Lilah E. Anderson, age 87, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, July 6, 2000. Her death came following a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) over the past few years. She was born on June 8, 1913, on the family farm in Galesville, Wisconsin, to Lorentz and Emma (Alme) Oines. Lilah graduated from Gale College in 1931, and graduated from Columbia School of Nursing,
Milwaukee, in 1934 and earned her registered nursing certificate. She was married to Herbert A. Anderson on her birthday, June 8, 1940 and they celebrated 60 years of marriage. Together, they lived in Middleton most of their lives. Lilah was active in her nursing career until retiring in 1979, having worked at Madison General Hospital, Private Duty Nursing, Kiddie Kamp and Oakwood Lutheran Home. She was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church until her illness, serving on multitudes of committees and always eager to help others in her church and community with love and compassion. Lilah loved her family and felt great joy with each new addition over the recent years. In addition to her husband, Herbert, survivors include her daughter, Mary (James) Shipley of Middleton; two grandchildren, Julie (Jeff) North of Houston, Texas, and Derek (Channing) Shipley of Lynchburg, Virginia; two new great-grandsons, Zachery Shipley and Jacob North; a
sister, Lillian Worch of Madison; and a legacy of family and friends to all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Leonard. Life celebration services were held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Middleton on Saturday, July 8, 2000. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, ALS Foundation, HospiceCare Inc. of Madison or to the charity of the donor's choice. The family thanks their friends, church family, medical team and HospiceCare Inc. of Madison for the expert, loving care Lilah received.

William Frederick Baumgartner
William Frederick Baumgartner, age 93 of Owatonna, MN, formally of Adams, WI died Wednesday, March 19, 2003.
Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 28th at the A-F V.F.W. Legion Post, Adams, WI. Burial will be at Mt. Repose Cemetery. Military rites will be offered by the Adams VFW Post #6279; the Adams American Legion Red Cloud Post #250; and the Grand Marsh American Legion Snyder-Richardson Post #273.
William was born on September 25, 1909 to Louis and Mary (Schafer) Baumgartner in Shennington, WI. He attended school at Adams-Friendship and then spent one year at University of Wisconsin. William served over two years in WWII with the second Marine Corps. He married Leona Elizabeth Young on February 1, 1936 in Adams, WI. William was a painter and decorator for 42 years, retiring in 1971. After his retirement he was most interested in golfing and working on the course.
William was a member of the Adams-Friendship V.F.W. Post #6279, Adams American Legion Red Cloud Post #250, and Mound View Golf Club charter member #11.
William was preceded in death by his wife (Leona); parents; eight brothers; five sisters.

LIBBY SVEHLA
LIBBY SVEHLA, age 91, of Friendship, of Wisconsin died Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at the Adams County Memorial Hospital in Friendship, WI.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Friday, March 14, 2003 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adams, Wisconsin. The Rev. John Krebs will officiate. Interment will be in the Mt Repose Cemetery, Friendship, Wisconsin.
Libby was born on December 27, 1911 to Joseph and Albina (Veverka) Svehla in Fifield, Wisconsin. Libby was the oldest of 8 children (3 boys and 5 girls). Libby was raised on the family farm, raising pigs, cows, horses, and crops. She lived on the farm with her family until 1940. Libby moved to Arkdale, WI where she lived and worked for the late Adolph and Ernestine Martin on their farm. In 1948, Libby moved to to live and work for the late John and Matie Davidson on their farm, also in Arkdale. Libby next worked for Albert and the late Ramona Davidson of Adams, who at that time owned the Adams Theatre and Upholstery Shop.
Libby retired in 1983 and moved to Adams Village where she lived until recently.Libby enjoyed many of the simplier things in life. She enjoyed playing the piano (since the age of 17), watching television, visiting with people, going out for lunch or for coffee and pie. Libby also enjoyed reading her Bible, going to church at Immanuel Lutheran Church, and attending various church functions.
Libby was preceeded in death by her parents; all of her sisters (Dagmar, Mae, Zora, and Olga) and two brothers (Jeny and John).
Libby is survived by a brother, Connie of Mt. Enterprise, TX; she is further survived by many nieces, nephews, friends.

Otto James Shipla, Ph.D.
Otto James Shipla, Ph.D., age 82, of Terre Haute, Indiana died at February 28th, 2003.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 10th, 2003 at Roseberry’s Funeral Home & Crematory in Friendship. Interment at the Fordam Cemetery. Military rites will be offered by the Adams VFW Post #6279; the Adams American Legion Red Cloud Post #250; and the Grand Marsh American Legion Snyder-Richardson Post #273.
He was an Emeritus Professor of Education at Indiana State University. He was born in Chicago, Illinois May 1, 1920 to James Shipla, Jr. and Marie Ulkova Shipla. His mother passed away in his infancy and he was brought up by his paternal grandparents on a farm in Adams County, Wisconsin where he lived until adulthood and still visited frequently until his death. Survivors include one uncle, William Shipla, on the family farm in Adams County, Wisconsin; Lillian Krakora, aunt of Adams, Wisconsin. Emma Janda, aunt, of Cicero, Illinois; Mary Ann Huber, cousin, of Washington, Louisiana and her children Jennifer, Aimee, Katy, Nathan Huber; Nancy and William Haight, cousins of Madison, Wisconsin and their children William IV, Vicky, Ginny. A cousin Robert (and Ruth) of Kokomo, Indiana and their 3 sons. Also, Marenka Kabatova, her husband and son, and Andrea Horakova, cousins of Prague, Czech Republic. Left to mourn are also many friends, ex-colleagues, and former students in Thailand, Philippines, Laotians in Australia, former students in Indiana and Wisconsin, and military friends in various states in the U.S.A. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, many aunts, uncles, cousins, mostly in Adams County and Chicago, as well as many close military friends.
He received his Elementary Education n a one-room school, Fordham School, and his Secondary Education at Adams-Friendship High School, both in Adams County, Wisconsin. (He was class Salutatorian at both levels.) He received a 2-year rural teaching diploma from Central State Teachers College, Stevens Point, Wisconsin, a Bachelors, a Masters, and Doctor of Philosophy Degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. He taught at the Elementary level in one-room schools in Adams County, Wisconsin, in Pewaukee, Wisconsin, and in Dolton, Illinois, and at the college level at Door-Kewaunee County College, Algoma, Wisconsin and State College-La Crosse, and 30 years at Indiana State University and 2 years at Dong Dok College, Sisavongoong University in Vientiane, Laos under Fulbright grants. He spent 2 years working with Thai college teachers in 36 colleges in Thailand under UNESCO, plus many years of working with college teachers in various parts of Thailand especially, Sakon Nakorn Province. He conducted workshops on teaching in Mindanao and Central Luzon, Philippines. He has traveled on six continents and especially made multiple trips to SE Asia. He was a veteran of WWII, spent 3 years overseas with the famous single Battalion, 62~ Armored Field Artillery, in Tunisia and Sicily and Western Europe. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and a Special Unit Citation. Since 1961 he has been active in the 62’~ Armored FA Battalion Alumni Association. He was a member of American Legion China Post #1, presently based in Houston, Texas, whose membership is mostly composed of Viet Nam War veterans, some whom he associated during his work in Laos.
He was a member of many professional Education organizations for more than 40 years: The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, state and national (on national board for 3 years). The Association of Teacher Educators, state and national; The Comparative and International Education Society; The Association for Childhood Education International. He was recently honored for 50 years as a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the national Education Fraternity. Up until 1973 he was a member of Indiana State Teachers Association. He was a life member of the Fulbright Association, also the Indiana Fulbright Association. He was a member of the Adams-Friendship High School Alumni Association (which with 4 classmates he helped organize for the first time in 1938 and which had been successfully existing ever since). Others: The University of Wisconsin Alumni Association - Madison, Wisconsin, The University of Wisconsin Alumni Association - Stevens Point; Wisconsin. The Adams County, Wisconsin Historical Society. He wrote and published countless professional Education articles, mainly on student teaching and Elementary Education. Thirty-five Papers on Teaching were translated into Thai language and published in Thailand. He wrote and published the first student-teaching handbook in Laos in Pre-Communist days, and was co-editor of student - teaching handbooks at Indiana State University for 25 years. He recently published two books: A Variety of Modern Tales of Thailand and One - Room School Days, leaving unpublished manuscripts on Teaching in Laos and Children’s Stories of Thailand. Over the years he delivered dozens of lectures on teaching to schools and colleges in SE Asia, and on various parts of the world and schools of foreign countries and to schools and church and civic groups in Indiana. He organized the first course in Comparative Education at Indiana State University with Professor Cheft Williams and organized the first Lao-English student - teaching program for training junior high student teachers in most major cities of Laos. Among his professional honors was a Distinguished Award of the Vincennes Community Schools, Vincennes, Indiana presented by School Administrators and a plaque from Lao-Filipino College, a school in Laos during the Vietnam War days. He was considered an authority on student teaching in SE Asia, also in Indiana. At the college level he taught many Education courses at various times, especially curriculum. He was a supervisor of student teachers for all his 30 years at Indiana State University and Director of Elementary Student Teachers for 3 years. He was on countless college committees, helped plan many conferences on student teaching, on Committees of Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development nationally. He was well-known by educators all over Thailand and hundreds of Indiana and Wisconsin former students in pre-service education owed a great deal of their success to his teaching and counseling. Funeral services will be conducted at Roseberry Funeral Home, Friendship, Wisconsin.

CURTIS RICHARD ERDMANN, age 73, of Adams, of Wisconsin died Friday, March 7, 2003 at the St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, WI.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Adams, Wisconsin. The Father Daniel Kelly will officiate. Interment will be in the St. Leo's Cemetery, Friendship, Wisconsin. Military rites will be offered by the Adams VFW Post #6279; the Adams American Legion Red Cloud Post #250; and the Grand Marsh American Legion Snyder-Richardson Post #273.
Curt was born on April 4, 1929 in Watertown, Wisconsin the son of Fredrick W. and Flora Erdmann. He was one of set of triplets. A veteran of the Korean War - he and his brothers joined the Army Air Corps at age 17. Curt worked on a crew of B-29 Bomber, serving with distinction for 6 years.
Curt worked as welder at the Heavy Duty Company in Watertown, WI until 1966. That year he moved to Friendship and began working for "Big Joes" in Wisconsin Dells where he become plant manager. Curt retired in 1980.
Curt was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Adams and St. Anne's Catholic Church in Brooks. He was a member and a twice post commander of the Adams VFW Post #6279. Curt was also the commander of the firing squad for the VFW. Curt enjoyed golfing, fishing in Hayward with his family, woodworking, and the Friday morning coffee with his buddies.
Curt was preceded in death by his parents; wife (Mildred); brothers (Louis and James).

ELMA ANN LEITENBERGER, age 61 of Coloma, Wisconsin died Thursday, March 6, 2003 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield following a battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am. Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at the New Life Assembly of God Church in Plainfield, Wisconsin. Pastor Gary Shanahan will officiate. Interment will be in the Hancock Cemetery, Hancock, Wisconsin.
Elma was born in Milwaukee on November 18, 1941 the daughter of Dairel and Gertie (Mattox) Droste. She married Michael Leitenberger on May 14, 1960 in Dubuque, Iowa. Elma and her family moved to Adams County in 1977. Elma enjoyed gardening, watching birds, playing games , puzzsles, being with her family and fishing.
Elma was preceded in death by her parents, (Dairel and Gertie Droste) and brother-in-law, (William Ahlborn)
Elma is survived by her Husband: Michael Leitenberger, Coloma; Daughter: Lynn (Greg) & (Rascal) Gear, Hancock; Son, Dairel (Becky) Leitenberger, Plainfield; Granddaughter: Tabitha (Joshua) Collins and (soon to be great-grandson Zachary Hamilton), Stevens Point; Step-grandsons: John Schurk and Calvin Brownlow, Plainfield; Great-Granddaughter: Jordan Marshall, Neskoro; Sisters, Judy (Charles) Ahlborn, Hancock; Norene Ahlborn, Hancock, and Linda (Harland) Yonke, Mukwanago; and Brother: Ronald Droste, Milwaukee.

Dale "Suds" Sundsmo, age 47 of Adams, WI passed away Saturday, March 1, 2003 surrounded by family and friends at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, WI.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 8th, 2003 at Roseberry’s Funeral Home & Crematory in Friendship, WI. Burial will be held at Comstock Cemetery, town of Marcellon at a later date.
Dale was born on June 7th, 1955 to John and Hilda (Arneson) Sundsmo in Indiana. He worked for the town of Adams. Dale enjoyed playing horse shoes, pool, darts, trap, hunting and fishing.
Dale was preceded in death by his father (John); brother (Leonard); sister (Betty Ann).
