He wedded Beverly Jean Grandeffo March 16, 1957, at Second Congregational Church in Beloit. He was a 1949 graduate of Beloit High School and graduated from Beloit College in 1959 with a B.A. in Government and Economics. A Korean War veteran, he served in the U.S. Air Force from Feb. 1, 1950, to Jan. 6, 1954. Prior to his active military service he was a member of Company L, 3rd Battalion, 128th Infantry regiment, 32nd "Red Arrow" Division of the Wisconsin National Guard in 1949 and 1950.
While attending college he was in business with his father in the Pure Oil Gas Station in Clinton, WI (1956-59). Following his graduation from college he worked for Sundstrand Aviation and J. I. Case of Rockford, IL, and then Chrome Corporation of America in Elgin, IL.
He taught in the Beloit school system for many years, first at Aldrich Junior High School from 1961-67, and at Beloit Memorial High School from 1969-78; he is fondly remembered by many former students as a no-nonsense teacher with a deep love of learning. At the high school he was an assistant track coach for distance runners and head cross-country coach. Don was active in various teacher's organizations: The Board of Directors of the Teachers Credit Union; the Beloit Education Association, in which he served on a number of different committees and was twice elected to the position of President; and he served as the Economic Coordinator on the Wisconsin Council for Economic Education, representing the Beloit Public Schools during the mid-1970s.
For many summers he ran a seasonal retail/wholesale fireworks business with fellow teacher, Larry Heckle, involving everyone in their immediate families; it was a continuation of a business started in the 1940s by his father-in-law, Gasper Grandeffo. Don also sold life and health insurance in Beloit in the late 1960s with Mike Crowley of Provident Mutual, earning the Gold Medallion Award for outstanding sales in 1968.
Don left teaching to become a salesman with Badgerland Harvestore of Edgerton, selling A.O. Smith Harvestore products to many Livestock farmers in the Rock County area. His next employment was with Wisconsin Job Service in job placement, directing the first Dislocated Workers Program in Wisconsin. He continued helping workers in a position at the Placement Office of Blackhawk Technical College.
The last ten years of Don's work career were spent as the Rock County Veteran Service Officer. He said that all his previous work experience seemed to prepare him for this particular job, and he was known as a passionate advocate for veterans' issues. He was very active at all levels and in all aspects of the various CVSO associations. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Association County Veteran Service Commissioners; County Veterans Service Officers Association of Wisconsin, where he served nine years on the Executive Committee, and as President; and Southeast Wisconsin Association of CVSOs, three years as President. Don was appointed to serve on the Wisconsin Veterans Museum Foundation Board in its initial year of operation (1991-92). He served his veterans as an Accredited Representative of the Wisconsin Department of Veteran Affairs, the United States Department of Veteran Affairs and the Vietnam Veterans of America. Don was instrumental in negotiating an increase in the dollar grant to the counties for the Veterans Office in 1997.
Don's involvement with veterans included membership in a number of organizations: American Legion Post 209, VFW Post 1621, associate member of VVA Chapter 236, Military Order of the Cooties #9, life member of the Red Arrow Club of Southern Wisconsin, life member of the Brotherhood Rally of All Veterans Organization, Veterans Education Committee, Inc. of Wisconsin, the Air Force Association, the Korean War Veterans Association, Inc., and the United States Air Force Security Service/Electronic Surveillance Command Alumni Association. He retired from the Veterans Service Office April 4, 1997.
He was an active member of Second Congregational and Gridley Congregational Churches in Beloit, serving as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent of Sunday School, Deacon, Trustee, and most recently Moderator of Second Congregational until health concerns forced him to step down. In addition to his involvement with the local churches, he also served as Moderator-Elect and Moderator of the Wisconsin Association of Congregational Churches in 1991 and 1992, and was a member of the Executive Committee until 1998.
Always a great lover of history, he was a member of the Beloit Historical Society, Rock County Historical Society, Rock County Genealogical Society, Wisconsin Historical Society, and Friends of Beckman Mill. He was also a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, the International Crane Foundation, AARP, and a lifelong Republican, as were his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Don found his greatest pleasure and personal satisfaction in working directly with people and helping them in any way he could. A great lover of books, he accumulated a large library that reflected his many interests. In later years he developed an interest in modeling and craft woodworking, and spent many enjoyable hours in his shop. He and Bev greatly enjoyed traveling, especially to out-of-the-way places and on the back roads of Wisconsin and Illinois.
He will be remembered for the great love he had for his family and friends.
Don is survived by his wife of 45 years, Beverly; 4 sons: Scott (Jean) of Beloit, Martin of Washington, DC, Matthew (Susie) of Mt. Horeb, and Andrew (Karen) of McGregor, IA; and their children, Robert and Marissa; a sister, Marcene (Lee) Seitz of Phoenix, AZ; his mother-in-law, Loraine Grandeffo of Beloit; a brother-in-law, David (Marilyn) Grandeffo; step-grandchildren, Shannon DeVoe and Rachel Wilfahrt; several nieces; and a nephew.
