Helen Vengrin
Helen Vengrin, 81, a longtime Superior area resident, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, in Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center in Superior. Born March 9, 1917, in Bennett, she had worked as a custodian at the former St. Adalbert’s and St. Francis schools here for many years. More recently, she was employed as a school crossing guard in Superior for many years prior to retiring. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the former St. Adalbert’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed flowers and gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, in 1988, and by four brothers, Arthur, Harry, Ralph and Algot Cleveland. Surviving are a son, Thomas L. (Sharyn) Vengrin, Superior; a daughter, Carolyn (Michael) Schafter, Port Washington, Wis.; two brothers, Clarence Cleveland, in Florida, and Ernie Cleveland, Minneapolis; a sister, Elaine “Toni” Kivi, Duluth; four grandchildren, Andrew Vengrin, Superior, Kory Vengrin, Chicago, and Joe and Carl Schafter, both of Port Washington; and two great-grandchildren, Hillary and Matt Vengrin. Visitation begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, where a Catholic vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. James Tobolski as celebrant. Interment icon will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Carl, Joe and Mike Schafter, Andy Vengrin and Roy Schuman.

Leo B. Hansen
Leo B. Hansen, 89, of 1311 Faxon St., a longtime Duluth and Superior resident, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born Aug. 27, 1909 in Duluth, the son of Anna (Fossen) and John Hansen. He grew up and attended schools in Duluth, graduating from Duluth Central High School. He was employed as a boiler inspector for over 35 years by the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company, retiring in 1974. He was united in marriage to Mae Johnson on March 26, 1938, in Duluth, and they recently celebrated 60 years of married life. Hansen was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Superior, Trinity Masonic Lodge No. 282 of Duluth, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry of Duluth, and the AAD Temple Shrine where he served as president of the Oddmen unit. He was also a member of the Duluth-Superior Harbor Club and United Commercial Travelers. He is survived by his wife, Mae C. of Superior; one son, Alan Hansen, Tucson, Ariz.; one daughter, Mary Ellen (Roger) Ashley, Palo Alto, Calif.; two granddaughters, Ellen and Rhoda Ashley; one brother, Norman (Mary Jane) Hansen, one sister, June (Robert) Alsop, and a sister-in-law, Lillian Hansen, all of Duluth; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Alvin and Erling Hansen, and one sister, Gertrude Hansen. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home and continues on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral at Concordia Lutheran Church. The Rev. Scott Ludford will officiate, with interment to be at Park Hill Cemetery, Duluth. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Concordia Lutheran Church.

Michael A. Checchin
Michael A. Checchin, 15, of 10576 Wisconsin Ave., Hayward, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at his residence following a lengthy battle with a brain tumor. He was born Jan. 27, 1983, in LibertyvilIe, Ill., and was a sophomore at the Hayward High School. He is survived by his parents, Jenny Checchin and Jason Crawford of Hayward and Russell Checchin and Marsha Little of Superior; one brother, Jake Checchin; one sister, Anne Stroening of Hayward, two nieces and one nephew; grandparents Barbara Checchin, Benson, Ariz., and Phil and Joan (Stroening) Semar of Mount Prospect, Ill. He was preceded in death by one brother, Russell "RJ" Checchin, in 1991. Private family services will be Wednesday in Hayward.

Carl M. Saari
Carl M. Saari, 81, Cloquet, formerly of Maple, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, in Cloquet Community Memorial Nursing Home. He was born Aug. 4, 1917, in Maple, the son of John and Mary Saari. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard, serving as an engineer on the Joe S. Morrow. He also worked as a stationary engineer on the ore carriers and later was a foreman and retired from Murphy Oil Corp. He and the former Florence Emelia Carlson Reynolds were married in 1959. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Esko and a former member of Faith Lutheran Church in Maple. He is survived by a son, Ted Saari of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; a daughter, Darlene (Al) Picconatto of Minot, N.D.; a step-son, Carter (Joyce) Reynolds of Williamsburg, Iowa; a step-daughter, Karen (Curt) Dahlmeier of Moose Lake, Minn.; a sister, Hilda Lund of California; one brother, Evert Saari of California; 10 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and four step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Florence on April 19, 1998; nine brothers and sisters, and his children's mother, Ruth (Bergquist Saari) Nolte. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Esko. Spring interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Carlton. Arrangements are by Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.

Opal B. Anderson
Opal B. Anderson, 91, of Stevens Point, formerly a longtime resident of Brule, died Saturday evening, Dec. 19, 1998, in the River Pines Nursing Center in Stevens Point. She was born on Oct. 7, 1907, in Brule, the daughter of Viola (Lee) and Roscoe Wann. She grew up and attended school in Brule. After graduating from Central High School in Superior, she attended Superior State Normal School. She was employed as a postal clerk for the Brule Post Office and served as the postmaster for many years before retiring. In May of 1930, she was united in marriage to Arthur Anderson in Duluth. She was a member of the Brule Presbyterian Church and its Ladies Aid. She lived in Brule for most of her life, moving to Stevens Point a few years ago. She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Wollmer of Stevens Point; three grandchildren, Eric (Keli) Wollmer, Steven (Ann) Wollmer and Susan (Mark) Trapp; one great-granddaughter, Greta Ann; a sister, Dorothy Hall of Superior; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Arthur; one brother, Thomas "Ben"; and two sisters, Helen and Eva. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. to the 11 a.m. funeral at the Brule Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David Heyser officiating. Interment icon will be in Brule Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home in Superior.

Tryntje Marie “Tina” (Sytsma) Erickson
Tryntje Marie “Tina” (Sytsma) Erickson, 83, Washburn, formerly of Cornucopia, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at Northern Lights Manor Nursing Home, Washburn. She was born Oct. 2, 1915, in Herbster, the daughter of Peter Lucas and Maritje (Vanderplatts) Sytsma. She graduated from Port Wing High School in 1934 and married Gust Erickson on Aug. 5, 1937, in Washburn. Her passions were family, fishing, painting and reading. She and her husband, Gust, after his retirement, worked together woodcarving and painting. She was a member of the Herbster Community Church, Cornucopia Community Club, and volunteered actively in the area. She is survived by one daughter, Glenda Erickson, Bayfield; a son, Rollie (Barbara) Erickson, Washburn; three granddaughters, Susan (Larry) Erickson Boehm, St. Cloud, Minn., Jenine (Price) Taylor, Snohomish, Wash., and Kristen Stycket, Edmonds, Wash.; one grandson, Ward (Susan) Erickson, Hudson; one great-granddaughter, Natalie Ann Boehm; two great-grandsons, Kyle Patrick Boehm and Justin Eric Taylor; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gust, on Oct. 26, 1985; a sister, Doris (John) Erickson; and one brother, Lucas (Helen) Sytsma. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Cornucopia, with the Rev. Jerry Lamb officiating. Spring interment will take place in Herbster Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Bratley Funeral Home, Washburn. Memorials may be made to the Cornucopia Community Club.

Idalene E. Kitchen
Idalene E. Kitchen, 89, of Oakridge Care Center, Union Grove, formerly of Brule and Superior, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at the care center. She was born Oct. 7, 1909, in Janesville, the daughter of Matt Otto and Sarah Ethel (Burhans) Burhans. She married Maurice W. Kitchen on Feb. 8, 1941, in Milton. He died Aug. 21, 1982. She had lived in Janesville, Brule, and Superior until moving to Marinette in 1968. She then moved to Brodhead in 1972, back to Janesville and then to Union Grove in 1990. She had been a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Ladies Auxiliary at Grace Lutheran Church. She had also been a member of the Homemakers in Superior. Survivors include two daughters, Karen (Marvin) Sax, Union Grove, and Maureen (James C.) Asbury, Superior; a sister, Marjorie W. Schwartz, Superior; a brother, Robert Kent Burhans of Brule; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Julie Ann, in infancy; five brothers, LeLand, DeWitt, Max, Ross and Ken; and a nephew, Robert Warren Schwartz. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home in Brodhead, with the Rev. Amos Shimko officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Polnasek-Daniels Funeral Home, Union Grove, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and from 1 p.m. Wednesday until the time of service at Newcomer Funeral Home, Brodhead.

Dorothy Adams
Dorothy Adams, 88, formerly of Southdale Health Care Services, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. She was born on Oct. 22, 1910, to Magnus and Charlotte Peterson in Superior. She attended Superior schools and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She moved to New Jersey where she became the executive secretary for the vice president of Johnson and Johnson in New Brunswick, N.J. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward in 1987; brothers Ben, Art, Bill, Stanley and Abbey; and sisters, Marion England and Gertrude Peterson. She is survived by a sister, Luella Pichett of Davenport, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held today at 6 p.m. in the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home with Rev. Waldo Johnson officiating. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Violet (Pappelis) Dretzka
Violet (Pappelis) Dretzka, Cudahy, Wis., formerly of Superior, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998. She attended the former Superior East High School and Superior State Teachers College. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Katherine Pappelis. Surviving are her husband, Hubert; a son, Gary (Donna) Dretzka of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Joan (Dr. Daniel) Batle, Evanston, Ill., and Diane (Paolo) Fellin, Brussels, Belgium; six grandchildren, John and Natasha Dretzka, Sylvia Fellin and Natalie, Nick and Jordi Batl; a brother, Dr. Aristotle (Kathryn) Pappelis; and her family in Superior/Duluth: Francis and Thanie Petrich, Nicholas and Maria Maxim, the family of the late Clarence and Irene Parenteau and Michael (Janice) Hodgis. A memorial service was held Sunday. Arrangements were handled by the Schramka Funeral Home in Cudahy.

Emil Koski Jr.
Emil Koski Jr., 72, a longtime resident of Superior’s East End, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, in his home. He was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Superior and was a lifelong city resident. He graduated from the former East High School, served in U.S. Army during World War II, was a carman with the former Great Northern and more recently Burlington Northern, retiring after many years of service. He was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine, in 1991. Surviving are three sons, Greg Koski, Superior, Larry (Julie) Koski, Superior, and Jeff (Dorene) Koski, River Falls; a brother, Wayne (Peggy) Koski, Lake Nebagamon; a sister, Beverly Bartholomew, Superior; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. until the 2:30 p.m. funeral in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Rev. Mark Holmes of Darrow Road Wesleyan Church will officiate.

Leo J. Szybnski
Leo J. Szybnski, 65, Superior, died on Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at Beverly Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Duluth and had been a longtime Duluth-Superior resident. He was employed by Duluth Culvert and Diamond Tool until retiring in 1972. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and received a combat purple heart. Survivors include his wife, Marion, of Superior; step-sons Robert Buerger, Superior, and Michael Buerger, Hudson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Visitation will be Wednesday in the William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral. Fr. Daniel Dahlberg will officiate and burial will be at the Polish Cemetery in Duluth.

Judith L. Holmberg
Judith L. Holmberg, 50, of 1113 Lincoln St., died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, in St. Mary’s Medical Center after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born Feb. 3, 1948 in Grand Rapids, Minn., she had resided in Superior since 1976. She retired in January of this year as a cosmetic clerk at Walgreen’s Drug Store. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and a former Girl Scout and 4-H leader. Surviving are five daughters, Bonnie (Pat) Osaben, Ely, Minn., Lori Holmberg, Minneapolis, and Sonja (Brian) Jones, Diane Holmberg and Elaine Holmberg, all of Superior; a son, David Holmberg, Ironwood, Mich.; six grandchildren; her parents, Milton and Linda Kannas, Bovey, Minn.; a brother, John (Betty) Kannas, Bovey; and a special friend, Dennis Jokinen, Superior. She was preceded by her husband Dennis in 1994. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Stoskopf officiating. Interment icon will be in the Summit Cemetery. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. Gladys Lee
Gladys Lee, 95, of 1612 N. 37th St., died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Sept. 11, 1903, in Stanley, Wis., and resided in Superior most of her life. She was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Surviving are three daughters, Dorothy Mae (Herbert) Lee, Superior, Delores Jane (Ralph) Isberg, Grand Rapids, Minn., and Kay Anita (Lyle) Severin, South Range; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Rudolph “Rudy” Johnson, to whom she was married Feb. 17, 1923, her second husband, Chester Lee, to whom she was married June 13, 1936, a son, Glenn R. Johnson, a grandson, Danny Severin, and four brothers and seven sisters. A private funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home with Rev. David Eckman of Pilgrim Lutheran Church officiating. Interment icon will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Dennis E. Howes
Dennis E. Howes, 51, of 914 Tower Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, in his residence. Born Nov. 27, 1947, in Superior, he was a lifelong resident. Howes had been employed as a security guard by Black Bear Casino in Carlton. He was previously employed by Russ’ Cleaning and also had been a seaman on the Great Lakes. He was a volunteer at local schools teaching Indian education. Surviving are two daughters, Stacy (Jason) Kirkwood, Superior, and Hannah Howes, Superior; five sons, Daniel, Stephen, Travis and Troy Howes and Dennis Howes Jr., all of Superior; three grandchildren; his mother, Elaine Howes, Superior; five sisters, Bonnie Lehner, Kathryn Howes, Debra Howes, Laurie (John) Verlooy and Yvonne O’Campo, all of Superior; four brothers, William Howes, Burnsville, Minn., and Darrell, David and Gene Howes, all of Superior; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral of Christ the King with the Rev. Daniel Dahlberg as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Darrell, David, William and Danny Howes, Steve Marksman and John Verlooy. Honorary pallbearer will be Andy Dickenson. Ferdinand A. Post
Ferdinand A. Post, 93, a longtime resident of Superior's East End, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. Born Sept. 27, 1905 in Altenberge, Germany, he came to the United States as a skilled shoemaker and had a long career as a sales person, shipyard worker and the co-owner of Bingham Hardware for many years before retiring in 1972. Post enjoyed his family, community, country, his church parish, home and his garden. He was sensitive to the environment and especially loved the Brule River. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society and also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by one son, John (Patricia) Post, Bayfield; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Ron) Theriault, St. Paul, Minn.; one brother, Hubert Post, Perham, Minn.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Marge Ahrens, Topeka, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, in 1994, a son, Ferdinand Post, four brothers, Alphonse, Herman, Heinrich and Felix Post, a sister, Anna, and two sisters-in-law, Mary Lederman and Martha Lederman. Visitation will be Sunday from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church where a Scripture service is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday in the church with Fr. James Tobolski, pastor, as celebrant. Interment icon will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Pallbearers for the service will be Edmund, Joel, Jerold, Christopher and Patricia Post, Brandon Olson, Larry Helland and Andrew Theriault. Clarence "Vic" Heckman
Clarence "Vic" Heckman, 73, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, in Superior. Born Nov. 11, 1925 in Superior, he had lived in Superior most of his life before moving to Gordon in 1991. He was employed as an electrical supervisor for over 23 years before his retirement in 1985. He was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church, the United Commercial Travelers #333 and had been a member of the original Sheriff’s Rescue Patrol. He was a ham radio operator with the call sign N9ROB and was a member of the Good Sam R.V. Radio Club, the Duluth Radio Club, and the Star of the North Good Sam Chapter. He had served in the Navy and the Sea Bees for eight years and was active in the Navy Reserve for over 15 years. Survivors include his wife, Janet (Kunert); one daughter, Karen (Michael) Johnson, Forest Lake, Minn.; three sons, Greg (Pat) Heckman, Menasha, Wis., Richard "Rick" (Laura) Heckman, Superior, and Paul (Shirley) Heckman, Superior; five grandchildren, Suzanne and Andrew Johnson, Matthew LaValley and Hannah and Madeleine Heckman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Newella (Paradis) Heckman. Visitation begins Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home and will continue Monday in the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral there. Rev. H. Duane Aslyn of Pioneer Parish will officiate. Rose F. Hiltunen
Rose F. Hiltunen, 87, formerly of Superior, died Monday, Dec. 21,1998, in Cedarburg, Wis. She was born Feb. 3, 1911 to John and Marie (Seme) Rebol in Troy Location near Eveleth, Minn., and was a 1929 graduate of Eveleth High School. She later attended Duluth Normal School and taught in Eveleth and in one-room schools throughout northern St. Louis County. She was a tuberculosis survivor, having lived in Nopeming from 1936 until 1939. She married Leo P. Hiltunen June 1, 1943. They and their family lived in Tower, Eveleth, Brimson, Toivola and Brule, where she assisted her husband in managing cooperative stores. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1966, and continued to teach for the Northwestern School District in Maple until her retirement in 1974. She was a women's club and 4-H leader and member. She was also a member of groups for retired teachers in St. Louis and Douglas counties. She was an accomplished baker, cook and gardener. She enjoyed crocheting and other handwork, reading, doing crossword puzzles and playing cards, cribbage and Scrabble. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; a son, Jack; a sister, Mollie; a brother, Henry; and her parents. Survivors include daughters, Nancy (Harold) Follis of Grafton, Wis., and Carol (Tom) Ouellette of Duluth; a daughter-in-law, Wendy Hiltunen of Marshfield; grandchildren, Doug, Tom (Jenny) and Andy Follis, Sherrie (Greg) Nackel, Maria and Sara Ouellette and Katie Hiltunen; sisters, Marie (Vince) Luke and Marge Redding of Florida, Frances Kozar, Jennie Novak, and a brother, John (Elsie) Rebel, all of Cleveland; and other brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held in Grafton. Committal will be at a later date at the Town Lake Vermilion Cemetery. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Robert B. Marshall, 83, of Superior, died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, in his home. He was born Feb. 24, 1915, to James and Mary Marshall in Mountain Iron, Minn. He lived in Duluth from 1920 until moving to Superior in 1971. He worked for Northern Pacific Railroad, Coolerator Plant, Duluth Malting Brewery, and retired from Diamond Tool, where he worked in the finishing department. He attended St. James Catholic School and was a former member of St. James Catholic Church. He was self taught and accomplished in playing the guitar and mandolin. He was very knowledgeable in antique and western memorabilia. He is survived by a daughter, Linda Pearson of Minneapolis; two sons, Robert D. (Diane) and Gerald R (Kathy), both of Duluth; two sisters, Pat (Ed) Boyer of West Lake Village, Calif., and Betty Gagne of Duluth; three brothers, Joseph R. (Gerry), John F. and Louis J. (Rita), all of Duluth; eight grandchildren, Kelly, Kerrick, Melissa, Gina, Melanie, Robbie, Kristin and Matthew; a great-granddaughter, Raeanna; and a special friend, Betty Klasnya of Duluth. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Grand and Jane Spehar; a granddaughter, Heather Akemon; and a great-granddaughter, Cerreanna. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Bell Brothers Chapel, Duluth, with wake services at 6 p.m. The funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church, Duluth, with the Rev. Charles Flynn officiating. Interment icon will be in Oneota Cemetery.

John J. Oswald
John J. Oswald, 84, West Allis, formerly of Superior, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998. He is survived by his wife, the former Lucille Zemlo; three daughters, Judythe Cooley, Alyce (William) Meyer and Mary Anne (William) Fischer; two sons, John Z. (Jennifer) Oswald and Thomas J. Oswald; two sisters, Louise Oswald and Pauline (Evan) Giese; two brothers, Herman T. (Marion) Oswald and Al (Theresa) Baumann; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. A Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Mary Queen of Heaven Church, 106th and W. Lincoln Ave., West Allis, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are by Schaff Funeral Home in West Allis.

Leona Franzen
Leona Franzen, 90, of 1227 Grand Ave., died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at her residence. She was born Aug. 10, 1908, in Hines, Minn., and had been a longtime Superior resident. She worked for Jeno’s Inc. in Duluth for more than 25 years. She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King and the Indianhead Handicap Club in Superior. Surviving are a son, Herbert (Irene) Franzen, Maple Grove, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, June Casper, Superior, and Lou Golden, Portland, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, and three sons, Gerald, Eldore and Carl. A Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in Cathedral of Christ the King with the Rev. Daniel Dahlberg as celebrant. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, with a 6:30 p.m. Scripture service at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim, Dave, Steve and Ken Franzen.

James Arthur Vandenberg
James Arthur Vandenberg, 51, of 2812 N. 21st St., died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. He was born Nov. 1, 1947, in Prairie Farm, Wis., and resided in Superior most of his life. Vandenberg attended the former Ericsson Elementary School and graduated from Superior Central High School in 1965 and attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He was employed as a data collection technician with the U.S. Postal Service in Duluth, beginning his career there on July 18, 1971. He was a member of Zoar Lutheran Brethren Church and the Great Northland Local of American Postal Workers Union. He served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam. Surviving are his wife, Karen E. “Skippy” Prochazka Vandenberg; two daughters, Kammie (John) Eck, Duluth, and Lori Jean Vandenberg, Superior; three grandchildren, Justin, Matthew and Katie; his parents, Iva D. and Lloyd C. Vandenberg, Superior; a brother, Larry (Connie) Vandenberg, Superior; three sisters, Judy (Bill) Williams, Vadnais Heights, Minn., Carol (Russ) Bottjer, Poway, Calif., and Donna Ashcroft of Carlton, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Kelly Vandenberg, Valdosta, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas “Van” S. Vandenberg, on Oct. 27, 1996. Visitation began at 5 p.m. Sunday at Downs Funeral Home, where the funeral took place at 11 a.m. Monday. Interment icon was in Greenwood Cemetery. The Rev. Jerome Elness of Redeemer Lutheran Church of Duluth and the Rev. Daniel Dahlberg of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church in Superior co-officiated. The eulogy was presented by Dennis Hughes. Active pallbearers were Bill Boldt, David “Jake” Jacobson, Walter Coder, Dave Watczak, Kim Peterson and Rich Olson. Honorary pallbearers were active and retired members of the U.S. Postal Service in Duluth.

Irene E. Ukkola
Irene E. Ukkola, 84, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Oct. 28, 1914, in Fort Frances, Canada, she was a lifelong Maple resident. She was employed for many years as a nurse’s aide by Middle River Health Facility and was previously a teacher’s aide at Lake Nebagamon Grade School. She also farmed in the Maple area for many years with her husband, Ted, who died in 1976. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Gladys Foltz, in 1981; a son, James Ukkola, in 1997; and a granddaughter, Tammi Jo Ukkola. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia (George) Johnson, Maple; three sons, Gerald (Jeanette) Ukkola, Poplar, Arnold “Sonny” (Clara) Ukkola, Maple, and David (Debbie) Ukkola, Virginia, Minn.; a brother-in-law, William Ukkola, Maple; 16 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. The funeral is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Downs Funeral Home, where visitation begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Pastor Gerald Presuhn of Christ Lutheran Church in Superior will officiate. Interment icon will be at Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery in Maple. Pallbearers will be George Johnson, Gregory Ukkola, Carlos Vasquez, David Munger, William Abrahamzon and Joe Premo.

Nicholas Maryanovich
Nicholas Maryanovich, 83, a longtime resident of Superior’s East End area, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born April 4, 1915 in Campbell, Ohio, where he graduated from high school. He was employed as a musician and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church in South Superior. Surviving are two nephews, Lanny Maryanovich and Michael (Pamela) Maryanovich, both of Superior; and one niece, Susan (Norman) Johnson, Cloquet, Minn. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Fr. Gabriel Baltes, OSB, will officiate, with interment to be in Calvary Cemetery.

Myron J. “Mike” Ronding
Myron J. “Mike” Ronding, 71, 1111 N. 16th St., died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. Born Aug. 23, 1927 in Duluth, he resided in Superior the past 25 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force and had been employed as branch manger for Skelgas for 32 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior Elks Lodge No. 409 and Superior Moose Lodge No. 606. Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen M. (Jeffrey D.) Willie and Elizabeth A. (Larry) Raivala, one son, James G. (Debra) Ronding, and a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Ronding, all of Superior; nine grandchildren, Michael, Nicole, Shanna, Allison, Katie, Greg, R.J., Rachael and Derek; one brother, Kermit (June) Ronding, Houston, Texas; a sister, JoAnn (William) Erickson, Duluth; and a special friend, Terri Sutherland, Superior. He was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen, in 1984, a son, Patrick, in 1991, his parents, Hilda and Andrew Ronding, and two brothers and three sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Cathedral of Christ the King. Fr. Daniel Dahlberg will be celebrant. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Irene L. Grady
Irene L. Grady, 86, a Tacoma, Wash., area resident for the past 48 years, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in the Tacoma area. Survivors include her husband, Floyd Grady of Tacoma; a son, John (Barbara) Grady, Tacoma; one daughter, Shirley (Floyd) Clifton of Gig Harbor, Wash.; grandchildren, Renee Tomlinson, Alen Clifton, Jill Johnson, Mary Miller and April Grady; and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation was Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Gig Harbor, where the funeral took place at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment icon was at Haven of Rest Cemetery.

Herbert D. Jackson
Herbert D. Jackson, 63, of 1614 Iowa Ave., died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in Miller-Dwan Medical Center, Duluth. He was born Aug. 14, 1935, in Independence, Kan., and had resided in Superior for the past 10 years. Jackson was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War era. He was a member of Hope Congregational Church in Superior and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was employed as a custodian by the Superior-Douglas County Senior Center. Surviving are his wife, Kristine; two sons, Phillip Jackson, Los Angeles, Calif., and Aaron Jackson, Superior; and three sisters, Alice McNulty, McKinney, Texas, Cleta Clingan, Elk City, Kan., and Phyllis (Kenneth) Killmon, Pera, Ariz. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Downs Funeral Home, where visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Pastor Larry Steel of Hope Congregational Church will officiate, with interment to be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Violet K. LaLonde
Violet K. LaLonde, 86, died in Milwaukee on Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, after a lengthy illness. She was born on May 30, 1912, in Superior to Charles and Elizabeth LaLonde and graduated from Superior Central High School. While residing here, Ms. LaLonde was employed by The Daily Telegram and by Leslie Olsen in Superior. After moving from Superior, she had been employed in various offices in Milwaukee. Once a member of the former Central United Methodist Church in Superior, now known as Faith United Methodist Church, she was more recently a member of First United Methodist Church in West Allis. She was a member of the Professional Secretaries Association for many years and was the first Certified Professional Secretary at the Head of the Lakes. Surviving are two sisters, Elaine LaLonde of Milwaukee and Mabel Hill, Superior; and a sister-in-law, Hazel LaLonde, Ocala, Fla., widow of Violet’s brother, Ernest LaLonde. Burial was held in Milwaukee on Wednesday.

Hazel Osterheim
Hazel Osterheim, 79, of 1906 S. Ferry, #106, Anoka, Minn., 55303, formerly of Superior, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in Anoka. She was born July 4, 1919, in Johnsville, Minn., and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1942 where she participated in many extracurricular sporting events and 4-H. She lived in the Minneapolis area until 1947 and married Andrew Osterheim in Anoka on April 30, 1949. She was active in the Anoka United Methodist Church, TOPS, Sons of Norway and was the editor of her apartment newsletter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew, and grandson, Aaron, both in 1976. Surviving are a daughter, Gail Gustafson, sons Joseph and William Osterheim, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The funeral was held at Anoka United Methodist Church with pallbearers being Merle, Dennis, John and Mike Augustson, Ray Hyovalti and Scott Klingelhofer. A memorial service is pending in Superior.

Helen L. Johnson
Helen L. Johnson, 83, of Superior, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Southdale Health Care Services in Superior. She was born July 21, 1915, in Port Wing, the daughter of Anton and Hilda (Gidlund) Soderquist. She was raised and attended school in Port Wing. On Aug. 26, 1933, she married Charles O. Johnson in Duluth. He preceded her in death on Oct. 14, 1983. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Port Wing. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and traveling. She is survived by a daughter, Diane (Ted) Kavajecz, Superior; one son, Ronald (Judy) Johnson White Bear Lake, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, Rockie (Betsy) Kavajecz, Washburn, Kim (Jim) Christensen, Esko, Minn., Tracy (Scott) Uttley, Blrchwood, Minn., Rebecca (Guy) Rossato, Eau Claire, Paul Kavajecz and Sara Kavajecz, both of Superior, Kerry (Lisa) Johnson, Rosemount, Minn., Brenda Johnson, Minneapolis, Sheri (Todd) Hastings, St. Paul, and Mike Orr and Maureen Orr, both of Minneapolis; 13 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Charles, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Charlene Orr in 1968; two brothers, Al and Gib Soderquist; and four sisters, Jean Larson, Ethel Hernberger-Anderson, Ina Pichelman and Lillian Beeksma. The funeral will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Port Wing. Visitation will be from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. ln lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church, Port Wing. Arrangements are by the Frost Home for Funerals, Ashland.

Grace H. Quinn
Grace H. Quinn, Pittsford, N.Y., formerly a longtime Superior resident, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in Pittsford. Widow of Edmund T. Quinn, she is survived by two sons, Thomas E. (Phyllis nee: Hintikka) of Bristol, N.Y., and William P. (Michele nee: Mollen) of Pittsford; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Harvey P. Healy, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many friends. Mrs. Quinn was a graduate of the former St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Superior, where she later held several nursing positions. She was also director for the city health department and the nurse’s office supervisor at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. A past president of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court #1190 in Superior and the Superior Nursing Association, she had been a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and Cathedral of Christ the King Church in Superior. After retiring in Superior, she relocated to Pittsford, where a memorial Mass will be held at St. Louis Catholic Church on Saturday. Another memorial mass will be held in Superior on Friday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. in Cathedral of Christ the King. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery here. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Superior Cathedral School Fund. Arrangements are being handled by the Zornow Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Frank Baillie
Frank Baillie, 78, of Superior, died Monday night, Dec. 28, 1998, at St. Francis Home in the Park. He was born on Oct. 23, 1920, to Frank and Anna Baillie in Superior. He worked as an electrician prior to World War II for American Ship Building Company in Cleveland, Ohio. During the war, he served in the U.S. Army. After the war he moved back to Superior where he worked at Fraser Shipyards for 10 years and then as a bartender at the Lafayette Hotel and the Palace Bar for 15 years. His hobbies included vegetable gardening, fishing, hunting, sports and playing cards. He was a member of the Eagles, the Old Gang Club, and the VFW Henry S. Blomberg Post # 847. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Clyde. No services are scheduled. Burial will be at the Veterans Park in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are by the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.
