Vincent J. 'Vince' Plesko
Vincent J. 'Vince' Plesko, 83, a respected photographer and journalist, died at St. Francis Home South on Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
He was born in Superior on Aug. 8, 1915, and was a lifelong resident of Oliver. From early childhood he was interested in photography.
After working for the United States Steel Co. for 21 years and then working with his brothers in the retail liquor business he was finally able to pursue a career in photojournalism.
His most successful works were candid photos of everyday people doing ordinary things. Shooting primarily in black and white he captured a great variety of images throughout the Twin Ports area. His work was published in the Evening Telegram as a freelance photographer and also while he was staff photographer to the news room.
His photos were often seen throughout the world when syndicated by the Associated Press wire service. His images were reproduced in The Milwaukee Journal, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Grit, Duluth News-Tribune, National Enquirer, Reader's Digest, Wisconsin State Historical Society calendar, Rock and Gem and many more regional and national publications.
His photos and manuscripts were factual, accurate and honest. Achieving these goals often resulted in hardship. On one assignment in 1986, he spent two months living in a tent in Northern California researching a story on gold prospecting. Accompanied by two of his brothers, he photographed and wrote about people pursuing gold and riches using techniques that hadn't changed in decades. This type of work brought him many awards and the recognition by his peers and the members of the publishing industry.
