Lillian E. Hoffren
Lillian E. Hoffren, 77, Maple, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. Born April 15, 1921, in Maple, she was a lifelong Maple area resident. On March 12, 1940, she married Toivo Hoffren in Duluth and they had celebrated nearly 59 years of marriage. She is survived by her husband, Toivo; two daughters, Carol Clark and Rosanne Hoffren, both of Superior; two grandchildren, Kimberly and Michael Legard; one brother, Edward Hendrickson, Maple; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lila Makie, and her parents, Julius and Evelina Hendrickson. Visitation was from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral on Tuesday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. The Rev. Scott Ludford, pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church, officiated, with interment in the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers for the service were Larry Hendrickson, Michael and Kimberly Legard, Ken Clark, Duane Makie and Denny White.

Clarence R. Hill
Clarence R. Hill, 75, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in Hayward, Calif. Born June 6, 1934 in Superior, he was reared in the city's Billings Park area. He graduated from Superior Central High School in 1941 and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Superior. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the European Theater of operations during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, the former Verna Bjorklund; and two brothers, Walter and William Hill. He is survived by two daughters, Susan Day, Carlsbad, Calif., and Laurie Hill, Hayward, Calif.; a son, Clare Hill, Redmond, Wash; a brother, Franklin 'Tucker' (Virginia) Hill, Superior; two sisters, Margaret (Joseph) Flynn, Superior, and Dorothy Brownell, Redwood City, Calif.; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral was held Monday in Hayward, Calif.

Robert Peterson
Robert Peterson, 82, of 1585 E. County Road BB, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born Aug. 30, 1916, in Superior's Billings Park, to Edward and Hilda (Ytterdahl) Peterson. He was a longtime resident of Patzau, residing there for 77 years. During the Depression he rode the freight trains west, finding employment harvesting grain near Rugby, N.D. He was employed by Koppers Co. Inc., from 1938 until 1970 and by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in Pattison Park from 1972 until his retirement in 1978. On April 8, 1944, he married Joyce Webber in Carlton, Minn. He had a great love of the outdoors and was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. He had a great interest in the early history of the area and devoted many years of his life locating and excavating artifacts from the early logging camps. He is survived by a son, Lynn Peterson, Foxboro; two daughters, Wendy Peterson, Kenosha, and Maureen Danielson of Foxboro; two sisters, Estella West of Reseda, Calif., and Esther Denston, Superior; a brother, Arthur Peterson, Duluth; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert E. Peterson in 1997; and a brother, Roy Peterson, in 1990. At his request, there will be no services. Cremation will be follow by burial in the family lot in the Summit Cemetery, Foxboro, at a later date. Arrangements were handled by Downs Funeral Home.

Howard W. Gamble
Howard W. Gamble, 93, of Superior, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on May 22, 1905, in Hawthorne, to William and Jessie (Protzman) Gamble. He has resided in Superior since 1914. He was a World War II veteran, and he was with the U.S. Railroad Battalion. He had worked for the former Great Northern and retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1972 as a yardmaster. He married Dorothy Wick on April 29, 1941. He was an avid outdoorsman and a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Edward, Lester and Clifford; and a sister, Luella Gamble. Pallbearers include Corey Mathiassen, Orville Johnson, Cliff Swenson, Jerry Archambeau, Joe Gudowski, and Randy Martinson. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Robert Stoskopf will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Savior's Lutheran Church Handicap Access Fund. Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

Edwin Colby
Edwin Colby, 84, Town of Lakeside, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born July 11, 1914, in Oulu and was a longtime Oulu and Lakeside resident. He was a self-employed logger, a cook in logging camps and he owned and operated his farm in Lakeside. He was also employed as a switchman for Cargill Elevators in Duluth until his retirement in 1976. He is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, Ronald Colby and Duane (Kathy) Colby, both of Lakeside; two daughters, LaVerne (John) Winter, Superior and Pamela (William) Foris, Mooresville, N.C.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer Colby, Maple and Emil Colby, Sheboygan; three sisters, Linda (Matt) Hendrickson, Maple, Elaine Harju, Nopeming, Minn. and Eleen Zastrow, Sheboygan; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mathilda Colby, one son, Kenneth Colby, two brothers, Waino and Bill Colby and two sisters, Hilma Hakkinen and Ina Jacobson. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Friday until the 7 p.m. funeral in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Ludford, pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church, officiating. Pallbearers will be Paul, Rick and Wade Colby, Jon Winter, Lisa Bells, Angela Stillman and Rhonda Dahlen.

Gladys Marion (Groven) Keith
Gladys Marion (Groven) Keith, 67, Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Superior, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, after a nine-year battle with breast cancer. She was born Oct. 2, 1931, in Superior, the daughter of Norwegian immigrants, Fred and Borghild Groven. She was an honor roll student at Superior Central High School and Wisconsin State University, where she was active in the music and theater departments. Her acting talents took her to Denver, Colo., in 1950 where she had starring roles in 'Born Yesterday,' 'Voice of the Turtle' and 'For Love or Money.' She married Air Force Captain George Miller in 1954, eventually settling in Texas. A daughter, Sherri, was born before they were transferred to Formosa, Taiwan. Following the death of Capt. Miller in a plane crash, she and her daughter settled in Sacramento. She later married Dr. Kenneth Keith, a Sacramento podiatrist, and a second daughter, Holly, was born in 1967. The Keiths were later divorced. In 1967, Mrs. Keith began a 27-year career in the California State Senate. She first worked for Senator Tom Carrell, who died in office in 1972. Senator Carrell was succeeded by Senator Alan Robbins, for whom she worked for more than 17 years. She then worked for Senator Rose Ann Vuich before retiring in 1993. In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Sigfred Groven. Surviving are her daughters, Sherri Cowley, San Jose, Calif., and Holly (Patrick) Emmett, Oakley, Calif.; three grandchildren, Jason Cowley of Carmichael, Calif., and Serena and Alisha Emmett of Oakley; a sister, Ingrid (Jack) Daberkow, West Hartford, Conn.; nieces, Nancy Dionne and Jill Lynne, also of Connecticut; and a cousin, Alice Blascyk, Grass Valley, Calif. A celebration of her life was held Jan. 5 at 11 a.m. in the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Sacramento. Gerard Adam Radzak
Gerard Adam Radzak, 49, Green Bay, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, from complications following surgery. He was born in Superior on June 4, 1949, and attended the former A.W. Holland Orthopaedic School in Superior. He moved 29 years ago to Green Bay. Very active in community events, he was selected the United Cerebral Palsy Poster Boy of Douglas County in 1964. In Green Bay he participated in ground-breaking for the Curative Workshop. He made several trips to Madison lobbying for benefits for the disabled and many other activities. He loved sports, especially the Packers, music and camping. He is survived by his mother, Bernadette, Foxboro; brothers John (Cheryl), Minneapolis, Tim (Jerilyn), Peter (Janet) and Dan (Joan), all of Foxboro, Steve (Lynda) and David (Roberta) of rural Superior; sisters, Martha (Wayne) Blix, Superior, Joan (William) Thompson and Angie (Marty) McCuskey of Foxboro; 25 nieces and nephews; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and a special friend, Tom Phillips. He was preceded in death by his father, Adam, and his maternal and paternal grandparents. Friends may call at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until time of service. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the church with Fr. Larry Canavera officiating. Interment icon will be at St. William's Catholic Cemetery in Foxboro at a later date. The Proko-Wall Funeral Home, Green Bay, is in charge of arrangements.

Harold E. Hansen
Harold E. Hansen, 76, a longtime South Range area resident, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, in his home. He was born June 16, 1922, in Superior and was employed as a heavy equipment operator by the Stott Briquet Company for many years before retiring in 1982. He and the former Edith Koenen were married June 26, 1943, in South Range and had celebrated 55 years of marriage. He enjoyed raising donkeys, gardening and farming. Mr. Hansen was a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, had been town supervisor for the Town of Oakland and was a member of the Summit Farmers Union and the Bulk Cargo Workers Union. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albin and Opal Hansen; a daughter, Gloria Lou Hansen; a sister, Betty Love, and two grandchildren, Tracy and Gregory. In addition to his wife, Edith, he is survived by three sons, Albin (Sharyn) Hansen, Superior, David (Debbie) Hansen and Clifford Hansen, both of South Range; six grandchildren, Todd, Jamie, Raquel, Shawn, Rita and Jason Hansen; and one great-grandchild, Jacob Kennedy. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, where visitation continues Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral. Rev. Amy Hunt will officiate, with interment to be in Parkview Cemetery, Hawthorne. Pallbearers will be Todd, Jamie and Jason Hansen and Jan Resberg, Wayne Benesch and Dan Wicklund.

Richard Ingual Hanson
Richard Ingual Hanson, 95, a resident of Wascott, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at Spooner Health System. He was born Dec. 12, 1903, in Iron Mountain, Mich., to Martin and Ingrid Hanson. He worked for the Town of Wascott for 21 years until retiring in 1967. He had worked for the Ford Motor Company in Detroit making Model T's and Model A's. He moved to Minong in 1931 and worked in the construction of the Minong Flowage, then operated the Flowage Dam until he became a grader operator for the Town of Wascott. Survivors include his wife, Ella (Huff) Hanson; sons, Charles (Barbara) Hanson, Hartland, Wis., and Tony Hanson, El Paso, Texas; two grandchildren, Robert Hanson and Cheryl Hoolihan; two great-grandchildren, Bradley and Benjamin Hoolihan; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Laura, in 1983, and by two brothers, Manford and Hjalmer. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Brown Funeral Home in Minong, with Rev. Craig Nelson, pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church, officiating. Visitation in the funeral home will be from 6-8 p.m. today. Spring interment will be in the Wascott Cemetery.

Judy R. McConnell
Judy R. McConnell, 56, of Coon Rapids, Minn., formerly of Duluth, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, after a courageous fight against cancer. She had been an employee of US West Communications and was preceded in death by mother, Lorraine Johnson and father, Robert Piper. She is survived by daughters, Michelle 'Shelly' (Jay) Anderson, Laura (Chris) Vevea and Kathleen McConnell; sons, Richard Charbonneau and Michael (Barb) Charbonneau; her stepfather, Leslie Johnson; grandchildren, Jessica and Laura Anderson; brothers, Fred Piper and James Johnson; sisters, Katherine Carpenter, Barbara Piper, Jackie Poole, Mary Paulus and Debbie Abbott; special friend, Roy McConnell; goddaughter, Jean McConnell; and many nieces, nephews and friends. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Washburn-McReavy Seman Chapel, 1827 Coon Rapids Blvd. in Coon Rapids. Interment icon will be in the Epiphany Cemetery, Coon Rapids. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-8 p.m. at the chapel with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation resumes there on Monday for one hour prior to service.

James C. Mihalik
James C. Mihalik, 73, of 5427 Oakes Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, at the St. Francis Home South. He was born March 26, 1925 in Superior and was a lifelong city resident. Mr. Mihalik served in World War II in the U.S. Army's 749th Tank Battalion. He retired in 1985 from the Burlington Northern Railroad where he worked for over 30 years as a machinist. He was also a meat cutter at the former 21st Street Market and Buehler's Market. He was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church, a life member of the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post No. 847 and a member of International Association of Machinists. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; two daughters, Paula (Larry) Zoldos and Lisa Houk, both of Superior; two grandsons, Chad Mihalik and Timothy Houk; three granddaughters, Jennifer and Angela Michalski and Paige Lambert; a sister, Helen (Raymond) Skandel, Superior; a stepsister, Betty Peterson, Superior; a stepbrother, Edward Zelma, Superior; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey, in 1998, his parents, Stephen and Sophie Mihalik and his stepmother, Helen Mihalek. A Mass of Christian Burial is tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday in Holy Assumption Catholic Church, where visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Fr. Robert Olson will officiate. Interment will be in Veteran's Memorial Park in Greenwood Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post No. 847. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Lake Superior Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements are being handled by the Downs Funeral Home.

Elizabeth L. "Betty" Hachey
Elizabeth L. "Betty" Hachey, 80, of Kenosha, formerly of Superior, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at Kenosha Hospital and Medical Center. Born on Jan. 17, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Claire (Hussy) Aardappel. In 1946 she married Samuel Hachey in Superior. He preceded her in death in 1971. She was retired from the Sears Roebuck Company in Superior. In March of 1998, after living most of her life in Superior, she moved to Kenosha. Survivors include two sons, Samuel (Corlis) Hachey of Kenosha, and Roger (Beverly) Dahlgren of Surprise, Ariz.; two daughters, Dianne Klemm of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Ellie (Michael) Melton of Minneapolis; four sisters, Elayne Vergamini of Superior, Joanne Moore of Denver, Colo., Edith Spangler of Rice Lake, and Kathleen Minook of Rice Lake; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Piasecki-Althaus-Thulin Funeral Home, 3720 - 39th Avenue in Kenosha. Interment icon will be private. Visitation in the funeral home will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Willard G. Nystrom
Willard G. Nystrom, 77, a resident of 535 Faxon St., died on Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, in his home. He was born on March 25, 1921, in Mason, Wis., and had attended elementary school in Mason. He was a 1939 graduate of the Ashland High School. Mr. Nystrom enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May of 1942 and had served with the European Theater of Operations aboard the USS Charles Lawrence DE 53, as Chief Electronics Technician. He transferred in January of 1935 to the USS Springfield CL 66 Light Cruiser and served in the South Pacific with Admiral Halsey's 3rd and 5th fleets until Sept. 2, 1945 when the Japanese surrendered. In September 1950 he was called back in the Navy to serve in the Korean War aboard the USS Hammer DD 718 until the spring of 1951. Mr. Nystrom had been a self-employed real estate broker since 1951 and was most recently secretary and treasurer of Badger Builders of Superior. He had served as a director of the Community Bank of Superior since 1973 and was chairman of the board of directors from 1981-93. He was also a director of the Wisconsin Waterway Commission, member of the Superior Chamber of Commerce, the Douglas County Development Association, University of Wisconsin Superior Foundation, Pilgrim Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post, member of the Henry S. Blomberg Post #847 V.F.W., past president of the Superior Board of Realtors, past president of the Wisconsin Realtors Association, past exalted ruler of the Superior Elks #403 and past chairman of the Douglas County Republican Party. He was also a member of the Arrowhead Radio Amateurs Club, call #W9GTO. He was preceded in death by his father Herbert and mother Margaret Nystrom; a grandson, Bryan Nystrom; brother, Howard Nystrom and a son-in-law, Bill Manion. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Vernette Jensen Nystrom; son, Richard (Ruth) Nystrom and daughter, Barbara Manion of Superior; grandchildren, Stacy Nystrom of Edina, Minn., Leslie (David) Defries of MinneapoIis, Kristy Nystrom of Edina, Minn., and Kristin, Jeffery and David Manion of Superior; two brothers, Herbert (Louella) of Delano, Minn., and John 'Jack' of Superior; six sisters, Beatrice Landman of Houston, Texas, Lois (Bob) Cleveland of Olympia, Wash., Marian (Elmer) Westland of Grandview, Wis., Jane Nordin of Anoka, Minn., Maxine (Ansel) Sawyer of Gordon, Wis., and Joan (David) Koch of Punta Gorda, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Jean Nystrom of Superior and Elva Nystrom of Grandview, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews. A gathering for friends and relatives will be held on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. memorial service in the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. Rev. Waldo Johnson of Pilgrim Lutheran Church will officiate. Private inurnment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, Superior. Geraldine M. "Gerry" Tomzak
Geraldine M. "Gerry" Tomzak, 67, Hayes Court, Superior, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospice Unit, Duluth, following a sudden illness. Born Dec. 4, 1931 in Superior, she was a lifelong Superior area resident. She was a homemaker and graduated from the former Cathedral High School. She married Bernard "Bernie" Tomzak on Dec. 29, 1962 in Superior and they recently celebrated 36 years of marriage. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and its Altar Society and where she also served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was a member of the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and its Altar Society. Mrs. Tomzak volunteered for many concerns such as at St. Francis Nursing Home in Billings Park, the St. Luke's Hospice Unit, Duluth, the Spice of Life, the United Way, and was a member of Bible studies and prayer groups throughout the area. She attended Thursday evening Prayer Cenacle affiliated with St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Superior. In addition to her husband Bernie, she is survived by one son, Mark (Kathy) Tomzak, Lakeville, Minn.; two daughters, Geri Ann (Brian) Howe and Jeanne Rogge, both of Woodbury, Minn.; three grandchildren, Brian Gedatus, David Rogge and Sara Rogge, all of Woodbury; one brother, Robert "Bob" (Gretchen) Horyza, Superior; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Wanda Horyza; a brother, Leonard Horyza and her first husband, Ralph Delaney. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Thursday in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home where a Rosary service is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., conducted by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court #1190, and Scripture service follows at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Francis Catholic Church with Fr. James Tobolski, pastor, as celebrant. Interment icon will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Pallbearers will be two grandsons, Brian Gedatus and David Rogge, along with Dr. Thomas Tomzak, Patrick Tomzak, Walt Baltes and Mike Carey.

John J. Granlund
John J. Granlund, 78, formerly of 2977 S. Colby Road, Maple, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born May 16, 1920 in Oulu, he was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Granlund was a woodsman and also sailed the Great Lakes for Bethlehem Steel. He was a member of the Seafarer's Union and the Brule River Sportsmen's Club. He and the former Delores Colby were married on Nov. 18, 1961. She died as the result of a fire in 1972. Surviving are a daughter, Renee Schiff, South Range; a son, Myron Granlund, Maple; three grandchildren, Rochelle and Randy Schiff and Jason Granlund; a brother, William E. (Bert) Granlund, Oulu; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Jennie Granlund, a brother, Emil, an infant brother, Francis, and sisters, Lillian Tolonen, Martha Olson, Jennie Kakko and Irene and Helmi Granlund. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Downs Funeral Home, where visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Rev. Stephen M. Staurseth, pastor of First Covenant Church in Superior will officiate, with interment to be in the Maple Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery. Jessie F. Bushendorf
Jessie F. Bushendorf, 89, 8274 E. San Road, South Range, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born June 30, 1909, in Duluth and was a longtime Superior resident. Mrs. Bushendorf was a longtime member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W., in 1988. Surviving are a sister, Lois McKowski, Silverdale, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Bernice Phillips, Salem, Oregon; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Pastor Donald and Mary Berg and Yvonne Johnson, all of Superior, and Pam Coolidge, Two Harbors, Minn. The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday in Pilgrim Lutheran Church, where visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Pastor David Eckman will officiate, with interment to be in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Downs Funeral Home.

Jean S. (Stoll) Hughes
Jean S. (Stoll) Hughes, 72, of Superior, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, following a courageous 16-month battle with brain cancer. She was born Sept. 19, 1926, in Menomonie, Wis., the daughter of Daniel and Delia Stoll, and married Bernard 'Bernie' Hughes on Nov. 21, 1944. Surviving in addition to her husband, Bernie, are two sons, Barry Hughes, Denver, Colo., and Terry Hughes, Delaware, Ohio; a daughter, Mary Beth (Ron) Scavo, Blaine, Minn.; two grandsons, Marc Scavo of Blaine, Minn., and Daniel Hughes of Westlake, Ohio; two granddaughters, Ange Scavo of Ramsey, Minn., and Melinda Hughes of Westlake; a brother, Donald (Bonnie) Stoll, of Menomonie; a sister, Joanne Thorud, also of Menomonie; aunts, niece, nephews, cousins and many friends. Mrs. Hughes received her bachelor's degree from Eastern Montana College of Education, in Billings, Mont., and her master's degree from Mankato (Minn.) State University. She taught public school for 30 years which included: English at Hamilton (MT) High School, English and French at Corvalis (MT) High School, French at Mankato State University Campus School, French at Ordean (Duluth) Junior High and student teacher supervision at University of Minnesota-Duluth. She held many leadership roles in her years in professional education. Among them were: Served on the Advisory Council of the Central States Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, as state president of the Minnesota Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, president of Alpha Delta Kappa Wisconsin Upsilon Chapter, president of Alpha Delta Kappa Wisconsin Fidelis Epsilon Chapter and served on state committees. She remained active in world language professional organizations through presentations, presiding and serving on numerous committees. Among honors she received were: Emma Birkmaier Award in recognition of outstanding service and support for foreign language in Minnesota, the Roland Dillie Award for Distinguished Service to the Humanities, National Textbook & ACTFL Award for building community interest in foreign languages, Concordia College International Language Villages Award for outstanding service and was twice selected by Radio Station WCCO as a "Good Neighbor." In addition, Mrs. Hughes was active in her local community serving in such capacities as: Elks #403 Auxiliary as president and most all other offices (also secretary of Wisconsin EIKs Ladies), Superior/Douglas County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, Superior/Douglas County Chamber member of the Superior Days Team in Madison, City of Superior Election Judge and was selected as Superior/Douglas County Co-Citizen of the Year in 1995 with husband, Bernie. She loved to travel with her husband, Bernie. In addition to traveling over much of the United States, they enjoyed a two month world trip. Other trips to Australia, New Zealand, the Canadian Provinces, Iceland and Greenland, Puerto Rico, Anguilla and French Polynesia. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 13 at the Superior Elks Lodge with the Rev. Karen Gustafson, minister of the First Unitarian Church of Duluth, officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held in the Lodge room from 11 a.m. until the time of the memorial service. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the following organizations: Superior Elks #403 Auxiliary, the Superior- Douglas County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, Alpha Delta Kappa, Wisconsin Epsilon Chapter, Alpha Delta Kappa, Wisconsin Fidelis Chapter and the Minnesota Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Patricia "Patti Jo" (Lawler) Manske
Patricia "Patti Jo" (Lawler) Manske, 44, of Shoreview, Minn., formerly of Superior, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at the Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, as a result of a motor vehicle accident. She is survived by one daughter, Michele Manske, Shoreview; her parents, Robert and Shirley LawIer, Wascott; a brother, Dr. Michael (Karen) Lawler, Lake Nebagamon; one sister, Kate (Dr. Phillip) Ferry, Wabasha, Minn.; her special friend, Charles "Chaz" Sprunck, St. Paul; one niece, several nephews and many friends. She was working toward her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota, where she was employed as assistant director with the Air Quality Project University Extension Service. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church ELCA, Solon Springs. Her family will greet friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Minong and again Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Mary Jane Nevins
Mary Jane Nevins, 77, Brule, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, in her residence. Born April 19, 1921, in Chicago, Ill., she had lived in Oak Park, Ill., until she moved to Brule in 1984. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Lake Nebagamon, and the Oak Park Women's Exchange. She is survived by four sons, George Nevins, Brule, Patrick Nevins, Homewood, Ill., and Michael and Richard Nevins, both of Oak Park; one daughter, Mary Nevins, Brule; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1992 and a son, Donald in 1967. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. on Friday in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home and continues there from 10:30 a.m. Saturday until the 11 a.m. funeral. Fr. Dean Buttrick, pastor of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Lake Nebagamon, will officiate.

Viola W. (nee Smith) Betzwieser Currie
Viola W. (nee Smith) Betzwieser Currie, 83, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center, Joliet, Ill. Born in Chicago, she was previously a resident of Gordon, Wis., and had resided in Joliet for the past year and a half. She is survived by a daughter, Lois (Thomas) Gleason of Joliet; a son, Louis (Mary Jean) Moller, Milwaukee; eight grandchildren, Kelly (Stephen) Widlowski, Michael (Anne) Gleason, KathIeen (David) Harvey, Thomas (Nora) Gleason, Gregory, Adam, Jeffrey and Julia Betzwieser; six great-grandchildren, Matthew and Daniel Harvey, Zachary, Emily and Nicholas Widlowski, and Lauren Gleason; one sister, Marie Opdahl; and many Currie grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Rose (Rhein) Smith, her first husband, Louis Betzwieser and her second husband, D.W. Currie. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday at St. Jude Catholic Church in Joliet. Another funeral will be held at the Brown Funeral Home, Solon Springs, on Saturday at 10 a.m. Spring interment will be in St. Pius Cemetery, Solon Springs. Stanley A. Anderson
Stanley A. Anderson, 83, a lifelong Superior resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. Born March 3, 1915, in Superior he was employed as a carman by the DM&IR Railroad for over 20 years. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church; Nordlandslaget, a Norwegian organization; the Twin Ports Genealogical Society and was a charter member of the Pattison Park Lions Club. He is survived by three sons, John Anderson, Superior, Neil (Tami) Anderson, Wentworth and Ben (Petra) Anderson, Superior; three daughters, Jean (Merlyn) Leih, Merrill, Wis., Donna Armstrong, Jordon, Minn. and Karen Solheim, Palo Alto, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd Anderson, Superior; a sister, Anna Hoover, Madison; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, a son, Sam Anderson in 1973 and a grandson, Christopher Armstrong in 1999. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Sunday in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home and will continue Monday in Faith United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral. Anne F. Homich
Anne F. Homich, 79, of 1800 New York Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at St. Francis Home in the Park. A former resident of 44 E. 2nd St., she was born May 11, 1919, in Superior and was a lifelong Superior resident. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and had been a member of the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Surviving are one daughter, Patricia A. Turnbull, Cape Coral, Fla.; three sons, Richard (Patricia) Homich, Iron River, Joseph Homich and Leo (Delores) Homich Jr., both of Superior; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Gunski, Pomona, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Homich Sr., on Feb. 14, 1997. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation begins at 6 p.m. Friday in the William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Brad, Kevin, Jeff, Tim and Kim Homich, Dawn Middleman and Craig Turnbull.

Jean Elizabeth (Fintel) Lutz
Jean Elizabeth (Fintel) Lutz, 73, Roscoe, Ill., formerly of Superior, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, in the Rockford (Ill.) Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 7, 1925, in Elmdale, Kansas, she was the daughter of Rev. Homer Addicks and Harriet (Howard) Fintel. Her father was pastor of the former First United Methodist Church in Superior's East End for many years. While residing in Superior in the early 1950s, she was employed as an officer worker at the former Stack and Company Department Store. She married Jerome James Lutz in St. Paul, Minn., and was employed by the Army Corps of Engineers in Europe and Africa, traveling extensively. She was an annual visitor to the home of Gloria Johnson in Superior. In addition to her husband, 'Jerry,' she is survived by four sons, Patrick Thomas (Sally) Lutz, Hazel Crest, Ill., Robert Jerome Lutz, Long Beach, Calif., William James (Tammy) Lutz, Buford, Ga., and James Joseph Lutz, Lansing, Ill.; one daughter, Elizabeth Jean Montoya, Mount Prospect, Ill; six grandchildren; and a brother, John Fintel, West Allis, Wis. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and one sister. Services were held Jan. 21 in the Fitzgerald and Associates Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, in Rockford, with Rev. Nancy L. Weingartner of Cherry Valley United Methodist Church officiating.

Ardyth Hinaus
Ardyth Hinaus, 80, of Bruce, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at her residence. She was born July 18, 1918, in Ladysmith to Oramille and Ethel Davison. She married Earl Hinaus in Ladysmith Sept. 15, 1937, and they resided in Ladysmith until moving to Bruce in 1941 Mrs. Hinaus had been employed by the U.S. Postal Service in the Bruce Post Office for 28 years, retiring in July of 1978. She then worked at the Bruce Telephone Company from July 1978 until September of 1989. She was a member of the Bruce Federated (Methodist) Church. She is survived by a son, E.L. 'Bud' (Mary) Hinaus, Solon Springs; a daughter, Virginia (Burton) Garrell, Webster, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Evron Davison, Crandon, Wis., and Merle Davison, Platteville, Wis.; one sister, Melba Hobbs, Champlin, Minn.; and a niece, Becky Steward, Ramsey, Minn. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Bruce Federated Church in Bruce with Rev. Linda Shearer officiating. Interment icon will be in the Bruce Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Sunday in the Nash-Jackan Funeral Home in Bruce and on Monday in the church for one hour prior to the service. Evelyn E. Thompson
Evelyn E. Thompson, 85, of Bayfield, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at the Memorial Medical Center in Ashland. She was born March 12, 1913, in Elk Creek, Wis., the daughter of Ole and Julia (Olson) Olson. She was raised in Independence, Wis. She married George A. Powers on Sept. 21, 1936. He preceded her in death in January of 1944. She later married June 'Tommy' Thompson on Sept. 1, 1945, in Bayfield. He died on Oct. 22, 1986. She was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bayfield and belonged to the Bethesda Women's Circle. She enjoyed gardening and flowers. She is survived by four children, Lubelle (Lon) Whitfill of Louisville, Ky., George (Carole) Powers, Washburn, Karen (Richard) Gorman, Washburn, and Beatrice "Betty" (William) Brooks, Drummond; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one brother; Orville Olson of Independence, Wis.; three sisters, Viola (John) Dunham, Deerfield, Ill., Alvina (Hugh) Goard of Independence and Irene (Roland) Cavanaugh, Bay City, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Shirley Moon, three brothers and one sister. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bayfield with Pastor Richard Bouton officiating. Burial will be held in the Greenwood Cemetery, Bayfield. Margaret L. "Margie" McKenna
Margaret L. "Margie" McKenna of the Pattison Park area, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. Born on March 3, 1923, in Alhambra, Calif., she lived most of her life in the Duluth-Superior area. She graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1941. She married Jack McKenna on Feb. 4, 1946, at St. Michael's Church, West Duluth, and they recently celebrated 53 years of marriage. She was employed as a membership secretary by the Duluth YMCA for many years until her retirement in 1973. She was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church in South Superior. She is survived by her husband, Deacon Jack McKenna; three sons, Brian McKenna, Bemidji, Minn., John (Laurie) McKenna, Duluth, and Kevin (Cynthia "Sissy") McKenna, Pattison Park area; six grandchildren, Sean, Kerri, Shannon, Casey, Nowell and Mark McKenna; six great-grandchiIdren; two stepsisters, Ruby Smith, San Francisco, Calif., and Jeanne Peters, in Tennessee; one stepbrother, David Carlson, Taconite Harbor, Minn.; and one brother-in-law, David McKenna. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grover and Ida Bowerman and an uncle and aunt, David and Margaret Carlson. Genevieve Irene Rimmer
Genevieve Irene Rimmer, 73, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. She was born on March 25, 1925 to Joseph and Irene (Olson) Tomczak. She is a 1942 graduate of Central High School. Mrs. Rimmer lived in Amadore County, Calif., for 30 years and worked as a service representative for Pacific Bell Telephone. She was preceded in death by her mother in February, 1999. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Pecoraro of Asuncion, Paraguay; brothers, Roger (Suzie) Tomczak of California, and James (Mary) Tomczak of Superior; and one sister, Joyce Fransen of Superior. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. in the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Graceland Cemetery at a later date.

Marion Catherine Baker
Marion Catherine Baker, 85, of Osseo, formerly of Superior, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Osseo Area Medical Center. She was born June 30, 1913, in Superior, to Edwin and Emma (Hill) Hedberg. She married Oris Baker on Oct. 7, 1936, in Waukon, Ill. He preceded her in death on May 15, 1994. She graduated from Luther Hospital School of Nursing in Eau Claire in 1935 and worked at Luther Hospital there until 1942 when she moved to Superior, where she worked at St. Joseph's Hospital and the Superior Clinic. While in Superior she was active in Christ Lutheran Church as a charter member of the Gloria Dei Guild, a member of the Altar Guild for many years and taught Sunday School. In 1978 she moved to Osseo and was active in the Osseo Lioness Club, Osseo Senior Citizens, AARP, was a past president of the Osseo Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Luther Hospital Nurses Alumni. She is survived by two daughters, Kathleene (Gerald) Menzhuber, Minneapolis, Carol (Eugene) Rich, Heber Springs, Ark.; a son, John (Linda) Baker, Milwaukee; a sister, Betty Smith, Milwaukee; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a great-grandson, Thomas; and two sisters, Ethel Lower and Doris Waletzko. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Foster, with the Rev. Dennis Voss officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Lucille S. Simpson O'Brien Kongevick
Lucille S. Simpson O'Brien Kongevick, 80, formerly of 1410 Cypress Ave., died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born June 28, 1918, in Superior, and lived here most of her life. She was a graduate of the former Superior Central High School in 1936. She was employed by the former Globe Shipyards and the former Great Northern Railroad as a machinist's helper during World War II. She was then employed by the former St. Joseph's Hospital, former St. Mary's Hospital, former Superior Memorial Hospital and was assistant to the Mother Superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph at the former Nazareth on the Lake Convent in Superior. Most recently she was employed as a hostess by the Mariner's Landing Restaurant. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, the Ruth Circle and the Quilting Group affiliated with the church, the Women of Evangelical Lutheran Churches in America, an active member of the Superior-Douglas County Senior Center, the Senior Friendship Club, the Burlington Northern Carman's Auxiliary, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and was a member of the former Kazoo Kids musical group of the Superior Senior Center. Surviving are two sons, Paul William O'Brien, Eagle River, Wis., and Ray S. O'Brien, Superior; three daughters, Mary (Donald) Nelson, Superior, Beverly (John) Somppi, Roseville, Minn., and Barbara (David) Lawler, Ramsey, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Jim, Marc and Kraig O'Brien, Jeff Nelson, Kristi (Mike) Anderson, Nikki Somppi, Stephanie O'Brien and Kristina O'Brien; three great-grandchildren, Jessica and Geoffrey O'Brien and Derek Anderson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ambrose W. 'Bunny' O'Brien; her second husband, Joseph P. Kongevick; her parents, Victor and Ida Simpson; three brothers, Ray Simpson, Victor S. Simpson and Victor E. Simpson; and four sisters, Victoria Smith, Altie Lettenstrom, Inga Simpson and M. Inga Simpson. George Lagerud
George Lagerud, 80, of Superior, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Bennett to Reinhart and Elise Lagerud on July 8,1918, and resided in Superior since 1937. He worked as an electrician for the former Great Northern and the Burlington Northern railroads until he retired in 1978. He was also a World War II Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Margaret and Helen. He is survived by his wife, Gladys; sons, Marlen (Sharen) Fritsch of Superior and Harold Fritsch of Grandview; a daughter, Cherie Pribula of Superior; a brother, Conrad Lagerud of Middle River; and nephews Jack Lucius of Trego, Les Lucius of Ashland and Bill Thorsell of Spokane, Wash.; two nieces, Carol and Betty, also of Spokane; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. A private family service will be at a later date. Burial will be in Bennett Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

Emma Rosalie Shave
Emma Rosalie Shave, 89, a longtime resident of Solon Springs, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at Lake Haven Manor in Duluth. She was born April 4, 1909, in New Richland, Minn., to Edward and Martha (Bouldan) Casper. She moved to Solon Springs in 1937 and then moved to Superior in 1986 after her husband's death. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the WELCA in Solon Springs. Survivors include three daughters, Darlene (Arthur) Legore, Solon Springs, Beverly (Dennis) Strongitharm, Duluth, and Lois Schmidt, Solon Springs; 11 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; two brothers, Melvin Casper, Range, Wis., and Earl Casper, New Richland, Minn.; and a sister, Ida Gratz, New Ulm, Minn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, on April 9, 1984; three brothers, Ken, Arthur and Leonard; and a sister, Elsie Ulrich. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Solon Springs, with the Rev. Dennis Bergeson officiating. Lorraine Effie Kappus
Lorraine Effie Kappus, 80, a resident of Minong, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Spooner Health System. She was born Oct. 21, 1918, in Gordon, to Isaac and May (Delamater) Loger and had been a resident of Washburn County for most of her lifetime. Survivors include three sons, Thomas, Billy and Arthur, and a foster daughter, Beverly Matthews, all of Minong; 10 grandchildren, Ray, Wayne, Bill, Sonya and Talinia Olson, Bruce and Becky Gustafson, Ken and Cara Erickson and Keith Ramsey; 10 great-grandchildren, Zach, Bradley, Lisa, Sarah and Carley Olson, Dusty, Cory and Karla Gustafson, Carrie Shilts and Bailey Erickson; and a sister, Betty (Dave) Rich, Spooner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, on Feb. 29, 1996; a son, Charlie; a grandson, Steven; four brothers, Sherm, Ray, Art and Lorm; and a sister, Mabel. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Brown Funeral Home in Minong, with the Rev. Stephen Floyd officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. William E. Peterson
William E. Peterson, 70, a resident of 915 Broadway St., died on Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, in his residence. He was born in Duluth on Oct. 13, 1928, to Arvid W. and Blanche Peterson. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and had worked as a truck driver. He was the former owner of the Viking Tavern in Superior. He was a member of the Palestine Masonic Lodge in Duluth, the Scottish Rite of Duluth, a former member of the York Rite Bodies of Superior, AAD Temple of the Shrine, Duluth, where he was a member of the Patrol, the Elks Lodge of Duluth, Superior Shrine Club and the All American Club. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne E. Peterson; a daughter, Linda Jean Peterson of Las Vegas, Nev.; three brothers, Richard L. (Linda) Peterson and James (Janice) Peterson of Duluth, and Don Peterson of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. Interment icon will take place in the family lot in Park Hill Cemetery, Duluth. Visitation will be on Wednesday from noon until the service.

Eugene T. Lundholm
Eugene T. Lundholm, 76, of 2202 Hughitt Ave., died on Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, in his residence. He was born in Superior on Oct. 21, 1922, to Herman and Esther (Paulson) Lundholm. He was a graduate of the former Central High School in Superior. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he had served with the chemical warfare division in England and France. He received his bachelor's degree in English and Music from Wisconsin State University in 1947, his master's degree in English from the University of Southern California in 1956 and his M.S.L.S. (Library Science) degree from the University of Southern California in 1959. Lundholm held several teaching positions in California from 1947 to 1961 and served as a librarian at the California Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks, Calif., from 1960-1961. He served as librarian for the Los Angeles Public Library from 1961 to 1967. He served from June of 1967 until his retirement in January of 1988 as an assistant professor in library science at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He also served as head librarian for six years and served on the planning committee for the new city library. He was a professor emeritus at UWS. Lundholm was a lifelong member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior, and most recently had served on the church council. He had also been active with the Mensa Society, California Federation of Chaparral Poets, Mary Carr Moore MSS Club, Matinee Musicale composers section International Poetry Association, Secretary/Treasurer of the Whitefish Lake Association, Treasurer and Executive Committee of TAUWF and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. In 1987, Lundholm copyrighted the musical setting for Rudyard Kiplings poem "IF" and the play based on the life of H.P. Blavatsky. He had served as an adviser to the Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity and the Little Sisters of Sigma Tau Gamma. He received the Professor Grubb Award for outstanding adviser of the Sigma Tau Gamma National Fraternity and had received the "Man of the First 20 Years" award from the Alumni of the local Sigma Tau Gamma Chapter. Lundholm had been listed in Marquis' Who's Who, Dictionary of International Biography and International Who's Who in Poetry. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. Survivors include a daughter, Dagmar (Lisa) Lundholm and an aunt, Helen Lundholm in Minneapolis, Minn.; cousins Ruth Grandstrand of Freeport, Ill., Marian (Masaharu) Ano in Japan, Gladys Olson of Lindstrom, Minn., Helen (Milt) Hanson of Littleton, Colo., Everett (Madelyn) Hawkinson of Chisago City, Minn., Elliott (Marjorie) Hawkinson of Shafer, Minn., Carl (Susan) Henrikson of Boulder, Colo., Ann Laing of Kenton, Ohio, Barbara (Lynn) Edwards of Houston, Texas, Dr. Donald (Pat) Paulson of Menlo Park, Calif., Karen (Gary) Jorgenson of Round Lake, Minn. and Mary (David) Hanner of San Jose, Calif. The funeral will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Pilgrim Lutheran Church with the Rev. Waldo S. Johnson officiating. Interment icon will be at a later date in the family lot in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home and continues on Thursday in the church from noon until the time of service. Eunice A. Kringle
Eunice A. Kringle, 85, a longtime town of Doyle resident, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at the Rice Lake Convalescent Center. She was born in New Richmond, Wis., to Arthur and E. Belle Swanson on Aug. 13, 1913. They lived in Clear Lake until moving to Barron in 1929 where she graduated valedictorian of her high school class of 1931. She then attended River Falls Teacher's College, graduating with a teacher's degree in 1933, and taught grade school in the town of Doyle. On June 21, 1937, she married Theron Kringle in Rice Lake, where they farmed for over 57 years. She is survived by a daughter, Linda (Dean) Steffen, Spring Lake Park, Minn.; two sons, David (Darlene) Kringle, Superior, and Steven (Kristine) Kringle, Rice Lake; seven grandchildren, Jason (Cheryl) Kringle, Andrea Kringle, Krissy Kaehler, Kimberly (E. Johnson) Kaehler, Kelly Kringle, Kayla Kringle and Kasey Kringle; a sister, Floy Born of Algoma; a half sister, Dorla (Ray) Gorne, Balsam Lake; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theron, on Feb. 22, 1995, two sisters, Ruth Swanson and Avis Sumstad, and three half brothers, Clarence, Lawrence and Roy Swanson. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Campia with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Interment icon will be in Our Savior's Cemetery. Lucille (Pearson) Schweppe
Lucille (Pearson) Schweppe, 76, of Charleston, W.Va., formerly of Superior, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, in Fairfax, Va. A native of Superior, she was a homemaker and a retired chemist. She was a member of Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral in Charleston. Surviving are three sons, John Edward Schweppe, New Market, Md., Charles Robert Schweppe, Spring, Texas, and David Michael Schweppe, Arlington, Va.; two daughters, Ellen Joan Schweppe, Oak Hill, W.Va., and Patrice Anne Vanderbeck, Cedar Falls, Iowa; a sister, Joanne Kimmes, Foxboro; three brothers, Thomas and Terrance Pearson, both of Superior, and John Pearson, Minneapolis; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Schweppe, in July of 1994; her father, Cameron Pearson, in 1987; her mother, Josephine Pearson, in February 1995; and a brother, Cameron 'Bud' Pearson, in the summer of 1998. Services were on Feb. 22 at Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, with entombment in Mount Olivet Mausoleum in Charleston.

Pearl Mae (Dahl) Thompson
Pearl Mae (Dahl) Thompson, 89, a former Superior resident, died on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at a nursing home in Peoria, Ariz. She was born Jan. 1, 1910, in Superior, to Peder and Olga (Bergersen) Dahl. She attended Superior schools and after graduating from Superior East High School and Superior State College she was a teacher in Wisconsin for five years. She married C. Norman Thompson on June 13, 1939, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Superior. He was a teacher in the Superior School District and died in June of 1990. She was a Red Cross worker in Pensacola, Fla., during World War II, and after she and her husband moved to Martinsville, N.J., in 1946, where she served as an executive director of the Rolling Hills Girl Scout Council and was very active in civic organizations. She retired to Sun City, Ariz., and continued to be active, working as a tutor in the Laubach Literacy Program and as a hospital volunteer, among other activities. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Virginia Dahl; one brother, Normand Dahl; and her stepmother, Klara Midbust. She is survived by two nephews, Jeffrey Dahl, Superior, and Brian Dahl, Great Falls, Mont.; one niece, Constance Dahl, Great Falls; a great-niece, Jennifer Dahl; and a great-nephew, Brian Dahl, both of Superior. Catherine H. 'Katie' Bleskan
Catherine H. 'Katie' Bleskan, 84, 1120 Broadway, a longtime Superior resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, in her home. She was born Sept. 14, 1914, in Mellen, graduated from high school and received her registered nursing degree in Ashland. She previously worked as a registered nurse in the former office of Dr. Joseph Weisberg. More recently, she retired as a registered nurse from Fraser Shipyards. She was a longtime member of Cathedral of Christ the King. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Moranczyk, and a brother, Reynold Bock. Surviving are her husband, Anton 'Tony,' with whom she celebrated 49 years of marriage in April of 1998; a son, James 'Jim' (Margie) Bleskan, Superior; one sister, Helen Frisbie, Eau Claire; a special niece, Betty Pentony; and several other nieces and nephews. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Friday and continues until the 10 a.m. funeral Mass in Cathedral of Christ the King. The Rev. Dan Dahlberg will be celebrant. Robert M. Stireman
Robert M. Stireman, 86, 2000 15th Ave. S. E., St. Cloud, Minn., formerly of Superior, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at his home. He was born June 20, 1912, in Superior to Charles and Katherine (McLean) Stireman, and married Grace Johnson on Aug. 13, 1938, in Superior. Mr. Stireman was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Superior. He and his wife moved to Florida in 1973 and then to St. Cloud in June 1998. He was a member of Superior Lodge AF&AM of Wisconsin and Sahib Shrine Temple of Sarasota, Fla. Survivors include his wife, Grace, of St. Cloud; nieces, Susan Bengtson of St. Cloud, Shari Smale of Reedsville, Pa., Micki Stireman of Superior and Jane Loiselle of Duluth; nephews, Jay Johnson of Superior and Grant Chelgren of Bloomington, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers. A memorial service took place Friday at 1 p.m. at St. Benedict's Center Chapel, St. Cloud, with interment in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, Minn. Nora V. Hoffman
Nora V. Hoffman, 89, a former resident of North 11th Street, died on Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. She was born on June 18, 1909, in Superior to William H. and Edith J. (Mormon) Hoffman and had lived in this area all of her lifetime. She was a member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church, the Martha Circle and the Pilgrim Lutheran Church Women. Survivors include two nieces, Mary Beth Swanson and Diane Owens of Portland, Oregon; one grandniece, one grandnephew, one great-grandniece, one great- grandnephew and David Minotti whom Nora helped to raise. The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Pilgrim Lutheran Church with the Rev. Waldo S. Johnson officiating. Interment icon will be in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. Mabel I. Jackson
Mabel I. Jackson, 92, of 1800 New York Ave., died on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, in the St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born Feb. 3, 1907, in Superior to Edward and Esther Jansen and was a graduate of the former Central High School. She was a homemaker and had lived in Michigan for many years, returning to Superior in her later years. Survivors include her brothers, Harold (Margaret) Jansen of Solon Springs and George Jansen of Superior; and several nieces and nephews. Private family services will be held at a later date. Lynnette N. Waint
Lynnette N. Waint, 69, of Superior, died on Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital in Superior. She was born in Superior on June 22, 1929, to Alexander and Nina (Norman) Burzynski and had been a lifelong resident of the city. Mrs. Waint had been employed as a beautician, was a homemaker and was also employed for a number of years by the Superior Clinic. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and a former member of the church choir. Survivors include her husband, John; a daughter, Nannette (Timothy) Sauter of Superior; a son, Gary (Laurie) Waint of Jefferson City, Mo.; and six grandchildren, Ryan, Neil and Adam Sauter and Ashley, Taryn and Leighton Waint. Visitation will be held Tuesday in Bethel Lutheran Church, 5821 John Ave., from 9:30 a.m. until the 10 a.m. memorial service. Rev. Richard Peterson will officiate. George R. Noble
George R. Noble, 69, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. Born in Superior, he attended Superior Cathedral High School. He had been employed by Gately's in Superior and Virginia and was the manager of the Duluth Gately's store. He also worked for Columbia Clothing from 1961 to his retirement in 1989. Mr. Noble was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of The Rosary Catholic Church and a veteran of World War II as a sergeant in the U.S. Army serving in Europe. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth, wife, Kathryn Rust Noble in 1986, brothers, John, Omer, Willard and Gordon and sisters, Claudine Palmer, Edna LaGesse and Virginia Nemec. Survivors include his daughter, Kathryn of Duluth; a brother, Joseph (Martha) Noble of Iron River; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Cathedral of Our Lady of The Rosary Catholic Church in Duluth with Fr. Tom Foster as the celebrant. Visitation was Sunday from 3-6 p.m. with a rosary service at 4:30 p.m. in the Jarvi-Dowd Chapel in Duluth. Interment icon was in Forest Hill Cemetery. Richard Dale Coons
Richard Dale Coons, 59, a resident of Appleton, formerly of Minong, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in Appleton. He was born Sept. 9, 1939, in Minong to David and Thelma (Vig) Coons. He graduated from Northwood High School in Minong as valedictorian for the Class of 1957. Mr. Coons attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior for two years from 1957-1959, then served in the Army from 1960-1962, part of this time at Fort Lewis, Wash. He had been employed as a salesman by Steenberg Homes of Neenah, Wis. Survivors include a brother, Darryl Coons, Duluth; two sisters, Phyllis (Lee) Ross, Ripon, and Vicki (Richard) Harmon, Minong; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, David, and a sister, Verna Langdon. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Brown Funeral Home in Minong, with the Rev. Dolores M. DeVinck
Dolores M. DeVinck, 85, a resident of 1500 N. 34th St., died on Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, in St. Francis Home South. She was born in Duluth on July 24, 1913, to Burhardt and Evangeline (Baker) Fleer and had been a resident of Superior all of her life. Mrs. DeVinck was a graduate of the former Sacred Heart High School and Superior State Teachers College where she received her B.A. degree. She earned her master's degree from Columbia University and taught at the Bryant School for five years. She was also a homemaker and a former member of the Superior Woman's Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, Margaret and by her husband Francis 'Curly' DeVinck on Jan. 11, 1997. Survivors include three sons, Dr. James (Holly) DeVinck of St. Cloud, Minn., John (Kay) DeVinck and Jerry (Kay) DeVinck, both of Superior; a sister, Mary Jane Giesen of St. Paul, Minn.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Abraham 'Abe' Kaner
Abraham 'Abe' Kaner, 91, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Nopeming Nursing Home in Duluth. He was born in Superior and was a lifelong resident of the Twin Ports area. Surviving are two sisters, Harriet Davis, Superior, and Lea Charniss of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his pioneering parents, Rochal and Samuel H. Kaner, sisters, Bess Pomush and Jeanne Kaner, and three brothers. He and his brothers, Henry, Isadore and Sidney were the original suppliers of sundry products to the Lake Superior freight carriers. 'The Boys,' as they were called, started out carrying large, canvas pack-sacks on their shoulders and climbed up ladders to the ships. They graduated to the "bum boats' and continued to supply the lake carriers until their retirement. One of the boats that Abe owned once caught on fire, but he was able to jump ashore after receiving some life-threatening burns. Mr. Kaner's Duluth real estate enterprise and charitable contributions were noteworthy. He was a life member of the Superior Hebrew Brotherhood Congregation. A graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Superior Hebrew Cemetery with Rabbi Shlomo Grafstein of Adas Israel Temple in Duluth officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements were handled by Downs Funeral Home.

Patricia L. Jurgens
Patricia L. Jurgens, 69, of Iron River, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. She was born Jan. 12, 1930, in Chicago, Ill., and married Frederick Jurgens on Jan. 22, 1978, in Chicago. She worked as a security guard for the Harris Bank in Chicago, retiring in 1982, after which she and her husband moved to Iron River. Mrs. Jurgens was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Iron River. Surviving are her husband, Fred; three daughters, Kathy (Rick) Ford, Dawn (Don) Tomczak and Mary Evans, all of Chicago; a son, Jim (Mary) Evans, Lake Geneva, Wis.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Debbie Medeaja and Sharron Bandos, and two stepsons, Robert and Larry Jurgens, all of Chicago; two brothers, Robert and Joseph Humbert, both of Chicago; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bart Evans, her mother, Kay Humbert, two sisters, Marion Dedina and Bern Media and two brothers, Chuckie and Herb Humbert. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in St. Michael's Catholic Church in Iron River. Rev. Fr. Alois Gabrus, OFM, will be celebrant. Margaret 'Tootsie' Olenski
Margaret 'Tootsie' Olenski, 79, of 709 N. 12th St., died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Dec. 17, 1919 in Superior and was a lifelong city resident. She married Joe Olenski on July 12, 1952 in Minnesota. Mrs. Olenski was employed by North Shore Manufacturing, the Capital Tea Rooms, Fraser Shipyards and was a certified nurse's assistant at Memorial Hospital and at St. Francis Nursing Home until her retirement in 1981. She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King. Surviving are her husband, Joseph; a daughter, Mary Ann 'Tinker' (Fred) Saccoman, Duluth; two grandchildren, Deana and Kirsten Green; three step-grandchildren, Mark Saccoman, Gina Bautista and Joleen Dudley; two sisters, Helen Schoonover, in California, and Lorraine Herubin, Superior; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by parents, Joseph and Sarah Flaherty, as well as a sister and two brothers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Cathedral of Christ the King where Fr. Floyd Louis Whipple
Floyd Louis Whipple, 59, Arlington, Texas, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in the Arlington Hospital. He was born Oct. 5, 1939, in Jefferson, Ark. During the 1960s he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Vietnam. In 1974 he married Judith Marlton while employed at Barko Hydraulics in Superior. They moved to Arlington in 1981 where he was employed by Printpack Inc. until 1992, at which time he began a long fight with cancer. In addition to his wife, Judith, he is survived by a son, Richard Whipple of Arlington; one daughter, Michelle (Michael) Doan, Arlington; two grandchildren, Ashley and Marcos Martinez; a sister-in-law, Carol Carroll, Superior; and nephews John Carroll and Dennis Carroll, both of Arlington. Abraham 'Abe' Kaner

George H. Hoium
George H. Hoium, 49, Sun Prairie, formerly of Superior, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999. He was born June 23, 1949, in Superior. He was employed as the administrative coordinator of Project Assist for the Division of Public Health and was also an EMT volunteer for the Sun Prairie EMS for 19 years. Surviving are his wife, Adele; two sons, Joshua and Justin; and his mother, Jeanette Grube of Madison. A funeral liturgy will be held at 6 p.m. Friday in St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, 2420 St. Albert Drive, Sun Prairie. Fr. Larry Bakke will officiate. Visitation will be Friday in the church from 5-6 p.m. The Cress Funeral Service in Sun Prairie is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Severson Blasjo Hargus
Dorothy Severson Blasjo Hargus, 71, Riverside, Calif., formerly of Superior, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, of cancer at Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center. She was born in Superior and lived in Riverside for 40 years. She was a registered nurse for 45 years, including a period at Interim Health Care in San Bernardino, Calif., before her retirement in 1998. She became a licensed vocational nurse in 1959 and a registered nurse in 1975 while attending Riverside City College. She became a regular nurse practitioner while attending the University of California, San Diego, in 1982. Mrs. Hargus was a member of Palm Baptist Church and Grace Baptist Church, both in Riverside. She enjoyed baking bread, sewing, knitting and crocheting. She is survived by a daughter, Susan Carnero, Moreno Valley, Calif.; three sons, Dan and Brian Blasjo, both of Riverside, and Darrell Blasjo, Lake Matthews, Calif.; two grandchildren; a sister, Louella Severson, Superior; and two brothers, Kenneth Severson of Carson, Calif., and Donald Severson, Oshkosh, Wis. She was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Severson, in 1977. Services took place Feb. 22 in Palm Baptist Church, Riverside, with interment in Olivewood Cemetery there. Arrangements were handled by the Sierra Memorial Chapel Mortuary in Riverside.

Rebecca F. (Rasmussen) Jarvi
Rebecca F. (Rasmussen) Jarvi, 93, a resident of 1900 New York Ave., died on Tuesday, March 3, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. She was born on Aug. 19, 1905, in St. Croix Falls, Wis. to J. Lev and Emily (Goodsell) Booth and had attended school in St. Croix Falls. She had been employed at an early age in West Duluth at the Box Factory and during the 1930's and 40's had been employed as a clerk by the Great Northern Railroad in Perle, Minn. Her later years were spent in the Duluth and Superior areas. Mrs. Jarvi was a member of Bayside Baptist Church in Superior, the Euclid Eastern Star of Duluth and the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Transportation Union. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, George Rasmussen in 1952; her second husband, Hjalmer Jarvi in 1998; and by five sons, Russell, James, Eugene, David and Billy G. Rasmussen. Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn (William Sr.) Nordquist, Superior; a stepdaughter, Marlene (Duane) Flynn, Duluth; a stepson, Kenneth Jarvi, Salt Lake City, Utah; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Friday in Bayside Baptist Church from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral. Rev. William Bartell will officiate, with interment to follow at a later date in Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Bayside Baptist Church. Arrangements are by the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

Pearl M. Benson
Pearl M. Benson, 88, of Ashland, formerly of Drummond, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at Court Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Ashland. The former Pearl Marion Hage was born Dec. 22, 1911, in Drummond, the daughter of Peder and Louisa (Peterson) Hage. She graduated from Drummond High School in 1929 and lived in Drummond most of her life. She was married to Bill Benson in 1937. Mrs. Benson had been secretary of the Historical Society and cemetery icon board, was a church pianist for over 50 years, was an accompanist for school music functions, and was an avid sports fan. She is survived by two sons, Wayne (Diane) Benson, Greenwood, Wis., and William (Marilynn) Benson, Spooner; one daughter, Janet (Myron) Lyndahl, Hermantown, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; a sister, Myrtle and a brother, Lyle. A memorial service will be held in early July, the exact date and time to be announced later. The Koerpel Funeral Home in Hayward is in charge of the arrangements.

Lillis M. LeRoux
Lillis M. LeRoux, 77, 1012 N. 18th St., died on Wednesday, March 3, 1999, in St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth after a courageous battle with diabetes and heart disease. She was born in Omaha, Neb., to Harold and Margaret (McEntee) Tribbey and was a lifelong resident of Superior. She was a graduate of Cathedral High School and served at Pearl Harbor during World War II as a Pharmacist Mate with the WAVES in the U.S. Navy. Mrs. LeRoux worked for Lignell Drug Store for more than 35 years. She was also a homemaker, a member of Cathedral of Christ the King, the Catholic Order of Foresters and Credit Women International. She and her husband, Fred, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 5, 1998. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Margaret (Michael Volkert) LeRoux, Worcester, Mass., and Leslee (Paul Radtke) LeRoux, Superior; three sons, Denis (Nancy) LeRoux, Duluth, James (Patty) LeRoux, Fort Lewis, Wash., and Richard (Judy) LeRoux, Kirkland, Wash.; a brother, William Tribbey, Superior; 10 grandchildren; a niece, nephews and many good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Tribbey, who died in 1983. Visitation will be held Friday from 5-7 p.m. in the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Cathedral of Christ the King with Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery.
