June Dorkey
June Dorkey, 92, of Hawthorne died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Middle River Health Facility. She was born Nov. 14, 1906, in Duluth, and was a longtime Spooner and Superior resident. During the 18 years that she resided at Royalton Manor, she baked cookies for many of those years, to serve after the Catholic Masses on Tuesday afternoons. She was a former member of St. Patrick's and Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Churches. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court No. 1190. She was educated at Whitewater State University. She was employed by Duluth Business University for 13 years before moving to Spooner where she was employed as a business teacher at the high school. She started the FBLA at the school there and at Superior East High School. She accomplished all this while rearing five daughters. She did volunteer work at Spooner High School and St. Francis Nursing Home after her retirement. She was an avid swimmer at the YMCA until she was 89 years old. June is survived by five daughters, Barbara (James) Briggs, Tucson Ariz., Peggy Kerckhove, Gordon, Joan Canney, Wausau, Jackie (Dennis) Cole, Naples, Fla., and Charlotte (John) Kleber, Menominee Falls; 14 grandchildren, Mike, Pam, Becky, Mark, Paul, Gretchen, Jim, Dan, John, Jeff, Julie, David, Doug, and Sue; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward (Alice) Girzi, Lake Nebagamon; a sister, Jackie (Elwin) Ferguson, Clay Center, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Margaret Girzi; a sister, Dorothy M. Erickson; and two sons-in-law, Don Kerckhove and Dick Canney. The Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Assumption Catholic Church with the Rev. Ronald Olson, pastor, as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with a CDA rosary at 6 p.m. and a Scripture service there at 7 p.m.

Kenneth Wedenoja
Kenneth Wedenoja, 75, of Brule, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth. He was born on May 17, 1923, in Oulu, and was a longtime area resident. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was employed by the Boeing Airplane Corp. in Washington and by the Esko Case and Tractor Co. in Esko. He owned and operated his own garage in Iron River, "Ken's Garage." He was also employed in Ironwood, Mich., for five years with his brother in Melvin's Construction and by Hood Equipment in Iron River. He retired in 1984. He was an avid accordion player and he teamed up with his friend, Jerry. He enjoyed flying and piloted his own plane. He is survived by two brothers, Harold Wedenoja, Superior, and Melvin (Karen) Wedenoja, Ironwood; a sister, Beverly (Wes) Willoughby, Brule; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eino and Rose Wedenoja, and a sister, Lucille Johnson. Visitation will be on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Oulu. The memorial service will follow at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Gloria Friedrich officiating. Interment icon will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Oulu. Arrangements by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.

June Tinker
June Tinker, 72, 2117 E. 4th St., Superior, died Friday, April 30, 1999, in the Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born June 19, 1926, in Superior. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and a past member of Garden Club No. 12 and the Deborah Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by a daughter, Karen (James) Orleskie, Superior; a son, Greg (Wynn) Tinker, Rice Lake; and five grandchildren, Joel Welter, Kelly Tinker, Amy Orleskie, Sara Tinker and Adam Orleskie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn 'Tony' Tinker, in 1989, and by a daughter, Linda Welter, in 1982. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Terrence Stratton officiating. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Downs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Honorary pallbearers will be Barb Van Holbeck, Evelyn Bergquist, Dorothy and Ollie Laurila, Dan and Loretta Raprager and Rudy Johnson. Lief Mangseth
Lief Mangseth, 89, 5721 John Ave., Superior, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at his residence. He was born Sept. 17, 1909, to Gudrun (Dahle) and John Mangseth in Duluth. He was employed at the Fraser Shipyards as a boilermaker. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie No. 80, and the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Lodge No. 117. He is survived by his wife, Lucille 'Babe,' and by one niece and five nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Ethel Jacobson and Gladys Anderson. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Downs Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Henry Hanna officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of service. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Richard Jacobson, Ronald Jacobson, Mike Egan, Russ Putman and Frank Strahan.

Eddie J. Karlman
Eddie J. Karlman, 102, Superior, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at the Southdale Health Care Services. He was born July 16, 1896, in St. Cloud, Minn. He was a railroad worker and a farmhand all over the Midwest. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a former resident of St. Joseph's Residence and had also resided at Colonial Terrace. He is survived by several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Waldo Johnson officiating. Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

Valeria G. Phelps
Valeria G. Phelps, 88, Brooklyn Center, Minn., died Sunday, May 2, 1999. She was born May 17, 1910, in Superior. She loved the Lord and enjoyed four-footed creatures, especially cats, as well as people, flowers, tree and birds. She also enjoyed gardening and having coffee and doughnuts with her neighbors on her screen porch. She is survived by a sister, Florence Gradin, Superior. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Evans-Nordby Funeral Home in Brooklyn Center. Interment icon will be in the Clover Leaf Memorial Park Cemetery, Willmar, Minn.; visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, and 10-11 a.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.

William A. Ukkola
William A. Ukkola, 94, a longtime Maple resident, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born July 10, 1904, in Superior, and moved to Maple with his family in 1910. He was employed at Co-op Services Inc., in Maple for 37 years before retiring in 1968. His last 12 years of employment were that of manager. He also served as the town clerk for Maple for 43 years. In 1991 he moved back to Superior. He is survived by one son, Erland, Maple; three daughters, Virginia Tuura, Babbitt, Minn., Kay Kitch, Superior, and Bernice (Richard) Herm, Dearborn, Mich.; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Erick and Anna Ukkola; his wife, Lillian; one brother, Ted Ukkola; two sisters, Anna Eiroa and Elsie Velin; and a granddaughter, Shannon Tuura. He was also preceded in death by a special friend, Lila Mackie. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Botsford, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, Maple, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Maple. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Leo Matt Zalaznik Sr.
Leo Matt Zalaznik Sr., 86, a resident of Gordon, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. He was born May 16, 1912, in Worthington, Iowa, to Matt and Katherine (Braunacar) Zalaznik. On Nov. 25, 1950, he was married to Margaret Marie Suding in St. Paul. For several years Leo did construction work on the Island of Guam in the South Pacific. He moved to Wisconsin when he joined the Lake Superior Refining Co. as a process helper. He was promoted to stillman at the refinery in late 1951 and became maintenance foreman in January of 1956. He was promoted to assistant superintendent in July of 1958. He moved from Superior to Gordon when he retired in 1975. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gordon and had been chairman of the town of Gordon from 1985 to 1987. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, Gordon; three sons, James (Vicki) Hanna, Grand Rapids, Minn., John (Cherry) Hanna, Poplar, and Leo Zalaznik Jr., Escanaba, Mich.; a daughter, Zelda (David) Olaf, Wisconsin Rapids; eight grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; four brothers and three sisters. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jessie Hanna. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gordon. The Rev. Jim Powers will be the celebrant. Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the service. Interment icon will be in the Gordon Memorial Cemetery. Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs is handling arrangements.

Gladys H. Krause
Gladys H. Krause, 94, Menomonie, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at Friendship Manor in Menomonie. She was born April 26, 1905, in Iron River, the daughter of Joseph and Amelia (Steckbauer) Miesbauer. She grew up in that community and was graduated from Iron River High School. She received an Elementary Teaching Degree from Superior State Teachers College. She began teaching in Herbster where she met and married Lennard Krause of Mercer. She continued teaching elementary classes at Butternut, New London and Neenah, until her retirement in 1968. In 1973, Lennard and Gladys retired to their lake home in Mercer and spent the winters in St. Petersburg, Fla. In 1995, they both moved to Friendship Manor in Menomonie to be near their daughter, Patricia Traxler. Lennard died May 1, 1997. Gladys is survived by a daughter, Patricia (Eugene) Traxler, Menomonie; three grandchildren, Daniel (Susie) Traxler, Cave Creek, Ariz., Richard (Eva) Traxler, Minneapolis, and Diane (Mike) Schmoller, Cross Plains; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers, Joe, Bill, and Don Miesbauer; and four sisters, Angela Hansen, Anne Buran, Esther Miesbauer and Alice TiIlman. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m.,Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Menomonie with the Rev. Lyle Schulte officiating. Interment icon will be in the church cemetery. William Soderlund
William Soderlund, 79, South Range, died Monday, May 3, 1999, in rural Bayfield County. He was born March 31, 1920, in Gonvick, Minn., to Andrew and Mary Soderlund as the youngest of 16 children. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was employed at King Midas Flour Mill in Superior for many years before his retirement. He was a member of South Range Presbyterian Church and was a volunteer driver for the Fare Share Program for Family Forum. He also enjoyed traveling and playing cards. He is survived by two daughters, Diane (Jerome) Mason of Hudson and Lynda (Michael) Johnson of Superior; three sons, Thomas (Terry) Soderlund of Waupaca, Timothy (Judy) Soderlund of River Fails and David Soderlund of South Range; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Aimee Jondreau. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 1996, and several brothers and sisters. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. H. Duane Aslyn, pastor of Pioneer Parish, officiating. Interment icon will be in Poplar Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by local and area VFW and American Legion posts. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and resume at 1:30 p.m. Friday and run until the time of the service.

David W. Griffith
David W. Griffith, 25, of 4512 North Sheridan Rd., Chicago, Ill., formerly of Ashland, died Monday, May 3, 1999, in Chicago. He was born Sept. 4, 1973, in Ashland, the son of David L. King and Katherine M. Holmes. He was a professional mover for the Eagle Moving and Storage Co. in Chicago. Dave attended Ashland High School for two years and was graduated from the Flandreau Indian School located in South Dakota in 1992. He was a musician and was a professional drummer in his own band. He is survived by his mother, Katherine Griffith, Duluth; his father, Wayne Griffith, Superior; two brothers, Brian and Beau Griffith, both of Duluth; a sister, Kristi Griffith, Duluth; a son, Andrew Mayotte, Henderson, Nev.; and two daughters, Kaya Lynn Griffith, Villa Park, Ill., and Keela Violet Griffith, Chicago. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Josephine Deragon and Bernard Holmes, and by a brother, Shannon J. Griffith. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Odanah United Methodist Church with Alton "Sonny" Smart officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Odanah Cemetery. Frank B. Hlavka
Frank B. Hlavka, 83, 8 Royalton Rd., Superior, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, in the Hospice Unit of St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born June 26, 1915, in Chicago, Ill. He was a longtime Superior resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. He was employed for many years as a meatcutter at the former City Market. He was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. He is survived by his wife Louise; a daughter, Karen (Thomas) Skoog, Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Frank J. Hlavka, Chicago; and five grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. James Tobolski officiating. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Jason Howard Sr.
Jason Howard Sr., 62, 2005 Hughitt Ave., Superior, died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born Aug. 28, 1936, in Markham, Ill. He was graduated from high school and received an accounting degree from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He was married to Elaine Corbine on April 4, 1959, at Chicago, Ill. They recently celebrated 40 years of marriage. He served in the U.S. Air Force for over 20 years, retiring as master sergeant. Mr. Howard was a member of the Superior Knights of Columbus, the Douglas County Republican Party, the Henry S. Blomberg Post No. 847 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans Association plus he was active in the Indian Education Department of the School District of Superior. He is survived by his wife, Elaine, Superior; two sons, Jason Howard Jr., Superior, and Joseph Howard, Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Celeste Howard, Superior, and Susan Roberts-Passero, South Range; six grandchildren, Josh, Liz and Jenny Borgh, all of Superior, and Katrina, Maria and Mike Roberts, all of South Range; two brothers, Al (Jean) Howard, Chicago, and Jim (Edna) Howard, Western Springs, Ill.; two sisters, Lillian LeGault, Minneapolis, Minn., and Mary (Carter) Kirven, Streetman, Texas, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Helen Howard, and two brothers, Arthur and Ray Howard. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at the Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church with interment to be in the Calvary Cemetery. Cecelia Gorman
Cecelia Gorman, 81, Superior, died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at the St. Francis Nursing Home in the Park. She was born July 19, 1917, in Superior and, she was a lifelong Superior resident. She graduated from the former East High School. She was a member of the Burlington Northern Social Club and was an avid golfer, seamstress, hiker and jogger. She is survived by one brother, Edward Stack, Superior; two sisters, Helen Agnes Stack, Toledo, Ohio, and Ann Hennessey, Solon Springs, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Christopher; her parents, Stanley and Veronica Stack; four brothers, Walter, Bernard, Frank and Floyd Stack, and by one sister, Frances Nelson. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. James Tobolski, pastor, as celebrant. Kerri A. 'Karrot' Chilstrom, 39, 508 Clough Ave., Superior, died Saturday, May 8, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth, after a brief illness. She was born Feb. 2, 1960, in Superior. She formerly resided in Minneapolis, Minn., and returned to Superior in 1987. She was presently employed as a clerk at Falk's Lignell Pharmacy in Superior. Prior to that she was employed at Wisconsin State Tourist Information, the Wisconsin Community Action Program and at Betty Boop's Saloon. She is survived by her parents, Marilyn and Gerald Olson, Blaine, Minn.; a daughter, Tanya Chilstrom, Coon Rapids, Minn.; a son, Derrick Siegel, Superior; her fiance, Shawn Burdick, Superior; five sisters, Sherri Martin and Shelley Olson, both of Blaine; Tamara (Chuck) Jodell, Superior; Terrie Rainer, Spring Lake Park, Minn., and LorRae (Alan) Strickland, Andover, Minn.; six brothers, Gerald (Debbie) Tennier, Coon Rapids; Larry Tennier, Blaine; Gary (Deanna) Olson, Port Orchard, Wash.; Barry Olson, Lino Lakes, Minn.; Jeffrey Olson, Coon Rapids, and Mark (Jill) Olson, Ramsey, Minn.; her maternal grandmother, Ruth Smith, Superior, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Betty Jane Kending
Betty Jane Kending, 64, best remembered as a popular regional television celebrity and host of the Channel 3 program "Town and Country," died Saturday, May 8, 1999, in Duluth. She was born in Superior and was graduated from East High School. She received her Baccalaureate Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, and pursued graduate studies in Communications from Montana State University in Bozeman. She was employed as an elementary education instructor in Deerfield and Park Ridge, Ill., before moving to Austin, Minn., where she worked as a radio and television interviewer and commercial announcer. She then moved to Ironwood, Mich., where she was a charter member and co-founder of the "Theatre North" community theater and directed the children's theater as well as appearing in several productions. Betty furthered her theatrical interests through involvement with the Duluth Playhouse while residing in the Twin Ports area when she was named host of "Town and Country," a noon-hour variety and interview program airing on the local CBS affiliated television station KDAL where she held the title of Director of Women's Programming. She later produced and hosted the variety and interview program "Update" for the northeastern Minnesota cable television outlet TelePrompter. During this time she was appointed by the State Attorney General to a term of service on the Minnesota Advertising Review Board. She returned to the Chicago area where she obtained her real estate seller's license and was a broker with Eagle Real Estate Co. Her continued interest in children and education led her to employment with the Countryside Association providing care and services to children with special needs. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, John and Jeanette Bergstrom. She is survived by her daughters, Kathryn (Richard) Senn, Gayle (Brian) Hellinger and Alison Kending; a brother, Robert (Patricia) Bergstrom, as well as a niece and two nephews plus many friends in and around the Chicago area. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with Lois Pedersen of Our Savior's Lutheran Church officiating. Interment icon will be in the Graceland Cemetery with a gathering to follow at Our Savior's. Should friends desire, the family prefers memorials to the charity of the donor's choice in lieu of flowers. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Charlotte L. Anderson
Charlotte L. Anderson, 89, Chetek, formerly of Cameron, died Friday, May 7, 1999, at the Knapp Haven Nursing Home in Chetek. She was born Feb. 10, 1910, in Chetek to Sophus and Emma (Thompson) Severson. She was raised in the Chetek area and attended country school at Sioux Creek. On Nov. 29, 1933, she was married to Orville Anderson in Chetek. She was a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church in Cameron and was also very active in the WELCA and church circles. She was also a member of the Piper-Marsh Post No. 194 American Legion Auxiliary in Cameron. She enjoyed quilting, making jewelry and baking doughnuts. She is survived by two sons, Marvin (Barbara) Anderson of Wilson, N.C., and Robert (Donna) Anderson of Solon Springs; six grandchildren, Jodi, Jill, Julie, Brad, Steve and Cara; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mabel Thompson of Chetek; special friends Ed and Margaret Frankenberg and Verna Kisling all of Cameron, and nieces, nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Orville, on July 6, 1980, and by four brothers, Norris, Louis, Earl and Helmer Severson. The funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Monday, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Cameron, Rev. Dan Alexander officiating, with interment in the Faaberg Cemetery in the Town of Stanley. Arrangements were with the Mark Rausch Funeral Service, Cameron and Dallas.

Murelin 'Red' Greer
Murelin 'Red' Greer, 71, 402 E. 9th St., Superior, died Saturday, May 8, 1999, at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born May 14, 1927, in Minnesota and had been a Superior resident most of his life. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a former member of the Acacia Lodge No. 326, F&AM. He was an avid fisherman, snowmobiler and boxing fan. He was employed as an auto body repairman for Custom Auto Body for many years. He is survived by a stepbrother, Ken Tinker, Elk Grove, Calif.; three nieces, Darlyn (David) Abrahamson, Iron River; Marlyn (Tim) Peterson, Kaukauna, Wis., and Karri Dzick, Superior; two nephews, Dan (Sandra) Greer and Scott Greer, both of Superior, and special friends Leonard Abrahamson and Warren and Ethel Winslow. He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene, in 1993. The funeral will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the Downs Funeral Home, the Rev. Terrence Stratton officiating, with interment in the Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Elizabeth Sarah Halbur
Elizabeth Sarah Halbur, 79, a resident of Milwaukee since 1939, formerly of Solon Springs, died Sunday, May 9, 1999, at her home. She was born on Sept. 5, 1919, in Superior to Eli and Lucy (Taylor) LeMieux. Elizabeth had been employed as an accountant. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years, she was an avid reader and she enjoyed working crossword puzzles. Magdalen "Madge" Theresa Litwin
Magdalen "Madge" Theresa Litwin, 67, a resident of the Town of Gordon, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at the Spooner Health System. She was born Aug. 8, 1931, in Chicago, Ill., to Charles and Magdalen (Selenis) Jancauskas. On June 29, 1963, she was married to Victor Litwin in Chicago and they lived in Downers Grove, Ill., before moving to Gordon in 1992. Madge was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Altar Society in Gordon and the Gordon Volunteer Firemen's Auxiliary. She was very good at craft work and she loved all sports. She is survived by her husband, Victor, Gordon; two sons, Victor C. Litwin and Michael (Adrian) Litwin, both of Downers Grove; three daughters, Mrs. Timothy (Mary) Mayberry, Schiller Park, Ill.; Julia Litwin, Princeton, Ill., and Mrs. Bill (Barbara) Clarke, Rice Lake; nine grandchildren, Laura, Michelle, Benjamin, Matthew, Kyle, Ryan, Kevin, Krystin and John; a brother, Charles (Patricia) Jank, Burbank, Ill., and a sister, Mrs. Edward (Bernadette) Sluzewicz, St. Charles, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Francine Gulbinas. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gordon. Fr. Dorreen E. Thorpe (nee Lanswick), 87, St. Louis, Mo., died Saturday, May 8, 1999. She formerly resided in Superior. She is survived by a brother, James Lanswick, Sr., of Superior and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Stein; her second husband, Columbus Thorpe, and by a sister, Josephine I. Cole. A graveside service is planned for 1 p.m., Friday, at the Riverside Cemetery in Superior.

Clarence V. Johnson
Clarence V. Johnson, 77, of Florine Street, Duluth, died Sunday, May 9, 199, at his home following a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 9, 1921, in Duluth. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 3rd Army, 243rd Field Artillery Battalion C. He was married to Lorraine M. Nelson on July 22, 1950, at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Superior. He enjoyed spending time with his family and in his garden. He worked in the composing room of the Duluth Herald-Tribune and the Duluth News-Tribune for 35 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church, the Typographical Union Local No. 136, the 25 Year Club of the Duluth News Tribune and the Lake Avenue loafers. He was a former member of the Duluth News Tribune golf league, the Duluth Horse Shoe Club and the Happy Hoedowners square dance club. He was preceded in death by a brother, Warren Olson. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; two daughters, Cyrene (Gary) Baskett of Waco, Tex., and Bonita (Howard Blin) Byers, Mahtomedi, Minn.; two sons, Gary (Kristi) of Lake Elmo, Minn., and Brian (Sandee) of Champlin, Minn.; a brother, Rodger (Joyce) Olson of Duluth, and five grandchildren, Rachel and Ariana, Kristine and Andrea, and Reese. The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Salem Lutheran Church with interment in the Graceland Cemetery, Superior. Timothy Sharon
Timothy Sharon, 41, Superior, died suddenly on Tuesday, May 11, 1999, following a lengthy battle with epilepsy. He was born Sept. 1, 1957, in Superior, and was a lifelong resident. He was graduated from Superior Senior High. He was previously employed at Carlson Landscaping in Duluth and at the Friday Canning Co. in New Richmond. He was an active volunteer with the Salvation Army and enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He is survived by one brother, Richard Anthony "Tony" Sharon, Superior; six sisters, Barb Sharon, Cheryl (Bill) Downs, Lisa Tallberg and Karen (Randy) Silverness, all of Superior; Tracy Tallberg, San Diego, Calif., and Susie Tallberg, Orlando, Fla.; many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles and a special friend, Tara Atkinson, Duluth. He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Wilfred and Fern Sharon; his mother, Betty K. Tallberg; a nephew, Billy Downs IV; his maternal grandparents, Robert and Elizabeth Brannan; his paternal grandparents, Harry and Merilda Sharon, and a special friend, Scott Berry. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, at the William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home with the Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci of Cathedral of Christ the King officiating. Cora I. Byrnes
Cora I. Byrnes, 91, 1800 New York Ave., Superior, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at the St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born June 2, 1907, in Superior. She was graduated from the former Superior Central High School and attended the former Superior Normal School. She was a homemaker and a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and the East End Senior Citizens. She is survived by three sons, Daniel (Kay) Byrnes, Jr., Duluth; Patrick (Mary) Byrnes, Cedarburg, Wis., and Gerald Byrnes, Alameda, Calif.; two daughters, Roberta (Emil) Hoeft, Sparta, and Elizabeth 'Betty' (Douglas) Bender, Grass Valley, Calif.; 20 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Byrnes, Sr.; one daughter, Lois Mosentine, and by two sisters, Bertha Shouldice and Anna Helmer. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m., Friday, at the Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Dan Dahlberg officiating. Interment icon will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Marlene E. Glenn, 64, Holcombe, died Monday, May 10, 1999, at her residence. She was born Aug. 18, 1934, in Dana, Iowa, to Floyd and Hannah (Lass) Robinson. She moved to Glen Flora with her parents as a young girl and was graduated from Glen Flora High School. She was married to Lee Glenn on Nov. 15, 1952, in Ladysmith. They resided in Superior and Catawba before moving back to Holcombe. She was a member of the Holcombe United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She is survived by her husband, Lee; two daughters, Marla Sislo, Winter Spring, Fla., and Sharlee Glenn, Sanford, Fla.; a son, Michael (Jean) Glenn, Superior; two grandchildren, Rebecca (Frank) Green and Brian Glenn; one great-grandchild, Tristan Green; a sister, Vanita Dietlein, Sheldon, and nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday, at the Holcombe United Methodist Church in Holcombe, Rev. Don Drollinger officiating, with interment in the Holcombe Cemetery. Alberta Sundeen
Alberta Sundeen, 82, Duluth, formerly of Brimson, Minn., died Monday, May 10, 1999, at the Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center, Duluth. She was born Aug. 12, 1916, to Albert and Myrtle (Hutchins) Perkins in Blackduck, Minn. She was raised in Blackduck and Minneapolis, Minn., where she attended school. She was married to George Sundeen in 1937 at Fort Snelling. They resided in several locations during his military service. She moved to Brimson in August, 1970, and resided there until moving to an apartment in Duluth in 1997. She is survived by two sons, Donald (Patricia) and Charles, both of Duluth; two daughters, Sandra Williams, Lake Nebagamon, and Bonnie Anderson, Carlsbad, Calif.; 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, and by her parents. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, at the Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors with interment in the Brimson Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 1 p.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.

Arnold 'Arnie' Amundson
Arnold 'Arnie' Amundson, 83, Superior, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born June 29, 1915, in Superior and was a lifelong resident. He was married to Florence "Sis" Koehler in 1939 at Carlton, Minn., and they had their marriage blessed at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on May 3, 1967. He was hired at the Superior Post Office on April 1, 1943, as a vehicle operator maintenance assistant and he retired on Dec. 1, 1973, as a postal clerk after 30 years of service. Arnie and Sis operated the concessions at the Nemadji Golf Course in 1958 and 1959. He was a past worshipful master of the Itasca/Acacia Masonic Lodge and past president of the Nemadji Men's Club. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 80. He was a member of the Men's Bowling Association, one of the first men to bowl at the Waletzko Bowling Alley when it first opened and he was inducted into the Superior Bowlers Hall of Fame in the 1980's. Mr. Amundson is survived by his wife, Florence "Sis"; three sons, Douglas Amundson, Topeka, Kan.; James (Margaret) Amundson, Lake Nebagamon, and Richard (Lynn) Amundson, Eau Claire; five daughters, Bobby Jean (John) Peterson, Jr., Superior; Gail (Robert) Erdman, Superior; Patricia (Duane) Timo, Duluth; Dolores "Lorie" (Dennis) Frink, Superior, and Arlene Osterlund, Superior; two sisters, Betty Swanson, Sequim, Wash., and Muriel Vacha, Fargo, N.D.; 25 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Thomas Anthony Kellerhuis
Thomas Anthony Kellerhuis, 68, died Monday, May 10, 1999, in Iron River. He was born July 4, 1930, in Helena, Mont., and spent most of his childhood in Mahnoman, Minn. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the D Battery, 79th AAA Gun Battalion and A Battery 24th AAA Gun Battalion. He retired as a master sergeant with the 1-94 Armor Unit, of the Army National Guard. He was married to Gloria A. Briney on July 1,1950, and they raised their family in Duluth. Tom had a lifelong career with the Teamsters, including driving truck and serving as business agent and secretary-treasurer for Teamsters Local No. 346. In 1985, he was appointed director of the construction division at the International Teamsters office in Washington, D.C., and was an active chair with Joint Council No. 32. He retired in 1992 and resided in the Duluth and Iron River area. Tom was a member of the Duluth Polo Club, the Duluth Saddle Club and the United States Polo Assn. He enjoyed his family, horses and telling stories. He will be remembered for his cigars and toothpicks. He is survived by his wife, Gloria; three sons, Tony, Leesburg, Va.; Bruce (Tracey), Duluth and John, Iron River; four daughters, Marlene, Alma (John) Gamache and Anna (Steve) Verva, all of Duluth, and Michelle (Mark) Porter, Meadowlands, Minn.; his father, Anton, Duluth; a brother, Bernard (Dorla), Forest Lake, Minn.; two sisters, Geraldine Maus and Shirley Karo, both of Duluth; 13 grandchildren, Billie, Katie, Misty, Ray, Jessica, Max, Amanda, Keith, Tammy, Thomas, Tina, Aarron and Myra; two great-grandchildren, Mattison and Cydnee, and his adopted family, Ron (Kit) Davis, Gary (Sally) Hansen, LeRoy Lassard, Web Lathrop, Leroy Slater and Bucky Sipes. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lola. The funeral service will be at 3 p.m., Friday, at St. John's Catholic Church, Duluth, with interment in the Calvary Cemetery, Duluth. Willard Walter Salmi
Willard Walter Salmi, 83, of Bald Knob, Ark., and New Port Richey, Fla., died Tuesday, May 11, 1999. A longtime resident of Superior, he retired from the Central Cooperative Wholesale in Superior and also retired from the Burlington Northern ore docks. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Wiinikainen; his parents, Walter and Mayme (Johnson) Salmi; two brothers, Reino and Wilbert, and a sister, Ena Wiitanen. He is survived by two daughters, Ida E. Duffy, Bald Knob, and Irene E. Phernetton, Hayward; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Hugo, Superior, and Evald, Toivola, Minn., and a sister, Elona Wisti, Kirkland, Wash. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, at the Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Searcy, Ark. Loudell P. Kjenstad
Loudell P. Kjenstad, 61, Superior, died suddenly Wednesday, May 12, 1999 at his home. He was born Sept. 21, 1937, in Hendricks, Minn. He was employed by the Chicago Northwestern, the Great Northern and the Burlington Northern railroads for over 40 years. He was graduated from Brandt High School in 1956 and as a youth, he was involved in 4-H and sports. He was an active member of community churches, the BN Employees Club and was an avid gardener, a devoted grandfather and a sports fanatic. As an athlete he competed in Grandma's Half Marathon and was qualified and planning on attending the 1999 Senior Olympics in Florida. He also participated in curling at the Superior Curling Club, the Over Fifty Softball League and was a true Viking fan. He also enjoyed golfing and camping with his family. He is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Barb Kjenstad, Superior; three daughters, Wendy (Dan) Storevik, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Brenda Kjenstad-Johnson, Superior, and Heidi (Cory) Pylkka, Britt, Minn.; five grandchildren, Courtney, Ashley and Cody Johnson and Jessica and Amber Storevik; his mother, Christine Kjenstad, Astoria, S.D.; four sisters, Viola (Paul) Engebretson and Cecila (Earl) Phillips both of Hudson, Janice (Lester) Lunden, Toronto, S.D., and Linda (Jerry) Hogie, Astoria; a brother, Alvin (Karen) Kjenstad, Clear Lake, S.D.; in-laws Frank (Carol) Joslin, Frenchtown, Mont., and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Glen Lewis 'Ace' Matthews
Glen Lewis 'Ace' Matthews, 86, 525 Homecroft Ct., Superior, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born April 11, 1913, in Manistique, Mich. He moved to Superior as a young child and remained a Superior resident. He attended the Ericsson Grade School and was graduated from Superior Central High School. He attended the Superior State Teachers College where he was a member of the Fex Fraternity. In both high school and college, Glen was very active in sports. He was inducted into the University of Wisconsin-Superior Hall of Fame. He also attended several training schools with regard to his work in law enforcement. Glen started employment with the Superior Police Dept. on Feb. 22, 1941, and rose through the ranks to the positions of traffic sergeant, lieutenant, inspector and acting chief of police. He retired as assistant chief of police on Jan. 1, 1976. He was a member of the Superior Lodge No. 236 F&AM, the Commandry, the Superior Shrine Club, the Aad Temple of the Shrine in Duluth and he had also been a longtime member of the Aad Temple Patrol. He had been an active member of and deacon of the former First Baptist Church. He was secretary of the former Waletzko's Friday Night Bowling League for 30 years. He had also served as the director of the Superior Civil Defense Auxiliary Police. He was a director of the Wisconsin Professional Policemen's Association for 15 years and also served as the organization's vice president. Glen enjoyed bowling, golfing, the Green Bay Packers and made numerous trips to Lambeau Field. Most of all, he enjoyed his time with his family and friends. He was married to the former Grace G. Reynolds on Aug. 29, 1936, in Superior where the couple made their home for 63 years. Besides his wife, Glen is survived by two sons, Gerald (Jane), Green Bay, and Greg (Sheila), Superior; two daughters, Georgia (Ed) Hinsa, Green Bay, and Gail (Swede) Hanson, Spencer, Iowa; a sister, Lillian (William) Reed, Edmonton, Alberta; 12 grandchildren, Mike, Steve, Wendy, Shannon, Sarah, Stacy, Luke, Janine, Megan, Chad, Joshua and Shannon, and five great-grandchildren, Kelsey Jo, Beth, Cailyn, Zachary and Christian. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m., Saturday, at the Downs Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Stoskopf officiating. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.

James W. Androski
James W. Androski, 78, H.C.R. Box 37, Iron River, died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth. He was born March 25, 1921, in Superior, and was a longtime Superior resident. He had been an iron worker and was a member of Local No. 563 of the Ironworkers Union. He had resided in Chicago, Ill., and Minnesota for several years and had resided in Iron River the past 27 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Henry S. Blomberg Post No. 847, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by a special friend and companion of 37 years, Genevieve Wasilewski; five sons, James (Carol) and Brian (Leana 'Pete'), both of Iron River, Bruce (Sue) and Bradley (Loree), both of Superior, and Robert (Pam), Pasadena, Texas; three daughters, Janet (Tony) Gozanski, Superior, Mary (Gary) Peterson, Lakeside, and Debra (Gregg) Hillyer, Kenosha; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Leona (Martin) Tracy, Roseville, Minn., Muriel (Doug) Belshiem, Northridge, Calif., and Donna May (nee Andrews/'Bud') Brown, Canoga Park, Calif.. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys (Anderson) Androski; his parents, Michael and Cecelia (Koleodjeske) Androski; and two brothers, Frank and Edward Androski. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Andrew Ricci officiating. Interment icon will be in the Veterans Memorial Park, Greenwood Cemetery.
