Dorothy V. Riedl, 80, Iron River, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at the Villa Marina Nursing Home, Superior, of leukemia. She was born Aug. 20, 1917, in Iron River to Roy E. and Della (Vacha) Bousley. She was graduated from Iron River High School in 1935 and Stout Institute in Menomonie in 1940. She taught school in Flint, Mich., and Iron River. On Jan. 18, 1941, she was married to Leonard J. Riedl in Flint and they owned and operated the Iron River Hardware and Lumber Co. from 1957 to 1973. Mrs. Riedl was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Iron River, and the Green Thumb Garden Club, Iron River. She is survived by a daughter, Carol (Lynn) Larsen, DePere; a son, James (Barbara) Riedl, Iron River; five grandchildren, Mary, Terry, Tracy, Kurt and Tom; four great-grandchildren, Haley, Mitchell, Hannah and Alex, and a sister, Jean Turnock, Sioux Falls, S.D. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Leonard, in 1987. The funeral will be at 7 p.m., Friday, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Fr. Barry Schneider officiating. Interment icon will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Iron River. Visitation will be 4:30 to 7 p.m., Friday, at the church with a 5:30 p.m. vigil service. The Schafer-Mountain Funeral Home, Ashland, is in charge of arrangements.

Stanley J. Sawicki, 71, 1317 Cedar Ave., Superior, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at the Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior. He was born Feb. 13, 1927, in Superior and was a lifelong resident. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He retired in 1986 as a carman inspector for the Burlington Northern Railroad where he was employed for over 40 years. Mr. Sawicki was a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King, a former member of the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and a member of the Thaddeus Kosciuszko Brotherhood. He was an avid ice fisherman. He married June Moller on Feb. 26, 1949. He is survived by his wife, June; two sons, Michael Sawicki, Vacaville, Calif., and Stephen (Nancy) Sawicki, Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Barb (David) Tunell, Superior; 11 grandchildren and two sisters, Sister Laetitia, Stevens Point, and Jeanne Fletcher, Lawrence, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Alice Sawicki; a daughter, Kathy Sweney; a granddaughter, Trinity Sawicki; two brothers, Paul Matan and Chet Sawicki, and three sisters, Stella LaRue, Helen Bart and Alice Parise. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, at the Cathedral of Christ the King with Rev. Fr. Dan Dahlberg the celebrant. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., Sunday, at the Downs Funeral Home with a wake service at 7 p.m.

Edith L. Denno, 71, N. Basswood Ave., Duluth, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. Born in Superior on March 8, 1927, to Alvin and Mabel (Johnson) Garrison, she was a 1945 graduate of Superior Central High School. Mrs. Denno had been employed by Independent School District #709 and retired as treasurer of Duluth Central High School in 1989. She was a member of Resurrection Fellowship Church, a past president of Lowell Elementary PTA and had been a Cub Scout den mother. She married Elwood "Bud" Denno in Superior on Jan. 22, 1949. She loved fishing with her sisters and gardening at home. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Bradley; a brother, Ernest and an infant sister, Evelyn. She is survived by her husband, Elwood "Bud"; a son, Mark (Marilyn) Denno, of Cloquet; a brother, Roger (Louise) Garrison, Salem, S.C.; sisters, Gloria (Robert) Hizinski and Delores White, both of Superior; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Denno, Dallas, Texas; one granddaughter, Rachel Denno, Dallas; step-grandsons, Daniel and Timothy Busnik, Cloquet; and many nieces and nephews. Private family services will be conducted at the Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home in Duluth, with interment to be in Sunrise Cemetery, Duluth.

Mary Homsey, 94, formerly of Conner’s Point in Superior, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, in Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center in Superior. She was born Nov. 1, 1903, in Suwalki, Poland and was a housekeeper, short order cook and raised poultry for many years before her retirement. She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King, and had been a member of the former St. Louis Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent and Annie Majeski, a son, Stanley Homsey, four brothers, Frank, Joseph, John and Vincent Majeski, and a sister, Annette Ostazeski, Surviving are a daughter, Agnes Dunning, Superior; a sister, Helen Carlson, Superior; a brother, James Majeski, in Indiana; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral Friday in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Fr. Andrew Ricci will officiate. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Elizabeth M. Elizabeth M. Jensen, 94, of 1500 N. 34th St., died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, in St. Francis Home South. She was born March 7, 1904, in Springfield, Minn., and resided in the Town of Oakland and Superior for most of her life. Mrs. Jensen is survived by a daughter, Joyce (Raymond) Larson, Superior; a son, Harry (Beverly) Jensen, Superior; three grandchildren, Jane (Larry) Tempelis, John (Nancy) Larson and Brian Larson; five great-grandchildren, Mindy, Eric and Peter Tempelis and Michaela and Andrew Larson. Jean M. (LaValley) McDonough, 51, St. Petersburg, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, in St. Petersburg. Born March 6, 1947, in Superior, she was a longtime Superior resident before moving to Florida. Mrs. McDonough was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in St. Petersburg and its church choir. She is survived by her husband, Mike, St. Petersburg; her parents, Al and Romayne LaValley, Superior; three brothers, John (Pam) LaValley, Lee, N.H., Dave (Mary Jo) LaValley, Superior, and Dick (Lyn) LaValley, Superior; one sister, Carol Larson, Superior; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Sally O'Hare, St. Petersburg. Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Superior with a memorial Mass at noon. Fr. James Tobolski, pastor, will be celebrant. Svea Therasia Liljegren, 80, a resident of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Lake Nebagamon, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, in Scottsdale. She was born Oct. 15, 1917, in Stanton, Iowa to Hjalmer and Beda (Roll) Johnson. Mrs. Liljegren and her husband Carl lived in the Chicago area for many years and moved to California in the early 60's. They were the original owners of the Green Acres Golf Course in Lake Nebagamon. She lived in Watsonville, Calif., and Sun City, Ariz., before moving to Scottsdale two years ago. She is survived by several nieces and nephews including a nephew, Donald Liljegren and his wife, Jean of Scottsdale, with whom she had made her home for the past several years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, on Oct. 26, 1984, a daughter, Carla, July 13, 1969, a brother, LeRoy Nelson, and two sisters, Evelyn Liljegren and Ruth Johnson. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Nebagamon, with Rev. Lee Boleman officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment icon will be in the Lake Nebagamon Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Don Harvey Sr., Leo Yrjanainen, Bruce Miller and Dan, Bob, Don, Ken and Randy Liljegren. Ethel J. Pattee, 70, of Butler Ave., died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, in her residence. She was born in Superior on Feb. 16, 1928, to Roy and Geraldine Winters. She was a homemaker and had resided in Superior most of her life. Mrs. Pattee was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Eugene, Charles and Norman Winters. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Benny; sons, Ronald, Donald, and Randy of Superior, and Robin of Fargo, N.D.; daughters, Geraldine Peterson, Laura Marquardt, Theresia Cheselski, Denise Henry, and Mary Kruse, all of Superior; brother, Walter Winters of Superior; sisters, Barbara West of Bemidji, Minn., Lois Mattson of Superior and Laurel Van putten of Racine; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. in the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home, where funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Rev. Waldo Johnson will officiate, with interment to be at a later date.

Ralph A. Paul, 75, Columbia Heights, Minn., formerly of Superior, died on Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998. He attended Marshall High School through the 11th grade and graduated from Superior Central High School. He also graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1947. Mr. Paul was past president of the NE Suburban Shrine Club, member of the Scottish Rite, Zuhrah Shrine Band since 1955 and the Shrine German Band. He was a past leader of Cub Scout Pack No. 92. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Eleanor; five children, Carolyn (Phil) Durand of Fridley, Minn., Jeffrey (Nancy) Paul, Woodbury, Minn., Ronald (Vicki) Paul, Blaine, Minn., Patricia (Merv) Grindahl, Waseca, Minn., and Rebecka (Paul) Corcoran of Shoreview, Minn.; a sister, Shirley (Herman) Neeck, Park Falls; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Kathleen. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 9185 N. Lexington Ave., Circle Pines, Minn., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society of America. Mabel “Toni” O. Nolan, 94, 1800 New York Ave., formerly of 1306 Birch Ave., died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at St. Francis Home in the Park. Born March 22, 1904, in Clearwater County, Minn., she was a longtime Superior resident. Nolan was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and the Indianhead Handicap Club in Superior. Surviving are a son, Larry (Patricia) Nolan, Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Caroline Crumb, her husband, Kenneth Nolan, in 1974, and a daughter, Kennadine, in 1991. A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday in Cathedral of Christ the King, where visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Fr. Andrew Ricci will be the celebrant and interment follows in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home.

Melvin Sundholm, 77, of the Town of Lakeside, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital of Superior after a brief illness. He was born in Lakeside Township, where he resided throughout his life. He married Evelyn Alholm of Cloverland, Wis., on Nov. 19, 1949. Sundholm worked variously for DM & IR Railway and Fraser Shipyards, and most recently until his retirement, was employed as a listman by the Duluth-Missabe Ore Docks. He was a member of Transportation-Communications International Local #319. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Josefina Sundholm, and an infant son, Alan Duane. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; three sons, Marvin, of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Mark and Craig, both of rural Lakeside; one grandson, John Alan; and one sister, Myrtle Olson, St. Louis Park, Minn. No memorial service or visitation are planned. Arrangements are by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.

Gertrude L. Wigren, 82, of Ryan Road, Duluth Township, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born and raised in Duluth, moved to Port Wing, where she lived most of her life until returning to Duluth in 1991. She married Arvid S. Wigren in 1934, and he died in 1982. She was a dietitian/cook at the South Shore Schools in Port Wing for 28 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Port Wing. She is survived by a daughter, Arlene (Walter) Carter of Duluth; a son, Dale (Marilyn) Wigren of Valparaiso, Ind.; three sisters, Sigrid Ostlund of Hermantown, Margaret Johnson of Grand Rapids, Minn., and Lorraine (Gerald) Rood of Saginaw, Minn.; grandchildren Kay, Ron, Julie, Randy, Lynn, Cory and Anne; great-grandchildren Connie, Brandon, Amber, Teresa, Robert, Mary, Ben, Jessica, Josie and Sam; great-great-grandchiIdren Brianna, Laine and Gabe; and many nieces and nephews. Alta A. Kelly, 84, Superior, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. She was born April 25, 1914, in Superior. Kelly was a retired clerk for the Burlington Northern Railroad. She was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church and its Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Also, she was a member of the Transportation Communications International Union. She was preceded in death by her husband James P. in 1982; a brother, Everard Scanlon, in 1984, and her parents, John and Emma (Burmeister) Scanlon. She is survived by a daughter, Elaine M. (Carl E.) Hedenblad, Superior; four sons, James P. (Renee) Kelly, Silver Bay, Minn.; John W. (Suzanne) Kelly, Brooklyn Center, Minn., and Thomas M. (Cheryl) Kelly and Edward G. (Chris) Kelly, both of Superior; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Alice Scanlon, Cromwell, Minn. Ethel N. Wojtoff, 85, 1800 New York Ave., Superior, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born Sept. 25, 1912, in Dunn County, Wis. She was a longtime Superior resident. Wojtoff was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church and its Lydia Circle. She was active in the D.A.V. Auxiliary and was a member of the X.Y.Z. Club. She served as a volunteer for the Salvation Army Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph in 1956 and by two sons, David Steven in 1956 and Harry T. in 1983. She is survived by a son, Joseph (Sandra) Wojtoff Jr., Superior; three daughters, Irene M. (Brian E.) Schmidt, Foxboro, and Wendy Wojtoff and Kathrine Lindseth, Superior; a brother, LeRoy “Leo” Thompson, Cedar City, Utah; three grandsons and two granddaughters. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Concordia Lutheran Church, the Rev. Scott Ludford officiating, with interment in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. Patricia Calhoun Falstad, 95, Edina, Minn., died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, in Edina. She was born March 17, 1903, in Superior, and was a longtime resident of Superior, Lake Nebagamon and St. Petersburg Beach, Fla. She was a graduate of Superior Central High School and was a member of the Booster Club. She was also a member of the Hammond Avenue Presbyterian Church, the Superior Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and P.E.O. Chapter AD. She was a secretary at the Door Catch Co. and the Great Northern Railroad until her marriage on July 5, 1928, to Ralph L. Falstad, a certified public accountant. The Falstads celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary the summer before Mr. Falstad’s death on Feb. 14, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary McGhie Calhoun; a son, Thomas Falstad; two brothers, James and Murray, and four sisters, Mae Gallinger Fyckes, Hazel Swanby, Willa Gallagher and Gladys Mather. She is survived by two sons, Robert (Kathy) Falstad, Hampton, N.J., and William (Peggy) Falstad, Fredonia, Kan.; a daughter-in-law, Caroline, Edina; three nephews, Jim Mather and James and Chad Calhoun; three nieces, Patty Mather Mueller, Patty Swanby Brilia and Mary Varden Gallinger Cole; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Downs Funeral Home, Pastor Joseph D. Brygger officiating, with interment in the Lake Nebagamon Cemetery. Beatrice M. Degerman, 86, formerly of Lake Nebagamon, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born May 3, 1912, in Canada, and lived most of her life in Duluth and Lake Nebagamon. She spent many years in the floral business, having owned Glad Acres in Lake Nebagamon, was manager of Shopper’s City floral department and was also a private custom floral arranger. She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Lake Nebagamon, a member of various area garden clubs and had written gardening articles in the former Evening Telegram. She also wrote a Lake Nebagamon newsletter. Surviving are a son, Richard (Kathleen) Norman, San Diego, Calif.; a grandson, Erik Norman, San Diego; a brother, Roy (Dorothy) Rusk, Lake Nebagamon; and a sister, Myrtle Sutherland, Superior. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Norman, her second husband, John Degerman, and a son, Roger Norman. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home, where visitation begins at 10 a.m. that day. The Rev. Lee Boleman, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, will officiate, with interment to be in Lake Nebagamon Cemetery.

Elsie Korhonen, 91, a lifelong Brule area resident, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. She was born May 16, 1907, in Brule, and owned and operated the family farm with her husband, Andrew Korhonen Jr., for many years before retirement. She was also a homemaker. She was a longtime member of the Waino Pioneer Chapel. She is survived by a daughter, Mary (Dennis) Smet, Brule; a brother, William (Doris) Byorni, Superior; a sister, Shirley Niemi, in California; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Korhonen Jr., a son, Lester Korhonen, three sisters and two brothers. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until noon Thursday in the Waino Pioneer Chapel. Interment icon will be in Everrest Cemetery in Waino. Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home in Superior is handling arrangements.

Roger W. Essen 73, formerly of Superior and Solon Springs, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, in the Clark County Health Care Center. He was born in Superior on March 13, 1925, to John and Esther (Ellison) Essen. He graduated from Superior Central High School and the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He was a former member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Superior and sang in the choir at Pilgrim. He also attended Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Solon Springs, was a member of the Solon Springs Lions Club, was a Chamber of Commerce Ambassador and had been active with Boy Scouts in Superior, receiving its Silver Beaver Award. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He had worked at Minnesota Power as a customer service representative until retirement. He is survived by his wife Patricia of Superior; sons Terry of Superior, Bart of Eau Claire and Brad of Solon Springs; a daughter, Lynn Wartgow of Eagle River, Wis.; step-children Brad, Joel, Bryan and Cory Miller, all of Duluth; a brother, John Essen of Graham, N.C.; a sister, Marge O'Keef of Omaha, Neb.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Keith, and his parents. Family services will be held. Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home, Superior.

Rev. Canon Winston F. Jensen, 68, Dublin, Texas, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, in Dublin. He formerly resided in Superior and served as Episcopalian priest here. He was born May 29, 1930, in Bismarck, N.D. He was graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 1951 from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. In 1955, he received a bachelor of divinity degree from Augustana Theology in Rock Island, Ill. He attended the General Seminary from 1960 to 1961. He was ordained a deacon of divinity in 1960 and a priest in 1961 in the Diocese of Long Island in New York. Fr. Jensen served parishes in New York, South Dakota and Maryland prior to becoming rector at the Church of St. Alban the Martyr in Superior from 1980 to 1993. While in Superior, he also served on the Superior Housing Authority and was a nature photographer. He served parishes in California and Texas after retirement and at the time of his death was serving Trinity Church in Dublin. He is survived by a brother, Waldon, Grand Forks, N.D., a niece and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a nephew. A Requiem Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of St. Alban the Martyr, 1510 New York Ave. Fr. Bartholomew Ryan, rector, and Fr. Bruce Gardner, Hayward, will officiate. Interment icon will be in Texas where Harrell’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Judith B. Sottysik, 84, 6118 Oakes Ave., Superior, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at St. Mary’s Hospital of Superior. She was born Jan. 23, 1914, in Superior, and was a longtime Superior resident. She was a former member of the Holy Assumption Catholic Church. She is survived by a daughter, Judy (LeRoy “Lee”) Clement-Lee, River Falls; two sons, Edmund Howard, Racine, and Paul (Pamela) Sottysik, Bensenville, Ill.; six grandchildren, three sisters, Florence Brennan, Wayzata, Minn.; Mary Verville, Superior, and Geraldine Callan, Gurney, Ill., and a brother, Anthony (Vera) Saladis, Webster. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1981. A private family memorial service is pending with the Downs Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
