Carl R. Meier, 66, of Butternut, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at Flambeau Hospital, Park Falls.
A memorial service was held Friday, March 26, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Butternut; Rev. Michael Paholke officiating.
Burial will be in Butternut Union Cemetery.
He was born Dec. 5, 1932, in Butternut. His parents were Gustave and Helen (Andre) Meier.
He grew up and attended school in Butternut. After graduation, he moved to Milwaukee, where he was employed at the Oster factory.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1953 and served for two years, during the Korean Conflict. After service, he returned to Milwaukee and the Oster factory.
He returned to Butternut in 1964, where he was employed by the Butternut veneer mill, Knoops Service Station, the Butternut Co-op Feed Mill and as a pulp truck driver and logger.
He was a well-known concertina player. He played in many area bands and had his own band, the Carl Meier Band.
He is survived by seven children, David (Lisa) Meier of Milwaukee, Sherrie Meier of Chicago, IL, Rick (Beth) Maier of Elgin, IL, Kathy Meier of Minneapolis, Wayne (Gail) Meier of Butternut, Debbie Smith of Park Falls and Karen (Mark) Willmsen of Glidden; 19 grandchildren; his mother; a brother, Clarence (Alice) Meier of Gillette; three sisters, Eleanor (Willard) Drott, Betty Meier and Dar Yeske, all of Butternut; his former wife, Barbara of Milwaukee; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother-in-law, Hillman "Slim" Yeske.
Owen
Charles "Chick" Owen, 66, of Park Falls, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Park Manor Nursing Home, Park Falls.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 5, at the Novitzke Funeral Home Chapel.
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday, April 5, from 5 p.m. until the hour of the service.
He was born Sept. 12, 1932, in Minneapolis, MN. His parents were Shubel and Janet (Spooner) Owen.
He moved with his family to Marshfield in 1943 and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1950.
He married Marlene Behrens Sept. 1, 1954, in Marshfield.
He received his bachelor's degree from Carlton College in Northfield, MN, in 1955.
He worked for Cargill Grain in Minneapolis, MN, and in Memphis, TN; taught and coached at Culver Academy in Culver, IN; and worked in the building business as a manager of Southern Illinois Lumber Company in Fairfield, IL.
In 1971, he moved to Park Falls, where he owned Timberline Lumber Company.
In 1978, he began a 19-year teaching and coaching career at Park Falls High School.
He earned his master's degree from Mankato State University in Mankato, MN, in 1980.
He was past presdent of the Park Falls Lions Club, the Park Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and Park Falls Country Club.
He was a well-known woodcarver and participated in art fairs in a three-state area. While known for his wildlife carvings, he also was commissioned to do other types of woodcarving all over the United States.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Jodi (Carl) Belter of Rhinelander; a son, Jed (Stephanie) Owen of Fond du Lac; six grandchildren; his mother; a brother, S. Hudson (Soo) Owen of Marshfield; a sister, Judy (Bruce) Taylor of Virginia Beach, VA; four nieces; a nephew; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Memorials may be made to the Widen Our World (WOW) Fund in care of Park Falls High School or to the junior golf league in care of Park Falls Country Club.
Svehla
Jerome "Jerry" Svehla, 80, of Fifield, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at Flambeau Hospital, Park Falls.
Services were held Monday, March 29, 1999, at the Novitzke Funeral Home Chapel, Park Falls; Rev. Thomas Reiff officiating.
Burial was at Forest Home Cemetery, Fifield.
He was born Sept. 2, 1918, in Fifield. His parents were Joseph and Albina (Verveka) Svehla.
He grew up and attended school in Fifield.
He farmed for a time, then became a mechanic and moved to Illinois, where he lived until his retirement.
He married Jean Muszynski July 13, 1944. She preceded him in death in 1979.
He married Gloria Podvin-Luzar May 24, 1980, in Harvey, IL.
He is survived by his wife; three children, Jerome "Jay" (Gail) Svehla of Glendale Heights, IL, Elayne Svehla of West Chicago, IL, and Andrew Svehla, also of West Chicago, IL; 10 step-children, Alga (Gerry) Fouts of Harvey, IL, Gloria (Elton) Wagnon of Dora, AL, Elizabeth Webb and Rudolph Luzar Jr., both of Saulk Village, IL, Ernestine (Jerry) VanDerLinde of Chicago Heights, IL, Clayde Luzar Sr. of Midolthian, IL, Monty Luzar of Grand Rapids, MI, Kenneth (Gail) Luzar Sr. of Plainfield, IL, Frank Luzar Sr. of Pottscamp, MS, and Catherine (Jeffrey) Feranec of Phillips; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; many step-grandchildren; a brother, Con Svehla of Texas; a sister, Libby Svehla of Adams-Friendship; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife; a daughter, Beverly Phender; three sisters, Mae, Dagmar and Zora; and a brother, John.
Dillinger
Donald E. "Poncho-Dilly" Dillinger, 42, of South Milwaukee, died Monday, April 5, 1999, at his home.
Services were held Friday, April 9, 1999, at the Novitzke Funeral Home Chapel, Park Falls; Father Al Ebach officiating.
Burial was in Nola Cemetery, Park Falls.
He was born April 1, 1957, in Cudahy. His parents were Robert and Dorothy (Billing) Dillinger.
He grew up and attended school in South Milwaukee, working part-time at the Cudahy Ziebart plant.
After school, he was employed at the Milwaukee Travel Center truck stop between Milwaukee and Chicago.
He resided with his parents until they moved to Park Falls in 1976. He then resided with his grandparents.
He worked for many years as a mechanic at a hometown service station and worked for a short time at the Hynite fertilizer plant in Carrollville.
He then returned to the truck stop, where he was employed for 24 years as an assistant manager in the maintenance department.
He married Donna Binkowski April 1, 1988, in Milwaukee.
His interests included movies, fishing, Nascar and drag racing, collecting Nascar items and working on cars.
He is survived by his mother; two brothers, Ronald of South Milwaukee and Daniel (Theresa) of Merrill; two sisters, Carol Jaeger of Athens and Debra Miller of Park Falls; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father; and by his grandparents.
Dural
Robert J. Dural, 57, of Park Falls, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at Flambeau Hospital, Park Falls.
Services were held Saturday, April 10, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Park Falls; Father Al Ebach officiating.
A parish prayer vigil was held Friday, April 9, at the church.
Burial was in Nola Cemetery, Park Falls.
He was born May 28, 1941, in Ironwood, MI. His parents were Paul and Amelia (Bunjevac) Dural.
He graduated from Ironwood High School in 1959.
He attended Gogebic College in Ironwood, then transferred to Michigan State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in science. He went on to earn a masters degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
He married Sandra Maki Feb. 27, 1965, in Ironwood, MI.
He was a science teacher at Park Falls Lincoln Junior High School for 34 years.
He was a very active hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Robert P. (Ronda) Dural of Butternut; a daughter, Lori (Daniel) Linsmeyer of Rhinelander; two grandchildren; his mother; a brother, Paul (Sandra) Dural of Owosso, MI; and by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Johnston
Mary (McKillop) Johnston, 100, died Friday, March 27, 1999, at Park Manor Nursing Home, Park Falls.
Services were held Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Zimmerman-Sandeman Memorial Chapel, Oak Lawn, IL.
Burial was in Chapel Hills Gardens, Worth, IL.
She was born Jan. 25, 1899, in Northern Ireland and came to America in 1923. Her parents were Thomas (Margaret Aiken) McKillop.
She resided with her family in the Chicago area, where she met and married William J. Johnston, also of Northern Ireland, in 1926.
Her only child, Margaret (Curtis) Thatcher was born in 1929.
She was employed by the Nabisco Corp. in Chicago until her retirement in 1965.
After the death of her husband in 1982, she resided with her family in Illinois and California, and moved to Park Manor Nursing Home in January 1998.
She is survived by a daughter, Margaret (Curtis) Thatcher of Park Falls; three grandchildren, including Dr. Dean W. (Cindy) Funk of Park Falls; six great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews in the United States and Northern Ireland.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers, Thomas, Hugh, Andrew, Robert and James McKillop; and three sisters, Esther McClelland, Agnes Moorhead and Margaret Robinson.
Kubichek
Lucy G. Kubichek, 74, of Park Falls, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield.
Services were held Saturday, April 10, at the Novitzke Funeral Home, Park Falls; Father Al Ebach officiating.
Private internment will take place at a later date.
She was born June 16, 1924, in Ladysmith. Her parents were Nels and Beatrice (St. Clair) Nelson.
She grew up and attended school in Hawkins.
She moved to Park Falls in 1979.
She was a homemaker.
She is survivied by three daughters, Cheryl Luri of Denver, CO, Linda (William) McGlynn of Lemont, IL, and Jane (John) Gerlach of Park Falls; eight grandchildren, Susan McGlynn, Jacob and Sarah Lurie, Candace, Katie and Molly Wirsing and Chelsey and Brittany Gerlach; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and by two brothers, Orrin and James Nelson.
