MADISON - Mary Ann Baer, age 64, passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mary Ann was born on January 6, 1940 in Belgium, WI to parents Raymond and Leona (Krell) Uselding. She married Robert “Buddy” Baer on October 4, 1969 and he preceded her in death on June 10, 1979. She is survived by her daughter, Michelle (Chris) Thomas of Lone Rock, WI; son Kevin (Lori) Baer of Fitchburg, WI; three brothers: Richard (Pat), Roger and Gary (Ellie) Uselding. A Funeral Mass will be held at noon on Saturday, December 18, 2004 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison, WI, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. She was an extraordinary woman who touched all of our hearts deeply and will be greatly missed by all.
Margaret Orsini

Madison - Margaret Ward Orsini, aged 88, died on Monday, December 13, 2004, at Harbor House, DeForest, Wisconsin. Margaret was born on March 18, 1916, in LeRoy, New York, the daughter of Harold and Florence (Chapman) Ward. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1937, with honors in zoology. At a time when few women entered scientific fields, she pursued graduate work in histology and embryology, earning a Ph.D from Cornell University in 1946. While an instructor in zoology at Drake University (1946-1949), she met Count Gian Napoleone Giordano Orsini, a professor of comparative literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They were married in 1949. At the University of Wisconsin she initially held a National Institute of Health (NIH) post-doctoral fellowship and later became a research associate funded by NIH and National Science Foundation grants. Joining the department of anatomy of the the UW Medical School as an assistant professor in 1969, she was promoted to associate professor in 1971 and became a full professor in 1973. She became professor emerita in 1988. Her research field was the reproductive cycle of hamsters, specifically the implantation of eggs in the uterine wall. Professor Orsini was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of numerous professional societies. She published more than forty professional articles in Science, The Journal of Heredity, The American Journal of Clinical Pathology, The American Journal of Anatomy, the Journal of Reproduction and Fertility, The Journal of Endocrinology, and others. She delivered lectures and participated in professional conferences and symposia in the United States, France, England and Italy. At home, Margaret enjoyed her pet cats, her motorcycle, and travel with Gian and, later with friends. She was a member of the Altrusa and the Madison Literary Club. Proud of her Yankee and Scottish heritage, she savored the fact that she had become a Roman Catholic and later, through her marriage, an Italian countess. Margaret Orsini was predeceased by her beloved husband Gian, who died in 1976, by her sisters Florence Ward West and Eleanore Doughty and her half-brothers Harold Sidney Ward and Alan M Ward; as well as by a dear friend, Margaret Josephine Prouty. She is survived by her cousin Ann Boyer of Madison; by several nieces and nephews, including Anne Bunting of Shelburne, Vermont, Martha Landsiedel of Glens Falls, New Yoek, and Frances Calvert of Barrington, Illinois; and by good friends including Kathleen Haygood, Jean McNary and Diane Coons. In Margaret's later years, as Alzheimer's disease took its toll, Tina Gomoll of Midwest Home Care provided devoted support and assistance. The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff members of Harbor House who care for Margaret during her years there. There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 20, 2004, at St. James Catholic Church, 1128 St. James court, Madison, followed by light refreshments. Private burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Roy Crapser

On Dec. 12, 2004, Roy “Bumpa” / “Pa” was welcomed into heaven by the loving arms of his little angels, his grandbabies ready to hear all of his hunting and fishing stories and all of the Packer and Badger victories. He was the first son of Walter and Dorothy (Kidd) Crapser. He was proud of his service in the U.S. Navy. Roy married Charlene Bindl on Feb. 23, 1963. Roy is survived by his wife Charlene, his children, Denise (Tony) Schroeckenthaler, Rory (Suzy) Crapser, Nicole (Mike) Moore, and Todd Crapser, his grandchildren, Heather, Ben, David, Caroline, Zachary, Andrew, Matthew, Elizabeth, Joseph, Dominic, Maryanna, Casey, Anna Mae, Ryan, Jacob Willie and his retrievers Thompson and Riley. He is also survived by his mother Dorothy Crapser, his brothers John (Judy), Wayne (Betty), and Gene (Carol) and his sister Mary Ellen (Ron) Larson. Roy is further survived by his mother-in-law Martha Bindl and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry (Karen) Bindl, Dorie (Jerry) Faber, Dan (Judy) Bindl, Dave Bindl, Mel (Maureen) Bindl, Mary (Greg) Anderson, Vicki (Duanne) Olson, Vicki Bindl, Marina (John) Flannery and LaDonna (Kevin) Radel; and many nieces; nephews and hunting buddies! Roy was preceded in death by his father, Walter Crapser; his paternal and maternal grandparents; his father-in-law, Victor Bindl; his brothers in law, Richard and Darrell Bindl; and his godson Scott Bindl. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 at 10 a.m. at ST. MARIA GORETTI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5405 Flad Ave., Madison with Father Jay Poster and Father Michael Moon con-celebrating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a Rosary and Chaplet at 7 p.m. at CRESS FUNERAL SERVICE, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. Stoughton - Dennis F. Schmit, age 45, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at Stoughton Hospital. He was born on September 22, 1959, at the Ft. Atkinson Hospital, a son of Clarence N. Schmit and Marilyn (Manning) Lein-Hagen. Dennis graduated from Stoughton High School and furthered his education at MATC in Computer Science. Dennis was a gentle, funny, kind person who loved the outdoors and spending time with family and friends. He was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, and friend. He was fascinated with computers and everything revolving around them. He is survived by his mother, Marilyn (Orrin) Lein-Hagen of Stoughton, his father, Clarence Schmit of Ft. Atkinson, 3 sisters, Deborah Giddley of McFarland, Denise (Jim) Mattke of Stoughton, Donna Schmit (Alan) of Mt. Horeb, nieces and nephews, Angela Giddley, Nichole Giddley, Jason Mattke, Shianna Schmit-Colvin. He is further survived by many aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his step-mother, Mary Schmit. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, December 26, 2004, at Olson-Holzhuter-Cress with Bill Wineke officiating. Madison - Shinji Yamamoto passed away quietly on Monday, December 20, 2004 at St. Marys Care Center at the age of 93. A longtime resident of Madison, Shinji was born in Oakland, California, the second oldest of nine brothers and three sisters. He helped support his family while earning a Bachelors and Masters degree in Architecture from the University of California-Berkeley. Forced into a relocation center for Japanese-Americans in Topaz, Utah during WWII, he found employment inland and was able to move his family, including his wife, Hifumi, and infant son, Steve, to Wisconsin. He spent most of his career working for the State of Wisconsin. He started at the bottom as a draftsman and worked his way up to become the State Architect. His most lasting contribution was his championship of the restoration and preservation of the State Capitol Building. He was a respected and beloved member of the Madison Baha’i Community for almost 60 years and was an avid golfer. He is survived by his daughter, JoAnn Yamamoto of Gurnee, IL; son, Y. Stephen Yamamoto of Florida; grandson, Michael Yamamoto of Boston, Mass.; and loving companions, Velvet and Ebony. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hifumi, in October 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 24, 2004 at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. Madison - Masayuki “Mas” Iyama, 88, died at Meriter Hospital on December 19, 2004, surrounded by his loving family. He approached each day with enthusiasm and determination, even as his body began to fail him. He exercised every day with the 4:30 am health club crowd until Nov 12th, when he could no longer walk on the treadmill. He was born on 2/15/16 in Berkeley, CA, the first son of Issei immigrants from Japan. He had an early interest in technology, and built his own crystal radio set while in high school. He held his ham radio license, first as W6QFU, then as W8WYK, for 66 years. He graduated from the University of California-Berkeley with a degree in electrical engineering, but WWII interrupted his career. He was sent with his family to an internment camp, where he met his love, Mabel Koba, to whom he was married for 56 years until her death in 2003. He was the successful owner of Universal Armature Corp. in Cleveland, Ohio, where their daughter was born. In 1987, he and Mabel moved to Madison to be with their family: their daughter, Christina Iyama-Kurtycz, M.D., now a pediatrician at UW-Madison, her husband, Dan Kurtycz, M.D., Professor of Pathology at UW-Madison, two wonderful grandsons, David and Jonathan, and his sister-in-law, Mary Koba. The paragraph of a life does not begin to tell the story of a remarkable man, who touched the lives and hearts of his many friends. He was an inspiration to all, a man who never gave in to his many physical ailments. He was the solid center of the family, who cared for everyone who needed him. He was kind and generous. His sweet smile will live in all our memories. The family wishes to thank his friends, Dick, Sandy, Norbert, Joan, Mike, Mike, Chris, Steve, Jack, Yosh, Pat, Sue, Ken and Dan’s dad Frank, who helped him so much over the years, as well as many others, who are included in our thankful hearts. STOUGHTON - Truman O. Femrite, age 87, died at his home on Sunday December 19, 2004. He was born November 30, 1917 in the Town of Dunkirk, a son of the late Andrew and Lena (Heggestad) Femrite. Truman graduated from the Hanerville Grade School and was lifelong farmer in the Town of Dunkirk. He for many years was an agent for the Albion Mutual Insurance Company and was a former President of the company. Truman served on the board of directors of the Albion Mutual Insurance Co. and the All Star Mutual Insurance Companies where he had been an agent for both companies. He was a former member of the A.S.C.S. in the town of Dunkirk. He was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Stoughton, a former member of the church council and board of trustees. Truman married the former Mary Long of Stoughton on November 24, 1943. He is survived by his wife Mary and his children Jeanne Gilbertson, Ruth Passehl, and Tom (Mary Lou) Femrite, all of Stoughton, his grandchildren; Jim Passehl, Andrew Femrite, Megan (Matt) Iverson, and Rachel Femrite, and a sister Georgia Belshaw of Stoughton. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother; Alwood Femrite. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church 310 Washington St. in Stoughton, Reverend Richard Halom officiating. Burial will be at Wheeler Prairie Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Tuesday, December 21, 2004 and after 10:00 AM at the Church. Truman had a great love for his family, and some of his happiest moments were spent with his family on the family farm and working the land that he loved.
