Jean C. Wittek
(1923-2000)
Lublin native Jean C. Wittek, 76, Owen, died at her home on Wednesday, June 7.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 11 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Owen, with Rev. Al Jakubowski officiating. Burial took place in St. Stanislaus Cemetery at Lublin on Monday, June 12, with graveside services by Sister Mary Jo Donaldson. Serving as pallbearers were Gene Kaczmarczyk, Ron Latko, Mark Kaczmarek, Todd Kaczmarek, Joe Nowicki, Chad Cebula and Mike Cebula.
Maurina Funeral Home of Owen assisted the family with arrangements.
The former Jean Charlotte Kaczmarczyk was born November 28, 1923 at Lublin to the late Albert and Anna (Kozik) Kaczmarczyk. She graduated from Gilman High School.
Her marriage to Peter W. Wittek took place on January 30, 1948 at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lublin. They then farmed in the Town of Roosevelt until moving to rural Owen in 1969.
She assisted her husband with the B.R. Sawmill of Withee as vice president. She later was part owner of Camp 28 hotel and restaurant in Rib Lake. The couple enjoyed their winter months in Fountain Hills, Ariz. She was a bird watcher, cared for her flower gardens and especially liked picking blueberries.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Owen, the Parish Council of Catholic Women, and St. Helen's Circle.
Survivors include her husband, Peter of Owen; three daughters, Sandra (Mike) Cebula of Montello, Dianne of Lublin, and Pamela (Gary) Ackerman of Maple Grove, Minn.; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. Other survivors are: three brothers, Ray (Phyllis) of Eau Claire, Victor and Albert, both of Thorp; and a half-brother, Louis (Dorothy) Carpenter of Chetek.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Irene Krylowksi; three brothers, John, Frank and Joe; and one grandson, Peter Ackerman.

Inga Russell
(1908-2000)
Former Jump River resident Inga Russell, 91, Ladysmith, died Thursday, June 1 at Ladysmith Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 5 at United Methodist Church in Ladysmith. Burial took place at Mt. Nebo Cemetery in Jump River. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Gary Russell, Chuck Wachsmuth, Joe Dorava, and Ronald, Randall and Mike Sweet.
The former Inga Petersen was born on November 4, 1908 at Maywood, Neb. to the late Peter and Elise (Larsen) Petersen. They moved to the Jump River area in 1920.
Her marriage to Edwin Russell, who died in 1970, took place on November 22, 1925. She later married Elward Russell, who also preceded her in death. She worked several years in Wilmette and Winetka, Ill., retiring in 1970 and moving to Ladysmith.
Survivors include four daughters, Ethel Foster, Ladysmith, Rose (Harry) Sweet and Helen (Jim) Wachsmuth, both of Gilman, and Betty Mae (Elmer) Dorava, Irma; two sons, Ivan (Annette), Isanti, Minn., and Donald (Joan), Fridley, Minn.; 30 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two boys in infancy, seven brothers, two sisters, two granddaughters, two grandsons, and one great-great-grandson.

Pearle Sohr
(1921-2000)
Hannibal native Pearle Sohr, 78, Albany, Minn., died at her home on Monday, May 8. Funeral services were held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albany on May 11. Burial took place in the church cemetery.
Brenny Funeral Home of Albany assisted the family with arrangements.
The former Pearle White was born August 17, 1921 at Hannibal to Anna (Lewis) and the late George White. Her marriage to Vernon Sohr took place October 12, 1940 at Hannibal.
She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albany.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Judy Fischer of Albany; three sons, William of South Haven, Lawrence of Andover, and Barry of St. Paul; her mother, Anna of Albany; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Other survivors include two brothers, Clovis of Oklahoma and Raymond of Iowa.

Donald Fleischman
(1933-2000)
Medford native Donald Fleischman, 67, Wisconsin Rapids, died Monday, June 12 at his home.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 15 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids, with Rev. Andrew Karoblis officiating. Burial took place at Calvary Cemetery.
Ritchay Funeral Home of Wisconsin Rapids assisted the family with arrangements.
Donald Fleischman was born on January 10, 1933 at Medford to the late Anton and Anna (Gruny) Fleischman. He graduated from Medford High School in 1951 and then served in the US Army from 1951 to 1954 during the Korean War. He worked for the Department of Transportation for 30 years. He also owned and operated Michael's Cocktail Lounge in Wisconsin Rapids until retiring in 1987.
His marriage to Belle Brown, who died August 7, 1998, took place on July 29, 1988 at Wisconsin Rapids.
Survivors include seven children, Cheryl (Al) Clark, Betty Giese, Patti (Steve) Herman, Bonnie Lewis, Sharon (Mark) Ladick, Joseph Rebischke, and Mike (Linda) Fleischman, all of Wisconsin Rapids, and James (Jill) Rebischke, Rothschild; one sister, Audrey Carson, Medford; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Lori; two brothers, Ray and Thomas; and one grandson, Ethan.

Marion Ballerstein
(1921-1999)
Marion Elizabeth Ballerstein, 77, of Norway, Mich., died April 19 at Dickenson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, Mich. A memorial service was held April 24 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford, Mich., where she had been a member.
The former Marion E. Zahorek was born June 6, 1921, in Wausau to the late John and Elizabeth (Hoertsch) Zahorek. She lived in Prescott, Ariz., for a period of time prior to moving to Norway three and one-half years ago.
Survivors include a son, Tom (Shirley) Ballerstein of Dorchester; three daughters, JoAnn (Sheldon) Ellison of Vulcan, Mich., Linda (Frank) Anemone and Lois (Anthony) DeLaHuarte, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Harriet M. Berfield
(1913-1999)
Medford native Harriet Marie Berfield, 85, of Appleton, died Friday, April 30, at LindenGrove Health Care Center in Waukesha. A private memorial services was held at Larson Brothers Funeral Home in New Berlin.
The former Harriet Pleus was born October 2, 1913, in Medford to William and Mary Pleus. She was a graduate of Taylor County Normal School. Her marriage to William Berfield took place on June 27, 1936, in Stillwater, Minn. He died in December 1997.
She had been employed in library work at Rib Lake and the Appleton Public Library. She enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Solberg Lake and traveling with her husband in the United States and many foreign countries.
She was a member of the Beja Shrine women's Auxiliary.
Survivors include two daughters, Sybil (John) Woodruff of Waterford and Suzanne (Charles) Engbretson of Canyon Lake, Calif.; a sister, Marge (Lyle) Hoff of Stevens Point; two sisters-in-law, Helen Basile of Munster, Ill., and Inez Pleus of Sun Prairie; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Viola B. Gehrig
(1904-1999)
Former Medford resident Viola B. Gehrig, 95, of Milwaukee, died Thursday, April 29, at Bradley Beverly Health Care Center in Milwaukee where she had resided for more than six years. Funeral services were held Monday, May 3, at Community United Church of Christ in Medford with Rev. Robert L. Everhard officiating.
Burial was held in Medford Evergreen Cemetery. Her grandchildren served as pallbearers.
Hemer Funeral Home in Medford handled the arrangements.
The former Viola B. Strub was born January 25, 1904, in Merrill, Iowa, to the late Maximillion and Louise (Ross) Strub. She moved with her parents to South Dakota and attended schools in Big Stone City there. In 1917, they moved to the Whittlesey area and she attended Whittlesey schools. Her marriage to Ben C. Gehrig took place on September 26, 1923, in Medford. He preceded her in death on November 9, 1978.
She was employed as a clerk in various downtown businesses in Medford. She had also been a cook at the Northside Tavern. She moved to Milwaukee in 1990.
She was a member of Community United Church of Christ and the Womans Guild. She was also a member of the Klossner-Dietzler Ladies Auxiliary, a former GUG member and a charter member of the Chelsea Conservation Club.
Survivors include one daughter, Jeanette (Tony) Pascale of Brown Deer; one son, Mike (Marie) Gehrig of Rhinelander; a sister, Margaret Gehrig of Medford; a half sister, Genevieve Hollenbach of Tennessee; a half brother, John Willner of Indiana; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Germaine in 1927, and one son, Galen "Bud" Gehrig in 1992.
