Elsie C. Samelstad, 93, of Wausau, and formerly of Park Falls, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at her daughter's home in Wausau under the care of Comfort Care Hospice Service of Wausau Hospital.
Services were held Saturday, Oct. 16, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Park Falls; Rev. Loren Barker officiating.
Burial was in Nola Cemetery, Park Falls.
She was born May 24, 1906, in Ogema. Her parents were John and Josephine (Jones) Ericson.
She spent her early life and attended school in Ogema, then moved to Minneapolis-St. Paul, where she graduated from high school.
She married Harry Samelstad July 6, 1926. He preceded her in death in 1982.
The couple moved to Park Falls in 1938.
A homemaker, she also worked for Robinson Bakery in Park Falls. She was owner/operator of Shorty's Bar and Cafe, the Mason Motel and Hi-Way Cafe, all in Park Falls.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, the White Shrine, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Ladies Aide of First Congregational United Church of Christ.
She is survived by a daughter, Violet (Edward) Kraft of Wausau, a son, Walter (Patricia) Samelstad of Rome, WI; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; and two sisters.
Memorials may be made to Comfort Care Hospice Service-Wausau Hospital, or First Congregational United Church of Christ in Park Falls.
Wojciuk
Stanley A. Wojciuk, 82, of Park Falls, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
He was born Aug. 17, 1917, in Milwaukee, and grew up in Milwaukee.
He married Florence Biscobing in Milwaukee. She preceded him in death in 1993.
He was self-employed in both Milwaukee and Park Falls.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by two sons, Michael of Park Falls and Stanley Jr. of Sullivan; and by other relatives and friends.
Doyle
Verna Doyle, formerly of the Oxbo and Draper areas, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999.
She was born in Draper, where her father was a railroad telegraph agent.
As a young woman, she grew up at her parent's Oxbo Resort and became an excellent boat handler on the Flambeau River. She became the first woman to hold a Wisconsin guide license. Among her clients was the late Gordon MacQuarrie, who wrote about her in the Milwaukee Journal.
It was at Oxbo Resort that she developed her appreciation for wilderness and its creatures. For a number of years, she appeared at sport shows throughout the Midwest with her fawns or bear cubs and she was often featured in outdoor articles.
She graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in communication arts.
She married Robert Doyle in 1940. He became a war correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal.
During the war, she taught high school in Draper and later worked at organizing volunteers for the Office of Price Administration, a wartime agency.
After the war, she and her husband moved to Madison where Verna put her love of animals to use by nurturing injured or orphaned creatures from the Vilas Park Zoo. Included were two newborn lion cubs which had been rejected by their mother. Verna and her family nursed the cubs back to health and gave them run of the household for three months.
She did volunteer work for the Mendota State Hospital and Red Cross and in later years was an enthusiastic participant and mentor in recovery fellowship.
She is survived by a son, Greg (Sandra) of Madison; a daughter, Shelley (Daniel) Borreson of Eau Claire; and three grandchildren.
Abfalder
Hazel Marie Abfalder, 75, of Butler, and formerly of Park Falls, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Froedert Hospital, Wauwatosa.
Burial was at Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield.
She was born March 31, 1924, in Park Falls and grew up and attended school in Park Falls, graduating from Park Falls Lincoln High School in 1941. Her parents were Bohumil and Mary (Smetak) Malach.
She married Andrew J. Abfalder of Milwaukee Oct. 2, 1942. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1992.
They lived in Park Falls, Milwaukee and Butler.
She is survived by her husband; four sons, Lawrence of Milwaukee, Michael (Cheryl) and Andrew Jr., both of Butler, and Joseph (Lynn) of Neenah; four grandchildren; a sister, Beatrice (Jerome) Johnson of Park Falls; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Annette Young; and four brothers, Rudolph, Joseph, Albert and Stanley Malach.
Hug
Christine D. Hug, 86, of Park Falls, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at her home.
Services were held Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Novitzke Funeral Home Chapel, Park Falls; Rev. Henry Boynton officiating.
Burial was in Nola Cemetery, Park Falls.
She was born June 8, 1913, in Doering. Her parents were Chris and Freda (Pruess) Magdlin.
She and her husband, Hans, owned and operated the Swiss Craft Embroidery Company in Chicago, IL.
She moved to Park Falls in 1986, following her retirement.
She is survived by a sister, Hilda Richson of Park Falls; by numerous nieces and nephews; and by friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother; and two sisters.
Jonassen
Martha F. Jonassen, 83, of Park Falls, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at Flambeau Hospital, Park Falls.
Services were held Monday, Nov. 15, at the Novitzke Funeral Home Chapel, Park Falls; Rev. Henry Boynton officiating.
Burial was in Forest Home Cemetery, Fifield.
She was born Oct. 18, 1916, in Cicero, IL. Her parents were George and Florence (Wiedenhaus) Grimes.
She grew up and attended school in Illinois.
She married Otto Jonassen July 15, 1939, in Chicago, IL. He preceded her in death in 1997.
The couple moved to Fifield in 1958. They owned and operated 3 Mile Tavern in Fifield.
She also worked for St. Croix Rod Company in Park Falls for 20 years, retiring in 1986.
She is survived by a daughter, Janice (Gary) Ocker of Fifield; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Isabelle Sherman and Mae Voltz; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Jonassen of Des Plaines, IL, and Dorothy Jonassen of Woodstock, IL; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and by five sisters and four brothers.
Klockow
Marion P. Klockow, 70, died Saturday, Nov. 6, at her home in Butternut.
Services were held Thursday, Nov. 11, at Zwaska Funeral Home, Brown Deer. A mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Nov. 12. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Brown Deer.
She was born Sept. 29, 1929, in Milwaukee.
She worked for Firemans Fund for 20 years, retiring in 1993.
She worked at Wisconsin Office and Data Systems, Inc., from 1993 to 1996.
She moved to Butternut in 1996.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen (Art) Schneider of Butternut and Cindy (Dan) Peters of Brown Deer; a son, Randy (Linda) Klockow of Jackson; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister; three brothers; and by many nieces and nephews.
