Clinton - Derek D. Desing, 18, of Clinton, WI died Tuesday, September 8, 2009, in Madison, WI. He was born March 5, 1991 in Beloit, WI, the son of Mark E and Leah Holloway Desing. Derek was a 2009 graduate of Clinton High School and was attending the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Survivors include his parents, Mark and Leah of Clinton, WI; a brother, Duncan Desing of Clinton, WI; maternal grandfather, Donald Holloway of Maryland; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Derek was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Jean Holloway and paternal grandparents, Donald and Betty Desing.
A private Celebration of Life for Derek will be held in the BRIAN MARK Funeral Home, 504 Milwaukee Road, Clinton, WI with the Reverend William J. Uffenbeck of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 13, 2009 in the BRIAN MARK Funeral Home, Clinton, WI. A memorial fund has been established.
Geraldine Barbara Hammell
Beloit - Geraldine Barbara Hammell age 86, died Friday September 4, 2009, at Sun Valley East in Beloit under the care of Beloit Regional Hospice. She was born June 24, 1923 in Wibeux, Montana, the daughter of Martin and Christine Steinbeck Olsen. Geraldine married Daniel G. Hammell, Jr. on August 27, 1943 in Christ Presbyterian Church, Madison, WI. He predeceased her on January 24, 2009.
Geraldine’s celebration of life will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 10, 2009, in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, 835 Dearborn Avenue, South Beloit, IL with Reverend David Ewing of Sun Valley Presbyterian Church officiating. There will be no visitation per her request.

Roger Whitney
Beloit - Roger Whitney, age 82, died Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 at Pioneer Court. Roger was born in July 3, 1927 to the late Charles and Esther (Andre’) Whitney in Beloit. He married the former Betty Burkmen on October 21, 1950 at Gridley Congregational Church in Beloit. Roger enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Corp during the end of WW II and served his Country until his honorable discharge. He was a member of Sun Valley Presbyterian Church, the American Legion and the Barber Shop Chorus. Roger was an avid horse shoe pitcher, enjoyed fishing, hunting and country music. As a teenager he played guitar and harmonica and truly enjoyed eating pies and cookies. Roger will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Whitney; six children, Cindy (Gene) Keller of Beloit, Dexter (Debbie) Whitney of Prairie Village, KS, Mary (Jeff) Booher of Columbus, IN, Tim (Ruthann) Whitney of Beloit, Andy (Sandy) Whitney of Delavan, WI, and Polly (John) LaBlanc of Port Washington, WI, 14 grandchildren, Jeremy, Jenny, Jason, Jolene, Bob, Emily, Brian, Kevin, Kristofer, Michelle, Sara, Kerry, David and Sarah, his brothers and sisters, Eleanor (Milford) Lovass, Beatrice (Bob) Hanna, Wesley (Carol) Whitney, Rodney (Donna) Whitney and Beverly (Wayne) Brown, his Aunt Marge Pharo and many nieces and nephews and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Evelyn (Romeo) Stickly and Genevieve (Wiley) Larson and his brother Larry Whitney.
Roger’s Funeral Service will be 3:00 p.m. on Saturday September 5th, 2009 at SUN VALLEY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1650 Sun Valley Road, Beloit, WI with Pastor David Ewing officiating. Friends will be received on Friday at the BRIAN MARK Funeral Home, 1000 Inman Parkway, Beloit from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday at Church from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. Following the service the cortege will process to Turtleville Cemetery for Full Military Burial Rites and Interment. Memorials may be directed to Beloit Regional Hospice. All are invited back to Church for luncheon and fellowship following Roger’s burial.
Leo August Jacobs
Clinton - Leo August Jacobs departed this life on Saturday August 29, 2009 from his home in Clinton, Wisconsin. He was born February 16, 1944 to John and Johanna (Huffman) Jacobs of Ionia, Iowa and shared his childhood with eight brothers and sisters. He is survived by his son, Brian Jacobs, his daughter in law, Sandi, their sons Doug, Kevin, Eric & Brad; and by his daughter, Janette Jacobs, and her children, Jacob & Jenna.
As a young man, Leo loved horses and was skilled at breaking and training them. According to his friends, he kept his best horse-breaking tricks to himself much to the chagrin of their egos and sore bodies when they tried to ride the same horses he could. Leo became a farmer in Durand, Illinois. Later, he worked as a machinist for Chrysler Corporation and Elco-Textron Inc.
Leo liked spending time relaxing, joking, laughing, and telling stories outdoors, whether in the yard at home or at Fort Bergen. He loved being informed and read his newspapers from cover to cover while watching the news on television.
In retirement, he became a close friend and confidant of his children. His grandchildren could always count on him for pocket change to go get ice cream and on his sweet tooth for a snack in his home.
Leo’s Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 2009 in the ST. STEPHEN’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 716 Shu-Lar Lane, Clinton, WI with Father Sanctus Ibe officiating. Friends may call Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service in the Church. Following Leo’s service, the cortege will process to Clinton Cemetery for interment. Elizabeth Maria Boyer
“Betty”
Beloit, WI - After 95 faithful years of serving her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Elizabeth Maria (Betty) Boyer passed into His presence on Tuesday afternoon, December 8, 2009.
Betty was born in Kenosha, WI in 1914 to recent Swedish immigrants, Erick and Hilda Soderberg. She and her husband Wendell, started the People’s Church in Beloit in 1942 and continued as pastors there until the retired in 1983. Her gifts of music and Bible teaching impacted many Beloiters over the years. After retirement Betty served as a RSVP volunteer and volunteered at the Beloit Hospital. At the time of her death she was the accompanist for the “Goldenaires” and often played for Sing-a-longs at various nursing homes in the area.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother-in-law Loren Weeden, Betty leaves two children Rev. Wayne (Kay) of Lancaster, PA, and Karen (Harold) Shortenhaus of Delavan, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was survived by her sister, Edythe (Deed) Weeden of Beloit and the Rev. Robert (Beverly) Soderberg of Tennessee.
The funeral will be held at the people’s Church on West Grand Ave. at 11:00 on Friday with family visitation beginning at 9:00 until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Floral Lawns Cemetery in South Beloit.
The family requests that donations be made in her memory to the People’s Church Missions Fund.
Helen E. Wallace Wildermuth
Clinton - Helen E. Wallace Wildermuth, 90, of rural Clinton, WI, passed away on Monday, November 30, 2009 in UW Hospital in Madison, WI as a result of an automobile accident. She was born October 17, 1919 on a farm in Turtle Township, Rock County, WI, the daughter of Fred and Mable Drew-Poulsen Wallace. Helen’s maternal grandfather was the first white child born in Beloit and her grandfather, Caleb Blodgett was largely responsible for the settlement of Beloit. The farm she grew up on is now the Beloit Industrial Park growing condos, homes and the city water tower. Helen was a graduate of Beloit High School Class of 1937, Blackburn College, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and received her Master’s Degree from UW-Madison. She taught locally in Avon Center, Clinton Corners, Clinton, Wauwatosa and McHenry, IL.
Helen considered herself an “educational vagabond” – she published a book about her experiences a year ago entitled, “Vagabond Teacher”. Some of her adventures include, summer school in Oslo, Norway in 1948; working with friends (Quakers) in Juamantla, Mexico; hosteling in Europe touring England, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France by bicycle; summer school in Edinburg, Scotland before going on to London as an exchange teacher; a meeting with Queen Elizabeth of England; Trees for Tomorrow in northern Wisconsin; summer school in Saltilla, Mexico; four years teaching in Cartagena, Columbia and while there touring South America, down the Amazon River, through Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and back to Peru; many student tours through Greece, Egypt, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa and all of Europe.
In 1972, she married Berl Wildermuth in Belleview, FL and became a farm wife back in Turtle Township. Berl passed away on May 14, 2009. She taught basic education classes for Blackhawk Technical School at the Janesville Rehab Center until winter travel in their RV changed her plans. In 1984 they purchased their winter home in DeFuniak Springs, FL and traveled south until 2006 when Berl’s health required them to stay in Clinton close to family.
Helen is survived by her step son and wife, Robert and Anita Wildermuth of Clinton, WI; brother, Lester David (Betty) Wallace of Fox Lake, WI and sister, Ruth (Ernest) Doty of Otisco, IN; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and a host of friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and three brothers and a sister-in-law, Fredrick Glenn and Elinor Wallace, Ralph Willard Wallace and Robert Owen Wallace.
A Celebration of Helen’s Life will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 5, 2009, in the BRIAN MARK Funeral Home, 1000 Inman Parkway, Beloit, WI with Ted Niehaus officiating. Following a light luncheon in the funeral home, Inurnment will be in the Clinton Cemetery, Clinton, WI. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2009 in the funeral home.
