Helen M. Runkel, 73, of Centerville died at her home on Wednesday, March 29, 2000. She was born in Independence, Wis. to Paul and Sophie (Suchla) Woychik. She attended Independence High School. Helen married John Runkel on June 21, 1946. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Trempealeau. She retired from EMD in 1994.
Helen enjoyed knitting, crocheting, weaving and most recently enjoyed the internet for email to family and friends. Her love and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus helped her through many challenges.
Helen is survived by three daughters, Susan (Leander) Kulas, Carol Byrne, and Mary Burch; two sons, Daniel (Jackie) and Francis (Rhonda) Runkel; 15 grandchildren, Daniel Jr., Joseph, Christopher and Julie Runkel, Rose, Wayne, Paul and Mathew Kulas, Angie (Ahmed) and Mark Runkel, Rob, Shelly (Alseth) and Mary Byrne, Lauren and Kathleen Burch; and great-grandchildren, Samantha, Dominic and Victoria Kulas, Makayla Ahmed, and Danielle Alseth; one sister Marion Sendlebach, and three brothers, Roman, Paul Jr. and Donald Woychik.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Mary, 3 sisters, Clara Gierok, Dorothy Sosalla, Rita Schank and a brother Edmund Woychik.
Funeral services were Tuesday, April 4, 2000 at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Trempealeau. Fr. Robert Wagner officiated. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Trempealeau.

Viola E. Rutschow
Viola E. Rutschow, 83, of Ettrick, died Sunday, October 31, 1999 in Hi Park Nursing Home, Red Wing, Minn.
She was born April 9, 1916 in Buffalo County, Wis. to Carl and Lena (Hager) Jonas. On Sept. 18, 1935 she married Walter Otto Rutschow in Cream, Wis. He died June 24, 1995.
Viola was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Galesville and a past Order of the Eastern Star member.
Survivors are a son, William (Sandra) Rutschow of Ettrick;
2 daughters, Sonya (Daniel) McBride of St. Paul, Minn.; Betty Borseth of Red Wing, Minn.; 8 grandchildren, Kevin (Joleen), Kathy, Amy (Dean), Tanya (Jeff), Chad, Jesse, Leslie, Lori; a great-granddaughter, Madeline; and 2 very special, caring friends Ann and Julie.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson and a brother.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999 at First Presbyterian Church in Galesville. The Rev. Dr. R. Steven Krueger officiated. Burial was in Pine Cliff Cemetery, Galesville.

Douglas H. Sacia
Douglas H. Sacia, 78, of Galesville, died Wednesday, December 2, 1998 in Lakeview Health Center, West Salem, Wis. He was born April 1, 1920 in Galesville to Percy and Mary (Howard) Sacia. On September 9, 1941 he married Elizabeth "San" Ann Carlson in Trempealeau, Wis. Doug farmed in the Galesville area with his cousin Leon prior to retirement.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Galesville, where he was a past elder, a past member of the Galesville Curling Club and Trempealeau County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his devoted wife "San" of Galesville; a son James (Marlys) of St. Croix Falls, Wis; a daughter Judith (William) Montgomery of Boca Raton, Fl.; 5 grandchildren; 4 grt. grandchildren; and a sister Betty Wegmann of Brookfield, Wis.
Funeral services were Friday, December 4, 1998 at First Presbyterian Church in Galesville. The Rev. Dr. R. Steven Krueger officiated. Burial was in Pine Cliff Cemetery, Galesville.

Gerald L. Sacia
Gerald L. "Jerry" Sacia, 84, of North Bend, Wis. died Monday, March 13, 2000 in his home.
Gerald was born May 17, 1915 in Galesville, Wis. to Lee and Mildred (Parks) Sacia. On August 5, 1941 he married Katherine Buytaert in Loretto, Michigan. He was a lifetime farmer and a salesman for Midwest Bottle Gas for over 40 years.
He was a member of St. Kevin's Catholic Church, Melrose, WIs; a lifetime member of The Belgian Draft Horse Corporation and of the Draft Horse and Mule Association. Jerry served as superintendent of The Draft Horse Division of the Trempealeau County Fair for many years. Among his greatest joys were his family and Belgian Draft Horses.
Survivors are a daughter, Mary (William) Christen of Chandler, Ariz; 5 sons, Michael (Lois) of Melrose, Jim (Jenny) of Pecatonica, Ill., Tom (Lana), Dan (Carol), Tim (Mary) all of North Bend; 15 grandchildren; 3 grt. grandchildren; 2 foster children, Gene Taylor of Van Nuys Calif. and Joan Hallmark of Holmen, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine; 2 brothers, Wendell and Merle; and a foster son, Fred Lewis.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 18, 2000 in St. Kevin's Catholic Church, Melrose, with Fr. Thomas McInnis officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, North Bend. Friends may call at Zwickey Funeral Homes, Melrose Chapel on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Merlin 'Merle' C. Sacia
Merlin 'Merle' C. Sacia, age 81, of rural Kasota, MN died February 27, 1999 at the St. Peter Community Health Care Center.
Born: February 23, 1918 to Lee and Mildred (Park) Sacia near Galesville, Wis. He graduated from the Galesville High School and attended the University of Wisconsin School of Agriculture in Madison, Wis. During WWII he served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946 in the 9th Bomb Group stationed in the South Pacific.
He was employed in the L.P. gas business most of his life in sales and management. He was employed by Tru Gas, La Crosse, Wis., managed Northern Propane - St. Paul, Minn. and finally Minnesota Valley Gas, Mankato, Minn., overseeing the building of the plant on Hwy 14 East.
Merle married Deborah Scheid on September 22, 1979 in Winona, Minn. He was an avid horseman who enjoyed trail riding. He will be remembered for his kindness, love of fun and his wit.
Survived by: Wife Deborah; son Steve and wife Kathy Sacia of Laredo, Tex.; 2 daughters, Sue Kvittem and her friend Mark Cormak of Temperance, Mich., Emilee at home in Kasota; 1 grandson Chris and his wife Monica of Mesa, Ariz.; 4 brothers, Gerald of Melrose, Wis., Carroll and wife Wanda of Galesville, Otis and wife Judy of Trempealeau, Jack and wife Beverly of Diamond Bar, Calif; 2 sisters, Lorna and husband Wilbur Betz of Galesville, Leone and husband Don Smith of Medford, Wis.; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by: parents, 1 brother Wendell and his wife Bernice; sister-in-law Catherine Sacia.
Services were Wednesday, March 3, 1999, 1:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran Catholic Church in St. Peter. Spring burial in the Pine Cliff Cemetery in Galesville. Memorials preferred to St. Peter Catholic Church Building Fund or St. Peter Education Foundation.
Selmer S. Saeter
Selmer S. Saeter, 97, passed away at the Watkins Home in Winona, Minn. on April 9, 1999.
He was born in Galesville, Wis., on December 12, 1901 to Knute and Hilda (Gallup) Saeter.
Selmer graduated from Galesville High School, and Stout University, in Menomonie, Wis. He taught printing in Altanta, Ga., and Appleton, Wis., and later went on to other professions including his life-long interest in Naval Architecture, and gunsmithing. During World War II Selmer worked in the Manitowoc ship yards. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.
Selmer was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He married Margrethe Haugen on January 31, 1946 in Galesville, Wis.
Selmer is survived by his wife of 53 years, a son Krys (Lisa) Saeter of Seattle, Wash., a daughter Alisa (Fred) Petersen of Winona, Minn., a brother-in-law Chester (Virginia) Haugen of Osseo, Wis; grandchildren Eric, Brian Saeter, Tory Schultz, Lee, Christian Medema, Erin Petersen, several nieces and nephews and all his wonderful family of the Watkins home staff.
Selmer was preceded in death by 3 brothers and a sister.
A memorial service was held at the Watkins Home in Winona, Minn. on Tuesday, April 13, 1999. The Rev. Wade Davick officiated. Selmers body was cremated. Zwickey Funeral Homes, Galesville, assisted the family with arrangements.
Wilbert E. Selke
Wilbert E. Selke, 91, of Galesville, died Wednesday, June 23, 1999 in Bethany Riverside Nursing Home, La Crosse, Wis.
He was born June 23, 1908, in La Crescent, Minn. to William and Minnie (Huebner) Selke. On April 26, 1939 he married Elda E. Wehling in La Crosse. She died April 17, 1993. Before retiring, Wilbert farmed in the Galesville/Trempealeau area. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Galesville.
Survivors are 2 daughters - Esther Selke of Iola, Wis.; Evelyn (Brad) Sutton of Christopher, Ill; 8 grandchildren; several grt. grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Betty Krause of Waukesha, Wis; a sister Viola Allen of Madison, Wis. and a brother Edward (Mary) Selke of Columbus, Indiana.
Besides his wife he was preceded in death by 2 sons, and a brother.
Funeral services were Saturday, June 26, 1999 at Zion Lutheran Church in Galesville. Rev. Arnold Flater officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse.
