Ervin L. Thorstenson, 75, Medford, died Wednesday, April 26 at Continental Manor Nursing Home in Abbotsford.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 29 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Rev. Dennis Meulemans officiating. Burial took place at Medford Catholic Cemetery with graveside veteran rites. Pallbearers were his five sons.
Hemer Funeral Home of Medford assisted the family with arrangements.
Ervin Thorstenson was born on August 8, 1924 at Rhinelander to the late Lawrence and Catherine (Gorichs) Thorstenson. He attended Battle Lake, Minn. schools and graduated in 1942 from Rhinelander High School. He also attended Forestry School in Rhinelander. He moved from Rhinelander to Battle Lake as a youngster, and later returned to Rhinelander. He served with the US Army from 1943-46 in Africa, Italy, and Okinawa. After his discharge and forestry school, he served as a conservation aid with the Wisconsin Conservation Department.
His marriage to Doris R. Stroik, who survives, took place on June 15, 1946 at Rhinelander. In 1956 they moved to Medford and he was promoted to district forest ranger. He dressed as Smokey the Bear for many school programs. He and his family also owned and operated the Jolly Time popcorn wagon on Friday nights in downtown Medford. He retired in 1980.
He was a charter member of the Early Morning Splashers; charter member of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church; former member of Knights of Columbus and Medford Lions Club; and former board member of the Pine Line Rail Trail. He enjoyed swimming, bicycling, walking, and the outdoors.
In addition to his wife, survivors include five sons, Michael (Lisa), Brookfield, Joseph, Anchorage, Alaska, Eric (Mary), Okauchee, Tom (Diane), Niagara, and Victor (Cynthia), Minneapolis, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; and one great- grandson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Maria in 1979, one brother and three sisters.
Frank Lammar
Frank Lammar, 66, Stetsonville, died Tuesday, May 2 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Arrangements are pending with Hemer Funeral Home in Medford. A complete obituary will be published next week.
Joseph Kay
(1916-2000)
Joseph S. Kay, 83, Town of Medford, died Saturday, April 29 at Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 3 at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford with Deacon Joe Stefancin officiating. Burial took place at Medford Catholic Cemetery with graveside military rites. Pallbearers were Clark and Josh Kay, Geoffrey Hutchinson, Derek Lentz, Carlo Petersen, and Mike Karlen.
Joseph S. Kay was born on June 5, 1916 at Milwaukee to the late Joseph and Helen (Modrejewski) Kowaleski. He attended Milwaukee area schools.
He married Mary D. Dryzweicki, who died on September 17, 1994.
He entered the military in the 1930s. After his tour, he began employment with Central Wisconsin Trucking. He again joined the military and served as company clergy of the 184th Division in Milwaukee. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in WWII and the Korean War. In 1955, he retired from active duty and worked as a sheriff's deputy for the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department for two years. In 1957, he began employment as a security guard with AC General Motors in Oak Creek until retiring in 1978 and moving to Medford. He and his wife owned and operated the OK Bar on Main St. for one year, and he also wrote a fishing column for The Star News called "Drop a Line" until 1995.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and Medford Kiwanis Club; a former member of Klossner-Dietzler VFW and a former Golden Gloves boxer; and former city alderman and county board supervisor. He enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include four daughters, Jill (Dennis) Fyksen, West Allis, Jan Gust and Joan Sinisi, both of Medford, and Jeryle (David) Lentz, Wisconsin Rapids; two sons, Jack (Kris), Medford, and Jay (Monica), Wauwatosa; two sisters, Gennie Nash, Milwaukee, and Marcie Chamteau, Seal Beach, Calif.; two brothers, Ray (Jeannie) Koval, Milwaukee, and Louis Kowaleski, Sullivan; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by 17 brothers and sisters, and one granddaughter, Jennifer Peterson.
Ellyn Moeller
(1911-2000)
Ellyn S. Moeller, 88, died Wednesday, April 26 in Tulsa, Okla.
A private memorial service is planned. Cremainal interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Medford in July.
The former Ellyn Stephenson was born on July 16, 1911 at Medford to the late George and Hattie (Hein) Stephenson. She was a graduate of Madison General Hospital School of Nursing in Madison, and worked for several years as a registered nurse.
Her marriage to Therald Moeller, who preceded her in death, took place on May 17, 1935. They lived briefly in East Lansing, Mich. before moving to Champaign, Ill. in 1940, where they lived for 29 years. In 1969 they moved to Phoenix, Ariz., and then to Broken Arrow, Okla. in 1992.
She enjoyed gardening, oil painting, and sewing.
Survivors include her children, Karlyn Wagner, Roseburg, Ore., Kathryn (James) Krause, Tempe, Ariz., and Stephen (Cheryl), Broken Arrow; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ronald.
Memorials may be made to the Therald Moeller Chemistry Endowment Fund.
Bernard Krans
(1903-2000)
Bernard "Ben" Eric Krans, 96, Medford, died Wednesday, April 26 at Memorial Nursing Home in Medford.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 28 at First Baptist Church in Prentice, with Rev. Randy Feola and Rev. Bruce Anderson officiating. Interment took place at Hackett Cemetery in the Town of Hackett. Pallbearers were Paul Bergeson, Dan Swan, Dennis Upson, Duane Lind, and Randy and Loren Erickson.
Heindl Funeral Home of Prentice assisted the family with arrangements.
Bernard Krans was born on October 27, 1903 at the Town of Hackett to the late Bernard and Inga Christine (Erickson) Krans, who were Swedish immigrants. He attended Hackett Graded School. He then went to work on the family farm before taking a job at his brother's logging camps in the Glidden area. In 1939 he returned to the family farm which he operated with his sister, Mary, until his retirement. After retirement, he lived in Innver Grove Heights, Minn. for a period of time before returning to Prentice until ill health required him to move to Memorial Nursing Home.
He was actively involved in singing at churches and community affairs.
He is survived by nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
Theodore Zondlo
(1972-2000)
Theodore "Teddy" Foster Zondlo, 27, Marshfield, died Tuesday, May 2 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 5 at St. John's Catholic Church in Marshfield, with Rev. Charles D. Stoetzel officiating. Committal services will be held at Lake View Cemetery in Rib Lake.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, and on Friday until the time of service, at Rembs/Kudinger Funeral Home in Marshfield.
Theodore Zondlo was born on October 26, 1972 at Marshfield to Jeffery and Candace (Kieffer) Zondlo. He attended St. John's Parochial School and was a 1991 graduate of Columbus High School, both in Marshfield. He graduated in 1995 from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a bachelor of science degree. In 1996 he joined the Peace Corps and served in Poland until 1998.
His marriage to Izabela "Iza" Polomski, who survives, took place on September 2, 1998. He returned to Marshfield in 1999 and worked at Weyerhaeuser as a sales assistant until the time of his death.
He was a long distance runner and the Marshfield News Herald Scholar-Athlete in 1991. He also coached track at Stratford High School.
In addition to his parents and wife, survivors include one daughter, Victoria, Marshfield; one step-daughter, Kasia, Poland; maternal grandparents, William J. and Carol Kieffer, Appleton; and many aunts and uncles.
Lloyd Schubert
Former Medford resident Lloyd Schubert died Tuesday, May 2 at West Allis Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 5 at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford, with Rev. Warren Behling officiating. Burial will take place at Medford Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon until the time of service on Friday. Edward Scheuerell
(1917-2000)
Edward F. Scheuerell, 82, Mesa, Ariz., died Saturday, April 22.
Edward Scheuerell was born on September 12, 1917 at Sun Prairie. He attended Sun Prairie Grade School and High School, and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
His marriage to Florence Fleischmann, who survives, took place in 1941.
He taught industrial arts at Medford and coached basketball, football, and baseball. He served in the Navy as an Executive Officer on LST No. 697 in the Pacific Theater. In 1952 he started the National Guard in Medford and went to work at the Harvey Company, a window and door manufacturing company. He started 4-S Glass Company which later became Weather Shield Glass Division. Since retirement, he has spent winters in Mesa and summers in Medford.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Robert (Judy), Sartell, Minn., William (Ginny), Madison, and James (Maggie), Hartford; two daughters, Ann (Rob) Huggins, Palo Alto, Calif., and Mary Scheuerell, Minneapolis, Minn.; one brother, Leo, El Monte, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.
