Ellen I. Hoageson
Ellen I. Hoageson, 93, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, in Aftercare of Mentor, in Mentor, Ohio.
She was born in Superior to Aron and Gerda (Erickson) Pearson on April 21, 1906. She had worked as a clerk in Variety Store, in east Cleveland.
Mrs. Hoageson was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and enjoyed crocheting and caring for her home and yard.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harland P. in 1983, a son, Harland A., and a sister Anna.
She is survived by sons, Douglas (Marlene) of Richmond Heights, Ohio, Keith (Marian) of Mentor, Ohio, and Curtis (Diana) of Bolingbrook, Ill.; a daughter, Anne (Warren) Raymond of Arnold, Md.; a foster brother, Pat (Eleanor) Paones of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Warren and Judy Raymond, Deborah Heck, Suzanne Driscoll, Mark, Karen and James Hoageson, and Danielle Peden; great-grandchildren, Ian, Alan and Cody Heck, Christopher Driscoll and Alexis Peden.
Visitation will be held on Monday in the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home in Superior from 4-7 p.m. and continues on Tuesday in the Pilgrim Lutheran Church here from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral. Rev. Waldo S. Johnson will officiate with interment to follow in the family lot in Graceland Cemetery.
If friends so desire, the family prefers memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 3740 Mayfield Road, Cleveland, Ohio, 44121.
Stevan "Zec" Miladinov
Stevan "Zec" Miladinov, 86, of Gary, New Duluth, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999 in Lake Haven Manor, Duluth.
He was born Oct. 18, 1912, to Sava and Zorka Miladinov, in Djala' Banet, Yugoslavia. He was a prisoner of war from 1941-1945 and lived in Germany for four years before arriving in Duluth in 1949. He married his wife Lenka in 1962.
Mr. Miladinov worked at U.S. Steel until his retirement in 1971.
He was a longtime member of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church and was very involved in the church, including being a chanter for 50 years, a member of the St. George Men's Club, and a supporting member of the St. George Choir.
He was also a member of the SNF Lodge #751, the Gary New Duluth Senior Center and the Morgan Park Senior Center. He also gardened for a number of years with Duke Asanovich.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Olga, and a brother Nenad.
Surviving are his wife, Lenka; a sister, Vuka Miladinov, Djala' Banet, Yugoslavia; one nephew, Bato Rostskov; a niece, Zlata Matich; and many friends.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to St. George Serbian Orthodox Church.
Visitation is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, with 7 p.m. Poman service in Foley Chapel, Duluth. The Very Rev. Milan Zbiljic will officiate at the 1 p.m. service Monday in St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, Duluth. Interment
will be in Oneota Cemetery.
Robert Lee "Bob" Williams
Robert Lee "Bob" Williams, 74, a resident of Gordon, died of complications from amyloidosis on Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999 at his home on Little Simms Lake.
He was born Dec. 20, 1924 in Port Wing to Paul and Effie (Wilkinson) Williams. He and his family moved to Gordon in 1930. Following his graduation from Gordon High School he joined the U.S. Army and served in Okinawa from 1943 through 1946.
He married Cora Bowman who owned and operated Bowman's Resort on Simms Lake. They operated the resort, now known as the Halfway House, for several years.
Mr. Williams was appointed Postmaster of Gordon in 1952 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1981.
Following his wife's death, he married Mary Henkel in 1984. They owned and operated Lakehaven Construction for several years. He was also well-known for his work as a real estate broker in Douglas County. He retired in May 1998.
A dedicated public servant throughout his life, Mr. Williams served as the Gordon Town Chairman from 1973 through 1985. During this time he was Chairman of the Douglas County Unit to the Wisconsin Towns Association, as well as Vice Chairman of the Wisconsin Towns Association Board.
He was an active member of the Gordon Presbyterian Church, serving as both an Elder and the Clerk of Session. He was a charter member of the Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post #499 in Gordon, as well as a member of the Keystone Masonic Lodge in Hayward and Zor Temple in Eau Claire.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Gordon; a brother, Everett (Patricia) Williams, Edina, Minn.; two sisters, Anna Mae (Clyde) Evers, Marshalltown, Iowa and Mary Sue (Bob) Aaberg, Craig, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Cora, on April 3, 1983, by his parents, and two brothers, Merritt and William.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Gordon Presbyterian Church at 10:30 a.m. on Monday with Rev. Duane Aslyn officiating.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs, with a Masonic Tribute at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Gordon Memorial Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post #499. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Gordon Presbyterian Church Building Fund, St. Mary's Hospice, Gordon Volunteer Fire Department and the Gordon Ambulance.
Casket bearers will be Bob Thiede, Mert Warner, Ansel Sawyer, Oliver Soltau, Herb Love and Jim Pettit. Honorary bearers will be his many friends.

Leslie A. 'Les' Johnson
Leslie A. 'Les' Johnson, 77, of Superior, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis.
Born March 26, 1922, in Brule to Charlie and Irene (Stewart) Johnson, he was a lifelong area resident.
He graduated from Waino High School in Brule. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge and also in Germany, Belgium, France and Luxembourg. He married the former Lorraine McDonough.
He was employed by A&E Holmes Roofing Co. for 23 years and also worked for Fraser Shipyards.
An avid nature lover, fisherman and hunter, he enjoyed fishing and hunting in the Brule area with his nephew, Billy Culhane.
Surviving are two sons, Jim (Barbara) Johnson, Superior, and Fred (Judy) Piper, Superior; five daughters, Jackie (Rick) Poole, Superior, Barbara Piper, Chicago, Ill., Debbie (Jim) Abbott, Superior, Katherine Carpenter in California and Mary (David) Paulus, Superior; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Melvin (Maryann) Johnson, Superior; five sisters, Evelyn (Bill) Culhane, Brule, Dorothy (Ray) Alholm, Superior, Delores Korhonen, Superior, June (Jack) Johnson, Superior, and Carol (Jim) Archambeau, Hermantown; a cousin, Clancy Johnson; a nephew, Billy Culhane, Brule, and many other nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lorraine; two brothers, Eugene and Howard; and a daughter, Judy McConnell.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Barbara Johnson officiating. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Interment
will be in Everrest Cemetery in Waino, where military honors will be accorded.

Oliver L. Ledin
Oliver L. Ledin, 80, of 5319 Cumming Ave., died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999 in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior.
He was born Feb. 25, 1919 in Minneapolis and resided in Superior for most of his life.
Mr. Ledin was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired principal with the School District of Superior. He received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School there for many years.
A founder and charter member of Cub Scout Pack #224, Mr. Ledin was a member of Itasca-Acacia Masonic Lodge #329, F&AM, the AAD Temple of the Shrine, the Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, Valley of Eau Claire, Scottish Rite Bodies and the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post No. 847.
He was a former member of United Commercial Travelers Council #333 of Superior and was a ham radio operator operating under the call letters of WN9STK.
Mr. Ledin was a life member of Wisconsin PTA, the Persian Gulf Command Veterans Organization, was an avid square dancer and guitarist and enjoyed painting.
Surviving are his wife, Linnea; three sons, Richard (Pam) Ledin, Minneapolis, Tom (Cindy) Ledin, Superior, and David (Marilyn) Ledin of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Karen Rae (husband Dean Hyland) Ledin, also of Phoenix; a brother, Melvin (Pauline) Ledin, Superior; a sister, Florence (Henry) Novacinski, Cloquet; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Coppens, in 1991, his parents, Frank and Alma (Wagner) Ledin, and two brothers, Willetts and Charles.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Bethel Lutheran Church. Pastor Keith Beaver, interim pastor, will officiate, with interment to be in the Nemadji Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post #847.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Downs Funeral Home, with a Masonic service conducted at 7 p.m. by officers and members of Itasca-Acacia Masonic Lodge #329.

Terry Dybvig
Terry Dybvig, 47, Lake Nebagamon, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
Born April 16, 1952, in Minneapolis, he was a longtime Lake Nebagamon/Poplar area resident.
He enjoyed camping, water skiing, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his fiancee, Sherry Kenville, Lake Nebagamon; one son, Erick Dybvig, Superior; two daughters, Melissa and Chantel Dybvig, both of Superior; his mother, Inez Jukulen, Minneapolis; three brothers, Dana, Lino Lakes, Minn., Randy, Oak Grove, Minn., and Andre, Minneapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at noon Wednesday until the 1 p.m. memorial service in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.
Roberta D. 'Ann' Bodell
Roberta D. 'Ann' Bodell, 66, of Hermantown, died on Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
She was born in Superior to Robert and Elizabeth Brannan on July 28, 1933, and had been a lifelong Superior and Hermantown resident.
She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and had attended the former St. Anthony's School. Also she was a member of Proctor Moose Auxiliary. She loved being with her grandchildren, enjoyed playing bingo and cooking for her family.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Bodell, Hermantown; daughter, Nancy Bodell, also of Hermantown; four sons, Mark (Hazel), Saginaw, Minn., Scott, Hermantown, Paul (Mary) and Joe (Denise), both of Duluth; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter; three sisters, Sharon Karlson, Rushford, Minn., Nancy Bergstrom and Peggy Sislo, both of South Range; a brother, Chuck Brannan, Whiting, Ind.
She was preceded in death by a son, James Bodell in 1965, her parents, Robert and Elizabeth Brannan, two sisters, Mary Lou Jamison and Betty Kay Tallberg.

Ralph S. "Red" Gelhaar
Ralph S. "Red" Gelhaar, 86, of the town of Hawthorne, formerly of Barnes, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, in Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Spooner and worked for many years in Chicago as an automobile mechanic, retiring in 1973.
He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW post in Barnes. He was also an avid golfer, fisherman and bird hunter.
Survivors include one stepson, F. Howard Blough of Flowood, Miss.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred on April 21, 1999, and two brothers, John and Don.
No services are planned. Arrangements are by Crawford Funeral Service in Duluth.
Phyllis M. Lamaere
Phyllis M. Lamaere, 65, of Superior, died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospice, Duluth, after a brief battle with ovarian cancer.
She was born in Rice Lake on Jan. 4, 1934, to Ingvald and Esther (Melster) Thompson, and had resided in Superior for most of her life.
She graduated from the former Superior Central High School and married Kenneth John Lamaere at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in 1958. She had worked as a clerk at Dubester Drug from 1968 until 1984, and at South End Drug from 1984 until 1998.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth John, in 1968; her sister Donna Rae, in 1929; her father Ingvald, in 1976; and her mother Esther, in 1992.
She is survived by her daughter, Roberta "Bobbie" Lamaere, of Superior; a son, Jay (Barb) Lamaere, of Blaine, Minn.; two brothers, the Rev. Roderic (Donelda) Thompson of Superior and John Thompson of Canton, Ohio; and two granddaughters, Mallory and Mindy.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home, where the funeral will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Leonard Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Kenneth Hanes
Kenneth Hanes, 88, a resident of Barnes, died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
He was born Oct. 17, 1910, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Anthony and Cora Hanes.
International Harvester, a truck manufacturer, employed him for 32 years until his retirement in 1965. He had been a summer resident of Barnes since 1965 and became a full-time resident in 1968.
He was a member of Maumee Masonic Lodge 725 in Fort Wayne and the Knights of Columbus in Paulding, Ohio.
Survivors include a son, Steven Hanes, Barnes; two daughters, Cora Lou (David) Peters, Fort Wayne, and Ruth Joan (Walter) Kammeyer, Spring Hill, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie, in 1993, a son, Richard Wayne; a brother, Simon; and five sisters, Gladys, Hazel, Hilda, Mildred and Laurie.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs, with a Masonic tribute at 7 p.m. conducted by Keystone Lodge of Hayward. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. David Perkins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Barnes Memorial Cemetery.
Dennis R. Wick
Dennis R. Wick, 55, of 3455 S. County Road E, South Range, died in the hospice unit of St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth, on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999.
He was born Oct. 4, 1943 in Superior and resided in Minneapolis for 28 years before returning to the Superior area in 1996.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had been employed as a mechanic by Northwest Airlines in the Twin Cities for the past 28 years.
He attended Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Superior and was also a member of the American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Kathy; two daughters, Lori Thorpe, Eagan, Minn., and Christie (husband Jon Hanke) Wick, Minneapolis; a stepson, Bill Gordon of Burnsville, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Gordon, also of Burnsville; five grandchildren, Ashley, John, Jessica, Nichole and Kiona; a brother, Oscar (Joy) Wick Jr., Superior; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Florence Wick, brothers, Jack and Ron and a sister, Pat Larson.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with Pastor Robert Stoskopf officiating. Visitation will be Saturday in the church from noon until the time of service.

Robert L. Kelly
Robert L. Kelly, 78, of 804 East 9th St., a lifelong resident of Superior, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior.
He was born in Superior on July 10, 1921, to Michael Nathaniel and Emily (Podvin) Kelly. He attended St. Francis Xavier School and Superior East High School, where he played basketball and football, graduating with the Class of 1939. He then attended Superior State Teachers College and was graduated from Duluth Business University.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force for 3 1/2 years and then began his career in insurance with Paul Holden Insurance and Finance in 1946. He attended insurance schools for several companies the firm serviced, including the Hartford Fire Insurance School, Hartford, Conn.; Continental Agents' School, New York City; Aetna Casualty and Surety; St. Paul Fire and Marine; and many advanced refresher courses for Hartford and St. Paul companies. He purchased the company in 1963 and served as its president until his retirement. The Holden Agency became one of the largest in northern Wisconsin, handling all lines of insurance.
Mr. Kelly and the former Marcella Buytaert were married Sept. 25, 1948, and recently celebrated their golden anniversary.
He served as director of the Superior Association of Commerce, YMCA, Business Educational Advisory Committee of Superior Vocational School, Superior Water, Light and Power, National Bank of Commerce for 27 years, Community Chest, three terms as director of the Superior Memorial Hospital Board, state director of the Wisconsin Agents Association, president of Superior Insurance Agents Association, advisor for St. Paul Fire and Marine, Aetna, Crum and Forester, Hartford companies, and Superior Sheltered Industries.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Rotary Club, Elks Club, was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, a member of the Nemadji Golf Club for 50 years, a charter member of the Hayward Fishing Hall of Fame, and active in golf and bowling leagues, being named Bowler of the Year in 1968. He was also honored by the Superior Jaycees as Boss of the Year. He was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Parish.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Marcie Kelly; his son, Michael (Linda) Kelly; his daughter, Pat Kelly; and two grandsons, Spencer and Austen Kelly, all of Superior; his cousins, Gina Podvin Ball and Jean Podvin Brokke of Superior, Jim Podvin and William La Bounty of Stanley, Wis., and Jimmie Van Gorder of Minnetonka, Minn.; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Jean Buytaert of Spring Lake Park, Minn., Joseph Nicoski of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Bernice and George Mohr of DeBary, Fla., John and Karen Buytaert of Cloquet, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will occur at Downs Funeral Home on Friday from 5-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Fr. James Tobolski and Fr. Edward Meulemans will concelebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with interment at St. Francis Cemetery, Superior.
Bob Ellis, Joel Gates, Kenny Carlson, Bob Fields, Lowell Mattson and Ray Matushak will serve as active pallbearers, with Bill Jordan, Cy Shaeffer, Walter Perreault, Bill Benson, Bill Murphy, Fred Stout, Herman Hammerbeck, Keith Holden, Helge Pukema, Arne Takkunen, Ray Schnell and Bob Grills serving as honorary pallbearers, along with past and present board members of the National Bank of Commerce.

James P. 'Jim' O'Neill
James P. 'Jim' O'Neill, 57, Duluth, formerly a longtime Superior resident, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 24, 1999 in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
He was born May 10, 1942 at Red Lake, Minn., to Alice (Beaulieu) and George A. O'Neill. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had been employed as a manager of the Jones Chemical Plant in Hudson, Wis.
Mr. O'Neill is survived by his former wife, Ardelle O'Neill, Hudson; two sons, Anthony 'Tony' O'Neill, St. Paul, and Travis O'Neill, Cincinnati, Ohio; two daughters, Connie Simonet, Minneapolis, and Karla (Al) Heffron, Hudson; two granddaughters, Megan Heffron and Nicole Jacobson; four brothers, John (Donna Fae) O'Neill, Superior, Thomas (Blanche) O'Neill, Superior, his twin brother, Jerome 'Jerry' O'Neill, Madison, Ind., and Michael (Sara) O'Neill, Superior; three sisters, Kathleen (Kenneth) Ulvila, Superior, Dorothy (Peter) Swenty, Cincinnati, and Patricia (David) Wheeler, Madison, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, George and Ray O'Neill.
Visitation will be Saturday from noon until 1 p.m. funeral in the William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home. Fr. Daniel Dahlberg of Cathedral of Christ the King will officiate.
Myrtle Louise Hawley
Myrtle Louise Hawley, 87, a resident of 1530 Washington Ave., died on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999 in the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Superior.
Mrs. Hawley was born on May 18, 1912 in Superior to Paul and Hazel (Weaver) Cotie. She worked as a nurse's aide at St. Mary's in Superior and Duluth. She retired from Superior Memorial Hospital in 1974.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Donald LaGoe, second husband, Ingwald Olson, and third husband, Frank Hawley.
Survivors include a son, Donald LaGoe of Salem, Oregon; a daughter, Mary Jane Julius of Superior; three brothers, Robert Rose of California, William Rose of Des Moines, Iowa, and Donald "Bud" Rose of Indiana; two sisters, Margaret (Kenneth) Butts of California, and Bonnie Rankin of Superior; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchiIdren.
A memorial service will be held in the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home on Saturday at 11 a.m., with a visitation one hour before. Rev. Ray Anderson will officiate, with inurnment to take place at Greenwood Cemetery.
Andrew A. Smith
Andrew A. Smith, 83, died in The Dalles, Oregon on Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999.
Born Aug. 28, 1915, he was raised in Dairyland, Wis. He had a lifelong battle with osteoporosis, eventually turning to cancer the past few months.
Mr. Smith had enlisted and sailed with the Merchant Marines during World War II and had been an engineer for some 40 years, visiting nearly every foreign port. He retired to live near his brother, Pete, in The Dalles.
He is survived by two sisters, Julia Lind, New Britain, Conn., and Grace Prather, Seattle, Wash.; two brothers, Frank Smith, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Jimmy Smith, Cambridge, Wis.; numerous nieces and nephews, including former Superiorites, Carole (Johnson) Rundell of The Dalles, and Erwin and Dale Johnson, Las Vegas, Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Clark Smith of Dairyland, a sister, Carrie Johnson, in 1978, his brother, Eugene L. 'Pete' Smith, in May of 1999, and two of Pete's children, Maxine, in 1997, and Donald, 1973.
Alder H. Wepfer
Alder H. Wepfer, 83, of Hayward, formerly of Duluth and Superior, died suddenly of cardiac arrest at his home on August 23, 1999. He was born on March 26, 1916 in Park Falls, Wis., the son of Emil and Anna (Holt) Wepfer.
He was a graduate of Park Falls High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Superior State Teachers College, where he lettered in football from 1934 to 1938. He was inducted into the UWS Football Hall of Fame in 1977. He received his Master's Degree in Educational Administration and did graduate work toward his doctorate at Michigan State.
During WWII he was a supervisor at the Hercules Powder Plant in Baraboo.. His 37-year career in education included coaching, teaching, and a high school principalship in the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. He retired from the Duluth Public School System. Until the time of his death, he enjoyed an active lifestyle participating In many outdoor activities, including swimming, fishing, and golf. Aldor is survived by his wife, Marian, and two daughters, Kay and Anita, all of Hayward; his brother, Arthur, of Milwaukee; his sister- in-law, Eunice Doschadis, of Waterloo, Wis.; nieces, nephews, and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew, and in- laws.
In accordance with his wishes, no formal service was held. Paster Paul Yoder of the Hayward United Methodist Church officiated at the private graveside interment at the Wepfer family plot in Park Falls. Cremation and arrangements were handled by the Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home of Hayward.
Ellen C. Amorde
Ellen C. Amorde, 85, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, in Villa- Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Sept. 20, 1913 in Duluth and lived in South Range most of her life. She was employed by the Parkland Health Care and Middle River Health Facility and previously owned and operated the Amorde Dairy Farm.
She is survived by two daughters; Joyce (Richard Helm) Brown, Madison, Alice (Henry) Baski, Denver, Colo.; three sons, Eugene "Gene" (Carol) Amorde, Sunnyside Road, Superior, William "Bill" (Cathy) Amorde, Superior, and Richard "Dick" (Nancy) Amorde, Wentworth; one brother, Harvey (Helen) Johnson, Wentworth; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Amorde, parents, Erick and Bertha Johnson, one infant sister, one son-in-law, Thomas Brown, and one daughter-in-law, Barbara Amorde.
Visitation begins at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and continues until the funeral at noon in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Cort and Keith Baski, Jeff and Robert Brown and Troy, Chad, Robert and Thomas Amorde.
Sylvia F. Asplund
Sylvia F. Asplund, 81, of Washburn, died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999 at Northern Lights Manor Nursing Home in Washburn.
She was born Dec. 6, 1915 in Earl, Wis., the daughter of Frank and Flossie (Daniels) Paske. She married Alfin Asplund on May 6, 1946 in Superior.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed crafts, hunting, fishing, picking berries, and being with her family.
She is survived by three daughters, JoAnn (John) Eklund, Milwaukee, Judy Asplund, Ashland, and Bernice (Jon) Fuhrman, Washburn; five sons, Charles Taylor, Ashland, Jack Taylor, Bullhead City, Ariz., Ted (Margaret) Taylor, Artesia, Calif., Alvin (Audrey) Asplund, Washburn, and Dale (Robin) Asplund, Milwaukee; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mabel Paske, Spooner, Hilma Gregerson, South Range, and Evelyn Eliason, Superior; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfin on Jan. 6, 1973; a daughter, Ellen Weimert; three grandsons, John Bratley, Brian Fuhrman and Patrick Burdick; one granddaughter, Jackie Ann Weimert and two brothers, Lyle and Clarence Paske.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bratley Funeral Home, Washburn, with Rev. Jerry Lamb officiating. Interment
will take place in the Woodland Cemetery, Washburn. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Roger W. Tyson
Roger W. Tyson, 41, of 1213 Tower Ave., died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999 in St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth.
He was born Feb. 4, 1958 in Superior and was a lifelong city resident. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served from July of 1975 to February of 1981.
He was employed as a front end loader-operator by the C. Reiss Coal Company in Duluth.
Surviving are his wife, Grace; his mother, Alberta J. of Kenosha; five brothers, Al, Superior, Ron (Debbie), Sturtevant, Wis., Michael, Superior, Charles, Kenosha, and Jason (Lynn) of Union Grove, Wis.; two sisters, Robin Voight, Toledo, Ohio, and Cindy (Ed) Rosales, Kenosha; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Downs Funeral Home with Fr. Daniel Dahlberg officiating. Interment
will be in Veteran's Memorial Park, Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home and continues Thursday for one hour prior to the service.

Donald Senn
Donald Senn, 74, Superior, died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospice Unit, St. Mary's Hospital of Superior, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Senn was born on June 20, 1925 in Grantsburg, the son of George and Delia (Alstrom) Senn. On Dec. 13, 1943, he was united in marriage to Arlene Bergen in Duluth and they recently celebrated 55 years of marriage.
He worked as a switchman at the Burlington Northern Railroad over 35 years and was also previously employed by the Cargill Grain Elevator Company.
He attended The Salvation Army in Superior. He was also a lifetime member of the United Transportation Union and the Burlington Northern Retirees Association.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene; four sons, Richard "Rick" (Kathryn) Senn, Tim (Nancy) Senn and Terry Senn, all of Superior, and Major Roger (Cecelia) Senn, Indianapolis, Ind.; three daughters, Donna (Thomas) Kilgore, Joan Senn and Cheryl Senn, all of Superior; 10 grandchildren, Joey, Meridith, Donna, Melissa, Rachel, Zachery, Sarah and Caleb Senn, Stacy Seboe and Wesley Kilgore; and one sister, Jeanne (Bill Jr.) Downs, Superior.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Delia Senn, two sons, Donald Senn Jr. and Gary Senn and one infant daughter.
Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Tuesday and will continue until the noon memorial service at the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. His children will be honorary pallbearers.
Ruth Peterson
Ruth Peterson, 88, a resident of 1800 New York Ave., died on Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at St. Francis Home in the Park.
She was born on June 21, 1911, in Gladstone, Mich., to Otto and Amy (Nelson) Peterson and had lived in Superior for most of her lifetime.
She had been employed for many years by the University of Wisconsin-Superior as a secretary and was a member of the Minn-Arrow Chapter of Professional Secretaries International. She was a member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church of Superior.
Surviving are nieces and nephews, including Carol Jean Kalm of Hermantown, Minn.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pilgrim Lutheran Church with the Rev. Waldo Johnson officiating. Private inurnment will take place in the family lot in Graceland Cemetery at a later date.
Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home of Superior.
David Chaffey
David Chaffey, 74, of East 2nd St., Duluth, died on Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 8, 1925, in Chaffey, Wis., and had been an area resident all of his life.
He had been employed by various logging companies.
His survivors include two sisters, Polly Hulter and Dorothy (Sidney) Palm, both of Superior; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a private family service. Arrangements are being handled by William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home.
Janice Charlotte Ann Welshinger
Janice Charlotte Ann Welshinger, 62, of Solon Springs, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, in the Hospice Unit of St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on June 11, 1937, in Superior, to Thure and Anna (Lidell) Johnson. As a small child, she won a "Most Beautiful Baby" contest. She was reared in Superior and graduated from East High School in 1955.
In 1964 she married William Whitsitt and worked in his accounting office for many years. After his death, she married Gene Welshinger on Feb. 25, 1989. They enjoyed many winters in Arizona while enjoying the spring, summer, and fall months in their lake home on Lake St. Croix in Solon Springs.
She was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Solon Springs for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Gene, of Solon Springs; a brother, Wayne (Dolly) Johnson of Duluth; an uncle, Ed (Betty) Lidell of Woodbury, Minn.; an aunt, Helen Arnold of Superior; four step-children, Willa (Jim) Doolittle, of Superior, Dan Welshinger of Lake Nebagamon, Doug (Sandy) Welshinger of McFarland, Wis., and Dena (Tom) Perrault of Superior; seven nephews, Daniel (Evelyn) Newman of Altoona, Wis., James (Terri) Newman of Solon Springs, Dale (Helen) Newman of Reedsburg, Wis., Scott (Mel) Newman of Robbinsdale, Minn., Michael Johnson of Duluth, Tim (Pam) Johnson of Bella Vista, Ark., and Paul Johnson of Eden Prairie, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thure and Anna Johnson; a sister, Dolores Newman; husband William Whitsitt; a nephew, Christopher Newman; and an aunt, Florence Klang.

Lorraine Elaine Greely
Lorraine Elaine Greely, 45, died in a Chesapeake (Va.) health care facility on Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, after a lengthy illness.
She was born on March 11, 1954, in Superior, where she lived most of her life until moving to Chesapeake in 1990.
After graduating from Superior Senior High School in 1972, she became the primary health care provider for her mother, Alvida Greely, until her death in 1991. She also did child care for many years.
She is survived by six sisters, Darlene Stockinger, Stone Lake, Wis., Judith Lovell, Chesapeake, Maxine Greely and Paula Bennett, both of Superior, Margaret Anderson of St. Germain, Wis., and Rebecca Call, St. Mary's, Ga.; five brothers, August Greely, Duluth, James Greely and Lawrence Greely, both of West Palm Beach, Fla., Thomas Greely, Bristol, Conn., and Ronald Greely, Superior; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Alvida and Earl Greely Jr., she was preceded in death by her twin sister, Mary Greely, who died in January of 1999; another sister, Barbara Mishke; and two brothers, Earl George Greely III and Edward William Greely, all of Superior.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Loving Funeral Home in Portsmouth, Va., followed by a burial service. The Rev. Robert E. Hall will officiate.
Violet M. Dunster
Violet M. Dunster, 85, formerly of Hayward and Superior, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at the Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center at South Range.
The former Violet Marie Hayes was born Aug. 4, 1914, in Pine City, Minn., the daughter of George and Frances (Merline) Hayes.
She graduated from high school in South St. Paul and attended one year of college at Winona State Teachers College. She was joined in marriage to Roy Schmidt in 1934 in Sandstone, Minn. They moved to Wisconsin with their family in 1939. Roy died in 1959.
She worked as a secretary at a door core factory in Drummond for several years. She was married to John Hanson in Drummond. They moved to Cable and owned and operated the Tuck Me In Motel in Cable. John died in 1966.
She then moved to Hayward and managed the Lake Hayward Motel for several years. She was joined in marriage to Robert Dunster in 1971. She then pursued her lifelong interest in sewing and crafts, making decorative sweatshirts with her daughter, Phyllis.
She is survived by two daughters, Janet Ries, Fountain, Colo., and Audrey (Howard) Fagan, Superior; one son, Roy (Alice) Schmidt, Phillips; one brother, Tom Steffek, Axtell, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; four brothers; three sisters and one daughter, Phyllis Woodbeck.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at First Congregational Church in Hayward with the Rev. David Benson officiating.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home, Hayward, and from noon-1 p.m. at the church on Friday. Interment

Joan Elizabeth (McCusker) Ramsey
Joan Elizabeth (McCusker) Ramsey, 67, of 4596 E. Tri-Lakes Road (Lake Amnicon), Superior, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, in her residence.
She was born Feb. 29, 1932, in Superior, and had been a lifelong Superior area resident. She was employed by Drs. Weisberg and Heisel, as a secretary for B.D. Ramsey and Son, and also worked at Wold Cleaners, the Douglas County Welfare Department and the Bob Demgen Agency. She was then employed as a teller at M&I First National Bank in its South Superior branch, retiring in 1991 as branch manager.
She was a member of the Tri-Lakes Civic Club, the Amnicon Quilting Club, Pattison Park Tuesday Golf League and the Gladiolus Garden Club. She was an avid artist and craftperson. She and her husband, James Ramsey Sr., were married Feb. 7, 1953.
In addition to her husband, James Sr., she is survived by two sons, James Jr. and Greg (Linda), both of Lake Amnicon; one granddaughter, Gina Nicole Ramsey; two step-grandchildren, Brandi and Jerry Johnson; two step-great-grandchildren, Jordan Marie and Tyler Johnson; three brothers, John T. (Elaine) McCusker, of Gordon, William L. (Phyllis) McCusker, Madison, and James A. (Sharron) McCusker, Superior; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Emma and John T. McCusker; sisters Dorothy Garrity and Marion Cochrane; and a brother, Robert McCusker.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Cathedral of Christ the King. The Rev. Robert Krajewski will be celebrant, with interment to be in Greenwood Cemetery.

George Matthews Jr., 1307 Harvey Drive, Sterling, Ill, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at a Sterling hospital.
A former longtime resident of Herbster, Wis., he was born Aug. 26, 1918, in Herbster, son of George Sr. and Pearl (Springer) Matthews.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; a daughter, Barbara; a son, George; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister Ann (Henry) Puig of Burbank, Ill.; a niece, Betty (Phillips) Peters of Elmhurst, Ill.; and two nephews, Lee and Richard Puig.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Aultrice (Ted) Phillips, and two brothers, Frank and Gordon, all former residents of Herbster.
Edward Markon
Edward Markon, 79, South Range, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, in St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth.
Born Dec. 29, 1919, in Superior, and was a lifelong area resident. He was born and reared in Superior's East End and lived in South Range for the past 51 years.
He served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer during World War II. He married Illie Abrahamson on July 3, 1948, in St. Adalbert's Catholic Church in East End Superior, and they recently celebrated 51 years of marriage.
He was a member of St. William's Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post 847 and a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
He was employed as an engineer for the Soo Line Railroad for 40 years retiring in 1980.
He is survived by his wife, Illie; three sons, Clyde (Shirley) Markon, New Hope, Minn., Carl Markon, Anchorage, Alaska, and Stephen (Julie) Markon, Ramsey, Minn.; four grandchildren, Jessie, Kristian, Aimee and Noah; two brothers, Joe (Louise) Markon, Superior, and Anthony (Ann) Markon, Green Bay; three sisters, Veronica (Fred) Wuethrich, in Illinois, Mary Johnson, Wentworth, and Helen (Ed) St. Onge, Superior; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Justin and Marcella Markon; three brothers, Eustace, Stanley and Walter Markon; and a daughter-in-law, Sandy Markon.

Martin 'Mick' M. Mortenson
Martin 'Mick' M. Mortenson, 50, of 709 Franklin St., Iron River, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, as the result of an automobile accident in Dodge County, Wis.
He was born July 4, 1949, in Ashland, the son of Rudolph E. and Elizabeth M. (Stephans) Mortenson.
He taught at Dodgeland Middle School in Reeseville, Wis., for over 28 years. He owned and operated Guide Master guiding service in Iron River for over 10 years. He was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. He and the former Andrea K. 'Andy' Wiberg were married on June 28, 1969, in Iron River.
In addition to his wife, Andy, of Iron River, he is survived by his mother, Mae Mortenson, Iron River; one son, Curt (Stefanie) Mortenson, Iron River; one daughter, Christy (Brad) Mosher, Deerfield, Wis.; one granddaughter, Madeline; two sisters, Marge Irons of Iron River and Carol (Skip) Ryan of Grand Rapids, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Rudolph; one brother, Randy; a sister, Becky; one son, Evan; and a grandson, Hunter.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Calvary Presbyterian Church, Iron River, with the Rev. H. Duane Aslyn officiating. Interment

Evelyn H. 'Sis' Anderson
Evelyn H. 'Sis' Anderson, 78, a resident of Gaston, Ore., and formerly of Superior, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, in the Hillsboro, Ore., hospital.
She was born here on May 24, 1921, the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Anna Goligoski. Following graduation from Superior Cathedral High School, she attended Superior Beauty School and later became a resident of Oregon, where she was employed as a beautician for many years.
Her husband Robert preceded her in death in 1973 after 25 years of marriage.
Survivors include four sons, Thomas (Shelly) Anderson, Newberg, Ore., Michael (Beverly) Anderson, Sherwood, Ore., William (Pam) Anderson, Gaston, and James Anderson, Gaston; one daughter, Susan (Robert) Sturdivant, Cornelius, Ore.; one sister, Rose Williams, McMinnville, Ore.; two brothers, Robert (Lorraine) Goligoski and William (Shirley) Goligoski, Superior; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A family graveside service is scheduled for Friday at Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove, Ore., with the Rev. Elwin C. Schwab of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Forest Grove, officiating. A memorial gathering for family and friends will take place Saturday at Anderson home in Gaston.

Jean M. Nystrom, 65, Superior, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999 in Superior.
She was born in Ashland and was a longtime Superior resident. She was married to John Nystrom of Superior.
She is survived by three sons, Jon (Deborah) Nystrom, Minneapolis, Jeff Nystrom, San Diego, Calif., and Jim (Kelly) Nystrom, Superior; three daughters, Janet (Paul) Ryan, Rushford, Minn., Jodi (Dan) Peters, Wyoming, Minn., and Julie (Bob) Archambault, Superior; three brothers, Paul (Carol) Haskins, Hoyt Lakes, Minn., Gerald (Lynn) Gordon, Ashland, and Gayle Gordon, Ashland; one sister, Bev (Bill) Schutte, Ashland; and 12 grandchiidren.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday until the 11 a.m. funeral in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Fr. James Tobolski, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church will officiate.
