MIDDLETON - Shawn Marie Scheel, formerly of Watertown, age 46, passed away suddenly at home on December 3, 2004 due to a heart attack. Shawn was born on September 25, 1958 in Fort Atkinson, WI, to parents Orville and Marlene (Kottwitz) Scheel. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1976 and UW- Stout in 1980. She was also further educated as a paralegal. Shawn was currently employed at Dane County Title Company and The University Bookstore at Hilldale. She was an active member and former trustee at Glenwood Moravian Community Church. Shawn enjoyed reading, going to concerts and spending time with her two cats. She is survived by her parents Orville and Marlene Scheel of Watertown, WI; sister, Shelly (Danny) Piper of Lake Mills, WI; brother, Shannon (Ann) Scheel of Phoenix, AZ; sister, Sheryl (Dan) Piper of Eau Claire, WI; special nieces and nephews: Sommer, Nicole, Taylor, Laura, Molly, Chandler, Jeremy, Chase and Jack. A Memorial Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, December 6, 2004 at Glenwood Moravian Community Church, 725 Gilmore, Madison. Services will be officiated by the Rev. Mary Lou Plummer and the Rev. Betsy Miller. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Glenwood Moravian Community Church.
Mildred Kayes

Mildred "Midge" B. Kayes passed away on Dec. 18, 2004 at the age of 88, at Alterra Clare Bridge in Middleton, WI after a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. Mildred was born on Oct. 7, 1916 in Omaha, NE. She was the daughter of Edward and Ethel Berg. On Oct. 15, 1944 she married Seymour (Shorty) Kayes who preceded her in death in 1998. Mildred was also preceded in death by her sister, Sara (Berg) Zorinsky. She met her husband of 54 years when he traveled to Omaha to meet his brother's fiancee, Frances Berg, Mildred's sister. Mildred was a homemaker and a devoted and loving mother, aunt, grandmother and friend. In the 1970s she joined the University Book Store in the accounting department. Mildred was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling and playing Mah Jongg. She is survived by her sister, Frances (Berg) Katz, her brother, Nathan Berg, both of Omaha, NE, two sons, Dr. Stephen Kayes (Mobile, AL) and Evan Kayes Naperville, IL) and two grandchildren, Jonathan Kayes (Berkeley, CA) and Thomas Kayes (Naperville, IL)> Funeral services are pending. Burial will take place at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Omaha, NE. Her children would like to express their deep gratitude to Alterra Clare Bridge for the wonderful care and support they provided to Mildred during the past six years. In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Jewish Social Services of Madison.
Robert W. Hammel

Madison - Robert W. Hammel was born at home in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin on May 7, 1925. He died at his home in Madison on December 18, 2004. Bob was born to Sylvia (Konichek) and Paul Hammel. He fondly told stories of growing up on his grandparents' truck farm. His strong work ethic guided him throughout his life. Bob was a member of the Prairie du Chien High School class of 1942. His employer and mentor, Eddie Farrell, was his high school boxing coach and encouraged him to attend the UW School of Pharmacy. Bob was proud to be a letter winner on the UW Boxing team under coaches Johnny Walsh and Vern Woodward. During this time he met his long-time friend and teammate Dick Miyagawa. While at the UW he belonged to Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Rho Chi and Kappa Psi. His college years were interrupted when he enlisted and earned his commission in the United States Navy. He served in both the European and Pacific Theaters. Bob returned to finish his undergraduate degree in pharmacy. He graduated in June of 1948 and married Barbara Bowen on December 18. Bob worked in Oregon, WI, at Lawson's Drug Store. He was recalled into the Navy during the Korean conflict. Upon returning from the war, Bob re-entered the UW and earned his masters degree in marketing and Ph.D. in pharmacy administration while working as a pharmacist and a Naval Reserve Officer to support his family. Bob began teaching at the School of Pharmacy in 1958. His students recall his use of Navy jargon and unwavering high academic standards. He was exemplary in his support of the pharmacy profession by serving on numerous boards. Bob was a mentor to many students especially his graduate students. Past students faithfully wrote to Doc Hammel following his retirement in 1990. Bob was an active member of the Republican Party, Zor Shriners, Masonic Temple, Scottish Rite Bodies, VFW Post #10272, life member of the Reserve Officers Association and many local and national pharmacy organizations. Visiting his sons in Alaska and Hawaii, going to the cottage in Avoca and the annual Canadian fishing trips were highlights of his retirement. Bob is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara; their three children and five grandchildren, Mary Jo (Tom) Tierney of Madison and their children, Chris and Katy; Rob (Rorie) of Girdwood, Alaska and their children, Raina and Ryan; and Dave (Donna) of Cabot, Arkansas and their son, Michael. He is further survived by his sister, Mary Jo (Paul) Pinard of Prairie du Chien and their children, Katie and Ross, his best friend since childhood, Roy T. West of Prairie du Chien, and his sister in-law and caregiver Helen Bowen of Poynette. He will be missed by his many friends that he made from the various chapters of his life. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, December 23, 2004 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1123 Vilas Avenue, Madison with Rev. Amanda Stein officiating. Friends may greet the family from 11:00 am until the time of service Thursday. Cottage Grove – William A. “Art” Vinney, age 76, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 17, 2004 at Harbor House Assisted Living in Deforest, Wis. He was born on October 29, 1928 in Tomah Wis., the son of Lester and Leone (Dimmitt) Vinney. Art was united in marriage to Gail M. Langdok on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1958. Family and friends, and hunting and gardening were what fulfilled his life the most. Art is survived by his wife, Gail; their three daughters, Shirley (Joe) Margraf, Debra (Tim) Jensen, Jean (Scott) Whitney; and son, Robert. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at 11:00 am at OLSON-HOLZHUTER-CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 206 W. Prospect Ave., Stoughton. Monsignor Ray Kertz will officiate. Burial will follow the service. Visitation will be held at the Stoughton funeral home on Tuesday, December 21 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Georgia Woods

MADISON — Georgia Lucille Woods, age 93, died on December 17, 2004 at the Don and Marilyn Anderson Hospice Care Center. She was born September 30, 1911 in Lancaster, WI, to James Henry and Bessie Mae (Ziegler) Hayden. Georgia graduated from Lancaster High School in 1928 and then moved to Milwaukee, where she attended Miss Brown’s Business School. She was a stenographer/secretary in retailing and banking for 20 years. On April 3, 1943, she married Erwin Huenink in Milwaukee, WI, and was widowed in November 1944. On May 6, 1949, she married David McCann Woods in Lancaster, WI, and together they raised two daughters, Kathryn and Diana, until David’s death in March of 1973. In Monroe, she was an active member and Elder at Union Presbyterian Church, and member of Monroe Women’s Club for 50 years. At various times, she was a Girl Scout leader, soprano with Sweet Adelines, active member of Questors, board member of Green County Mental Health. She enjoyed traveling and photography and was an avid bridge player. She liked organizing and bringing a project to completion. She enjoyed the Green County countryside. Georgia is survived by her daughters, Kathryn W. (Robert) Richardson of Madison and Diana J. (Dennis) Oostdik of Monroe; her brother, Arthur Hayden of Padre Island, Texas; five grandchildren, Robert (Mariam Thalos) Richardson of Salt Lake City, UT, David W. (Catherine J.) Richardson of Monument, CO, Kathryn E. Oostdik of Madison, Julia A. Oostdik of Madison, and Benjamin D. (Amy) Oostdik of Oshkosh; and three great grandchildren, Oliver E. Richardson, Elijah G. Thalos, and Jackson A. Richardson. Georgia was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; and by three siblings: Florence (Marshall) Petersen, Fred (Lorraine) Hayden, and Russell Hayden. Burial will be a private graveside service at Oak Grove Cemetery in Lacrosse, WI. A memorial service conducted by Pastor Steven Minnema of Covenant Presbyterian Church will be held at Attic Angel Place, 8301 Old Sauk Road, Middleton, WI on January 5, 2004 at 2:30. Margaret E. Monroe, age 90, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, December 17, 2004 at Attic Angel Place in Middleton, Wisconsin. Born on May 21, 1914 in New York City, she was the daughter of Ralph B. and Ruth C. Monroe of New York and Connecticut. She graduated from New York State College for Teachers at Albany with B.A. (1935) and B.S.L.S. (1937) and took advanced degrees from Columbia University (M.A. Teachers College, 1939, and Ph.D. in Library Science, 1962). After 13 years on the staff of the New York Public Library, Margaret Monroe served as Director of the American Heritage Project of the American Library Association in Chicago from 1951 to 1954. After 8 years (1954 - 1963) on the faculty of the Graduate School of Library Service, Rutgers University, Professor Monroe moved to Madison to join the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Library School. She served as Professor from 1963 to her retirement in 1981. She was Director of the Library School from 1963 to 1970, years of great growth for this professional school. Among other successful endeavors, she established the doctoral program. Throughout Margaret Monroe's distinguished career served in professional leadership roles in New Jersey, Wisconsin and at the national level. She was President of the American Association of Library Schools and of the American Library Association's (ALA) Adult Services Division, served twice on the ALA Council, and chaired the ALA Committee on Accreditation for master's degree programs in library science. The celebration of her 90th birthday in May 2004 brought greetings from former students and colleagues across the nation. Professor Monroe was known for her rigorous scholarship and for her commitment to library outreach services to adults and underserved groups. She was the author of four published books on public librarianship and a host of research reports and journal articles. After her retirement she co-authored a book, The Challenge of Aging: A Bibliography (1983), with Rhea J. Rubin. Margaret Monroe's professional honors included the Award for Distinguished Contribution to Education for Librarianship given by Beta Phi Mu, the national Library Science Honor Society. A book in celebration of her career accomplishments, The Service Imperative for Libraries: Essays in Honor of Margaret E. Monroe (1982), was edited by one of her former doctoral students Gail A. Schlachter. In 1985, the ALA Reference and Adult Services Division established an annual award in tribute to Margaret Monroe's contributions to teaching, research and service in the field of library services to adults. This recognition, the Margaret E. Monroe Library Adult Services Award, has since brought acknowledgment to numerous outstanding leaders in the field. During her active retirement, Margaret Monroe provided leadership in the Madison community through the Madison Senior Center, where she served on the Board and then developed and conducted a two-year program, "The Challenge of Our Aging Society." She served for several years on the Dane County Commission on Aging. She was active in the League of Women Voters of Dane County and in the First Congregational United Church of Christ. In 1992 she was named one of Madison's Women of Distinction. Margaret Monroe was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert W. Monroe and Cleaveland H. Monroe. Survivors include her sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Monroe of North Carolina and Cara H. Monroe of California; cousins Antoinette H. Booth of New York and Cornelia R. Sparks of Virginia; nieces Victoria B. Novak of Pennsylvania and Roberta E. Pluto of Ohio; and other cherished cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 23, at 3:30 at Attic Angel Place Community Room, 8301 Old Sauk Road. Rev. Curtis Anderson, senior minister at the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ, will officiate with Attic Angel Place minister Jim Engmann. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Margaret E. Monroe Fund (which will be used for doctoral studies at the School of Library and Information Studies) at the University of Wisconsin Foundation, to the First Congregational Church Foundation (Madison), or to Attic Angel Place.

Stoughton - Anastasia Theresa Zimmerman, age 86, passed away on Wednesday, December 15, 2004 at her home in Stoughton. She was born on October 30, 1918 in Mt. Horeb, Wis., the daughter of Adolph and Salome (Zeier) Sutter. Anastasia was united in marriage to Herbert Zimmerman in Mt. Horeb, Wis., on June 23, 1938. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, sewing, needle point, fishing and bicycling. Anastasia was an excellent cook and her family especially loved her pies. She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Stoughton and a charter member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Madison. Anastasia is survived by her husband, Herbert; and their children, Jerome (Carol) of Madison, Jeanne (Joe) Labansky of Lone Rock, Mary Paegelow of Oostburg, Wis., and Thomas (Anne) of Madison. She is further survived by their grandchildren, Heidi (Eric) Smedal of Stoughton, Trudy (Joel) Stensaas of Stoughton, Steve (Theresa) Manhart of Los Angeles, Cal., Timothy (Kari) Manhart of Stoughton, James Zimmerman of Madison, Jeffrey (Bonnie) Zimmerman of Barneveld, John (Linda) Zimmerman of Mt. Horeb, Christina Pacholski of Oostburg, Lisa (Gary) Stottlemyer of Senegal, W. Africa, Anthony (Deborah) Paegelow of Red Granite, Wis., Patrick Zimmerman of Verona, and Kelli (Stephen) Slaughter of Madison. She is also survived by 18 great grandchildren; her brother, Arthur (Charlotte) Sutter of Mt. Horeb; and brother- in-law, Joseph Zimmerman of Oconomowoc.
