Edna LaFountain Trifilette
Edna LaFountain Trifilette, 87, of Superior and Tampa, Fla., died Monday, March 29, 1999. She was born in Nassau, Minn., on June 8, 1911, to Frank and Tona LaFountain. She married Charles Trifilette on Aug. 12, 1942. She was a former member of Central Methodist Congregational Church, Seaway Seeders Garden Club, Banner Lodge #62, Homemakers Club and a lifetime member of the Indianhead District of Federated Garden Clubs. Mrs. Trifilette and her husband owned and operated Trifilette's Homemade Candy and Gift Shop on Tower Avenue from 1949-1965. She was a gifted artist, well-known for her oil and watercolor paintings, flower arranging, sewing, crafts and china painting. She was also a talented writer and excelled in everything she set out to do. She loved parties, traveling and shopping with her family. With the help of her husband, Charlie, her daughter, Charna, and garden club members, she opened her own home on East 5th Street to the public for four different Christmas Holiday Open House Tours in 1967, 1971, 1976 and 1981. Proceeds were given for scholarships and to the cancer and heart funds. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mildred Neuschwander. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Charlie, daughter, Charna (Tom) Sansbury, grandson Troy Sansbury, Tracey's Landing, Md., a granddaughter, Stacie (Scott) Craig, Hillsborough, N.C., and two nephews, Ken Neuschwander, Utah and Milt Neuschwander, Calif. A memorial service is pending and will be held at Tracey's Landing, Md.

Arthur V. Biggs
Arthur V. Biggs, 72, formerly of Superior, died Thursday, March 25, 1999. A memorial service was held Sunday, March 28 in the Tigard (Oregon) Christian Church. Mr. Biggs was born Sept. 17, 1926, in Superior, graduated from Superior State University and received his law degree from the University of Wisconsin. He practiced law in Madison in the Toebaas, Hart, Kraege and Jackman firm before moving to Corvallis, Ore., in 1953 to teach business law at Oregon State University. He entered private practice in Corvallis in 1957 and continued until 1966. He moved to the Portland, Ore., area in 1967 and worked for the U.S. Department of the Interior until retiring as an assistant regional solicitor for Indian affairs in 1994. He married Patricia Nyman in 1962. Survivors include his wife; sons, Robert A. of Lebanon, Ore., and John of Portland; and brother, Robert of Salem, Ore. Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the church. Arrangements were by Young's Funeral Home of Tigard.

Maysel Louise Mullally
Maysel Louise Mullally, 88, of Hayward, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 5, 1910, in Austin, Minn., the daughter of Grover and Jessie (Love) DeRosier. They moved to Radisson, Wis., when she was young and attended school there. In 1931 she was united in marriage to Francis Mullally in Hayward. They resided there, where she worked at the Hayward Hospital as a dietary aide for 25 years. She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Hayward. She is survived by four sons, John (Karen) of Hayward, Charles (Joanne) of lone, Calif., Larry (Niomie) of Springbrook, and Michael, of Hayward; two daughters, Janice (Donald) Lang and Jessie (William) Simonson, both of Hayward; 30 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Francis in 1951, a daughter, Patricia Ann Thomas and infant son, David, and two sisters, Lois Adams and Dorothy Willan. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Hayward. Pastor Mikhail Kulakov will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Hayward. Visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m. on Monday before services at the church. Casketbearers will be David and Gary Adams, Paul Coddington, Daniel Dutcher, and Aaron and Conn Mullally. Memorials may be directed to the Hayward Regional Hospice, 11040 N. State Rd. 77, Hayward. The Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home in Hayward is in charge of arrangements.

Laura M. 'Laurie' MacDonald
Laura M. 'Laurie' MacDonald, 46, of 3126 N. 16th St., died Wednesday, March 31, 1999 in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. She was born Feb. 8, 1953 in Superior and was a lifelong city resident. She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Larson, Duluth, and Leslie (LeRoy) Bond, Superior; two sons, Leonard (Cindy) Larson, Deer Park, Wis., and Michael MacDonald, Superior; five granddaughters; her mother, Gladys Eastman, Superior; four brothers, Harold Eastman, Wausau, Daniel and Robert Eastman, both of Superior, and Kenneth Eastman, Edmonton, N.Y.; and four sisters, Harriet Barnard and Carol Barnard, both of Superior, Barbara Sather, Duluth, and Gladys Noffsinger, Wausau. She was preceded in death by her father, Harrison Eastman, two brothers, Dennis and Timothy Eastman and a sister, Lorraine Eastman. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Downs Funeral Home with Rev. Vernon Aarnes of Haven Evangelical Church, Duluth, officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Scott Haberling, Michael MacDonald, John Lundeen, Mike Delich, Arthur Carre and LeRoy Bond.

George Olsen
George Olsen, 83, of Haines Road, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born in Superior and had resided in Duluth since 1942. He had been employed as a mechanic with Northeast Mack Sales for 25 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Hermantown, West Duluth American Legion and Sons of Norway. Survivors include a daughter, Arlene (Leonard) Anick of Hermantown; two sons, Ronald (Linnea) Olsen of Cotton, Minn., and William (Nancy) Olsen of Hermantown; a sister, Gudrun Rostad of Superior; two brothers, Oscar and Harold (Jane) Olsen of Superior; four grandchildren, Daniel Olsen, Michael (Jammie) Anick, Dennis (Laurel) Olsen, and Marcia Anick; and three great-grandsons. His wife, Violet, died in 1976, and a granddaughter, Amy Anick, died in 1972. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at Bell Brothers Funeral Home, Duluth, followed by services at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Salem Lutheran Church, 4715 Hermantown Road.

Adeline Levina Hebert
Adeline Levina Hebert, formerly of Duluth, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at St. Francis Home in the Park, Superior. Born in Malmo, Neb., on July 10, 1911, she moved to Superior with her family in 1920, when they became members of Pilgrim Lutheran Church. She was associated with Armor and Co., Duluth, for many years. After she married Edmond R. Hebert, they owned and operated Arrowhead Linen Supply, Ensign Loan Co., several bars/restaurants in the area and managed the Duluth Athletic Club. She is survived by a sister, Astrid (Ray) Myers, Superior; three nieces; five great-nieces and great-nephews; and 14 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmond; her parents, Oscar and Christine Peterson; and three sisters, Agnes Hemmer, Anna Rankin and Alyce Thompson. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Superior with the Rev. David V. Eckman officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.

Marcia V. (nee: Earl) Stuart
Marcia V. (nee: Earl) Stuart, 82, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, formerly of Superior, died suddenly at her residence on Wednesday, March 31, 1999. She was born in Calgary and subsequently moved with her family to Winnipeg where she attended Daniel McIntyre institute and Success Business College, achieving an outstanding record of excellence. During the war she was employed by the Royal Canadian Navy at the Stadacona Ship Docks while her husband, Stanley Englot, was posted to Halifax. After returning to Winnipeg in 1945 and following Stanley's death, she was employed by Imperial Oil in Toronto where she met and married Joseph T. Stuart in 1954. They were then transferred to Superior, where they resided for 20 years. Upon returning to Winnipeg in 1978, she continued her connection with the Anglican church as she had done with the Church of St. Alban the Martyr in Superior, becoming a member of St. Luke's Parish and eventually becoming parish secretary for five years. Her work there was highly regarded and she and her daughter Karen were both involved in the activities at Sr. Luke's. Due to failing health she resigned this position and during the following years it became increasingly difficult for her to get around. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Stuart, her son-in-law, Chris Dant, grandson, Thomas John Stuart-Dant; and three sisters, Wyn Earl, Vancouver, Mary Jessiman, Calgary, and Betty O'Malley, Winnipeg, and members of their families. There are also family members in England. She was preceded in death by her parents, Allan and Georgina Earl many years ago; by her first husband, Stanley Englot, following World War II; by her second husband, Joseph T. Stuart in 1985; and by a sister, Margery Piggott in 1995. At her request, cremation has taken place and interment will follow at a later date. A memorial service will be at St. Luke's Anglican Church in Winnipeg at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Bob Webster officiating and Father John Lasarge delivering the Homily. In lieu of flowers if friends so wish, the family would appreciate donations in her memory to the Heart and Stroke Fund or to a charity of their choice. Arrangements are being handled by Thomson Funeral Chapels, Winnipeg.

Albert Nemec
Albert Nemec, 83, of 1116 N. 12th St., Superior, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, in Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born June 3, 1915, in Cable, and was a Superior resident since 1944. He was employed by Cutler-Magner Company's Superior Division as a kiln operator. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Nemec-Wood, a son-in-law, Russell Wood, a grandson, Kyle Wood, all of Makinen, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, on May 10, 1991, and also by nine half-brothers and half-sisters. A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cable with the Rev. William Green as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, Superior, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation resumes Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Should friends desire, memorials in his name may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary Catherine Cowger
Mary Catherine Cowger, 81, a resident of Minong, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at Spooner Health System. She was born June 24, 1917, in Chicago, to Michael and Catherine (Thomas) Thill. She married James Cowger in May of 1936 in Chicago. She had resided in Niles, Ill., before moving to Minong in 1978. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Minong. Survivors include sons, James (Lynda) Cowger and Richard Cowger, Niles; daughter, Mary Jane Anderson (special friend, Al Clements), Minong; six grandchildren, Michelle Herrera, JoAnn, Sandy and Laura Cowger, Katie and Kurt Anderson; two great-grandchildren, Stephanie Herrera and Jessica Villagomez; and brothers, John Thill, Ivanhoe, Minn., and Henry Thill, Hawthorne Woods, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976, two brothers, Joseph and Michael, and two sisters, Catherine and Janet. A memorial Mass was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Minong on Monday morning. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Brown Funeral Home in Minong handled the arrangements.

Eleanor Shulstad
Eleanor Shulstad, a retired educator and currently a resident of St. Francis Home in the Park, died Sunday, April 4, 1999. The former Eleanor Ledin was born in Superior on March 23, 1908. She graduated from Superior Central High School in 1926, and from Superior State in 1930. She taught social studies and Latin in Butternut, Wis., prior to her marriage to Clayton Shulstad in 1936. They lived in Ashland during World War II and then moved to Superior in 1943 where her husband was a civilian instructor for the Air Force cadets stationed at Superior State. After World War II, Mrs. Shulstad served the Superior School system as a short-term substitute teacher for many years before accepting a full-time position teaching Latin and English at Central High School from 1962-70. She was a lifelong member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, and a 50-year member of Superior Chapter #252, Order of the Eastern Star, becoming a 40-year past matron. She was also a member of the Superior Area Retired Educators Association and the Gamma Phi Organization in Duluth. She is survived by her husband, Clayton, who resides at 1301 E. 100th St., Apt. 315, Bloomington, Minn. 55425; two daughters, Susan C. (Phillip) Little, Edina, Minn., and Diana L (David) Noer, Greensboro, N.C.; one son, John C. (Karen) Shulstad, Minnetonka, Minn.; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters. Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home in Superior and there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 24, at Lakeside Lutheran Church in Webb Lake, Wis.

Borgehilde Scalzo
Borgehilde Scalzo, 81, Spooner, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at the nursing home unit of the Spooner Health System; a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Spooner, where visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service; arrangements are being handled by the Scalzo Funeral Home, Spooner.

Tora Bottolfsen
Tora Bottolfsen, 95, died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Superior. She was born Feb. 7, 1904, in Superior, to Carl and Elvira Engstrom and lived most of her life in Superior, except for five years in Havre, Mont. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, and its Ladies Aid and Dorcas Society. She also belonged to the Saturday Club. She married Carl Bottolfsen in December 1940 in Superior. She is survived by a stepson, Carl (Vivian) Bottolfsen in Aurora, Colo.; a stepdaughter Jean (John) Graham in Kirkland, Wash.; a brother, Bob Hammer in Superior; a sister- in-law, Helen Engstrom, also in Superior; six stepgrandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl, a stepson Donald, and three brothers, Henry, Carl and Leonard. Visitation will be Friday from noon until the 1 p.m. service at Pilgrim Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Eckman officiating. Interment icon will be at Graceland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Arrangements are being handled by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

Anthony H. Forbes
Anthony H. Forbes, dean and professor emeritus of the University of Wisconsin-Superior, died on Saturday, April 3, 1999. Born in New York City, he graduated from Salisbury School, a private preparatory school in Salisbury, Conn., in 1929. He attended Princeton and Columbia Universities, and received the LLB, cum laude, from Brooklyn Law School of St. Lawrence University in 1935. He was in private practice of law in New York City from 1935 to 1948 with time out for service as an Instrument Flying Training Instructor with the Army Air Force Technical Training Command in the Zone of the Interior. Following military service, he resumed his education, receiving a bachelor of arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1955, and the Ph.D. in history in 1960 from UCLA. He was a lecturer in history at UCLA from 1959-1963. He was then associate professor, professor of history, department head and director of summer session at Northern Michigan University at Marquette, 1963-1969; professor of history, dean of the College of Letters and Science, University of Wisconsin-Superior, 1969-1976; and professor of political science (police science), UWS, 1976-1978. He retired in 1978 as dean and professor emeritus at UWS. He was a member of the New York State Bar, the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States, Phi Beta Kappa, Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity and the National Retired Teachers Association (AARP). He was a former member of the American Historical Association, the Medieval Academy of America, Conference on British Studies, American Society for Legal History, American Legion, Regular Veterans Association, Elks and Rotary. His principal scholarly interest was English Ecclesiastical and Legal History, 1066-1832. He served as chair of the Religious Studies Section of the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters, 1965-1969, and chair of the Research Committee of the American Society for Legal History. He had authored articles on the legal problems of Roman Catholics and other non-conformists in England from the Reformation to the passage of the Emancipation Act in the 19th century. While on the staff at UWS, he served as affirmative action officer from 1970-1975 and helped in the formulation of a system-wide affirmative action policy. This was a particularly touchy period. He is survived by a son, James Forbes, in California; a step- daughter, Marion J. Johnson, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho; a grandson; three step-grand-daughters; and three step-great-granddaughters. His wife, Marion, died in 1991. Arrangements were handled by William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home.

Gunhilda O. "Hilda" Larsen
Gunhilda O. "Hilda" Larsen, 94, of New York Ave., died Friday, April 2, 1999, at St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born Sept. 2, 1904, in Superior, and grew up on Superior's South End and in Patzau. She worked at Roth Brothers in Superior before moving to Milwaukee where she worked for T.A. Chapman Co. as a buyer for many years. She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Milwaukee and worked for its Food Shelf. After retiring she returned to Superior and renewed her membership at Bethel Lutheran Church. She is survived by a sister, Agnes Larsen of Superior; a brother, August (Lila) Larsen of the Pattison Park area; three nieces, Joann (Dexter) Larson of Duluth, Judy (Miles) Schustedt of Fond du Lac, WI, and Nancy (Tom) Linneroth of Albuquerque, N.M.; and four nephews, Jack (Audrey) Izzard of Platteville, WI, Jim (Joan) Izzard of Superior, Don (Jan) Larsen of Hillsboro, Ore., and Ernest (Becky) Izzard of Brush, Colo; many grand-nieces, grand-nephews, great-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Rachel (Olson) Larsen; two sisters, Laura Hoogs and and Anna Izzard; and a brother, Carl Larsen. Visitation was Monday from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. service in Bethel Lutheran Church, Superior. Interment icon was in Greenwood Cemetery with pallbearers Bradley, Justin, Mike, Chad, Jim, Jack and Matthew Izzard. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church. Downs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Carol Marie Fistler
Carol Marie Fistler, 75, of Cloquet, died Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at Cloquet Nursing Home. She was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Cloquet, the younger daughter of Carl J.V. and Mary (DeLarosby) Johnson. She was a 1938 graduate of the Catholic Grade School and a 1942 graduate of Cloquet High School. During World War II, she first worked at Diamond Match Co. in Cloquet and then as an arc welder of ships at Globe Shipbuilding Co. in Superior for two years. She also served her country as a W.A.C. medic stationed at Fort George Wright in Spokane, Wash., from 1945-46. She then attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth and the University of Minnesota, from which she graduated in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in nursing. On Dec. 20, 1952, she married Dr. Raymond P. Fistler and worked with him in his veterinary practice at Perham, Minn., until his death in 1985. While living in Perham, she was a constituent of Perham United Methodist Church. From 1987 until 1998, she lived in Moorhead, Minn., where she was a part-time art student at M.S.U. She moved to Cloquet in 1998 following a diagnosis of A.L.S. Surviving are two children, Nancy (James) Specker of Strasburg, Colo., and Dr. Jon (Ann) Fistler of Cloquet; five grandchildren; and one sister, Lois A. Anderson of Cloquet. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Eugene A. Johnson of Superior; her step-father, Emil Rauchstadt; and one son, Jim Fistler of Detroit Lakes, Minn. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Nelson Funeral Care Chapel at 1004 Cloquet Ave. in Cloquet with a rosary service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Kenton Sailstad at 11 a.m. Saturday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet. Interment icon services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Perham Village Cemetery in Perham. Pallbearers will be Gerald Johnson, Arthur Amys, George Robinson, Charles Schumacher and Neil Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Cummings, Stephen Joseph, Elmer Fresonke and Pat DeLarosby.

Elayne Aardappel-Vergamini
Elayne Aardappel-Vergamini, 81, died Thursday, April 8, 1999, in Duluth. Born Dec. 24, 1917 in Armour, S.D., she was raised in Shell Lake and Spooner but had lived in Superior most of her life. Mrs. Vergamini had been employed by the former Arrow Cafe, Howenstein's Grocery and was a clerk for the Gamble's store in South Superior. She graduated from the former Superior East High School and the former Superior Vocational School. She married Carl Vergamini on Aug. 5, 1972 and they recently celebrated 26 years of marriage. She was a member of Itasca Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder; the Olde Towne Artists; was a Girl Scout leader and was an avid outdoor person, especially enjoying fishing on the Brule River. In addition to her husband, Carl, she is survived by three stepsons, Dr. Jerry (Judy) Vergamini, Eugene, Oregon, Dr. Phil (Nora) Vergamini, Santa Fe, N.M., and Greg (Dawn) Vergamini, Superior; one stepdaughter, Jan (John) Kinsley, Superior; three sisters, Joan Moore, Denver, Colo., Edith (Wayne) Spangler, Rice Lake, and Kathleen Bergren, Rice Lake; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Clare Aardappel; her first husband, Chesley Burton; and several brothers and sisters. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday in Itasca Presbyterian Church with the Rev. H. Duane Aslyn, pastor, officiating. Visitation continues Monday in the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Willard R. Thiessen
Willard R. Thiessen, 68, of rural Detroit Lakes, Minn., died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Fargo, N.D. He was born Dec. 17, 1930 at Mountain Lake, Minn., and moved to Clearwater, Minn., as a young boy, where he grew up and attended school. He then attended high school in Annandale, Minn. Mr. Thiessen served in the U.S. Army from 1949-52. He married the former Caroline Olson on Sept. 27, 1969 in Watertown, S.D. They lived in Minneapolis where he worked as a carpet layer. They moved to Poplar, Wis., in 1970 and to Fargo in 1980. He retired from the carpet business in 1990. In 1991, the Olsons moved to Toad Lake in rural Detroit Lakes. He loved woodworking and fishing. He was a member of the Park Rapids (Minn.) VFW, the Poplar American Legion and the Clearwater American Legion. In addition to his wife, Caroline, he is survived by nine daughters, Peggy (David) Gay, Siren, Patty Conley and Mary Jorgenson, both of Minneapolis, Betty Lou (Jeff) Nevin, Poplar, Patty (Gary) Huberty, Detroit Lakes, Gayle (Scott) Jones and Peggy (Gary) Wisted, both of Poplar, Connie Fair, Louviers, Colo., and Jackie (Curtis) Roberts, of Superior, Colo.; five sons, David (Loretta) Gille, Moorhead, Minn., Michael (Jeanie) Gille, Waverly, Minn., Bobbie Conley and David Conley and Jim Conley, all of Minneapolis; 31 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rick (Jamie) Thiessen and Gene Thiessen, both of Clearwater, Minn.; and a sister, Irene (Myles) Marquette, Monticello, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Bertha (Buller) Thiessen and a daughter, Linda Lano. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Detroit Lakes, with Pastor Bill Meyer officiating. Interment icon will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Arnold R. Wentela
Arnold R. Wentela, a lifetime Waino area resident, died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at St. Mary's MedicaI Center, Duluth. He was born on April 16, 1918, to Richard and Lydia Wentela, graduated from Waino High School and served in the U.S.A.A.F. in Italy during World War II. On June 1, 1940, he married Violet Ruth Ojala and they farmed the Wentela family farmstead for over 50 years. He was active in community service as the Brule town assessor, town supervisor, member of the Brule Historical Society and the sexton of the Everrest Cemetery Association. He was a member of the Waino Pioneer Chapel and the Veterans of Foreign Wars' Iron River Post #10197. He is survived by his granddaughter, Renee; a sister, Esther Anderson, Iron River; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Terry and Ed Burhans. He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet, in 1997; a son, Jim, in 1996; his parents, two brothers and four sisters. Visitation begins Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, Oulu, and continues there Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral. The Rev. Gloria Friedrich will officiate. Interment icon will be in Everrest Cemetery in Waino with full military honors accorded by the VFW Iron River Post #10197. Arnold B. Peterson
Arnold B. Peterson, 79, a resident of 804 26th Ave. East, Superior, died on Sunday, April 11, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born on Aug. 22, 1919, in Superior, to Anton and Emma (Estenson) Peterson and was raised in Poplar. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and had served overseas in Iwo Jima. He was a building contractor and also had owned and operated Arnold B. Peterson Lumber and Supply and the Poplar Lumber Co. He was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church; Superior Lodge #236, F&AM; Diamond City Chapter #65, R&AM; Superior Council #30, R&SM; Superior Commandery #25, Knights Templar; AAD Temple of the Shrine, Duluth; Shrine Band; Superior Shrine Club; a former member of the Twin Ports Lumberman's Association; a 50-year member of the United Commercial Travelers' Superior Council #333, and the Henry S. Blomberg Post #847, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 52 years, Jane, who died on March 19, 1999. Survivors include a son, Dennis (Eleanore) Peterson of Superior; a brother, Gerald (Peggy) Peterson of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; two sisters, Mildred Widness of Duluth and Evelyn Branstrom of Edina, Minn.; two grandsons, Aaron B. and Greg J. Peterson of Superior; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home, where Masonic services will be accorded at 7 p.m. by the officers and members of Superior Lodge #236, F&AM. Visitation continues on Thursday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral. Interment icon will be in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery. Florence Donna (Blixt) Scotford
Florence Donna (Blixt) Scotford, 69, Duluth, died Sunday, April 11, 1999 in St. Mary's Hospice Unit in Duluth. She was born in Duluth on Sept. 10, 1929 and graduated from Duluth Denfeld High School with the Class of 1947. Mrs. Scotford was an avid golfer, having been a member of the Lester Park Women's Golf League for over 30 years. A born-again Christian, she delivered meals on wheels, visited the elderly at area nursing homes and helped out at the soup kitchen. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Susan Millington, and a grandson, Gary Johnson. Surviving are her husband, Taylor; their daughter, Pamela (Dan) Bergstrom; two children from her previous marriage to Rodney K. Johnson, Catherine (Duane) Davenport and Paul (Carol) Johnson; seven grandchildren, Sheila Carrasquillo, Daniel (Roberta), Lisa and Ryan Johnson, Josephine, Jeffrey and Jessie Millington; four great-grandchildren, Robert Jr. and Savannah Carrasquillo and Gary and Jory Johnson; her sister, Abby (Jim) Scarcella; and cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Resurrection Fellowship on Woodland Avenue in Duluth, followed by a light meal in the church basement. Interment icon will be Wednesday morning in Forest Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Fred Olson Mortuary in Duluth.

Delphine Hagstrom
Delphine Hagstrom, 84, Upsala, Minn., died Thursday, April 1, 1999, in Little Falls, Minn. She was born July 13, 1914, to Paul and Irene (Kieser) Heimerl in Winsted, Minn. She attended Holy Trinity School in Winsted and Eden Valley High School. Mrs. Hagstrom had been employed by Honeywell and Finishing Equipment Companies when she resided in Minneapolis. After moving to Upsala, she became a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Upsala Christian Mothers. She loved animals, playing the organ and knitting. Survivors include her husband, Winton of Upsala; a son, Stephen Fink, Minneapolis; one brother, Ramon Heimerl of Greeley, Colo.; and a sister, Lee Draver of Superior. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Sidney 'Sid' Fink and a brother, Robert Heimerl. The funeral took place Monday, April 5 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Upsala, with Fr. Greg Mastey officiating. Interment icon was in the Minnesota Veterans Cemetery, Camp Ripley, Minn. Casketbearers were John Stafney, Lehner Linus, Paul Gerads, Leo Hartung, Lloyd Hagstrom and Marcellus Theisen. Arrangements were handled by the Brenny-Johnson Funeral Home in Upsala.

Floyd Joseph Dondineau
Floyd Joseph Dondineau, 88, a lifelong resident of Bennett, died Monday, April 12, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. He was born July 11, 1910, in Superior to Elza and Anna (Peterson) Dondino. He attended the local Bennett School, and was married in 1931 to Rosalie Shuda. They made their home in Bennett and were longtime members of St. Benedict's Catholic Church until its closure when they joined St. Pius X Parish in Solon Springs. Mr. Dondineau was a longtime golf enthusiast and a member of the Norwood Country Club. He retired from the Douglas County Highway Department after a career that spanned 21 years. During that time he held the positions of truck driver and gradall operator, and was patrol superintendent when he retired on July 31, 1975. Survivors include three daughters, LaVerne (Joseph) Treb, Lakeland, Fla., Jackie (Don) Poole, Bennett, and Rita (Curtis) Hutchens, Duluth; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on Feb. 27, 1994, and brothers, James and George. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Jim Powers at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Solon Springs. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Brown Funeral Home, Solon Springs, with a Scripture and Knights of Columbus service beginning at 7:30 p.m. Interment icon will be in the Bennett Cemetery.

Joseph Balcer
Joseph Balcer, 84, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, in Superior. Born Jan. 9, 1915, in Superior, he had been a lifelong Wentworth and Superior area resident. He was employed by Burlington Northern Railroad and the former Great Northern Railroad for many years. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Belgian Club, the Kosciuszko Fraternal Aid Society and the Burlington Northern Veterans Association. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Adrianne Van Massenhove on June 28, 1941, in Superior, and they recently celebrated 57 years of marriage. In addition to his wife Adrianne, he is survived by two sons, Joseph Balcer Jr., Superior, and Richard Balcer, Town of Superior; one daughter, Linda Balcer, Minneapolis; five grandchildren; two great-granchildren; two sisters, Helen Youngberg and Jessie Granberg, both of Superior; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ignace and Antonina Balcer; one daughter, Marie Ann Balcer; one brother, Stanley Balcer; and three sisters, Clara Ronchi, Agnes Hizinski and Frances Laski. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Friday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with a Scripture Service scheduled for 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for noon on Saturday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with the Rev. Dean Buttrick as celebrant. Interment icon will be in St. Francis Cemetery.

Sadie Fortin
Sadie Fortin, 86, died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. Born Dec. 25, 1912, in Superior, she had been a lifelong resident. She was employed for many years as a nurse's aide. She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King and the Pocahontas Club. She is survived by niece Mary K. Manning, Bellingham, Wash.; a great-niece, Denise; a great-nephew, Shawn; and several cousins, including Jim McHugh of Superior. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex, in 1997; her mother, Catherine (McHugh) White in 1952; her father William White, in 1945 and a sister, Beatrice Manning, in 1938. Visitation will be Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Cathedral of Christ the King with the Rev. Daniel Dahlberg, pastor, as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Andrew I. Peterson
Andrew I. Peterson, 55, of 17 E. 3rd St., died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. Born Dec. 29, 1943 in Superior, he was a lifelong Superior resident. Mr. Peterson was employed as a cook by the Androy Hotel, retiring this past March due to health problems. He married Irene F. Washa on June 17, 1972 in Superior. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed his dogs and being involved in the Arrowhead Dog Training School in Duluth. He also loved to paint wildlife scenes. Surviving are his wife, Irene; three sisters, Ann Gilmer, Aurora, Colo., Mattie Moran, South Milwaukee, Wis., and Patti Markuc, Antigo, Wis.; two brothers, Thorwald Peterson, South Range, and Iver Peterson, Dallas, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thorwald and Stephania Peterson, and three sisters, Mary Palmer, Doris Jarvi and Karen Lawler. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. that day. Fr. Dan Dahlberg of Cathedral of Chris the King will officiate, with interment to be in the Gordon Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army Food Shelf.

Clarence H. Tollefson
Clarence H. Tollefson, 87, of 3103 John Ave., died Thursday, April 15, 1999, in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Aug. 5, 1911 in Superior, he was a lifelong city resident. Mr. Tollefson retired from the Soo Line Railroad in 1976 as a carman after many years of service. He was a longtime member of Christ Lutheran Church and was also a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Marie; two sons, Clarence A. (Donna) Tollefson, Solon Springs, and Larry Tollefson, Superior; one sister, Irene Skomrock, Superior; a brother, Russell (Dodie) Tollefson, Superior; six grandchildren, Kim (Alain) Pensini, Shoreview, Minn., Darla (Steve) Arndt, Elk River, Minn., Deanna (Kevin) Remington, Superior, Debra Tollefson, Superior, Scott (Lynn) Tollefson, Duluth, and Jeff Tollefson, St. Paul; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ida and Andrew Tollefson and a sister, Irma Stenstrom. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Sunday in Downs Funeral Home. Helen M. Hanson
Helen M. Hanson, 80, formerly of Superior, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at Spooner Nursing Home. She was born in Superior on Nov. 19, 1918, to Carl and Ellen (Anderson) Norberg, and had resided in Superior for most of her life. She married Norman Hanson on May 17, 1941, in Superior. She had been a member of Bayside Baptist Church and the South Superior Homemaker's Club. She retired from Superior Memorial Hospital in 1982 as a licensed practical nurse. Surviving are her husband Norman, of Spooner; three sons, Doug (Carol) Hanson, Wascott, David (Kathy) Hanson, Spooner, and Stephen Hanson, Wascott; a daughter, Linda (Bill) Rask, South Range; a brother, Halvor Norberg, El Cajon, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Wilfred Norberg. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bayside Baptist Church in Superior, where visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service. The Rev. Leonard Carlson will officiate. Pallbearers will be Adam, Aaron, Scott and Jeff Hanson, Dave Krivinchuk and Todd Osterheus. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spooner Nursing Home. Ethel M. White
Ethel M. White, 87, a resident of Spooner, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at Maple Manor Health Care Center, New Richmond. She was born Aug. 23, 1911, to William and Esther (Johnson) Thompson in Shell Lake and was reared in Spooner. She was a 1929 graduate of Spooner High School. She received her teaching degree at Superior, and later received her bachelor's degree at Superior State University. On June 21, 1935, she was united in marriage to Donald A. White in Madison. They resided at Spooner. She taught grades one through three at Earl, Sarona and at the Hammil School, Spooner. She retired in 1975 having taught over 30 years. She enjoyed traveling and spending summers on Big McKenzie Lake. Her husband Donald preceded her in death on June 9, 1995. She was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church, Spooner, and its guild and was also a member of the Spooner Study Club. She is survived by her son, Donald W. (Doreen) White of Roberts, Wis.; her daughter, Sharon (DeWayne) Johnson, Anoka, Minn.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Harriet Watrude, Minneapolis; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Donald, she was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Barbara Anderson, in 1991. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, Spooner, with the Rev. Alan P. Coudriet officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Spooner Cemetery. Serving as casketbearers will be her eight grandchildren: Brian Anderson, Beth Kelly, Bridget Kling, Kara Noll, Corey and Kailee White and Brent and Bart Johnson. Francis E. Tucker
Francis E. Tucker, 77, 3115 John Ave., died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. Born Oct. 16, 1921, in Superior, he was a lifelong city resident. He married Marjorie Davis on Dec. 28, 1948, in Superior, at Cathedral of Christ the King. He was employed for 47 years on the Great Lakes, retiring in 1987 from the Cleveland Cliffs Company as a first mate. He had completed schooling for his captain's license. He also served in the Merchant Marines. He was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King, the Knights of Columbus and the American Maritime Officers. He was an avid golfer and bowler. Surviving are his wife Marge; two daughters, Susan (Michael) Poole, Portland, Ore., and Kathleen (John) Slazas, Fort Benning, Ga.; six grandchildren; four brothers, Thomas, Newport, Ky., David, Ontonagon, Mich., Charles, Prairie Farm, Wis., and Michael, Superior; two sisters, Mary Ann Van Damme and Patricia Tucker, both of Superior; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Bridget Tucker; four brothers, Joseph, James, John and Patrick Tucker; and a sister, Margaret White. A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Cathedral of Christ the King with the Rev. Dan Dahlberg as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Helen Mae Schuenemann
Helen Mae Schuenemann, 74, a resident of Superior, died Friday, April 16, 1999 at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. She was born May 4, 1924, in Drummond, to George and Clara (Christenson) McCormick. On Sept. 20, 1943, she married Alfred Schuenemann in Milwaukee. Survivors include her husband, Alfred, Superior; a son, Rick (Robin) Schuenemann, Crystal, Minn.; three daughters, Bonnie Jean Schuenemann and Joyce Staves, both of Virginia, Minn., and Linda (Arvo) Lehto, Loxahatchee, Fla.; five grandchildren; and a sister, Colleen McCormick, Claremont, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Wascott Cemetery, with the Rev. Craig Nelson, pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church in Minong, officiating. Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs is handling the arrangements.

Donald E. Strommer
Donald E. Strommer, 72, of 2818 Friendship Street, Iowa City, Iowa, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, in his residence of heart failure. He was born Aug. 2, 1926, in Viborg, S.D., the son of Eric E. and Nathalia E. (Nelsen) Strommer. He graduated from Isle (Minn.) High School in 1944 and received his bachelor of science degree from St. Cloud (Minn.) State University in 1950 and his master of education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1960. He was united in marriage to Jerine L. Thomas on Aug. 29, 1948, in Isle, Minn. He was a teacher and coach in the Superior public schools from 1950-1963 and a counselor and principal for Cloquet, Minn., public schools from 1963-1970. Moving to Iowa City in 1970, Strommer was an educational consultant at National Computer Systems (then Westinghouse Learning Corp.) until his retirement in 1989. He then began his own educational consulting company, working with schools across the country for 10 years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in Germany from 1945-1946. He was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, St. Mark's United Methodist Men, Iowa City, American Legion Post #17, Johnson County Veterans Commission and Fairview Golf Course. Survivors include his wife Jerine; three sons, Thomas (friend Deborah Best) Strommer of Bemidji, Minn., Scott (friend Eilene Johnson) Strommer, Toledo, Iowa, and Mark (Lisa) Strommer of Iowa City; five daughters, Karla (Chance) Bartholomew, Vicki (Joe) Lalla, Julie (Rod) Sparks and Becki (John) Sammons, all of Iowa City and Lori (Tom) Pace of West Liberty, Iowa; a sister, Marjorie (Harold) Angle of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two brothers, Palmer (Millie) Strommer of Baker City, Ore., and Clifford (Leona) Strommer of Surprise, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Bess Strommer of Puyallup, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his foster parents, George and Stella Munson, and two brothers, Erling and Glenn. A memorial service will be Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Iowa City. Officiating will be the Rev. Harlan GiIlespie. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery with military rites provided by the Coralville American Legion Post #721 and assisted by local military organizations. Patricia J. "Patty" Hoglund
Patricia J. "Patty" Hoglund, 62, of 20th Avenue East and 8th Street, Duluth, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, in her home. She was born June 28, 1936, in Duluth. She is survived by her mother, Lois Nelson, of Superior; her stepmother, Hazel Hoglund, of Duluth; a half brother, Richard Hoglund, of Washington, D.C.; and a half sister, Bonnie Anderson, of Superior; aunts Ruth Gossen and Inga Albright, of Bradenton, Fla., and June Pank and Florence Miller, of Superior; a niece; four nephews; several cousins, relatives, friends, and her family at R.S.I, Oregon Creek. She was preceded in death by her father, Justa Hoglund, in 1997, and her brother, Gary Hoglund in 1967. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until the 12:30 p.m. service at Fred Olson Mortuary Chapel in Duluth. Burial will be at Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown.

Leonora S. Sieler
Leonora S. Sieler, 82, a longtime resident of Hibbing, Minn., formerly of Virginia, Minn., and Superior, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at the Golden Crest Nursing Home in Hibbing. She was born March 28, 1917, in Tripp, S.D., the daughter of Fred and Christina Schuler. She attended school in Tripp and later moved to Hibbing. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, and following her retirement she worked in the Head Start Program as a volunteer grandmother for over 15 years. She is survived by five sons, Elmer, of Aurora, Minn., Walter (Bobbie), of Stevensville, Mont., Leslie "Earl," of Santa Clarita, Calif., Robert (Cindy), of Superior and Larry (Gloria), of Ventura, Calif.; a sister, Clara Boyce, of Virginia; 15 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Albert Jr.; a granddaughter, Stacie Sieler; a grandson, Scott Sieler; a great-granddaughter, Crystal Peterson; a sister, Helen Eisenbrown; and three brothers, Robert, Edwin and Jake Schuler. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home in Hibbing, and will continue from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church of Hibbing. The Rev. Mark Palmer will officiate. Interment icon will follow in the Hibbing Park (Maple Hill) Cemetery. Casketbearers and honorary casketbearers will be grandchildren.
