Patrick S. Gaynor
Patrick S. Gaynor, 38, died Sept. 2, 1999, as the result of a automobile accident in Chicago, Minn.
He is survived by his wife, Leya; children, Jonathan, Emily, Rachel, and Anna; his parents Dennis and Sara Lynn Gaynor of Superior; grandmother, Erma Gaynor of Superior; brothers Timothy (Debbie) Gaynor of Solon Springs, Byron Gaynor of Superior; and a sister, Kelly (Kent) Bergum of South Range. The funeral Services will be held Monday, Sept. 6, at the United Methodist Church in River Fall. Cashman Mortuary, River Falls, is in charge of Arrangements.
Richard E. Felien
Richard E. Felien, 58, Superior, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, in the St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice Unit, Duluth.
Richard was born Nov. 2, 1940, in Superior to Elmer and Ethel (Wester) Felien. He was a lifelong resident of Superior, graduating from Central High School in 1959 and attending Wisconsin State University. He graduated from the First Class Marine Engineers School in Duluth in 1965. He received the Vietnam Ribbon, serving on three tours with the Merchant Marines. He had worked for Fraser Shipyards as a boilermaker and for Oglebay Norton as a third engineer. He was a member of The World Wide Church of God, Duluth.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Gayle Jean, in 1965.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; a son, James R. (Missy) of Duluth; a daughter, Dawn Engelbrectson of Forest Lake, Minn.; three stepdaughters, Pauline (Craig) VanBuskirk, of South Range; Geri (Tony) Bennett of Superior and Christine Geboe of Duluth; a brother, Rodney (Judy) of Superior; three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held. Interment
will be in Graceland Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.
Helen Marie DeZarn
Helen Marie DeZarn, 75, Yakima, Wash., formerly of Superior, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, at The Rockenfield Adult Family Home in Yakima.
She was born on May 18, 1924, in Douglas County, Wis., to William and Lena Davidson. She graduated from Superior Central High School and later attended the University of Wisconsin. Helen served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in New York City.
In 1958 Helen and her husband, Gerald, moved to Yakima where they raised their four children. In 1990 she retired from her job in the Yakima County District Court. She enjoyed traveling, dining out, reading and spending quiet evenings playing scrabble.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; her parents, two sisters and one brother.
She is survived by her brother, Eugene (Agnes) Davidson, South Range; two daughters, Eileen Davidson of Union Gap, Wash., and Jeradell (Raymond) DeZarn-Young of Fairbanks, Alaska.; two sons, James (Linda) of Dixon, Calif., and Jeffery of Woodland, Calif.; six grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Clifford Johnson
Clifford Johnson, 95, Superior, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, in his residence at the St. Francis Home in the Park.
He was born July 17, 1904, in Dassel Minn. He had resided in Superior for most of his life. He had worked for the Great Northern Railroad and had retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad as a district supervisor after 42 years. He was a member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church and the Acacia-Itasca Masonic Lodge No. 329, F&AM.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Helen.
He is survived by his nieces, Joan Abrahamzon and Lois Strauman, both of Superior; and his grandchildren, Ryan Johnson of Avon, Conn., Randy Johnson of San Diego, Calif., and Denise Currier of Lynnwood, Wash.
The funeral service will be on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Pilgrim Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Eckman officiating. Interment
will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.
Viena Allora Koski
Viena Allora Koski, 91, Hibbing, Minn., formerly of Superior, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at Golden Crest Nursing Home in Hibbing.
Viena was born Aug. 15, 1908, in Rautari, Finland, to John and Aliina Hirvela. She came to the United States as a young girl and settled in Toivola, Minn. She attended school there. She was united in marriage to Henry Koski.
She moved to Superior and was employed by a dry cleaner. She moved to Hibbing in the late 1960s and returned to Toivola in the late 1970s. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Club No. 80 in Superior.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; a sister, Tyne, and by a brother, William.
She is survived by a daughter, Dolores (Earl) Rootes, Red Wing, Minn.; four grandchildren, David Rootes, Manchester, Conn., Jeffrey (Deborah) Rootes, Circle Pines, Minn., Bradley Rootes, London, England, and Brenda (Brad) King, Zumbrota, Minn.; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Range Funeral Home in Hibbing, the Rev. Kristi Weber officiating, with interment in the Toivola Cemetery. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Walter M. "Wally" Brand
Walter M. "Wally" Brand, 30, Superior, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, as the result of a traffic accident in Holyoke, Minn.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and baseball fan.
He is survived by a daughter, Codie Leigh Brand-Tessier, at home; his parents, Robert and Mary Brand, Wascott; a sister, Michele "Shelly" (Brian) Wick, Superior; a nephew, Eric Wick, Superior; his paternal grandmother, Mary Brand, Duluth; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. William's Catholic Church in Pattison Park with the Rev. Ronald 0lson the celebrant. Interment
will be in the Summit Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Wednesday at Downs Funeral Home where a Bible vigil will occur at 7 p.m. with the Rev. James Powers officiating.
Ellen May St. Marie
Ellen May St. Marie, 78, of Baxter Avenue, Superior, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth.
She was born May 7, 1921, in Superior, the daughter of Harry and Edith Ring and was a lifelong resident.
She was graduated from the former Central High School in 1939 and from Duluth Business University in 1940. On Oct. 11, 1947, she was married to Al St. Marie at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior. She was previously employed by the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., during World War II. More recently she was employed as an account clerk by the Sears-Roebuck Co. until her retirement in 1951. She also sold products for Avon for 39 years. Ellen was a lifelong member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, the Eagles Aerie No. 80 of Superior, the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post No. 847 Auxiliary and the Superior Parent-Teachers Association.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Al; a son, James (Deborah) St. Marie, Poplar; a daughter, Bonnie (Gary) Pauna, Superior; four grandchildren, Christina St. Marie, Mark Pauna and Robert Pauna, all of Superior, and Christopher St. Marie, Poplar.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, the Rev. David Eckman officiating, with interment in Graceland Cemetery, Superior. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Thursday at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home and also 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.

Duane 'Mac' McElmurry
Duane 'Mac' McElmurry, 72, Haines City, Fla., formerly of Wascott, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, while staying with his daughter, Nancy McKinley, and her family in Eagan, Minn.
He is also survived by his wife, Margaret McElmurry; three sons, Joseph, Richard and Roy Thomas; and eight grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Church St. John Neumann, 4030 Pilot Knob Rd., Eagan. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m.

Jeffrey A. Alberio
Jeffrey A. Alberio, 38, of Bury St. Edmunds, England, formerly of Bloomington, Minn., died of cancer on Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999.
Jeff served for 17 years in the U.S. Air Force before receiving a medical discharge in 1996.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; two daughters, Amie and Micheala; his parents, Jose (Angela) Alberio and Joy (Bill) Smith of Bloomington; his grandmother, Georgia Nord, Superior; two brothers, Joseph (Kathy) of Saginaw, Minn., and Jay (Judy) of Woodbury, Minn.; two sisters, Julie (Scott) Springer and Juanita Botten of Superior; in-laws in England; and many nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Nativity Church in Bloomington.
Jesse M. Brown Jr.
Jesse M. Brown Jr., 84, of Gering, Neb., formerly of Superior, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at the Regional West Medical facility at Scottsbluff, Neb.
He was born Nov. 23, 1914, at Anniston, Ala., the son of Jesse M. and Virginia (Trester) Brown. He was raised and educated in Superior where he resided from 1915 to 1942. He was united in marriage to Irene Williams on Nov. 1, 1934, in Foxboro. They moved to Denver in 1942 where they resided for eight years. In 1950 they moved to Scottsbluff. He retired in 1978 after 36 years as route supervisor for Rainbow Bread.
He was a member of the Robert W. Furnas Lodge No. 265 AF&AM, Panhandle Shrine Club and was a past president, York Rite and was a past secretary of the Elks Lodge. He attended the Central Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Irene, of Gering; one son, Charles (Janice) Brown, Prescott, Ariz.; one daughter, Janet (Raymond) Heitz, Longview, Wash.; two granddaughters, Shannon Brown, Gering, and Kim Van Cura, Scottsdale, Ariz.; two grandsons, Rick and Randy Heitz of Longview, Wash.; nine great grandchildren, three sisters, Avis Runde, Pearblossom, Calif.; Lenore Higgins, Seattle, Wash., and Eleanor Higgins, Ft. Atkinson, Wis.; a brother, Leland, the Philippines; a niece, Suzanne Rooney, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a nephew, Alan Horvath, Superior, many other nieces and nephews and a dear friend, Peggy Bachand, Superior.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Robbie Brown; three brothers, Lyland, Ellis and Eugene, and two sisters, Frances Brown and Doris Jenkins.
The funeral was held Aug. 27 at the Central Church of Christ in Gering with Pastor Victor McPeak officiating. Interment

Clifford McKee
Clifford McKee, 76, formerly of 1900 New York Ave., Superior, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the St. Francis Home in the Park.
He was born Feb. 6, 1923, in Superior and was a lifelong resident. He was employed by the Great Northern Railroad as a hostler's helper. He began his employment in 1942 and was with the railroad for over 40 years. During that time he also worked for the former McKee & Son Florist.
He was a member of the Bayside Baptist Church. He was known at the former Ogden Avenue Baptist Church and later at Bayside as the candy man, distributing candy to children. He was also a former rail union member.
He is survived by three sisters, Martha (Al) Kirkpatrick, Libby, Mont.; Bertha Witt, Superior, and Rhoda (Douglas) Anderson, Bonita Springs, Fla., and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Mary McKee and two brothers, Manfred 'Mac' and Vernon.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, at the Bayside Baptist Church with Rev. Leonard Carlson officiating. Interment
will be in the Earl Cemetery in Earl, Wis. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, at the church.

Ruthanne Waletzko
Ruthanne Waletzko, 82, Upland, Calif., formerly of Superior, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, after suffering a stroke.
She was born in Superior and resided here for 76 years. She attended the former Superior East High School and State Teachers College. She was a member of the Itasca Presbyterian Church, the Lambda Sigma Lambda Sorority, Ruth Howenstine Guild, the Garden Club and the Fairlawn Museum Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence "Butch" Waletzko, in 1983.
She is survived by a daughter, Clarice Rae Olive, Upland; a son, Jerry, Garden Grove, Calif., and by a sister-in-law, Josephine Bell, Superior.

Genevieve K. Bates
Genevieve K. Bates, 79, 1307 N. 17th St., Superior, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior.
She was born Oct. 21, 1919, in Morton Grove, Ill. She had resided in Superior for several years. While in Illinois she was employed as a lab technician for Baxter Laboratories. While in Superior she was employed at Jeno's.
She is survived by a son, Jack (Carolyn) Bates, Eau Claire, and two grandchildren.

Beverly Jean 'Bev' Forslund
Beverly Jean 'Bev' Forslund, 73, Iron River, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born March 21, 1926, and was raised and attended school in Iron River. She moved with her husband and family to Dubuque, Iowa, in the early 1950's. They resided there for almost 40 years, retiring back in the Iron River area in 1991.
She was a member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary in Iron River. She enjoyed going to casinos and was an avid bingo player.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mabel; three sisters, Myrtice, Margaret and Dorothy, and by a brother William 'Bud.'
She is survived by her husband, Earl; a sister, Patricia; a daughter, Bonnie (Brian) McAreavy; two sons, Dennis and William, and by two grandchildren, Jennifer and Jacob.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Iron River, Rev. H. Duane Aslyn officiating, with interment in the Iron River City Cemetery. Virginia M. Doucette, 89, 1900 1/2 N. 13th St., Superior, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the St. Francis Home in the Park.
She was born Jan. 18, 1910, in Superior and was a lifelong resident.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond; two sons, Donald (Claudia) Aaker, Mankato, Minn., and Jim Doucette, San Mateo, Calif.; a daughter, Dorothy Berger, Milan, Ga.; nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Betty 'Tina' (Steve) Gondik, Superior.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Emily (nee Hamilton) Card; two brothers, Bill Card and Bud Card, and by a sister, Ethel Cadotte.

Verna E. Haspeslagh
Verna E. Haspeslagh, 74, Burien, Wash., died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, in Washington.
She was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Superior. She was a member of the St. Bernadette Catholic Church and she retired from US West Communications after 40 years of service. She was also a pioneer life member and past president of the Puget Sound Telephone Co.
She is survived by a niece, Marian Maki; a nephew, Dick Siekkinen, and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marce; her parents, two brothers and a sister.
A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, at the Calvary Cemetery with Fr. Raymond Schoone officiating.

August Ahola
August Ahola, 93, a longtime Lakeside area resident, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999 at the Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born May 29, 1906, in Finland and immigrated to the Cloverland area in 1914 where he resided until he married Mamie Allen on April 3, 1934, in Duluth. They recently celebrated 65 years of marriage. He owned and operated a farm for many years along with his wife, Mamie, before their retirement in 1972. He was a former chairman and town assessor for the Town of Lakeside. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 80.
He is survived by his wife, Mamie, Hawthorne; five daughters, Mildred Matheson, Black Duck Falls, Minn.; Janice Allen, Phoenix, Ariz.; Lila (Richard) Ronn, Eagan, Minn.; Janie Ahola, St. Paul, Minn., and Marcia (John) Chess, Cottage Grove, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, a sister, Anna Norman, Pacifica, Calif., and several nieces, nephews and cousins in Finland.
The funeral service will be at noon on Wednesday at the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Gullicksrud, pastor of Peace Lutheran Church, Poplar, officiating. Interment

Alford Johnson
Alford Johnson, 66, Superior, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in Duluth following a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was born Sept. 17, 1932, in Superior and was a lifelong Superior resident. He was employed at the King Midas Flour Mill for 42 years before his retirement on July 1, 1992. He was an avid fisherman and he enjoyed working with wood. He was married to Mavis Beckman on May 7, 1982, and they recently celebrated 17 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, Mavis, he is survived by two sons, Kenneth (Nelda) Johnson, Terre Haute, Ind., and Patrick (Karen) Johnson, Superior; two daughters, Margaret (Mike) Rydberg, Superior, and Leeann (Perry) Sorenson, Ada, Minn.; eight grandchildren, one stepson, Jeffrey L. (Connie) Johnson, Superior; one stepdaughter, Kathy (Gary) Jacobson, Minong; three step-grandchildren, two sisters, Lorraine (Floyd) Johnson, Sturgeon Lake, Minn., and Jane Johnson, Sturgeon Lake, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Albertina; his second wife, Patricia; a brother, Richard; a stepson, Dennis Johnson, and by his parents, Clifford and Clara Johnson.
A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m., Thursday, at the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. William Knaack officiating. Inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Eugene Louis 'Gene' Fahrner
Eugene Louis 'Gene' Fahrner, 77, a resident of Barnes, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
He was born Jan. 24, 1922, in Joliet, Ill., to Dr. Walter and Grace (Huntington) Fahrner. On May 15, 1944, he was married to Mulcana "Mike" Fulton in Banana River, Fla. Gene was a first lieutenant in the Navy Air Corps and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign, Campaign and Service Victory World War II and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
Gene and Mulcana have owned Fahrner's Resort in Barnes since 1947. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and raising Golden Retrievers. While he lived in Joliet he operated a construction company.
He was a charter member of the Barnes Lions Club and the American Association of Retired Persons Chapter No. 3467. He was also a member of the Barnes VFW Post 8329, the Eau Claire Lakes Conservation Club and St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gordon.
Survivors include his wife, Mike, Barnes; a son, Fulton (Monica) Fahrner, Melrose, Minn.; two daughters, Tama (Tom) Larson, Barnes, and Samara (Mike) Frelichowski, Gordon; nine grandchildren, Kate Westermeyer, Minneapolis, Minn.; Matt Fahrner, Clearwater, Minn.; Anne Fahrner, Minneapolis; Chris Wlaz, Tucson, Ariz.; Stacey Rasmussen, Spokane, Wash.; Tere Frelichowski, Milwaukee; Chris Larson, Barnes; Cassie Larson, Eau Claire, and Carlye Larson, Barnes, and two great grandchildren, Shelbey and Haley Rasmussen, Spokane.
He was preceded in death by two children, Michelle and Eugene, two sisters and five brothers.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gordon with Fr. Jim Powers officiating. Interment
will be in the Barnes Memorial Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Barnes VFW. Arrangements are by the Brown Funeral Home, Solon Springs.
Michael T. Karaba
Michael T. Karaba, 85, 68790 Karaba Rd., Ashland, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at the Court Manor Health and Rehabilitation Services, Ashland.
He was born Sept. 14, 1913, in Moquah, the son of Joseph and Julia (Mikelo) Karaba.
Mr. Karaba was a dairy farmer near Moquah and was employed at Midland Services in Ashland as a serviceman for the LP gas division. He retired in 1969. He was married to Ruth E. Collins on June 5, 1943, in Ashland.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, Ashland; two sons, David (Barbara), Superior, and Kenneth (Christine Kollen), Tucson, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Cindy Karaba; two grandsons, Jerod and Todd; several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Anne Budiash, Martinez, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Val; a sister, Sarah Hudacek, and by a nephew, Tom Hudacek.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Moquah, Fr. Gabriel Zepczyk officiating, with interment in the Old Moquah Cemetery, Moquah. Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at the church.

Cheryl Ronding
Cheryl Ronding, 42, 1201 N. 18th St., Superior, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at her home.
She was born Jan. 29, 1957, in Superior and was a lifelong resident. She was a bartender for R-Place. She was an avid bowler and pool shooter. She was also a bowling instructor, an avid fisherman, a loving mother and an animal lover.
She is survived by a son, Greg Andrew Ronding, Superior; a sister, Cynthia Soderlund, Superior; a special friend, Greg Nollet, Superior; several nieces and nephews, a brother-in-law, James (Debra) Ronding, Superior, and two sisters-in-law, Liz (Larry) Raivala and Kathy (Jeff) Willie, Superior.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick, in 1991, and by her parents, George and Genevieve Glonek.

Frances L. (nee Slovick) Schmisek, 87, Grand Forks, N.D., died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at the Valley Memorial Home Eldercare.
The former Frances L. Slovick was born June 21, 1912, in Superior, the daughter of Stanley and Frances Slovick, and was raised in the Dedham area. She attended school in Superior. She was married to Edwin Johnson in 1933 in Superior and he died in 1947. She was then married to Frank Cheselski in 1949 in Superior and he died in 1960. She was later married to Frederick Schmisek on Nov. 30, 1974, in Grand Forks. He died on Feb. 28, 1996.
She is survived by two sons, Edwin Johnson, Leader, Texas, and Dennis (Alleen) Johnson, Irvine, Calif.; four daughters, Delores (Richard) Paschke, Grand Forks; Beverly Johnson, Denver, Colo.; Katherine (Eric) Holck, Seattle, Wash., and Barbara Holten, Roseau, Minn.; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two brothers, George (Matilda) Slovick, Bennett, and Alex Slovick, Superior.
She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Stanley, Charles, John and Joseph.
The funeral service was held on Aug. 10 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Forks, with interment in the Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks. The Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, was in charge of arrangements.

Luke Edward Love
Luke Edward Love, 34, Bennett, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in Bennett.
He was born Feb. 10, 1965, in Superior, the son of Harold Lloyd and Frances Amelia Love. He resided in Superior most of his life until he moved to Bennett in 1989.
On April 25, 1986, he was married his wife, Tia Maria. Mr. Love was previously employed as a welder for the Northland Welding & and Manufacturing Co. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, the Marine Corps and the Army Reserve.
Luke was a member of the Gordon Fire Department and the Gut Shooters Lodge. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children and was known as a very generous person, especially for those in need.
He is survived by his wife, Tia Maria, Superior, four daughters, Alisha Marie, Brittany Ann, Christine Amelia and Dahlilah Mae, all at home; his mother, Frances Brice, Reddick, Fla.; three brothers, Jeffrey (Debbie) Love and Harold (Stephanie) Love, Superior, and Gregory (Nancy) Love, Rosemont, Minn.; two sisters, Elizabeth (Henry) Podgorak, Superior, and Rhonda (Cory) Dunaiski, Hinckley, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold; his maternal grandparents, Frank and Ethel Holsclaw, and by his paternal grandparents, George and Norma Love.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Friday, at the William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, Pastor Jerome Elness officiating, with interment in the Bennett Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home and will also occur from 10-11 a.m., Friday.
Pallbearers will be James Love, Jack Swonger, Bob Beck, Bob Robinson, Rick Swonger and Mike Swonger.

Carl A. Hagman
Carl A. Hagman, 89, 1800 New York Ave., Superior, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Superior.
He was born Aug. 7, 1910, in Superior and was a lifelong resident. He was employed as a fireman by the Superior Fire Dept., retiring in 1971 with over 30 years of service. Mr. Hagman was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church and the Retired Firemen's Organization. He was active for many years in the Superior Curling Club and was one of the first members of the Pattison Park Golf Course.
He is survived by his wife, Inga L., Superior; two sons, Lester C. (JoAnne) Hagman, Marlinton, W. Va., and Dennis R. (Marge) Hagman, Oconto; a daughter, Carol L. Gustafson, Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and by a sister, Jennie Peterson, Superior.
He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Anna Hagman; a sister, Elsie Axdahl, and by two brothers, Swante and Arthur.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the Bethel Lutheran Church, the Rev. Keith Beaver officiating, with interment in the Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m., Friday, at the Downs Funeral Home.

Kenneth A. Ronning
Kenneth A. Ronning, 78, of 2001 N. 64th St., Superior, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in the St. Luke's Hospice Unit in Duluth.
Kenneth was born on June 3, 1921, to Martin and Olive (Somes) Ronning in Holyoke, Minn. He spent 30 years on the road as a truck driver and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 12 years. Kenneth was a World War II Army veteran and served in Normandy, Northern France, Southern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Purple Heart. Kenneth was a member of the Teamsters, the Henry S. Blomberg Post No. 847 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Letter Carriers Union No. 337.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Oliver and Keith.
He is survived by a sister, Luetta Schelinder, Monticello, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Dolores Ronning, Superior; nieces and nephews Marvin and Carol Ronning, Roger and Gloria Ronning and Russell and Sharon Ronning, all of Superior, and additional nieces and nephews out of town.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, at the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. Interment
will be in Greenwood Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the members of the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post No. 847.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
Charles B. 'Chuck' Culver
Charles B. 'Chuck' Culver, 56, 31 50th Ave. E., Superior, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at his home.
He was born Jan. 14, 1943, in Superior and was a lifelong resident. He had been employed as a press operator for Georgia Pacific since 1961. He served with Army National Guard. He was the grand sheik of the Laurel and Hardy Busybody Tent. He had been affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America and was active in youth sports. He was a member of the Lambeau North Green Bay Packer Club and was an avid music lover. He was a member of the United Paperworkers International Union Local No. 776.
He is survived by three sons, Greg (Sarah) Culver, Duluth, and Mike (Beverly) Culver and Steven Culver, Superior, and by three grandchildren, Nicholas, Angelina and Annika. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Elma Culver.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, at the Downs Funeral Home, Rev. Jerry Thoreson officiating, with interment in the Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Henry Olson, Dennis Gunderson, John Smedberg, Loren Byberg, Roger Krob and William Sims Jr.
Oscar G. Olsen
Oscar G. Olsen, 85, 1612 N. 37th St., died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born April 25, 1914, in Superior, and was a lifelong city resident.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and for a time while stationed in Australia he was General Douglas McArthur's chauffeur.
He was a retired transport driver for Texaco in Duluth and a member of Bethel Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alphild, in 1995.
Surviving are a sister, Gudrun Rostad, Superior; a brother, Harold (Jane) Olsen, Foxboro; a stepdaughter, Janet Gagnon, Hendersonville, N.C.; three granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home, where visitation begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Keith Beaver will officiate, with interment to be in the Summit Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Douglas, Donald and Duane Christiansen, Wayne Boustead, John Heifner and Tim Olsen.
Gerald 'Jerry' R. Jones
Gerald 'Jerry' R. Jones, 59, a longtime Billings Park resident currently residing on Elmira Avenue, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Superior on Oct. 26, 1939, and graduated from Superior Central High School.
He served with the U.S. Marines from 1958-61 and was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. He was an avid Packers fan.
He was employed by A.D.M. Grain Elevators in Superior. His parents, Margaret (Johnson) and Leonard Jones, preceded him in death.
Surviving are three brothers, James L. Jones, Palm Coast, Fla., Franklin 'Frank' D. (Phylis) Jones, Superior, and John L. (Pat) Jones, Superior; two sisters, Jeanne M. Jones, St. Louis Park, Minn., and Delores 'Suzie' (Paul) Slee, Superior; two aunts; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in Downs Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at Christian and Missionary Alliance Church at 9 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Roger Barden officiating. Interment
will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Arthur C. Haugen Sr.
Arthur C. Haugen Sr., 93, of Billings Drive, a pharmacist for 73 years, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
He was born March 30, 1906, in Superior. He was the fourth son of Norwegian immigrants. He graduated from Superior Central High School in 1924 and from the Upsher School of Pharmacy in Minneapolis in 1926.
He began work as a drug store delivery boy and soda fountain attendant in 1917. During the Great Flu Epidemic of 1918, he and his family moved to Amnicon temporarily to avoid the deadly Spanish Influenza. He became a Registered Pharmacist in 1926, and worked in that capacity until March 1999, a total of 73 years. During the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the Depression that followed, his East End Drug Store was able to continue in business. In 1934 he became owner of the Northern Land Improvement Company. In 1938 he and his partner, the late John Grimsrud were owners of the East End, Allouez and the Peoples Drug Stores. In 1998 he was able to observe the East End Drug Store celebrate its 100th year in business.
He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church since 1922. He was a member of AAD Temple Shrine, a 50-year member of the Masons, Elks Lodge, a 60-year member of the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin, and one of the founding members of the Superior Pharmacists Association, and a sponsor of Superior Memorial Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Virginia J. Haugen in 1997, and by his parents, Martha (Boe) and Hans Haugen and six brothers Harold, George, Theodore, John, Fred and Olaf.
Surviving are two sons, Arthur Haugen Jr., Superior, and Walter "Pudge' (Sara) Haugen; and grandson, Owen of Foxboro.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Downs Funeral, Home with the Rev. Paul Lutz officiating. Visitation in the funeral home will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment
will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Bernard Eugene Benson
Bernard Eugene Benson, 80, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, in his residence at 3214 N. 20th St., Superior.
He was born on May 26, 1919, in Superior, to Oscar and Blanche (King) Benson.
In 1937 he graduated from Superior Central High School and attended college for three years before he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he was major in World War II and flew the B-20 Navigator.
In 1946, he and his wife started Benson Photography and later opened Benson's Bridal Shop before retiring in 1981.
He and a partner opened an airplane charter service in the 1960s where they built a hanger and small restaurant, which developed to a bar and restaurant.
He served on the City Council for 5 1/2 years and was council president for three years. In 1995-1996 he contributed his wartime memories and experiences in a book "Stalking The U-Boat."
He was a member of the Optimist Club, the VFW in Barnes, the Barnes Community Church, which he helped construct, and the Professional Photography Association. He served on the Airport Committee for many years and worked diligently on the airport improvements. In June of 1999, Mayor Ciccone proclaimed him "Citizen of the Month."
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Blanche, and a step-father Steiner Fjoseide.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; daughters, Barbara (Richard) Nelson of Superior and Pat (John) Thompson of Duluth; a brother, Robert Charles Benson, and a sister Marjorie Mae Gaertner, both of Maple; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday in Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home, where an 11 a.m. funeral will be held on Wednesday. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. The Rev. Gerald Presuhn will officiate. Military honors will be accorded by the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post #847.
Laura Grice
Laura Grice, 86, of 1800 New York Ave., formerly a resident of Superior's East End area, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at St. Francis Home in the Park.
Born June 5, 1913, in Montigo, Wis., she was a longtime resident of Superior. She had been employed in the clerical department of Montgomery Ward in Chicago.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Superior and had been a volunteer at the former Parkland Health Facility.
Surviving are two sons, Bruce (Cindy) Grice, of Troy, Ohio, and Dennis Grice, Superior; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orie Grice, in 1992.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with visitation that day from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. Interment
will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Helmi "Mary" Niemi
Helmi "Mary" Niemi, 99, died on Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999 at the Franciscan Health Center in Duluth. She had been until recently a resident at the Villa-Marina Health & Rehabilitation Center in Superior.
She was born May 23, 1900 in Montreal, Wis., to Daniel and Sofia Wilkins. After her father died, her mother was married to Matt Maki and the family moved to Oulu. In 1927 she was married to Walter Niemi. She had been a waitress, but was mostly a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She enjoyed reading and continuing to learn from her study of the Bible and for more then 45 years she delighted in sharing the Bible with others as one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Mrs. Niemi was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in 1963; a daughter, Mariann; five brothers John, William and Isaac Wilkins and Emil and Uno Maki; a sister, Allina Kortesma, and by a niece, Lillian Rolling.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol (Calvin) Hoadley, Superior; her grandsons, Joseph (JoAnn) Hoadley, Poplar, and Jon (Lisa) Hoadley, Isanti, Minn.; six great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 603 Faxon St., Superior. Randy Oakley, a congregation elder, will officiate. Arrangements are by the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.
John Robert Rogers
John Robert Rogers, 58, of West Duluth, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at Lake Haven Manor in Duluth after a short battle with lung cancer.
A lifelong Duluth resident, he had worked as a laborer. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Emitt and Joan Thompson Rogers.
Survivors include his son, Kenneth, Alexandria, Minn.; a daughter, Karla Rogers, Onalaska, Wis.; six brothers, George, Dan, Bill, Gary, all of Duluth, Paul, Amarillo, Texas, and Karl, South Range; four sisters, Joan Baeselager, Superior, Peggy Jakubek, Sheila Rogers and Myrtle Watczak, all of Duluth; a grandson, Jacob Lackner; nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Edward Albert Boughton
Edward Albert Boughton, 81, a resident of the town of Chicog, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Spooner Health System.
He was born July 15, 1918, in Chicago, to Stephen and Loretta (Snyder) Boughton. During World War II he served with the Army Air Corps. On Nov. 25, 1953, he married Betty Jo May in Naperville, Ill.
He was employed by Hughes Aircraft building airplanes in Fullerton, Calif., for 26 years. He became a full-time resident of the town of Chicog in 1987. He was very active in the Washburn County Neighborhood Watch Program.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Boughton, Chicog; daughters Dianne (Ellis) Johnson of Anderson, S.C., and La Nita Boughton, Westminster, Calif.; four grandchildren, Neil and Nigel Shepherd and Perry and Rebecca Boughton; and one great-grandson, Andrew Boughton. His parents, one sister and one brother preceded him in death.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home in Minong, with the Rev. Stephen Floyd, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday. Interment
will be in the Chicog Cemetery.
Marjorie Anne Lyons
Marjorie Anne Lyons, 84, of St. Louis Ave., Duluth, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born in Ishpeming, Mich., and had been a Duluth resident since 1954.
She was a homemaker and had been a former school teacher in Superior and Spooner. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Duluth.
She is survived by sons John (Alice) Lyons, Maple Grove, Minn., Paul, Duluth, Joseph, El Campo, Texas, and William, St. Peter, Minn.; a daughter, Mary (Douglas) Johnson, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; a son-in-law, Dave Carter, Duluth; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, in 1984; a daughter, Peggy Carter; daughter-in-law Gloria Lyons; grandson Michael Lyons; three sisters and two brothers.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m., with wake prayers at 7 p.m., Thursday at Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Duluth, with interment in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.
Isabella Markell Clephane Powel
Isabella Markell Clephane Powel, 84, died at her home in Hilton Head Island, S.C. on Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999.
Born in Duluth to the late John and Isabella Markell, she moved to Hilton Head in 1971. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Powel.
Survivors include her brother, John Markell Jr. of Gibson Island, Md.; and three sons, Arthur (Cheryl) Clephane of Maumee, Ohio, Robert (Kathleen) Clephane and Thomas Clephane of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Hilton Head Island at 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, tributes can be made to the American Hospice Care, 41 Goethe Road, Suite D, Bluffton, S.C. 29910 or to the American Cancer Society.
