Harvey Salter
Harvey A. Salter, 85, 310 Garden St. Eau Claire, died Tuesday, August 31, 1999, at M.B. Syverson Lutheran Home.
Harvey was born in Mina, South Dakota, September 17, 1913, the son of Frank and Lucy (Richmond) Salter. He graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School. He served in the Navy during World War II as a Hard Hat Diver and worked on many Navy salvage operations. He married Mabel E. Bandoli at First Baptist Church in Eau Claire, September 22, 1946. Harvey was employed at Uniroyal for 39 years, first in the shipping department and later in supervision.
Harvey was Eau Claire's oldest teenager. He loved sports. He was an avid golfer and had three holes in one, after he retired. He had traveled to Europe five times and played golf at St. Andrew's in Scotland, twice. Harvey and his wife, Mabel, had also enjoyed traveling to Alaska and Hawaii.
Harvey was a member of First Baptist Church in Eau Claire for 53 years. He also was a member of Eau Claire Lodge #112 F. & A.M. Harvey was President of the Roosevelt PTA in the 1950's. He was very active in the Eau Claire YMCA for many years. Harvey was also an active member of Pine Meadow Men's Golf League, until recently.
Survivors include his son, Steve Salter of Naperville, Ill.; his daughter, Karen Salter of Kenosha; five sisters-in-law, Marie Salter, Shirley Salter, Orlaine Salter, Ragna Price and Monica Bandoli, all of Eau Claire. He is further survived by numerous, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers, John, Dick, Bill and Elliott; and two sisters, Lillian and Vivian.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Eau Claire, with Pastor Arlo Little officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Eau Claire.
Friends and relatives may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Stokes & Mundt Funeral Chapel in Eau Claire and an hour before services at the church. Masonic services conducted by Eau Claire Lodge #112 F. & A.M. will be at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church in Eau Claire.

Ruth C. Bennett
Ruth C. Bennett, 92, now rests eternally with her Lord. A resident at Oak Gardens in Altoona since July of 1998, she died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999 at Luther Hospital.
Ruth was born Oct. 7, 1907, the daughter of John and Mary (Bauer) Fuller in Durand, Wis. She married Dove Bennett on June 12, 1935. They lived in the township of Seymour, Eau Claire County until 1993 when they moved into the city of Eau Claire. After the death of her husband, she moved into Oak Gardens in Altoona.
Survivors include two sons, Larry (Juanita) Bennett, Altoona, Wis. and D. Dale (Cheryl) Bennett of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; her brother-in-law, Edward Bennett and his wife Carol; her sister-in-law, Lillian Bennett, all of Eau Claire; two grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dove, in January 1997.
A service of celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 20, 1999 at First Baptist Church, 416 Niagara St., Eau Claire, Wis., with Reverend Dave Christner officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery in Eau Claire. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the Fuller-Speckien Funeral Home and one hour before the services on Monday at the church.

Helen M. Books
Helen M. Books, 97, peacefully passed away at her home on Saturday, December 18, 1999. She had fought valiantly to recover from a broken hip since April of this year.
Helen was born on April 21, 1902, the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Hall) Johnson in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. She lived her entire life with the exception of a few months on Eau Claire's north side. Helen recalled fond memories of growing up on the 1500 block of E. Madison Street with Norwegian, Swedish, and Irish Johnson. She and her four sisters were always proud of their Irish heritage.
Helen married Lester Books on September 3, 1932, in Minneapolis, Minn. He preceded her in death on December 21, 1979. She worked at home as secretary for the family business. Her great love was cooking and she looked forward to celebrations with family and friends. She was baptized at St. Edwards Chapel and was a life-long member of Christ Church Cathedral. Helen lived a long and happy life. She will be sadly missed.
Survivors include two sons, Lauren (Eileen) Books of Eau Claire and David Books of Helena, Montana; one daughter, JoAn (Ray) Anderson of Wilmette, Illinois; four grandchildren, Steven (Diane) Books, Thomas (Jill) Books, Lisa Books and Elizabeth Anderson; three great-grandchildren; Kendra, Logan and Hunter Books; nephew, Richard Jaentsch; and several other nieces and nephews.
Helen is also survived by her caregivers, Irene and Myrtle, whose dedicated care allowed her to remain in her home.
A service celebrating her life will be at 11 a.m. December 22, 1999, at Christ Church Cathedral, with The Very Reverend H. Scott Kirby officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Christ Church Cathedral or Northwest Wisconsin Home Care Hospice program.
Fuller-Speckien Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Clyde Best Sr.
Clyde Best Sr., 86, of Altoona, Wisconsin, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2000, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Clyde, son of Walter and Margaret Best, was born July 26, 1914, in Eau Claire County. He married his wife, Alnora, October 26, 1937, in the town of Washington.
Clyde is survived by his wife, Alnora of Altoona, Wisconsin; two sons, Clyde (Debbie) Best of Mondovi, Wisconsin and Walter Best, Saucier, Mississippi; one daughter, Eunice (Arthur) Peterson of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; a brother, Glenn (Ida Mae) of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; two sisters, Lilah (Gordon) Mueller of Eau Claire, Wisconsin and Betty(Sam) Villarreal of Waukesha, Wisconsin; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son; and four brothers.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2001, at Smith Funeral Chapel, with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 5, 2001, and one hour prior to services on Saturday. The Reverend Richard Goins will officiate. Interment will be in Rest Haven Gardens in Eau Claire.

Mary Jane Baker
Mary Jane Baker, 80, of 1611 Glades Dr., Altoona, died Nov. 28, 2000, at Dove Healthcare Nursing & Rehabilitation after a long illness.
Mary was born in Eau Claire on June 19, 1920, to Warren James and Elizabeth Ann (Patterson) Melville. She and LaMoine H. Baker were married Sept. 2, 1937. Mary worked several years at Samuelson's Department Store as a clerk. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Eau Claire, for over 50 years and served on many committees and belonged to various groups in the church.
Some of her hobbies included ceramics, art, reading, sewing and playing cards with family and friends. She was an avid letter writer and a loving mother who touched many lives. Her presence will be missed.
Mary is survived by her husband, LaMoine H. Baker; two sons and five daughters, Mary Ellen (Kolka) Moser (Glenn) of Wilmington, Del., Robert T. Baker (Sally) of Hallie, Joanne R. Ures of Eau Claire, John H. Baker (Wendy) of Eleva, Sue E. Moseley (Carl) of Roswell, Ga., Jane P. Gore (Charles) of Snellville, Ga., and Cynthia J. LaVelle (Daniel) of Eau Claire. Also surviving her are seventeen grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren; plus many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Tobias George Melville.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 416 Niagara St., Eau Claire, with Rev. David Christner and Rev. Richard Goins officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
Smith Funeral Chapel is serving the family.

Lowell K. Riley
Lowell K. Riley of Eau Claire died Tuesday, November 29, 2000, at Dove Healthcare Center in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Lowell was born on October 17, 1918, to Lester and Effie (Roll) Riley. He grew up on the family farm in Glen Flora, Wisconsin, and graduated from Tony High School. As a teenager, he became interested in ham radio and was very proud of his call letters, W9MEO. His interest in radio and knowledge of electronics led him to service in Chicago as a civilian in the Army Signal Corps, followed by several years as radio operator at Northwest Airlines. After 24 years as an electrician at Uniroyal, he retired in October, 1981. He married Adah Fear on August 27, 1949. He became the proud father of two daughters and one son.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Alvin.
He is survived by his wife, Adah; children, Barbara (Tom) Johnson of Menomonie, Wis., Lois Riley of Eau Claire, Wis., and Donald (JoAnn) Riley of Aurora, Missouri; one brother, Dale (Jo) Riley; five grandchildren, Brian and Matt Johnson, and Michael, Kevin and Janice Riley. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lowell was a faithful, active member of First Baptist Church of Eau Claire for 51 years.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 4, 2000, at First Baptist Church, with Pastor David Christner officiating. Burial will be private in Oak Grove Cemetery prior to the service on Monday.
Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 3, 2000, at Fuller-Speckien Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Eau Claire Amateur Radio Club, the Hospice Program of Northwest Wisconsin Homecare or any charity of the donor's choice.

Joann D. Mathews
Joann D. Mathews, 68, of Eau Claire died Monday, November 13, 2000, at her home.
Joann was born August 9, 1932, in Greenville, Miss., to Lee Luther and Caroline Elizabeth (Billingsley) Duke. She married Charles B. Mathews, Jr. on May 14, 1954, in Norfolk, Va. Charles B., Jr. died in 1994.
For the past 20 plus years, she worked as a bookkeeper for Parker Filter Division of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, formerly Eau Claire Filter and in customer service at Midelfort Clinic. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was active in many committees and activities. She volunteered at Sacred Heart Hospital Gift Shop, Triniteam, Community Table and other numerous volunteer work from 1995, until the present.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Barone of Eau Claire; three sons, Robert (Ramona) of Eau Claire, John (Mindy) of Grand Forks, North Dakota and Timothy (Tami) of Colfax; eight grandchildren, Judith (Tim) Maldonado, James Mathews, Jodi, Samantha and John Charles Mathews, Justin and Carmela Barone and Cody Kappus; two sisters, Roberta Stein of Memphis, Tenn., and Ruth Marie (Frank) Mehrhoff of Luling, La; sister-in-law, Edith (Robert) Sisco of Eau Claire; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles B., Jr.; one sister, Caroline Elizabeth Wagner; and three brothers, Lee L. Jr., John Harold and Lawrence.
Funeral services will be Saturday, November 18, 2000, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, with Rev. David Christner officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Gardens Cemetery, town of Washington.
Friends may call Friday, November 17, 2000, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Golden Funeral Home, 1405 N. Clairemont Ave.
