William J. Kurosker, 84, of Park Falls, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Phillips.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Park Falls Masonic Temple.
Burial of cremains will be in Nola Cemetery, Park Falls.
He was born March 23, 1915, in Medford. His parents were Julius and Elizabeth (Krueger) Kurosker.
He married Mabel Boettcher March 17, 1938, in Park Falls. She was a cosmetologist in Park Falls for many years and preceded him in death.
He was a resident of Park Falls early in his career and after retirement in 1978.
He studied at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He worked as a welder and welder foreman in heavy construction of powerhouses throughout the United States.
He is survived by his brother-in-law, Murlin Boettcher of Park Falls, three nephews, including David (Carol) Boettcher of Park Falls; and by other relatives and friends.
Urquhart
Leonard "Buck" Urquhart, 85, of Park Falls, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Flambeau Hospital, Park Falls.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Novitzke Funeral Home, Park Falls.
He was born June 8, 1914, in Medford and grew up and attended school in Medford. His parents were Norman Anthony and Blanche (Seek) Urquhart.
He married Eleanor Dolan June 12, 1943, in Iowa. She preceded him in death in 1981.
The couple moved to Park Falls in 1950.
He was a game warden until his retirement in 1960 and later became a sales manager at St. Croix Rod Company in Park Falls.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by five children, Jim (Nina) Urquhart of Stone Lake, Mary (Charles) Mickel of Golden, CO, Elizabeth Urquhart of Madison, Kenneth (Kay) Urquhart of Forest Lake, MN, and Stephen Urquhart of Chisago City, MN; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jean Perrin of Wolf Island, Ontario, and Nona Thomas of Dallas, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Cathleen; and a brother, Donald.
Becker
Gladys Becker, 83, of Pike Lake, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Flambeau Hospital, Park Falls.
A memorial service was held Monday, Oct. 11, at the Novtizke Funeral Home, Park Falls; Rev. Loren Barker officiating.
She was born Sept. 11, 1916, in Ashland. Her parents were Jacob and Ida (Anderson) Maetke.
She grew up and attended school in Ashland and Ironwood, MI, and graduated from high school in Ashland.
She moved to Milwaukee, where she worked as a secretary at various businesses in the Milwaukee and Waukesha areas.
She married Robert Becker in Milwaukee upon his return from World War II. He preceded her in death in 1969.
The couple moved to Pewaukee, where they raised their family. She worked as a secretary at Pewaukee High School. She retired in 1976, at which time she moved to the Pike Lake area.
She is survived by a son, Robert (Dianne) Becker of Machesney Park, IL, a daughter, Mary Ann (Edward) Schwalbach of Racine; four grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn (Raymond) Kwaitkowski of Oconomowoc and Doris Kurensky of Ashland; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Grace; and a brother, Gordon.
Bourgard
Elizabeth R. Bourgard, 76, of Park Falls, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Flambeau Hospital, Park Falls.
A memorial service was held Friday, Oct. 8, at Peace Lutheran Church, Park Falls; Paster Stanley Bahn officiating.
Burial was in Nola Cemetery, Park Falls.
She was born Jan. 16, 1923, in Park Falls, and grew up and attended school in Park Falls. Her parents were Edward and Emma Bourgard.
She was employed at Flambeau Paper Co.
She is survived by sisters-in-law Clara and Helen Bourgard; and by nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and by three brothers, Dennis, Lester and Laverne Bourgard.
Esterl
Lucy Esterl, 82, of Park Falls, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Park Manor Nursing Home, Park Falls.
Services were held Friday, Oct. 8, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Park Falls; Father James Jackson officiating.
Burial was in Nola Cemetery, Park Falls.
She was born Jan. 28, 1917, in New London and grew up and attended school in New London. Her parents were Edward and Lillian (Ziemer) Bleck.
She graduated from Central Stevens Point Teachers College in 1939 and began her teaching career in Park Falls, where she met her husband, George Esterl. They were married June 7, 1943. He preceded her in death in 1990.
She continued to teach throughout her life at schools in Park Falls, Fifield and Butternut.
She was a life-long member of St. Anthony's Parish. She especially loved her grandchildren, a special neighbor and her birthday group.
She is survived by two children, Jane (Gary) Hauboldt of Mosinee and Peter (Marge) Esterl of Butternut; two sisters, Vera Mae Kjer and Hazel Gotham, both of Stevens Point; four sisters-in-law, Evelyn Esterl of Park Falls, Jean Bleck of New London, Pauline Peters of Sun City, AZ, and Margaret MacDonald of Bedford, NY; five grandchildren; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Kenneth Bleck.
Memorials may be made to the Park Falls Elementary School library.
Yankee
Earl Yankee, 98, of Sussex, and formerly of Park Falls, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999.
Services were held Monday, Oct. 4, at the Schmidt Funeral Home, Sussex.
He was born Sept. 26, 1901, in Butternut. His parents were Emil and Frieda (Zoesch) Yankee.
He grew up and attended school in Butternut.
He married Venice Mason Sept. 10, 1922, in Bessemer, MI. She preceded him in death in 1965.
He was employed by Flambeau Paper Co. in Park Falls for 31 years. He retired in 1966.
He is survived by two daughters, Delores (John) Wallner and Muriel "Boots" (Wayne) Tyree, both of Sussex; and by other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Gabrielsen
Stan O. Gabrielsen, 80, of Phillips, and formerly of Winter, died Sunday, June 13, 1999.
Services were held Wednesday, June 16, at St. John Lutheran Church, Phillips; Rev. Thomas Reiff officiating.
Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery, Phillips, with military rites under the auspices of Lane Kreiling American Legion Post No. 122.
He was born Sept. 19, 1918, in Chicago, IL. His parents were Ole and Gerda (Bredsten) Gabrielsen.
The family moved to Winter when he was a child. He graduated from Winter High School in 1936 and attended Eau Claire Teachers College from 1938 to 1941.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 and saw action in the European Theatre during World War II.
He married Donna McCoy Dec. 26, 1945, in Eau Claire. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1995.
He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and went on to earn a master's degree in administration from the University of Minnesota.
He was employed as a science teacher and athletic director in the Winter School District from 1945 to 1953. He served as superintendent of the Bruce School District until 1959 and as superintendent of the Phillips School District from 1959 to 1974.
He and his wife owned and operated the Phillips Land and Title Company from 1974 until their retirement in 1978.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and served on the church council for many years. He was a member of Gideons International, the Phillips Regional Writers, the Southern Price County Health Care Corporation and the Retired Teachers Association. He was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, serving as a state director and reminiscence coordinator for a five-state area. He was a member of Lane Kreiling American Legion Post No. 122 of Phillips and of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a former member of the Phillips Rotary Club and was a charter organizational representative of Phillips Boy Scout Troop No. 540.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, playing cards and activities with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, James (Carol) Gabrielsen and Gary (Kandi) Gabrielsen, both of Phillips; a daughter, Peggy Straight of Phillips; five grandchildren; and a brother, Ben (Kathy) Gabrielsen of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ray; and a sister, Rachael.
