Leonard William Gruber, 84, of Park Falls, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, of complications following open heart surgery on Oct. 19, 1999.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Park Falls.
A Knights of Columbus Rosary service will be held at 8:30 a.m. at the church.
Burial will be in Nola Cemetery, Park Falls, with full military rights.
He was born May 31, 1915, in Eisenstein. His parents were William and Ella (Herbst) Gruber.
He married Josephine Rosella Ketterl Aug. 2, 1938, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Butternut. She was a part-time teacher at St. Anthony's School in Park Falls for many years. She preceded him in death Aug. 25, 1980.
He worked at the Park Falls Creamery from 1935 to 1942 and at Flambeau Paper Mill from 1942 to 1943 before leaving to fight in World War II.
He attained the rank of Tech Sergeant and was assigned to the 1277th Engineer Combat Battalion. He served in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland and in central Europe. He received the Croix de Guerre with Palm from Gen. Charles de Gaulle, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European, Africa, Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Battle Stars and three Overseas Service bars. He was honorably discharged Dec. 29, 1945.
He returned to Park Falls and continued his employment at Flambeau Paper Mill from 1946 until his retirement in 1979.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to play sheepshead and cribbage.
He was a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus of Park Falls, a 50-year member of The American Legion and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by a son, Dr. Jim (Mary Ann Cucich) Gruber; three grandsons; four sisters, Dori Ides and Marie (Jim) Svehla of Park Falls, Dolly Abel of Beloit and Marge Mayers of Morton Grove, IL; a brother, Bob of Park Falls; through marriage by Adeline Straus of Kaukauna, Caroline Vally of Harvey, IL, and Ted and Esther Ketterl of Marshfield; a special friend and neighbor, Bruce Gould; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; two sisters, Lucille Hilgart and Helen Tank; and two brothers, Edward and Bill Gruber.
A memorial has been established for St. Anthony's School in the name of Leonard and Josephine Gruber.
Lensing
Violet "Vi" C. Lensing, 74, of Glidden, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield.
Services were held Friday, Jan. 14, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Glidden; Rev. Michael Paholke officiating.
Burial will take place in the spring at Greenwood Cemetery in Morse.
She was born Nov. 8, 1925, in Chicago, IL. Her parents were James and Dancy (Marich) Rakovich.
She married Ed Lensing May 29, 1955, in Downers Grove, IL.
The couple moved to the Glidden area in 1970. They were owners and operators of Lensing True Value Hardware.
She was a board member of the Laura Jean Zach Center, coached the forensics teams at Glidden School for many years, served on the Glidden School Board, was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, was past president of and bookkeeper for the Mellen Country Club and served many community organizations.
She is survived by her husband; three children, Arilla Freeze of Winter Haven, FL, Kurt Lensing of Woodland Park, CO, and Joanne LaPlante of De Pere; her mother; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis (Boyce) Williams of Holiday Island, AR; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father; and a brother, James Rakovich Jr.
DeMars
Dorothy V. DeMars, 79, of El Centro, CA, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Scripps Memorial Hospital, LaJolla CA.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 27, at Nola Cemetery, Park Falls; Father James Jackson officiating.
She was born Aug. 13, 1920, in New Pargue, MN.
She married Arthur DeMars July 22, 1945, in San Diego, CA.
She lived in California for the last 37 years.
Before her marriage, she worked in the aircraft industry, helping with the B24 bomber during World War II.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Legion of Mary and the Yuma Post Fleet Reserve.
She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Cheryl (Bob) Hobson of Spring Valley, CA, Kathy (Kenny) Gonzales of Riverside, CA, and Susan (Ben) Graham of Imperial, CA; and by four grandchildren.
Hammond
Pearl Josephine Hammond, 93, of Park Falls, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Flambeau Hospital, Park Falls.
Services were held Saturday, Jan. 22, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Park Falls; Rev. Henry Boynton officiating.
Burial was in Nola Cemetery, Park Falls.
She was born Sept. 5, 1906, in Rosemount, MN. Her parents were Claude and Iva (Perry) Hanson.
She grew up and attended school in Custer, SD, and completed her schooling in Park Falls.
She married Herbert Hammond April 4, 1925, in Park Falls. He preceded her in death.
She was employed by the Park Falls Post Office, at Briggs and Stratton Company in Milwaukee, at the Anderson Grocery Store in Park Falls and by various other employers.
She was an active member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Park Falls.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Patricia Hammond of Park Falls; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Claudia Kulick of Stevens Point, Bertha (Bill) Bilbray of Florida and Dorothy (John) Postman of Arizona; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Robert; three brothers, Lavern, Perry and Owen Hanson; and two sisters, Edra Compton and Fern Kulick.
Krzeminski
Clarence J. Krzeminski, 75, of Park Falls, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Flambeau Hospital, Park Falls.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 27, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Park Falls; Father James Jackson officiating.
A Rosary, led by the Knights of Columbus, was said Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the church.
Burial will be in Nola Cemetery, Park Falls, with military rites under the auspices of Dirrigl-Sawales American Legion Post No. 182 of Park Falls.
He was born March 11, 1924, in Park Falls. His parents were Stephen and Frances (Perry) Krzeminski.
He grew up and attended school in Park Falls.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.
He married Mary Ann Enhelder Nov. 16, 1946, in Park Falls.
He was employed at Flambeau Paper Mill for 21 years. He then worked for the Park Falls Police Department and as a deputy for the Price County Sheriff's Department until his retirement.
He served as an alderman for the city of Park Falls.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and of Dirrigl-Sawales American Legion Post No. 182 of Park Falls.
He is survived by his wife; three children, Michael (Cydney) Krzeminski of Shawano, Mary Jo Koller of Park Falls and Roseann Jirschele of Park Falls; seven grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a sister, Agnes Peterson.
Martinson
Edwina R. Martinson, 66, of Northfield, MN, and formerly of Butternut, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Northfield Hospital.
Services were held Monday, Jan. 24, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Northfield, MN; Pastor John E. Quam officiating.
Burial will be in Winchester Cemetery, Winchester, WI, in the spring.
She was born Nov. 10, 1933, in Butternut. Her parents were Edwin and Meta (Boettcher) Timm.
She grew up and attended school in Butternut and was a graduate of Butternut High School.
She married Mekkel Martinson Nov. 29, 1952, in Waukegan, IL. He preceded her in death.
The couple spent many years of their lives together in Winchester. They moved to Hastings, MN, in April 1991. Her husband died soon after. She continued to live in Hastings until moving to Northfield in 1997.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
She is survived by two sons, Berwyn (Rachel) Martinson of White Bear Lake, MN, and Guy (Bonnie) Martinson of Albuquerque, NM: three daughters, Melissa Martinson of Stillwater, MN;, Michelle (Jeff) Distad of Northfield and Marge Martinson and special friend Jim Kemp of Hopkins, MN; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Dick (June) Timm of Butternut; and two sisters, Margaret (Wally) Engel of Winchester and Beulah Collins of New Castle, IN.
Bowlus
Lloyd M. Bowlus, 57, of Springstead, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at Roseau Area Hospital, Roseau, MN.
Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Manitowish Waters Community Church, Rev. Chips Paulson officiating.
He was born Feb. 22, 1942, in Chicago, IL. His parents are Melvin and Lorraine Bowlus.
He was an insurance salesman in Chicago for 25 years, working with Continental Insurance Co., Alexander and Alexander, Aon and A.J. Gallagher.
His love of the Northwoods brought him here in 1984 when he owned and operated the D-bar-D Resort.
After a brief return to Chicago, he returned the the Northwoods when he built North Country Sport Marine in Manitowish Waters in 1991. He operated the business until 1994.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding and racing snowmobiles, traveling and restoring antique cars.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Audra (Jim Dobravec) Bowlus of London, Ontario, and Dawn Bowlus of Iowa City, IA; his parents; a sister, Carole (Richard) Lee of Richmond, IN; and by uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Leukemia Society of America or Marshfield Clinic for Alzheimer's research.
