John J. Welk, 58, of Madison, and formerly of Park Falls, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at his home.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Madison; Father Al Ebach officiating.
Visitation is at the church from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday.
He was born Nov. 6, 1941, in Emmons County, ND. His parents were John and Barbara (Welder) Welk.
He attended Valley City State University in Valley City, ND, and was a member of the Valley City State University Athletic Hall of Fame.
He married Janet Pfann May 27, 1967, in Casselton, ND.
He spent 18 years in Park Falls, moving with his family to Madison in 1993.
He was a bank owner and insurance agent, retiring in 1987.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Stacy (Jay) Ferkovich and Amy Welk; a grandson, Aaron Ferkovich; six brothers, Aloys, Eugene, Leo, Don, Francis and Herman; two sisters, Sally Ibach and Ann Fitzsimmons.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Clarence, Alfred and Joe.
Gustafson
Gary "Gus" D. Gustafson, 57, a life-long resident of Superior, died Monday, March 6, 2000, in Superior.
Services were held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, Superior; Father Robert Krajewski officiating.
He was born July 23, 1942, in Superior.
He graduated from Superior Central High School in 1960, and from Superior State University in 1964, earning a degree in history.
He taught junior high school English and history in St. Croix Falls and Mellen, and coached basketball and baseball.
He was employed by Amsoil of Superior. He was previously employed at the U.S. Steel Plant in Gary New Duluth and the R.L. Polk Co. for many years.
He was an avid sports fan, a coach in the Babe Ruth league in Superior, coach of the Superior Red American Legion team, coach of the Bayside Vipers and a coach for many years in the Superior Hoop Basketball League.
He was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church.
He is survived by his mother, Stella Gustafson of Superior; a brother, Steven (Jane) Gustafson of Butternut; three sisters, Diane Beecher and Lynn (Dale) Lund, both of Duluth, MN, and Eileen (David) Larochelle of Superior; and by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Glen N. Gustafson.
Kempkes
Robert William (Bob) Kempkes, 78, of Phillips, died Friday, March 17, 2000, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Phillips.
Services were held Monday, March 20, at Our Lady of the North, Phillips; Father John Slowey officiating.
Interment was at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, with military rites under ahe auspices of Frank and Michael Baran Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5778 of Phillips.
He was born Jan. 1, 1922, in Fairbury, NE. His parents were Theodore and Mary Kempkes.
He attended schools there and attended Creighton University in Omaha, NE.
He served as a seaman in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Meade in the Pacific Theater.
Following the war, he married Nina Kirkwood of Hartford City, IN, and earned his master’s of education degree at the University of Nebraska.
Education was his passion. He was a teacher and administrator in Nebraska and in the Wisconsin communities of Barron, Horicon, Randolf, Princeton and Park Falls.
His favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing. He was a student of philosophy, mathematics, language, religion, astronomy and other subjects.
In 1970, Bob and Nina moved to Phillips where he became owner-editor of THE-BEE, a position he maintained until 1980 when he returned to education.
The couple retired to Phillips in 1992.
He was a member of Our Lady of the North Catholic Church and was a CCD instructor.
He is survived by his wife, Nina; a son, Ted (Becky) Kempkes of Phillips; a daughter, Mary (Rick) Vesper of Rice Lake; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pankratz
Gary Lee "Shakey" Pankratz, 49, of Glidden, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at his home.
A memorial service was held Saturday, March 18, at Mercy Church in Morse; Rev. Michael Zielke officiating.
He was born Feb. 1, 1951, in Park Falls. His parents are Raymond and Lucille (Griffith) Pankratz.
He graduated from Glidden High School in 1970.
He was a woodsman and logger, and loved hunting, fishing and the outdoors.
He is survived by his special friend and mother of his children, Patricia Zimmerman of Glidden; two children, August Peter Pankratz and Emma Bernice Pankratz, both of Glidden; his parents; a sister, Pauline Kempf of Oshkosh; and a nephew, Timothy Kempf of Oshkosh.
Stangl, Anthony L. Stangl died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the age of two months, eight days.
He was born Jan. 6, 2000.
Services were held at St. Bridget of Sweden Church.
Internment was in South Green Lake Cemetery in Minnesota.
He is survived by his parents, George and Diane Stangl of Chisago City, MN; grandparents, Pat and George Stangl Sr. of Minnesota and Tom and Dolores Thompson of Park Falls; and by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Bentz
Lloyd R. Bentz, 77, of Kaiser, MO, and formerly of Butternut, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center, Columbia, MO.
Services were held Thursday, March 23, at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon, MO; Rev. Kerry Presnell officiating.
Burial was in Hawthorne Cemetery, Jefferson City, MO.
He was born April 6, 1922, in Butternut. His parents were Herman Bentz and Emma Hett.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the 645th Tank Destroyer 45th Division, M-10 tanks. He served in Italy, Africa and France.
During the early 1950s, he enjoyed racing stock cars. He was owner of Bentz Marine, retiring in 1984. After retirement, he pursued his hobby of woodworking.
He married Joy L. McCombs Kohl June 5, 1948, in Rock Falls, IL.
He was a life member of The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disable American Veterans.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, David (Betty) Bentz of Lake Ozark, MO, and Donald (Judy) Kohl and Richard (Jeanette) Kohl, both of Sterling, IL; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Elain Balko of Milwaukee; and a brother; Gordon Bentz of Arizona.
Brockman
Yvonne Brockman, 60, of Cranmoor, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at the Palliative Care Unit of St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield.
Services were held Tuesday, March 28, at St. Alexander Catholic Church, Port Edwards; Rev. John Swing officiating.
Burial was in Babcock Cemetery.
She was born Feb. 28, 1940, in Park Falls. Her parents were Leonard and Marian (Pritzl) Dane.
She attended St. Anthony's School and graduated from Park Falls Lincoln High School.
She married Morris Brockman July 11, 1959, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Park Falls.
He was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting and her grandchildren. She was an active member of the Vesper Crocet Club for many years and was involved in the Cranmoor Homemakers Club and St. Elizabeth Altar Society.
She is survived by her husband; five children, Rebecca (Mark) Brockman-Schneider of Madison, Jennifer (Michael) Sievert of Cottage Grove, Rodney Brockman of Babcock, Warren (Jennifer) Brockman of Wisconsin Rapids and Adam Brockman of LaFarge; five grandchildren; two sisters, Janet Seefluth of Park Falls and Connie (Dennis) Yoerin of New Berlin; and a brother, Dan (Sandy) Dane of Park Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Dolores Griffin.
Holloway
Katherine E. "Flambeau Kate" Holloway, 89, of Park Falls, died Thursday, March 23, 2000.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Park Falls.
She was born June 26, 1910, in Park Falls. Her parents were John and Ingelborg Nelson.
She married Edward Holloway June 10, 1934, in Park Falls, and together they shared more than 65 years of marriage.
She attended school in Park Falls and was the school's first female cheerleader.
She wrote the Flowage News in The Herald under the name of "Flambeau Kate." She was a member of the American Red Cross, Eastern Star No. 702, and the Mercer Sno-Goers.
She attended all Packer games for 30 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Walker of Park Falls; a son, Dan (Diane) of Madison; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
