
Evelyn "Evie" Barlow, 76, of Roberts, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at Region's Hospital in St. Paul, of complications following surgery.
She was born July 17, 1922, in Dundee, Minn., the daughter of Lloyd and Lillian (Courtright) Van Norman. She was raised and attended school in Dundee.
She lived and worked in St. Paul for many years. While there, she worked as a nursing attendant, caring for the health and personal needs of her patients. She also worked for Armour's meat processing plant in So. St. Paul.
She married Stanley Johnson and together they raised four children. They later divorced.
In 1967 she moved to Roberts when she bought a bar on Main Street. She operated the business for many years and was well known in the Roberts community. She sold the bar in 1980. Currently "Evie's Bar" is called L&M's. Upon her retirement, she was able to do some traveling and especially enjoyed time at her son Gary's cabin in northern Minnesota. She also bar-tended part-time until a few years ago.
She was active in the local darts league and was an excellent darts player and pool player. She frequently traveled to New Richmond, Baldwin, River Falls and Hudson to play, and as a result, developed many friendships in those communities. She also enjoyed fishing, especially at Elm Island Lake, and visiting the casinos and trying her hand at Black Jack.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Lillian; her brothers: Melvin and Eugene Van Norman; her sister, Helen Barnes; and her grandson, John A. Johnson.
She is survived by her sons: Gary L. and Hazel Johnson of St. Paul, Dennis M. and Diane Johnson of Cottage Grove, Minn.; her daughters: Judith A. and Clarence Shaw of St. Paul, and Mary Lou and Terry Frederick of Roberts; her sisters: Pearl Hagen of Mankato, Minn., Ione Peterson of Sauk Center, Minn.; and her grandchildren: Kelly Jo and Nathan Hetrick, John R. Frederick, Joseph N. Frederick, Tom and Denise Johnson, David Johnson, Sarah Johnson, Tina Johnson, Mark Johnson, and Lisa Johnson; great-grandchildren: Justin Johnson, Joshua Johnson, Nicole Johnson, Brandy Johnson, Latishann M. Johnson, DeQuay A. Johnson, Destany M. Johnson-Yarborough and DaJoun M. Johnson-Yarborough.
Funeral was Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Roberts United Congregational Church of Christ in Roberts, with the Rev. James Burd officiating. Mary Fern accompanied on the organ with congregational singing.
Pallbearers were: Terry Dull, Todd Dull, Michael Kamm, Walt Johnson, Kyle Kempf, and Trevor Kempf. Honorary pallbearers were: Dick Colbeth, Emmett Polen, Kevin Kempf, Don Gillis, Leon Stork and Charlie Grupe.
Memorials are preferred.
Marie F. Ickler, 84
Marie Frances Ickler, 84, of Hammond, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul as a result of injuries received from an automobile accident that same day at the intersection of Hwy. 12 and Hwy. 63, north of Baldwin.
She was born on Feb. 15, 1914, in St. Paul, the daughter of Joseph and Wilamenia (Flaspeter) Brandeman.
She attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School in E. St. Paul. She was baptized, received her First Communion and was confirmed at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
She married Leonard Ickler on March 10, 1935, at the rectory of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Paul. They farmed in Woodbury, Minn., until 1957, and from 1957-1987, they farmed in Roberts. Since 1988 they lived in the American Heritage Apartments in Hammond, where Marie had a garden.
When Marie was farming she raised chickens and sold the eggs in St. Paul. In later life she enjoyed socializing and feeding the birds at her apartment, traveling, collecting cookbooks, embroidering and dancing.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Joseph Brandeman; two grandchildren, Michelle Cernohous and Sharyl Ptacek.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard; two daughters: Delores and Herman Heinbuch of Hammond, and Carol and Paul Cernohous of Spooner; a son: Robert and Barbara Ickler of Roberts; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hammond with the Rev. Charles Murphy officiating. Mary Cody was organist and the St. Mary's Choir sang.
Renee Heinbuch was lector. Gift bearers were Megan and Jenna Heinbuch.
Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Pallbearers were her great-grandsons: Jason Heinbuch, Mitch Ptacek, Billy Volkert, Nate Ptacek, Andy Heinbuch and Danny Volkert.
LeRoy Sampson, 88
LeRoy "Sam" Sampson, 88, of River Falls, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at the Kinnic Long Term Care center.
He was born May 22, 1910, in Minneapolis, the son of Samson and Margaret (Johnson) Sampson. He farmed and ran the LaCrescent Motel in LaCrescent, Minn. He also worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation until his retirement in July of 1975.
He was Past Master of Morning Star Masonic Lodge #29 F. & A.M. in LaCrescent and Past Worthy Patron of Evening Star Chapter #71, Order of the Eastern Star, also in LaCrescent.
He married Ann Dravis Brewer on May 2, 1950.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his wife, Ann, of River Falls; one daughter, Carel and Nelson Hoskins of Ottumwa, Iowa; three grandchildren: Laurie Hoskins, Randall Hoskins and Michelle Londrigan; and four great-grandchildren.
A Masonic memorial service was held Sunday, Dec. 27, at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home in Prescott. Interment of cremated remains was to be in Pine Glen Cemetery, Prescott.

Josephine B. Webster, 82
Josephine B. "Jo" Webster, 82, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at the Columbus Health and Rehab Center, Columbus, Ind.
She was born Oct. 24, 1916, in Beardstown, Ill., the daughter of Charles Dann and Mary Barker. She graduated from high school in Beardstown. She was a nurse through the late 1940s, and then went into private nursing services. She attended IUPUI in New Albany and received a 4-year nursing degree in 1966. She worked in Columbus Regional Hospital while obtaining her RN degree.
She worked at Schnick Memorial Hospital in Seymour where she retired. She later worked for the North Vernon Extended Care Nursing Home.
She married Robert P. Webster on April 17, 1938, in Beardstown. He died in May of 1991.
She attended the First Baptist Church of North Vernon. She was a member and past matron of the North Vernon Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Rolling Hills Shrine ladies auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; and two brothers: Forest Dann and Charles Dann, Jr.
She is survived by a son, Charles C. Webster of Roberts; her grandchildren: James Webster and Robert Webster of North Vernon, Ind., Daniel Webster of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jeanna Marsh of Mobile, Ala.; a sister, Ruth Newbern of Beardstown; six great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Webster of Beardstown.
Funeral was Tuesday, Dec. 29, at the Pickett Funeral Home, North Vernon, Ind. Connie Barr officiated.
Burial was in Vernon, Ind.
