Griep, Katherine L.
September 4, 1909 - July 18, 2002
JANESVILLE/MILTON -- Katherine L. Griep, age 92, a former longtime Milton resident, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 18, 2002, at Rock Haven, where she had resided the past 3 years. She was born Sept. 4, 1909, in Janesville, the daughter of the late John B. and Katherine C. (Lee) Kauffman. She attended school in Janesville, and was a graduate of Janesville High School. She then went to St. Mary's School of Nursing in Milwaukee, WI, and graduated as a registered nurse. She returned to Janesville, and worked for over 40 years at Mercy Hospital until her retirement. She married Edward J. Griep in Sept., 1933; he preceded her in death on March 5, 1993. Katherine was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Milton, and was an active volunteer for church activities. She was a member of the 3rd Order of St. Francis. Most of all, her family was the joy of her life!
She is survived by her 3 children: Edward L. (Judy) Griep of Destin, FL, Robert J. (Delores) Griep of Janesville, and Rose (David) Bartz of Three Forks, MT; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by 4 brothers: Basil Kauffman, Don Kauffman, Robert Kauffman, and James Kauffman; and 4 sisters: Marion Wietlspach, Eleanor Dewey, Jean Schachtschneider, and Ellen Tropp.
Funeral services with a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Mon., July 22, 2002, at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 837 Parkview Dr., Milton, with her nephew, Fr. Niles Kauffman, and Msgr. James Uppena concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church. The WHITCOMB-LYNCH-OVERTON FUNERAL HOME of Janesville is assisting her family with arrangements.

Hanna, James
Aug. 8, 1926 - July 6, 2002
DELAVAN -- James Hanna, age 75, of W7955 E19 Creek Rd., died Sat., July 6, 2002, at Stone Ridge Care Center, Delavan. He was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Long Island, NY, the son of Charles and Bella (Neil) Hanna. He was employed as a bartender for 30 years. He was a member of Fellowship of Christian Believers in Williams Bay.
He is survived by his niece, Margurette Hill of Lancaster, PA.
Burial will take place at 1 p.m. Tues., July 9, 2002, in Spring Grove Cemetery, Delavan. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Fellowship of Christian Believers in Williams Bay, with Rev. Ed Bartz officiating. MONROE FUNERAL HOME, Delavan, is assisting the family.

Gilbert R. "Gib" Hanson
"Leader of the Band"
July 29, 1911 - July 11, 2002
JANESVILLE -- Gilbert R. "Gib" Hanson, age 90, of 2415 Mt. Zion Ave., passed beyond our present sight to live forevermore in God's Eternal Light on Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Mercy Hospital. He was born on July 29, 1911, in Blanchardville, WI, the son of Hjalmer and Rose (Watkins) Hanson. Gib married Violet M. Kotwitz on Jan. 18, 1941, in Dubuque, IA. She preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 1984. He was a baker for over 45 years for Pregont's, Cunningham's and later for Woodman's Food Market. Gib was a man of many talents and had played guitar with the group, "Rhythm Masters."
He is survived by his 7 children: Gil Hanson, Gar (Candy Keating) Hanson, Lance (Liz) Hanson, Rochelle (Mel) Walker, LaVonne Streuly, Marilyn (Terry) Dutcher and Annette (Joe) Hyams, all of Janesville; 16 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Hazel (Bob) Gould of Darlington and Darlene (Dick) Messner of Janesville; and a brother, Alton (Lil) Arneson of Janesville. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Val; a son-in-law, Dean; great-grandchildren, Austin and Autumn; 2 brothers, Sherm Arneson and Victor "Pete" Hanson; and a sister, Lila Buehl.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Mon., July 15, 2002, in ST. JOHN LUTHERAN CHURCH with Rev. Brian Rossow officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME on Sunday from 1 until 3 p.m.
"Dad, you were a loving father and grandfather. A gentle, kind and unassuming man with a deep inner wisdom. You had a mischievous sense of humor which endeared you to all. Your deep spiritual faith gave you the courage to endure many hardships. Your guiding light will shine forever."

Harris, Beryle Dale
March 20, 1920 - July 26, 2002
JANESVILLE/CORNELIUS, NC -- Beryle Dale Harris, age 82, of Janesville and formerly of Cornelius, NC, died Fri., July 26, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Janesville. He was born on March 20, 1920, in Rockford, IL. He was the son of Fred and Aylee Harris. He married Marion Bjork on Oct. 14, 1945, in Wisconsin Dells. Dale, as he liked to be called, worked at JATCO for 32 years, retiring in 1982. Dale led a full and active life until the day the Lord called him home. He was a Golden Gloves boxer in his youth. He loved to fish and golf and became a tournament pool player after moving to North Carolina in 1996. Dale and Marion returned to Janesville in December of 2001. He was a beloved husband and a kind and loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. His sense of humor, the twinkle in his eyes and his endearing smile will be remembered and missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Marion; 6 children: Jack (Karen) Harris of Janesville, Bonnie Smith of Charlotte, NC, Cynthia Harris of Janesville, Dave (Carol) Maxwell of Shelton, WA, Gary (Mickie) Harris of Kent, WA, and Jerry (Delores) Harris of Maple Valley, WA; 6 grandchildren: Michael (Marnie) Harris of Janesville, Scott (Tiffany) Smith of Charlotte, NC, Marcus (Cassi) Smith of Charlotte, NC, David Smith of Charlotte, NC, Anna Lisa Smith of Charlotte, NC, and Jeff (Lani) Harris of Sumner, WA; 5 great-grandchildren: Jens, Ian and Cole Harris of Janesville, Graham and Grace Smith of Charlotte, NC; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers; and a grandson, Bruton Cameron Smith.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tues., July 30, 2002, at WESTSIDE BAPTIST CHURCH, Janesville, WI, with Rev. Bob Logan officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME and on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at Westside Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the Westside Baptist Church.

Holtz, Helen M.
August 31, 1915 - July 17, 2002
ELKHORN, WI -- Helen M. Holtz, age 86, of Hazel Ridge Rd., Elkhorn, died Wed., July 17, 2002, at the Aurora Lakeland Medical Center, Elkhorn. She was born Aug. 31, 1915, in Algonquin, IL, the daughter of Charles and Minnie Dammyer. She married William A. Holtz May 22, 1938, in Algonquin; he preceded her in death June 29, 1998. Helen was a member of the Elkhorn First Evangelical Lutheran Church and a former member of the Walworth County Farm Bureau & Walworth County Holstein Association.
She is survived by a son, William C. Holtz of Elkhorn. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Edwin and Charles; a sister, Irma; and her parents.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Sat., July 20, 2002, at the FIRST EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, Elkhorn, with Rev. Kurt Grunewald officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 until 8 p.m. at BETTS FUNERAL HOME, Elkhorn, and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Burial will be in the McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock, IL. Memorials may be made to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church or V.N.A. Hospice.

Isbell, Louise
January 3, 1924 - July 22, 2002
WHITEWATER -- Louise Isbell, age 78, passed away at Menomonee Falls Community Hospital Mon., July 22, 2002. She was born Jan. 3, 1924, in Elberfeldt, Germany, the daughter of Johann and Emmy Butgereit. They moved to the United States in 1929, settling in St. Charles, IL. She was united in marriage to Lester Isbell May 11, 1946, in St. Charles, IL. They moved to Whitewater in 1947, where they managed the Red Hen Inn for 14 years. She also worked at Whitewater Electronics as a supervisor, retiring to spend her time caring for her aging parents. Louise was a very active member of First English Lutheran Church, serving as a volunteer at the Thrift Shoppe for over 28 years, as the church historian for the past 16 years, and in many other church organizations.
She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl (Jay) Ostlie of Littleton, CO; a son, Michael (Marilyn) Isbell of Pewaukee, WI; 3 grandchildren: Christopher, Jennifer, and Erin Valentine; a brother, Carl (Carol) Butgereit of Cherubusco, IN; nieces, nephews, sisters, and brothers-in-law, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband in 1991 and her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Fri., July 26, 2002, at FIRST ENGLISH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 401 W. Main St., Whitewater. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church. Memorials may be made to the church. SKINDINGSRUDE FUNERAL HOME of Whitewater is assisting the family.

Jahnke, Eva Mae
January 3, 1906 - July 13, 2002
FT. ATKINSON -- Eva Mae Jahnke, age 96, died July 13, 2002, at Skaalen Home. She was born on Jan. 3, 1906, in Milton, the daughter of Bert and Alice (Lyke) Guernsey. Mae graduated from Milton Union High School in 1924. She attended Rock County Rural Normal School in Janesville and received a B.S. in Education from Whitewater State Teachers College in 1933. She married Herbert August Jahnke on Aug. 13, 1940; he preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 1972. She was a teacher for 29 years, teaching in Dane, Rock, and Jefferson Counties. She retired from East Elementary School, Jefferson, in 1971. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ft. Atkinson, the St. Paul's Ladies Aid, Over 60 Club, Birthday Club, and the Homemakers' Auxiliary. She was a charter member and officer of both the local AARP and Jefferson County Retired Teacher's Association, and belonged to the State and National Education Associations. For many years she was a member of and worked as a volunteer for the Health Care Auxiliary, Daily Bread, and the Fort Atkinson Senior Center.
Surviving are a son, Richard (friend, Kathy Lewinski) Jahnke of Madison; sisters-in-law, Fern Jahnke of Ft. Atkinson and Bernadette Guernsey of Edgerton; a brother-in-law, Gus Klatt of Ft. Atkinson; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sisters, Pearl Jones and Arlene Klatt; and her brothers, Harley and Stuart.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wed., July 17, 2002, at NITARDY FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, Ft. Atkinson, with Rev. Paul Scharrer officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.
