EAU CLAIRE — Jeffrey B. Chwala, 21, of 429 Platt St., Eau Claire, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999 at Luther Hospital from injuries he received in an industrial accident that occurred on Oct. 6.
Jeff moved to the Boyd area with his family in 1981. He attended Stanley-Boyd schools. He then moved to Eau Claire and was an employee at American Coating Technology Co.
Jeff loved hunting, working on his car, music and snowmobiling. Jeff’s ready smile and “I’m one step ahead of you Dad” gleam will leave a big vacancy in our hearts. Although he leaves Dad and little sister Corrine behind, we are consoled in the knowledge that Jeff and Mom are together in the hands of our Lord.
Survivors include his father, Dale Chwala of Boyd; sister, Corrine Chwala of Boyd; maternal grandmother, Clara Keller of Milwaukee; paternal grandfather, Ted Chwala of Stanley; and paternal grandmother, Armella Chwala of Cadott.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret, in 1991 and maternal grandfather, Gilbert Keller.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13 at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Stanley, with the Rev. Matt Miklasz officiating and burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Boyd. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Plombon Funeral Home in Stanley.
Lillian F. Evans
Lillian F. Evans, 99, formerly of Rhinelander, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at the Rutledge Home in Chippewa Falls.
She was born Oct. 4, 1900, in Chicago, to Charles and Josephine Hoker. She grew up in Chicago where she married Frank Peters. They resided in Oaklawn, Ill., Deerbrook and in Hazelhurst where they owned a resort. They moved to Rhinelander, where they owned and operated Frank's Fine Foods Restaurant.
Mr. Peters preceded her in death in 1957. She continued to work as a cook in Rhinelander.
In 1970, Lillian married Lester Evans in Rhinelander. He preceded her in death in 1971. She moved to the Evergreen Manor in Rhinelander where she resided for 25 years. She moved to the Rutledge Home in Chippewa Falls in 1995.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Judi (Glen) Robison of Chippewa Falls and Jerry (Tina) Krause of San Angelo, Texas; seven great-grandchildren, Tyler, Brett and Dustin Hansen, Frank and Denise Krause and Brian and Matthew Robison; and two great-great-grandchildren. Besides her two husbands, she is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, June Krause on Dec. 18, 1956; three sisters, Margaret Zeman, Anna Zetek and Jewel Tristano; four brothers, Jim, Chick, Arthur and Frank Hoker.
A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12 at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls, with the Rev. Stacie Schubert of Central Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Rhinelander.
Romaine G. Knudtson
Romaine G. Knudtson, 77, formerly of Eau Claire, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Lakeside South Nursing and Rehabilitation in Chippewa Falls.
He was born April 21, 1922, to Martha (Erickson) and Carl Knudtson in Eau Claire, where he grew up. He was employed at the Eau Claire County Home, where he loved to garden.
Romaine married Florence Allen Wagar on Nov. 15, 1972, in Eau Claire. They resided in Eau Claire until moving to Chippewa Falls in 1997.
Romaine played in a band and loved to play the harmonica, to fish, and to paint.
Survivors include his wife, Florence; two stepdaughters, Mary Haas of Madison and Marilyn White of Stevens Point; one sister, Elaine Beaver of Eau Claire; his brother-in-law, Joe Beaver of Eau Claire; his sister-in-law, Phyllis Knudtson of Eau Claire; one step granddaughter, Alta Haas; his special friend, Arlyn Hayes of Chippewa Falls; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Eleanore Beaver; and his brother, LaVern Knudtson.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12 at the Mae Rowan Ecumenical Center of Lakeside Nursing and Rehabilitation in Chippewa Falls, with the Rev. Gerald Mann officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery, town of Hallie.
Friends may call one-half hour prior to the service Tuesday at the Mae Rowan Ecumenical Center.

Henneman service
Funeral services for Dolores Henneman were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999 at Notre Dame Church, Chippewa Falls. Rev. Scott Bauer and Rev. Albert Sonnberger con-celebrated at the funeral mass and also officiated at the prayers of interment in Calvary Cemetery, Chippewa Falls.
Music during the mass was provided by the St. Charles Funeral Choir, Ben Nguyen, and Judy Brist. Readings were given by Sarah Dolesy. Gift Bearers were Kim, Emily, Angie and Ann Henneman, Jeni Brady, Brenda and Amanda Mathison.
Casket Bearers were John, David, Adam, Patrick and Joe Henneman, Eddie Mathison, Bruce Peterson, and Dave Keto.
Friday afternoon the Ladies of St. Charles Church recited the rosary and Friday evening Rev. Bauer led the family, relatives and friends in a Christian Vigil Service at the Horan Funeral Home, Chippewa Falls.
M. Leo Howard
M. Leo Howard, 83, formerly of Eau Claire, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at the Chippewa Manor Nursing Home, Chippewa Falls.
He was born Oct. 9, 1916, in Gravette, Ark., the son of Robert and Mary Howard. He attended schools in Pittsburgh, Kansas, including Kansas State Teacher’s College from which he graduated.
In 1937, he started in radio as an announcer at KOAM in Pittsburg, later he went on to KWTO Springfield, Missouri, KFBI Wichita, Kan., and WEDC Chicago, Ill. At this point he entered the Army as a Private and was honorably discharged as a Captain, having been Company Commander with the 84th division in the European Theatre. Among the decorations he received were a Bronze Star with Four Oak-Leaf Clusters, the Croix de Guerre, the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Cross.
Leo returned to the broadcasting industry in 1946, working as commercial and general manager in Oklahoma City, Nashville, Des Moine and Tulsa. In 1955 he came to Eau Claire as a General Manager of WEAU-TV, and was also General Manager of WAXX-AM and WEAU-FM of Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire.
He also served as the President of the Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce, Chippewa Valley Board of Trade, Director of the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association and a member of the Commerce and Industry Advisory Committee. He was past member of the Masonic Lodge and Zor Shrine. Due to illness, Leo retired in 1971.
Leo married Edith McNamara in 1947 and they had three children.
He will be sadly missed by his children, Susan Grothen and Bill (Tammy) Howard; and five grandchildren, Stephanie, Abby, Amy, Kimberly and Kyle.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith; and his son, Robert.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Smith Funeral Chapel, Eau Claire. Interment will be in Prairie View Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.
Leland E. Smiley
MADISON — Leland E. Smiley, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Woodland House, Madison.
He was born Jan. 21, 1910, in Massena, Iowa, the son of Leon Wilmot and Bertha (Buchanan) Smiley. As a boy, he moved with his family to a farm near Curtiss. In June 1930 he began working for the Northern States Power Company as a lineman with a construction crew at Owen.
Leland married Eleanor Green on Dec. 31, 1936, in Lancaster, Wis. He continued to work for the power company as a lineman in Stanley, a transmission line patrolman covering the area from Chippewa Falls to Abbotsford and finally, as a NSP District Representative in Thorp. During World War II he worked the Green family farm while working full time for NSP, because his brother-in-law and brother were in the Army. After the war he bought a small dairy farm in Curtiss where he raised horses. After his retirement from NSP on Feb. 28, 1974, he lived in Thorp, Cadott, Stanley, Marshfield and Madison.
In 1984 he married Fran Isaacs who died in December 1987.
He is survived by three children, Kathleen (Richard) Krueger of Charlevoix, Mich., Thomas (Elaine) Smiley of Madison and Barbara (Robert) Bishop of Crystal Lake, Ill; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eleanor; his brothers, Lester and Donald; and his sister, Mary Bulgrin.
Dad loved the outdoors, as a place to work both as a farmer and as a lineman, for recreational fishing and pheasant hunting with his labrador, which he continued until he was 80 years old. He enjoyed riding horses and training hunting dogs. He was a long time member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and of the Stanley Methodist Church, serving as a board member and usher.
Funeral service will be held at 12 noon Monday, June 19 at Stanley Methodist Church with the Rev. Carl Swarr officiating. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery, Curtiss.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 18 at Plombon Funeral Home, Stanley.
Memorials may be made to the Stanley Methodist Church.
Randall C. `Bud’ Ashley
Randall C. "Bud" Ashley, 85, formerly of 8058 136th St., Chippewa Falls, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 31, 1999, at the Rutledge Home in Chippewa Falls.
He was born Sept. 7, 1913, in the town of Anson, Chippewa County to Myrtle (Davis) and Newman Ashley. He attended school in Dallas and Barron, graduating from Barron High School in 1931. He then attended UW-Eau Claire..
Bud was a buttermaker in his father's creamery at Dallas for many years and he held the youngest buttermaker license in Wisconsin at that time. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and served at Childress, Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Bud married Carol Melby Carter on Dec. 23, 1943, in a military wedding at Fort Snelling, Minn. They lived in Chippewa Falls, where he managed the Pure Ice and Locker Plant for 13 years. He then owned Bud's North Star gas station for 13 years.
He is survived by Carol of Chippewa Falls; two daughters, Linda (Bob) Robertson of Chippewa Falls, Susan Bruley of Chippewa Falls; one son, Newman Ashley of San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren, Heather, Jordan and Chad Bruley, all of Chippewa Falls; three sisters, Vi Simonson of Chippewa Falls, Jean Erickson of Boynton Beach, Fla., Doris Dahle of Connecticut and Florida; many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one nephew, James Dahle; three brothers-in-law, Elmer Erickson, Phillip Dahle and Dr. Sig Simonson.
Private graveside services will be held Friday, Sept. 3, at Forest Hill Cemetery, Chippewa Falls, with the Rev. Richard Estrem-Fuller of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. There will be no visitation.
Memorials in Randall's memory may be given to the Building Fund at Trinity United Methodist Church, Chippewa Falls.
