Lawrence James Walker, 82, of 1427 Hayden Street, Altoona, WI, spent his final days at the Clairemont Nursing Home, where he passed away at the age of 82 on May 21, 1998, as a result of complications due to cancer.
He was born in Altoona, Wisconsin on December 27, 1915, the son of the late Frank James and Catherine (Nowak) Walker. He was a long time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Altoona and a charter member of the Altoona V.F.W. Post 10405. Lawrence served in the United States Navy during WW II. He was also a prisoner of war for several years during that time and also received a purple heart.
He married Maxine Weaver in 1965. They shared life together for 28 years until Maxine's death on January 5, 1993. Lawrence was employed with Uniroyal until his time of retirement.
One of Lawrence's greatest loves in his life was traveling and visiting historic places throughout the United States. He was a great outdoors man enjoying golf, fishing and camping.
He is survived by his son, Frank Walker (Janet), Appleton, WI; his daughter, Nancy Hacker (Jeff), Appleton, WI; his step-daughter, Roxann Jacobson of Elk Mound, WI; his sister, Marion Rusk of Eau Claire, WI; and his grandchildren, Chadwick Walker, Caroline Walker, Nickolas Hacker, and Kristen Hacker, all of Appleton, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and three brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 1998 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1827 Lynn Avenue, Altoona, Wisconsin, with Father Norbert Wilger officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery following the service. A memorial fund is being established. Fuller-Speckien Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Vera Weltzin Zempel
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Vera Weltzin Zempel, 87, of Friendship Village, 8104 Highwood Dr. Bloomington, formerly of Menomonie and Eau Claire, died Friday, May 22, 1998 at the Village.
She was born Sept. 3 1910, in Ludington Township, Eau Claire County, to Emil and Edith (Pickett) Wiese. She graduated from the Augusta High School in 1929, Eau Claire Rural Normal School in 1930, Wis. State College in 1957 with a 2 year degree in Rural Education and in 1964 with a B.S. Degree from Wisconsin State College in Eau Claire. Her teaching career started at Pine View Country School in Ludington and later taught at Sherman Creek Elementary School in Eau Claire. She retired in 1976 after 30 years of teaching.
She married Joachim Weltzin on Aug. 6, 1933 in Ludington. She later married Wm. Zempel on Oct. 7, 1967 in Eau Claire. He passed away March 10, 1972.
Vera had lived in Menomonie for 18 years. She moved to Eau Claire in 1958 and lived there until moving to Bloomington in 1994.
She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Eau Claire where she served as a Church Deacon. She was a member of its Library Club, Ladies Circle and of the Keenager Group. She was also a member of the Wisconsin Area Educator's Retirement Association.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Eleanor Merrill of Novato, CA and Alice (Butch) Beihl of Inver Grove Heights, MN; 2 sisters, Elma Boyea of Cadott and Vivian Lambrecht of Augusta; 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents and brother, Clarence Wiese.
Funeral services will be held Tues. May 26, 1998 at 1 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Eau Claire with Rev. John Hosmann officiating. Burial will be in the West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta. Friends may call from 11 a.m. and until time of services Tuesday at the church. Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta in charge of arrangements.
Alvina Paul
Alvina H. Paul, 87, 608 Mead St., died Friday at Dove Health Care.
She was born June 20, 1913 in Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Emil and Anna (Grams) Glenz. She moved to Fall Creek in 1924 and later to Eau Claire and attended Eau Claire Senior High School. Years later she attended the vocational school and received her GED. Alvina worked at Uniroyal for 30 years retiring in 1960. She enjoyed gardening and fishing. She caught a 50 pound muskie and had it mounted.
Survivors include her daughter, Luann Woodford, Eau Claire; a brother, Emil Glenz, Alger, Mich.; and two sisters, Hilda Glenz and Wilma Hermanson, both of Eau Claire. She was preceded in death by her parents,; two brothers, Arthur Glenz and Arnold Glenz; and a sister, Emma Glenz.
Funeral Services are Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, in Eau Claire with Pastor Ned Lenhart officiating. Interment is at Rest Haven Gardens, Town of Washington. Friends and relatives may call Wednesday from 1 p.m. until time of services. Stokes and Mundt Funeral Chapel of Eau Claire is serving the family.
Charles Rauscher
Charles B. Rauscher, 66, of 325 Dwight St., Chippewa Falls, died Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chippewa Falls with hospice after a valiant battle with lung cancer. Charles passed away surrounded by his family and their love.
He was born Feb. 20, 1934 in Chippewa County, the son of Bernard C. and Mary (Urban) Rauscher. He had worked at Uniroyal as a superintendent for 40 years, retiring in 1992. He married Carol Bernier on Nov. 18, 1954 at St. Charles Church in Chippewa Falls. He was a member of Notre Dame Church.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, whom he loved with all his heart; two sons, Charles W. (Patti) of Altoona and Thomas, of Minneapolis, Minn.; four daughters, Cathy (significant other, Dave Jensen), Connie (Bill) Schoch, Sue (Dave) Bleskachek and Michele (Tony) Raycher, all of Chippewa Falls; one sister, Rose Ann Leavens, of West Bend; 11 grandchildren, Erin, Christopher, Matthew, Andy, Aimee, Jon, Christi, Sarah, Kattie, Adam and Sam and one great granddaughter, Josie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Notre Dame Church in Chippewa Falls. Interment will be in North Catholic Cemetery in Bloomer.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and until 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Horan Funeral Home in Chippewa Falls. There will be a Christian Vigil Service at 5 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Charles was a big man with a huge heart. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, polka music, Packer parties and working in his woodworking shop. Most of all, he enjoyed his family and grandchildren.
During his retirement, Charles was active in the Headstart program, Family Health, helping out everyone and serving the Lord. In his family's eyes he was a soldier and a hero, smiling and joking until his last days.
Dorothy M. Hansen
Dorothy M. Hansen, age 69, of Menomonie, Wis., died Friday, October 13, 2000, at American Lutheran Home in Menomonie.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Duane Hansen of Menomonie; a sister, Gloria (Oliver) Blanchard of Gretna, La.; four nieces and one nephew and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
Funeral services will be Monday, October 16, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Menomonie with the Rev. Lyle Schulte officiating. Friends may call Sunday, October 15, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie.
George Menzies
MOUNDS VIEW, MINN. -- George S. Menzies, age 83, of Mounds View, Minn., formerly of Spooner, died at Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis.
He is survived by a daughter, DeLoris Tomniczak and husband Edward; grandsons, Geoffrey and wife Denise, James and wife Carolyn, Brian and wife Valerie; granddaughter, Tina and husband Mike Herzog; great grandchildren, Matthew, Jessica, Brianna, Kacie; sister, Beatrice Bibby of Ettrick, Wis.; sister-in-law, Goldene Menzies of Calif.; nephew, Richard and wife Wilma; nieces, Jean, Allen, Julie, Jan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence; parents, Samuel and Ida Menzies; brother, James; sister, Grace.
A celebration of George's life will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, 10/16/2000 at Washburn-McReavy Duschane Chapel, 4239 West Broadway, Robbinsdale, Minn.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the celebration.

Elmer Olson
INDEPENDENCE - Elmer Lester Olson, 85, of Independence, died Friday (October 13, 2000) at Tri-County Memorial Nursing Home, Whitehall.
He was born April 14, 1915, in Trempealeau County, to Charlie and Minnie (Olson) Olson. Lester was a WWII Army veteran, member of Sura-Wiersgalla American Legion Post 186 of Independence and Trempealeau County Voiture 260, 40 et 8. He was a member of Chimney Rock Lutheran Church.
Lester worked on road construction throughout Wisconsin. Following retirement, he enjoyed being a helping hand doing farm work, flowers, gardening, visiting, sightseeing and traveling in the area.
Survivors include a niece, Lois (Jim) Walek of Milwaukee; six nephews, Hans (Sue) Lee of New Berlin, Lonnie (Katie) Lee of Independence, Robert (Jean) Olson of Osseo, Edward (Judith) Olson, Richard (Carol) Olson and Jerry Olson all of Strum.
Lester was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Margaret Lee and infant Adelaide Olson; brother, Rudolph Olson and a nephew, Charles Lee.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chimney Rock Lutheran Church, rural Strum, with Rev. Ted Simpson officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and 8 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
