LaVerne Semingson
LaVerne L. Semingson, 82, formerly of 815 Chapin St, Eau Claire, passed away June 8, 2001, at Christian Community Nursing Home in Hudson, Wis.
LaVerne Lillian Mathwig began life on July 15, 1918, as the fifth of six children delivered to Helen and August Wilhelm Mathwig. Born in Lincoln Township, she spent her childhood there on a farm. At the young age of 16, she moved to Eau Claire to work at a boarding house operated by Anna Hanson, who was soon to become her sister-in-law. A frequent visitor to the boarding house was Anna's younger brother, Peder. This petite young lady with a full-size personality caught Peder Semingson's eye. He was immediately smitten by this young charmer, a proposal for marriage was offered, and they were soon married. Pete and Laverne were together for 59 years until his death five years ago.
Several key words are necessary to describe LaVerne: mother, wife, homemaker, volunteer, employee, teacher and grandmother. LaVerne was the mother of four children. Her remarkable skills in the kitchen have been passed on to her children and in her senior years to her adoring grandchildren.
For many years, LaVerne gave generously of her time and talents to Epiphany Lutheran Church where she held several officer positions with the Sunday School program. She was a member of Epiphany Alter Guild, Ladies Aid and Lutheran Women's Missionary League for many years. She also enjoyed belonging to the Comus Ballroom Dance Club where she and Peder shared many good times.
Friends and co-workers at Alden's, Seifert's, American National Bank and Prange's fondly remember LaVerne's hard work and dedicated efforts. Her grandchildren in Eau Claire and California are thankful for the opportunity to travel with, learn from and love this energetic and always young at heart grandma.
LaVerne is survived by her children, Joyce (Dave) Jenson of Hudson, Steven (Rosie) Semingson of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Pamela (Gary) Fenner of Eau Claire; sisters Irene Gonitzke of Osseo, Helen Zillmer of Chippewa Falls, brother Erick Mathwig of Fall Creek; nine grandchildren, Todd Semingson, Julie Drake, Tina Alexander, Shelly Semingson, Sam Semingson, Jacob Fenner, Andrew Fenner, Brian Jenson, Stephen Jenson; great grandchild Ashley Drake; nieces and nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Peder in 1996; a daughter Sharon; one brother Wilhelm "Bill" Mathwig; a sister Nora Reetz; and a grandson Daniel Jenson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Epiphany Lutheran Church, Eau Claire. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
