James Leavitt, 72, of Trempealeau, died Sunday, January 17, 1999 in St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
He was born November 3, 1926, in Trempealeau to Guy and Florence (Miller) Leavitt. On August 19, 1950 he married Josephine Jessessky. She died February 14, 1978. On September 25, 1982 he married Georgine Rothering Heinz in Trempealeau. Jim had worked as a dispatcher for Milwaukee Road Railroad before retiring. During WWII he served his country in the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church, Trempealeau, a charter member of Towner-Little Bear-Arnold V.F.W. Post #1915 of Trempealeau, Morris-Snuggerud American Legion Post #284 of Holmen, Wis., and Marynook Council Knights of Columbus.
Survivors are his wife, Georgine of Trempealeau;
2 sons, Michael (Sue) of Trempealeau, John (Karla) of Arcadia, Wis.; 3 daughters, Patricia (Paul) Swanson of Aurora, Ill., Mary Leavitt and Christine "Teenie" (Charles) Sonsalla, both of Trempealeau; 2 stepsons, Gregory (Judith) Heinz and Mark (Marilyn) Heinz, both of Trempealeau; 3 stepdaughters, Karen (Charles) Black of Trempealeau, Kaye (David) Benrud of Galesville, Karla (John) Leavitt of Arcadia; 4 grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild; and 2 brothers, John (Eleanor) Welch, Sr. and Lester "Pete" (Helen) Leavitt, both of Trempealeau. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by 2 sons, a step-grandson, and a brother.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 21, 1999 in St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church, Trempealeau, with Fr. Robert Wagner officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Trempealeau, with military rites.
Friends may call at Zwickey Funeral Homes, Galesville on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, from 6 to 9 p.m. with liturgical vigil at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary.
Joanne E. Lintelmann
Joanne E. Lintelmann, 60, of Galesville, died Saturday, April 10, 1999 after a long valiant struggle with cancer in her home. Joanne was born January 13, 1939 to Peter and Agnes (Erickson) Flaa in Bessemer, Mich.
On November 7, 1959 Joanne married Fred Lintelmann in Bessemer, Mich. They lived in many communities in Mich., Wis., Minn. and Ohio. They made many friends in all places.
Joanne was very active in church and school activities and also was a great hostess. "The greatest Mom."
She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her husband; 2 sons, Robert (Jennifer) Lintelmann of Bemidji, Minn., Dale Lintelmann of Johnson Creek, Wis.; 3 daughters Karen (Randy) Cacic of Portage, Wis., Diane Lintelmann, Marlene Lintelmann, both of Madison, Wis.; 3 grandchildren, Brian Cacic, Anna Lintelmann, Katherine Lintelmann; 2 brothers K. Robert (Luetta) Flaa of Marenisco, Mich. and Delbert (Kathy) Flaa of Caledonia, Ill.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 1999 at Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Galesville. Rev. Nathan Strutz will officiate. It was her wish to be cremated. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials.

Gordon A. Locke
Gordon A. Locke, 67, of Trempealeau, died Sunday,
August 29, 1999 in his home.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, 2 p.m. in Zwickey Funeral Homes, Galesville, Wis. with Fr. Robert Wagner officiating. Graveside services will be Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at 1 p.m. in Val Halla Memorial Gardens, Milwaukee, Wis.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until 2 p.m. Thursday with a masonic service at 1:45 p.m.
Ethel M. Lyon
Ethel M. Lyon, 81, of 19441 Eden Drive, Galesville, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999 in Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.
The former Ethel Mae Gibson was born on June 5, 1917 in Centerville, Wis. to Arthur A. and Clara L. (Carey) Gibson. A life-long resident of the Galesville area, Ethel attended the Maplewood Country School and, in 1934, graduated from Galesville High School. She also attended La Crosse State Teachers College.
Ethel married Herbert R. Lyon on August 24, 1941 in Centerville. The couple first lived on the Lyon family farm in the Town of Gale. On March 10, 1952 they moved to their own farm in the Town of Caledonia. Herbert Lyon died on December 27, 1987. In 1989, Ethel moved into the City of Galesville.
Ethel was a long-time teacher having first taught at the Beaches Corner Country School. She later taught kindergarten at the Ettrick Elementary School for many years.
Ethel was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Galesville, the United Presbyterian Women and the Delilah Circle, the Caledonia Ladies Aid, and the Trempealeau County Historical Society. She and her husband, Herb, also hosted many international students and had served as Volunteers In Mission at Sheldon Jackson College, Sitka, AK. Ethel also was a long time Sunday School teacher and 4-H leader, served as an elder of the First Presbyterian Church, served on the election board of the Town of Caledonia, served as a volunteer at the Galesville Elementary School, and assisted with juror selection for Trempealeau County.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Herbert C. (Carol) Lyon, of Moline, Ill; 2 daughters, Ruth (Charles) Buswell, of Black River Falls, and Sara (Donald) Christian, of St. Louis, MO: 7 grandchildren, Margot and Peter Lyon, Paula Buswell, Travis Swalve and Nadine (Bruce) Medlin, and James and Mark Christian; 2 great-grandchildren, Tyson Swalve and Kayla Medlin; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Ethel was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Swalve; a granddaughter, Andrea Swalve; 2 sisters, Ruth Gibson and Elizabeth Herried; and 2 brothers, William and Arthur Gibson.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 3, 1999, from the First Presbyterian Church, Galesville. The Rev. Dr. R. Steven Krueger officiated. Burial was in the Pine Cliff Cemetery, Galesville.
Casketbearers were Richard Meunier, James Accola, Wendall Hilton, Peter Becker, Charles Beck and William Walz.
Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church or the Galesville Public Library.

Verna L. Martinson
Verna L. Martinson, 77, of Galesville, Wis., died Tuesday, April 15, 1999, at Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center, in La Crosse, Wis.
Verna was born July 13, 1921, to Anton and Emma (Lebakken) Daffinson, in Galesville.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, in Galesville.
Verna is survived by a son, Vernon (Pat) Martinson, of Galesville; two daughters, Emmjean (Roger) Kaiser, of New Berlin, Wis., and Julie Stone, of French Island; a daughter-in-law, Betty Borseth, of Red Wing, Minn.; two sisters, Alice McCallum, of Galesville, and Tena Strouse, of New Baltimore, Mich.; ten grandchildren, Troy Kaiser, Jon Kaiser, Chad Borseth, Jesse Borseth, Tanya Borseth, Amy Bartels, Chris Martinson, Mark Martinson, Todd Martinson, Daniel Martin-son, Dawn Martinson, Bryan Pedretti, Tony Pedretti, and Jeff Pedretti; seven great-grandchildren, Jon, Jeremiah, Kyle, Travis, Madeline, Wade and Jackson.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Delwood and Joseph; a sister, Louise Hammer, and seven brothers, Lyle, Edwin, Emerald, Andrew, Ray, Victor and Einar Daffinson.
Funeral services were Monday, April 19, 1999, at Zion Lutheran Church, Galesville. The Rev. Arnold Flater officiated. Burial was in Pine Cliff Cemetery, Galesville.

Reid Handley Mayer
Reid Handley Mayer, infant son of Lisa (Handley) and Donald Lee Mayer, W22264 11th Street, Trempealeau, Wis., was stillborn on January 28, 2000.
Survivors include his parents; one brother, Noah Handley Mayer; maternal grandparents, Caroline and James Handley, St. Cloud, Minn; maternal great-grandfather, Peter Wiebe, St. Cloud; paternal grandparents, Evelyn and Dennis Mayer, Waterford, Penn.; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by seven great-grandparents.
Private family services were held on Monday, January 31, 2000 at the Trempealeau United Methodist Church,Tremp-ealeau. Officiating was Rev. Betsy Miller-Ruben.
Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home of Winona assisted the family with the arrangements.
Naomi C. McCutchen
Naomi C. McCutchen, 68, of Galesville, died Friday, January 21, 2000 in her home.
Naomi was born November 24, 1931 to Henry and Eva (Fero) Porath in Granton, Wis.
On June 17, 1950 Naomi married Gerald McCutchen in La Crosse, Wis. Naomi was a professional mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Galesville.
Naomi is survived by her husband Gerald; 3 sons, Wayne (Shari) McCutchen of Trempealeau, Randy (Laurie) McCutchen and Arden McCutchen, both of Galesville; 3 daughters, Jacquelin (Jon) Hess of Galesville, Sharon (William) Johnson of Trempealeau and Lisa (David) Betsinger of La Crosse; 15 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jason, Jolene, Troy, Travis, Jodi, Emily, Jared, Zackariah, Mary, Christine, Andrew, Natasha, Matthew and Michael; 3 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Brittany and Rylee; and one sister, Nancy (James) Johnson of Waukegon, Ill.; and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister-in-law.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 26, 2000 at Zion Lutheran Church, Galesville. Rev. Arnold Flater officiated.
