Bill Marvin
Word has been received of the death of Bill Marvin, 52, of Stillwater, Minn., who died Friday, May 7, 1999 in an auto accident in Phoenix, Ariz. A memorial service will be held from 4-7 p.m. with a service of remembrance and reflection at 7 p.m. at Wulff Family Services in Woodbury, Minn., on Friday, May 14.
Bill Marvin was an employee of 3M Company in St. Paul for 30 years. He married the former Deb Ludwig, who is the daughter of Martha Damm of Stetsonville and the late Ray Ludwig.
He is survived by his wife, Deb; a son, Robert of Chicago; a daughter, Tracey of Seattle; stepchildren, Logan and Kayli Sova, at home; and other relatives, friends and club brothers.

Emma B. Pelham
(1912-1999)
Rib Lake native Emma Bertha Pelham, 86, of Cassopolis, Mich., died Monday May 3, at Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac, Mich. There was no funeral or memorial service. The body was cremated.
Connelly Funeral Home in Cassopolis handled the arrangements.
The former Emma B. Sekadlo was born August 29, 1912, in Rib Lake to John and Bertha Kocar Sekadlo. She attended Rib Lake public schools. Her marriage to Hubert Pelham took place on April 19, 1941, in Dubuque, Iowa.
She and her husband lived in Medford for 23 years when he was a printer pressman at The Star News. She was a store clerk at the Rib Lake Lumber Company Store and other stores in Rib Lake and Medford. During World War II, she worked at the Golden Nugget Candy Factory in San Francisco, Calif. She ended her working years correlating printed material for the Cassopolis Vigilant. She enjoyed fishing and reading numerous newspapers.
Survivors include her husband, Hubert; a brother, Louis Sekadlo of Medford; a sister-in-law, Ellen K. Pelham of San Leandro, Calif.; nieces and nephews; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.

Bernice Smith
(1918-1999)
Bernice Ruth Smith, 80, of the Town of Hoard, died Saturday, May 8, at Memorial Hospital in Medford. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 11, at Maurina Funeral Home in Owen with Rev. Paul Petersen officiating.
Burial was held in Riverside Cemetery in Withee. Pallbearers were Rick, Tom, Randy, and Jerald Hamm, and Joel and Shaun Peterson.
The former Bernice R. Hamm was born November 1, 1918, in the Town of Hoard, rural Owen, to Fred and Elsie (Smith) Hamm. She received her education at the Hoard Center School and Owen High School. Her marriage to Milford W. Smith took place on June 11, 1949, in Greenwood. They later divorced.
After receiving her education, she moved to Chicago where she did domestic work. During World War II, she returned to Owen and was employed with Master Package. Following their marriage, she and her husband farmed in the Town of Hoard and later owned and operated a trucking business. She retired in 1977. She enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra (Robert) Peterson of Owen; one brother, Harold Hamm of Owen; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Duane in February 1968; and three brothers, Raymond, Robert and Harry Hamm.

Anna K. White
(1904-1999)
Anna K. White, 94, of Stetsonville, died Sunday, May 9, at Colonial Center Nursing Home in Colby where she had resided for one month.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 12, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford with Rev. Dennis Meulemans officiating.
Burial was held in Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford. Pallbearers were John Fleischmann, Dave Spencer, Pat Gazda, and Brian, Kurt and Steve Robida.
Visitation and a Rosary service were held at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford.
The former Anna K. Demerath was born August 26, 1904, in Medford to the late Peter and Barbara (Georg) Demerath. She attended Holy Rosary Parochial School and graduated from Medford High School and Taylor County Normal School. Her marriage to Richard G. White took place on July 9, 1935, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford. He preceded her in death on May 1, 1990.
She taught elementary education in rural Taylor County schools for many years. She later taught at Holy Rosary Catholic Church until her retirement. Her hobbies were knitting and crocheting.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and a former member of Our Ladies of Holy Rosary and of GUG Germania. She also had served as secretary of the Medford Catholic Knights for a number of years.
Survivors include a son, Grant (Cathy) White of Plover; three sisters, Barbara (Robert) Gauerke of Wausau, Betty (Tony) Fleischmann of Stetsonville and Nancy (James) Ortlieb of Dorchester; four sisters-in-law, Anna Paulson and Irene Stelzel, both of Stetsonville, and Beulah Metz and Verna White, both of Medford; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes White and Elizabeth Gallistel, and a brother, Edward Demerath.

Walter R. Abitz
(1906-1999)
Walter R. Abitz, 92, of the Town of Browning, died Saturday, May 15, at his home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 18, at St. Andrew Ev. Lutheran Church in the Town of Goodrich with Rev. Carl J. Busse officiating.
Burial was held in Medford Evergreen Cemetery II. Pallbearers were Peter and Willard Faber, Lyle Dahl, Emil Paur, Rudy Lemke, and Ken Nowak.
Hemer Funeral Home in Medford assisted the family with the arrangements.
Walter R. Abitz was born July 25, 1906, in Germany to Gustav Friedrich and Henrietta Louise (Hess) Abitz. He came to the United States with his parents as a youngster and settled on a farm in the Town of Browning. He received his education in schools there. On February 20, 1954, he married Herta Kruger in the Town of Goodrich.
He was employed in the lumber camps and worked in the grain fields of the western states. He then farmed in the Town of Browning. While farming, he was also employed in road construction, carpentry and for Widmer Construction at various times. He retired in 1978 and enjoyed gardening, woods work and carpentry.
He was a member of St. Andrew Ev. Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Gad Band in the 1930s and had played for dances held at Gad.
Survivors include his wife, Herta; a daughter, Ingrid (Donald) Purvis of the Town of Browning; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and four brothers.

Alice L. Karsten
(1913-1999)
Alice L. Karsten, 86, of Abbotsford, died Wednesday, May 12, at Continental Manor Nursing Home in Abbotsford where she had resided since August 1997. Funeral services were held Monday, May 17, at Christ Lutheran Church in Abbotsford with Rev. Paul C. Hunsicker officiating.
Burial was held in Abbotsford Public Cemetery. Pallbearers were Leonard and Mike Schindler, Tim Matson, and Ryan, Brandon and Sean Karsten.
Maurina Funeral Home in Abbotsford was in charge of the arrangements.
The former Alice L. Staffeil was born February 11, 1913, in Colby to the late William and Emma (Dins) Staffeil. She graduated from Colby High School and then attended Stevens Point Normal School. Her marriage to Harry Karsten took place on January 15, 1940, in Iowa. He died on June 4, 1975.
She and her husband farmed in the Town of Colby, rural Curtiss, until retiring. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening.
She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her children, Jean Miller and Ronald (Susan) Karsten, both of Curtiss; three sisters, Laura Schmidt, Aurilla Bowen and Leona (William) Koffarnus, all of Colby; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Roger Staffeil.

Herbert Kelnhofer
(1930-1999)
Herbert A. Kelnhofer, 68, of Wisconsin Rapids, died May 9 at his residence. Funeral services were held May 12 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids with Rev. John Hogan officiating.
Entombment took place in Forest Hill Mausoleum with military rites by Hagerstrom Rude Young Clark American Legion Post 9. Pallbearers were Tom Kelnhofer, Drew Hamel, Don Mancl, Randy Kubisiak, Dennis Schultz, and Dan Steckbauer.
Visitation and a wake service were held at Taylor Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids.
Herbert A. Kelnhofer was born October 8, 1930, in Blenker to Frank and Margaret (Tauschek) Kelnhofer. He married Marjorie Dunkel on October 21, 1952, in Blenker.
In his early years, he was employed by Biron Cranberry Company. He then served in the Wisconsin National Guard. In 1953, he joined the US Army and served until February 1955. He then worked as a turbine operator for Consolidated Papers Inc. until retiring in 1994. He was an avid Packers fan and enjoyed his motorcycle, woodworking and baseball.
He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and of the Catholic Knights.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; three daughters, Cindy Hamel of Nekoosa, Kim (Randy) Kubisiak of Wisconsin Rapids and Kay (Dennis) Schultz of Spencer; a son, Tom Kelnhofer of Oshkosh; one brother, James (Charlene) Kelnhofer of Richardson, Texas; two sisters, Marie (George S.) Lang of Arpin and Margaret Mancl of Marshfield; two stepsisters, Lillian Winkles of Riceville, Iowa, and Mary Ashbeck of Wisconsin Rapids; two sisters-in-law, Mae Kelnhofer of Wisconsin Rapids and Rachel Kelnhofer of San Antonio, Texas; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents; his stepmother, Theresa (Rickl) Kelnhofer; two brothers, George F. and Michael; and one sister, Sister M. Theresette "Anna" Kelnhofer.
