McFarland - Rosanne “Roz” L. Cook, age 69, died peacefully at her residence in McFarland on Monday, January 5, 2004, following a long battle with cancer. She was born in McFarland on November 16, 1934, a daughter of the late Harold and Violet (Pahl) Bearbower. Roz attended the McFarland schools, graduated from the Madison East High School in 1952, and furthered her education at Whitewater University. She was united in marriage to John Cook of Stoughton on December 4, 1954 at the McFarland Lutheran Church. Roz was formerly employed at the Department of Public Instruction in Madison and the Village of McFarland as a clerk for the Village Water Department and the Municipal Court. She was a member of the McFarland Lutheran Church, a former member of the Christian Nurture Circle of the church and the McFarland Lioness Club. She is survived by her husband, John; her children Debra Ann (Ernesto) Carrasco-Zanini of North Prairie and Dennis John (Ginger) Cook of McFarland; her grandchildren, Angela Carrasco-Zanini (fiance Keith Nerby), Damian Carrasco-Zanini, Ian Cook and Sydney Cook; her sister, Judy Crichton of McFarland; two nieces, Diana Crichton and Darcy (Joshua) Wexelbaum; and a sister-in-law, Harriette Rosenbaum. She was preceded in death by two brother-in-laws, David Crichton and William Rosenbaum. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 9, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at MCFARLAND LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5529 Marsh Road. Reverend Terry Peterson will officiate. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Monona. Friends may call at the funeral home in McFarland on Thursday, January 8, 2004 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to Hospice Care Inc. or the McFarland Lutheran Church. Roz was a die hard Chicago Cub fan, and a great sports grandmother who also enjoyed her hours spent quilting and tending her flower garden. The family would like to thank Dr. H.K. Parks, Dr. Mark Albertini of the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center, the entire Oncology Department nursing staff, UW Hospital Physical Therapy Department and Hospice Care Inc., especially Mary, Linda, Mandy, Tiffany, Beth and Cheryl. McFarland - John C. Stenjem, age 78, died at home on Sunday, January 4, 2004. John was born on February 23, 1925 in Stoughton a son of the late John and Julia (Jorgenson) Stenjem. John grew up in the Stoughton area and farmed in the Stoughton and McFarland area for many years. He married the former Betty Larson on September 24, 1966 at McFarland Lutheran Church. John worked for the University of Wisconsin Animal Science Department for 25 years and upon retiring worked as a grounds keeper at Olson-Holzhuter-Cress Funeral Home in McFarland. John was a member of McFarland Lutheran Church and was an usher for many years. John enjoyed meeting people and visiting with them. He will be dearly missed by: his wife of 37 years Betty; a sister- Mildred Ofsthum, Cottage Grove; and by many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. John was preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Tiedeman, 5 brothers- George, Oscar, Paul, Orrin, and Howard. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 7, 2004 at 11:00 am at McFarland Lutheran Church, 5529 Marsh Rd., McFarland, with Reverend Terry Peterson officiating. Burial will follow in Lower McFarland Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call (TODAY) on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the McFarland Funeral Home. Florence Runge

Stoughton - Florence Martha Runge, age 81, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 3, 2004. She was born on March 30, 1922 in Bensenville, IL, a daughter of the late Edward and Ida (Schulze) Siegrist. Florence was united in marriage to Harold Runge on June 1, 1940 in Bensenville. She was a member of Stoughton United Methodist Church. Florence was a loving mother and grandmother and was dedicated to her family. She is survived by her four children; Sharolyn (Fred) Sieber of Rogers, Arkansas, Patricia (Steven) Fortier of Glendale Heights, IL, Gerald Runge of Bensenville, IL, and Doreen Runge of McFarland, four grandchildren; Jeremy (Kate) Fortier, Jaime Fortier, Adam Runge, and Andrea Runge, two sisters; Helen Runge and Marion Runge, a brother; Fred Siegrist, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Harold. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at Stoughton United Methodist Church, 525 N. Lincoln, Stoughton. Friends may greet the family from 1:00 PM until the time of service on Tuesday at the church. A memorial fund has been established in Florence’s name.

Marvin Benjamin Ellis

Visitation times are: Sunday, February 1, 2004 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
STOUGHTON - Marvin Benjamin Ellis, age 76, died on Friday, January 30, 2004 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison. Marvin was born on June 24, 1927 in Monroe, Wisconsin a son of the late Albert and Martha (Auby) Ellis. He was a graduate of Monroe High School and served in the U.S. Army, European Theatre Occupation Forces in World War II. He was married in 1947 to A. Lorraine Hanson in Stoughton. Marvin was employed at Stoughton Cab and Body and also with the Township of Pleasant Springs for many years. Later he went to work for the University of Wisconsin, retiring in 1989. Lorraine and Marvin then moved to their cottage at Castle Rock Lake in the summer and wintered at La Feria, Texas. He was a member of Covenant Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of the V.F.W., and a member of the American Legion. Marvin is survived by: his wife- A. Lorraine; 4 children- Susan (Dennis) Gardner, Stoughton; Steven (Kathy) Ellis, Madison; Lori Ellis, Stoughton; Mark (Nancy) Ellis, Janesville; a brother- Albert (Esther) Ellis, Lakewood, Colorado; a sister- Mary (Jon) Langsdorf, Poynette; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by his Step Mother, Mary Ellis and by a grandson, Chad Ellis in 2002. Funeral services celebrating Marvin’s life will be held on Monday, February 2, 2004 at 11:00 am at Covenant Lutheran Church, 1525 N. Van Buren St., Stoughton with the Rev. Mark Petersen officiating. STOUGHTON/JEFFERSON - Marie E. Gericke, age 95, passed away peacefully into eternal life on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at the Nazareth House in Stoughton. She was born on January 26, 1908 in Jefferson, a daughter of the late Ernest and Barbara (Biedermann) Riedelbauch. Marie was a very spiritual woman, spending most of her life as a housekeeper for two priests. She was an organist and a sacristan for churches in Fort Atkinson and Jefferson. Marie is survived by two sons, Fr. Timothy Gericke of Janesville and Phillip (Maxine) Gericke of Watertown; two step-children, Barbara Cockran of Salinas, CA and Fred (Lee) Gericke of Zepherhills, FL; and 12 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick A. Gericke; a son, Carl R. Gericke; and eight brothers and sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the NAZARETH HOUSE CHAPEL, 814 Jackson Street, Stoughton. Fr. Timothy Gericke will officiate. Burial will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Jefferson. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the chapel. Elizabeth (Betty) Cora Ryan
(June 26th, 1916 - January 4th, 2011)
Elizabeth (Betty) Cora Ryan passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the Sun Prairie Health Care Center. She was born to Harry J. and Edith Odell Ryan on June 26, 1916 in Independence, Iowa.
Betty worked as an educator of many grades after her graduation from Oneida, Iowa High School and Lenox College, Iowa. She also graduated from Upper Iowa University attaining a degree in Home Economics and Dietary Agriculture. Her career as a licensed dietician began in 1945 working at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and ending in Wisconsin at the Mendota Mental Facility. In her retirement, Betty enjoyed Embroidery Guild, Eastern Star, White Shrine, and her service at the United Methodist Church. She volunteered her driving skills to anyone needing transportation.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, sisters and their spouses: Carmen (Alex) Gozzola, Wilma (Wilbur) Pogeman, Zineta (Carl) Hillers, brothers: William (Betty D.) Ryan, Theodore (Marie) Ryan, and her brother in law Edmund Schenck. She is survived by her sister: Jean Schenck, in addition to many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Betty will be dearly missed as she was the family historian who shared many stories with her wit and wisdom.
A memorial service celebrating Betty's life as a loving sister, aunt, cousin, and friend will be held at the Sun Prairie United Methodist Church at 1 PM on Sunday, February 6, 2011 with a visitation for one hour prior to the service. An inurnment will follow at a later date at the Sun Prairie Memory Gardens.

Allen, Viola Jean
(November 5th, 1918 - January 20th, 2011)
Waunakee/Madison - Viola Jean (Gentile) Allen, 92, passed away on Thurs., Jan. 20, 2011 at the Waunakee Manor Health Care Center. Viola was born on Nov. 5, 1918 to Frank and Teresa (Stella) Gentile in Hurley, WI. There she met and later married her High School sweetheart and best friend, Floyd Allen. After Floyd was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, Viola, Floyd and their family moved to Ironwood, Michigan, then Eagle River, WI and finally settled in Madison where they raised their five children. During that time, Viola was also teaching and substitute teaching on a part time basis as well as attending college to earn her state teaching certificate. She also developed and marketed several games for preschool children including "I Got It" alphabet game which was sold in numerous stores in Madison. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was known for her deep love of family, cheery and positive disposition, creative entrepreneurial endeavors, and incredible love of music and singing. Survivors include her children Frank (Ann) Allen of Waunakee, Elizabeth (Chris) Borreca of Houston, Texas, Rick (Cindy) Allen of Pardeeville and Mary (Scott) Woodward of Madison; twelve grandchildren, Carol, Amy, Molly, Laura, Jon, Ben, Anthony, Jenny, Jessie, Heather, Michelle, and Alesha. She was preceded in death by Floyd, her husband of 59 years; her oldest son, Tom; and daughter-in-law, Sue. A private burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial park. The family requests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association. The family also extends thanks and appreciation for the special care provided by the Waunakee Manor staff.
