Donald Thompson, 86, of Superior, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born in Superior on Dec. 8, 1911 to Samuel and Jane (Omberg) Thompson. He was a lifelong resident of Superior and graduated from Superior Central High School. Mr. Thompson had worked at the P&R Coal Docks, Berwin Coal Docks and for Great Lakes Storage as an electrician. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the Teamsters Union No. 346. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Leone Morland. He is survived by his wife, Grace; a son, Roger (Charlotte) of Superior; four grandchildren Paul (Cari) of Superior, Rebecca (Peter) Bachman of Madison, Sandy and Neil of Superior; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Thompson- Hegstrom Funeral Home, with Rev. Robert H. Stoskopf officiating. Visitation at the funeral home was one hour prior to the service. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Helen E. Nett, 91, Duluth, formerly of Superior, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, in St. Luke’s Hospital. She was born in Eveleth, Minn., on March 28, 1907 to Nels and Hilda (Pihlaja) Erickson. She graduated from the Virginia (Minn.) High School and attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Mrs. Nett was a homemaker and resided in Superior for most of her life. She was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and its Deborah Circle. She married Ambrose Nett on Sept. 3, 1935 in Markham, Minn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ambrose in 1975, two sisters, one brother and an infant child. She is survived by a son, Robert (Carol) Nett, Brainerd, Minn.; a daughter, Elizabeth (Daryl) Brenden, Eau Claire; a brother, Oswald (Ina) Erickson, Biwabik, Minn.; sisters, Elma Field, Duluth, Ida (John) Goodmanson, Portland, Oregon, and Katherine Kivela, Britt, Minn.; grandchildren, David (Patty) Nett, Linda (Michael) Farrell, Lee Michael and Keith Killoren; and great-grandchildren, Barbara Nett, Derek and Katie Farrell. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday in the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Pilgrim Lutheran Church with Rev. Waldo Johnson officiating. Interment icon will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Dorris Darling Langdon, 93, a resident of Trego, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at Terraceview Living Center in Shell Lake. She was born May 14, 1905 in Trego to George and Lydia (Mack) Pierce, and was a resident of the Minong area from 1929 until she moved to Trego in 1968. Mrs. Langdon was a member of the Open Door Chapel in Trego and had been a member of the Minong Presbyterian Church. Survivors include two sons, Ronald (Gloria) Langdon and Joseph (Bernadine) Langdon, both of Trego; three daughters, Velma (John) Kending, Trego, Mary Ellen (Don) Harper, Minong and Doris Jean (Robert) Bean, Trego; 28 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Euen Pierce, Trego. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Chester Tosterud, in 1928; her second husband, James Langdon, in 1977; a son, Chester Jr., three daughters, Iris, Frances and Allene; three sisters and six brothers. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Minong with Rev. Craig Nelson officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the Brown Funeral Home in Minong, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Minong.

Madison M. Groskreutz, four-months-old, of 6601 Main St., Duluth, died Friday, July 31, 1998, in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. Born March 23, 1998 in Duluth, she is survived by her parents, Susan Sutton and Monte Groskreutz, Duluth; two sisters, Theresa Helgeson, Waseca, Minn., and Lindsy Groskreutz, Superior; a brother, Tony Sutton, Denver, Colo.; paternal grandfather, William Groskreutz, Duluth; maternal grandparents, Sharon and Marcellus Sveine, Sartell, Minn.; and maternal great-grandmother, Mildred Cordes, New Ulm, Minn. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Carol Groskreutz. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home in Superior.

Viola Gray, widow of Cyril A. Gray Sr., died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998 in St. Francis Home in the Park at the age of 95. She was born in Duluth and came to Superior in 1925, residing here since that time. The former Viola Armstrong was a graduate of Young and Hursch Business College of Duluth and was employed in the Credit Department of the Minnesota Power and Light Co., before her marriage to Mr. Gray. She was co-owner of the C.A. Gray Insurance Agency and a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and its Altar Society. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1960 and her granddaughter, Janet Gray in 1981. Mrs. Gray is survived by her son, Cyril A. Gray Jr., three grandsons, James, Donald and Mitchel Gray, and three great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Mark and Michael Gray. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. James Tobolski, pastor, as celebrant. Interment icon will be in the family lot in St. Francis Cemetery. Pallbearers will be three grandsons, James, Donald and Mitchel Gray and John Traut. Ford S. Campbell Jr., 83, died Saturday, Aug. 1 at the Villa Marina Rehabilitation Center in Superior. He was born in Superior, living here his entire life. He attended Bryant School, Central High School and Wisconsin State College. Mr. Campbell served in the U.S. Air Force for two and one-half years during World War II. For 41 years he was associated with and managed Campbell Motors. During that time he was on the advisory board for Hudson Motor Car Co. and was active in the National Automobile Dealers Association. Before his death he was an active member of SCORE, the University of Wisconsin Symphonic Band, the Superior Rotary Club, Elks Club and a member of St. Francis Xavier Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emily and Ford Campbell Sr. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty; a son, Ford S. Campbell III and daughter-in-law, Kathleen, a granddaughter, Lauren and grandson, Ford S. Campbell IV, all of Lake Forest, Ill.; his special family, Gary, Carol and Craig Banker of Superior; a brother, Donald Campbell, sisters Emily (Bob) Demgen, Jeanne (George) Frodesen of Superior and Joyce (Philip) Schick of Davenport, Iowa; and nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. with visitation from 10-11 a.m. that day at St. Francis Xavier Church. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. A memorial is being established for St. Mary’s Hospice, SMDC Health System, Duluth. Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Lee Spencer Stout, 73, a lifetime resident of the Duluth/Superior areas and Barnes, Wis., died unexpectedly following surgery at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. She was educated in the Duluth Public School System, graduating from Stanbrook Hall and attending the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. In 1949 she married Fred E. Stout. She was a member of Junior League of Duluth, a board member of KDNW Christian Radio Station, volunteered at St. Mary's Medical Center, and was an active participant of the Christian Bible Study Fellowship. Some of her other interests included reading, music, and art. She was a member of Hammond Avenue Presbyterian Church in Superior and also attended the Great Lakes Gospel Church and the Eau Claire Lakes Evangelical Church. She is survived by her husband, Fred; her children, Dr. Sally E. Stout of Afton, Minn., Susan (Jack) Amadio of Duluth, and James C. Stout of Superior; grandchildren, Seth and Rachel Amadio; brothers James (Phyllis) Spencer of Duluth, Roger (Lucy) Spencer of Silver Bay, and Richard (Bev) Spencer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Great Lakes Gospel Church, 24th Avenue West and 5th Street, Duluth. There will be a private family burial. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Arrangements are by the Crawford Funeral Service in Duluth.

Dr. Leonard R. Wilson, Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History curator emeritus of micropaleontology and paleobotany, died at his home in Norman on Wednesday, July 15, 1998, after a long illness. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 235 West Duffy in Norman, Okla. Shortly before his death, Dr. Wilson and his wife Marian endowed the OMNH’s collection of paleobotany and micropaleontology with a gift of $100, 000. Wilson received three botany degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison: Bachelor of Philosophy, 1930; Master of Philosophy, 1932; and Doctor of Philosophy, 1936. He also studied at the University of Leeds, Scotland and conducted post doctorate work at Ohio State University and the University of California at Los Angeles. His career as an educator began in 1934 at Coe College, Iowa where Wilson was head of the department of geology until 1947 when he went to the University of Massachusetts in a similar capacity. In 1956, he became associated with New York University and the American Museum. He started at Oklahoma University in 1957 as a professor of geology. Wilson joined the Oklahoma Geological Survey and received the prestigious honor of being named the George Lynn Cross Research Professor of Geology and Geophysics in 1962. In 1973, Wilson was named curator of micropaleontology and paleobotany at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History where he contributed extensively to the museum's collections and to the university through teaching and research. Although he retired in 1977, Wilson continued to conduct research and scholarly work at his office in the museum. Wilson had been described as a pioneer in the field of palynology, the study of spores and pollen. He published over 200 scientific papers effectively demonstrating the relationships of plants to sediments and rocks through time. He actively advanced the idea that plant microfossils could become a powerful biostatigraphic tool. Wilson was the first man to perceive the common uses of palynology in oil exploration and served as a consultant to 17 major and independent oil companies during his career. Wilson received numerous academic honors and served in a multitude of professional posts. In 1972, he was elected to the Order of Mark Twain in recognition of his research in the Arctic and on Pleistocene deposits. Other members of the society include Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon and astronaut Neil Armstrong. In 1973, Wilson was awarded the Gunnar Erdtmann Medal for Palynology by the Palynological Society of lndia. Wilson was born July 23, 1906 in Superior. He is survived by his wife Marian; a son, Richard Graham Wilson of West Fork, Ark.; a daughter, Marcia Wilson Roe of Norman; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Ethel Johanna Kommes, 88, formerly of Superior, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998 at Lakeshore Lutheran Home in Duluth. Ms. Kommes lived in the family home at 6120 Ogden Ave., and graduated from Superior Central High School in 1928. She received a bachelor of education degree magna cum laude from Superior Teachers College in 1931, a master of philosophy degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1934 and her law degree cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law in 1953. Ms. Kommes was an English teacher and librarian for a school near Duluth. She then became assistant librarian at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. For three years, she served as librarian at the Duluth Bar Library. She was then named assistant state librarian at the State Capitol. She was appointed head librarian of the Hennepin County Law Library in October, 1948, retiring from that position in August, 1975 after 27 years of service to the library. Since that time she had resided in Edina, Minn., and for the past 10 years at St. Ann’s Senior Residence in Duluth. She moved to Lakeshore Lutheran Home in February of 1998. She is survived by one sister, Helen Kommes, Superior; two nephews, Richard Johnson, Lake Forest, Ill., and Robert Johnson, Golden, Colo.; one grandnephew; and one grandniece. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Greta Kommes; a brother, Carl E. Kommes, and two sisters, Edna Kommes and Ellen Johnson. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Downs Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Peterson of Bethel Lutheran Church officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Bertha M. Forslund, 90, Superior, died on Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, in the Southdale Health Care Center. She was born on Oct. 29, 1907, in Erie, Minn., the daughter of Anna (Lysne) and Christ Odegard, and was a longtime area resident. She lived in Iron River until 1955, then in Duluth until 1988 and since then living in Superior. Mrs. Forslund was employed many years as a housekeeper by various families in Duluth. Her memberships include Calvary Presbyterian Church in Iron River, American Association of Retired Persons, Order of Eastern Star and the Iron River Area Foundation. Survivors include two sons, Earl (Beverly) Forslund, Iron River, and LeRoy (Gertrude) Forslund, Superior; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Oscar Odegard, Duluth; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto in 1987, her parents, Chris and Anna Odegard; two brothers, Clarence and Floyd Odegard; and two sisters, Alma Pulliam and Melvina Bauer. Pallbearers will be Chris, Jack, William and Dennis Forslund, Mary Williams and Bonnie McAreavy. Visitation at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Iron River will be one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral on Wednesday. Louise V. Plasch, 70, of 3018 N. 21st St., died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at her residence. Born Dec. 23, 1927 in Superior, she was a lifelong city resident. She was formerly active in bowling, softball and basketball circles in the Superior area. Mrs. Plasch was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” in April of 1992, her parents, Jacob and Victoria Wasserman and two brothers, Joseph and Edward Wasserman. Surviving are three daughters, Dia (Timothy) Peterson, Minneapolis, and Sharon (Darrell Gundy) Plasch and Terri (Mark) Sutherland, both of Superior; three sons, Harvey Plasch, Duluth, and Roger Plasch and Ron (Theresa) Plasch, both of Superior; one daughter-in-law, Terry Plasch, Duluth; two grandsons, two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Fr. George Votruba, pastor of Holy Assumption Catholic Church, will officiate, with interment to be in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Richard Plasch Sr., Joe Plasch, Maren Plasch, Richard Plasch Jr., Clifford Plasch, Mark Wasserman and Robert Callery. Joseph G. Paulus, 78, Chetek, formerly of Superior, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at Barron Memorial Medical Center. He was born Nov. 17, 1919, in Superior, to Harry and Alice (Meteraud) Paulus and was employed for many years by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad as an engineer. Paulus moved to Chetek in July 1990 from Superior. He and the former Theresa Hudacek were married Sept. 27, 1941, in Superior. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of a VFW Post in South Range. He enjoyed visiting at the Chetek VFW, pontooning, fishing, working in his yard and gardening, and had been a hunter. In addition to his wife, Theresa, of Chetek, he is survived by seven children, Joseph E. Paulus, Manitowoc, Michael Paulus, Eau Claire, Elizabeth (Roger) Ogren, Hillsdale, JoLynn Gotelaere of Connecticut, Steven Paulus of St. Paul, Donna (Tony) Pauley, Denver, Colo., and Gary (Jodanna) Paulus of Superior; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, David (Mary) Paulus of Superior; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Gloria and Shirley, and three brothers, Dick, Jim and Jerry. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Burnham-Ours Funeral Home in Chetek, where a rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m. Visitation resumes Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral Mass in St. Boniface Catholic Church, Chetek. Warren Allan Monsrud, 45, of Solon Springs, formerly of Biwabik, Minn., died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at Hayward Area Memorial Hospital. He was born in Roseau, Minn., to Howard and Mary (Walsh) Monsrud on June 30, 1953. He graduated from Horace Mann High School in Biwabik and attended four plus years of vo-tech. On May 5, 1979, he married Janice Lahti at the Sand Lake Chapel in Britt. They moved to Alaska where he worked as a plumber. They returned to Minnesota and he worked in maintenance. In 1994, they moved to Solon Springs, where he worked as a plumber for Bergemann Plumbing. In 1998, he joined the Building and Common Laborers Union Local 1050 and was employed by Gregory and Cook, then by Murphy Brothers, both of which were working on the pipeline. He attended Northwoods Community Church in Solon Springs. He is survived by his wife, Janice; parents, Howard and Mary Monsrud of Biwabik; brothers, Michael (Sue) Monsrud of Bagley, Minn., Kerry (Sharon) Monsrud of St. Paul Park, Minn., Sheldon Monsrud of Flagstaff, Ariz., Lee (Kathy) Monsrud of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Mark (May) Monsrud of Renton, Wash.; a sister, Sheryl (Rick) Williams of Buffalo, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Biwabik. Fr. Frank Perkovich will be celebrant. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. with parish prayers at 7 p.m. at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora, Minn., and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. August DeVogel, 74, Superior, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at Southdale Health Care Services in Superior. Born Jan. 24, 1924, in Wentworth, he was a graduate of former Superior East High School. DeVogel had been employed as a Great Lakes seaman with Columbia Steamship Lines and more recently Cleveland Cliff Steamship Lines for many years before his retirement. He was a member of Superior Eagles Aerie No. 80 and the Belgian Club in Allouez. Surviving are his wife, Marge; three sons, Jody DeVogel, Dennis DeVogel and Robert DeVogel, all of Superior; three daughters, Anna DeVogel, Superior, Tabatha DeVogel, South Range, and Denise DeVogel, Superior; two stepsons, Todd (Sandy) Chevalier and Scott (Julie) Chevalier, both of Superior; two stepdaughters, Cheryl (Michael) Peterson, Superior, and Carrie (Peter) Brig, in Florida; a brother, Joe DeVogel, Superior; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home. The Rev. Tom Miller will officiate. Betty L. Borzick, 87, formerly of 1100 Weeks Ave., died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at St. Francis Home in the Park. Born May 25, 1911, in Superior, she lived most of her life in Milwaukee and Superior. A homemaker, she was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King. She had been a member of the former St. Louis Catholic Church and was a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court No. 1190. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, great-great-great-nieces and great-great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, in September of 1970; one brother, Michael Charles; and three sisters, Agnes Moen, Margaret Altman and Helen Toboleski. Visitation begins at 6 p.m. Monday with a Catholic vigil service at 6:30 p.m. at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Cathedral of Christ the King. Fr. Andrew Ricci will be celebrant, with interment to be in Calvary Cemetery. Warren D. Johnson, 75, Lake Minnesuing, formerly of Superior, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, in Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center, Hawthorne. Born July 12, 1923, in Superior, he lived here most of life. He graduated from the former Superior Central High School and attended business college in Duluth and the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Johnson had been employed as a grain accountant for more than 30 years by General Mills, Inc. He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Nebagamon, the Superior Elks No. 403 and Duluth Musicians Association. A drummer, he played with many well-known bands, including the Hungry Five. For the past nine years he and his wife were Arizona “snowbirds.” Surviving are his wife Marcie Willis Johnson; four sons, Mark (Julie) Johnson, Superior, Dean (Barb) Johnson, St. Paul, Michael (Debbie) Johnson, Orlando, Fla., and Brian (Kristin) Johnson, Fond du Lac; four daughters, Diane (Larry) Larson, Superior, Mary (Dale) Thomson, Superior, Barbara (Mike) Kozak, Chicago, and Christina Johnson, Madison; two stepsons, Gary Willis, Lake Nebagamon, and Robert (Joni) Willis, Phoenix; five step-daughters, Linda Moreau, Coon Rapids, Minn., Arlene (Jeff) Farmer, Minneapolis, Patti (Bobby) Glaesner, Glendale, Ariz., Lori (Scott) Rabideaux, Lake Nebagamon, and Kelly (Richard) Warn, Lake Nebagamon; a brother, Bill (Florence) Johnson, in Ohio; a sister, Meredith (Ben) Lugowski, in Florida; 37 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Donna Johnson, 66, of 801 N. 8th St., died Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hawthorne. She was born July 25, 1932, in Superior, and had been a lifelong Superior resident. A member of Hope Congregational Church, she was active in charity work for the March of Dimes, where she was nominated to the March of Dimes Hall of Fame for her work. Surviving are two sons, Glenn A. Tinker, Santa Ana, Calif., and Edward (Corrine) Forrestal, Duluth; two daughters, Roxyanne (Brian Sr.) Newman, Park Falls, and Iva Jean (Dan) Thomas, Rochester, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Iva Perkins, Superior; and two brothers, Wally (Betty) Tribbey, Superior, and Art Tribbey, Ramona, Calif. Her husband, Robert Johnson, died in March 1998. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Calvin Tribbey. The funeral will be at noon Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Anderson officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Josephine I. Cole, 85, Bayport, Minn., formerly of Superior, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, in Lakeview Hospital, Stillwater, Minn. She was born June 14, 1913, in Fort William, Ontario, and was a former Superior resident. Surviving are a son, David (Sharon) Cole, Stillwater; two granddaughters, Keri Duffy and Stephanie Cole, both of Stillwater; three great-grandsons; a sister, Dorreen Thorp, St. Louis, Mo.; and a brother, Jim Lanswick, Superior. She was preceded in death by her husband Edgar in 1996. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Downs Funeral Home, with visitation from 1:30-2 p.m. The Rev. Scott Ludford of Concordia Lutheran Church will officiate, with interment to be in Riverside Cemetery.

Lyle E. Bosley, 63, a resident of Las Vegas, Nev., and formerly of Superior and Gordon, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, in Las Vegas, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Superior and lived in Gordon until he joined the U.S. Air Force. He had been employed as a cement finisher, carpenter and mechanic in Las Vegas. Survivors include his wife, Carol; five sons, Lyle Jr., Lonnie, John, Tom and Tim; one daughter, Brenda; seven grandchildren; a brother, Albert (Darlene) Bosley, Solon Springs; and two sisters, Ruth Manter, Yucca Valley, Calif., and Margaret (Tom) Biscobing of Gordon. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph, his parents, William and Della BosIey, and a brother, Ben. Burial will be in Veterans Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada.
