Patricia Calhoun Falstad, 95, Edina, Minn., died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, in Edina. She was born March 17, 1903, in Superior, and was a longtime resident of Superior, Lake Nebagamon and St. Petersburg Beach, Fla. She was a graduate of Superior Central High School and was a member of the Booster Club. She was also a member of the Hammond Avenue Presbyterian Church, the Janet Hamblin Circle of the church, the Superior Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and P.E.O. Chapter AD. She was a secretary at the Door Catch Co. and the Great Northern Railroad until her marriage on July 5, 1928, to Ralph L. Falstad, a certified public accountant. The Falstads celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary the summer before Mr. Falstad’s death on Feb. 14, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary McGhie Calhoun; a son, Thomas Falstad; two brothers, James and Murray, and four sisters, Mae Gallinger Fyckes, Hazel Swanby, Willa Gallagher and Gladys Mather. She is survived by two sons, Robert (Kathy) Falstad, Hampton, N.J., and William (Peggy) Falstad, Fredonia, Kan.; a daughter-in-law, Caroline, Edina; three nephews, Jim Mather and James and Chad Calhoun; three nieces, Patty Mather Mueller, Patty Swanby Brilia and Mary Varden Gallinger Cole; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Downs Funeral Home, THe Rev. Joseph D. Brygger officiating, with interment in the Lake Nebagamon Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

William Richard Benson, 48, Brookston, Minn., died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake. He was born Sept. 18, 1949, in Superior. He was a 1967 graduate of Superior Cathedral High School and was graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He married Lisa Simi on June 8, 1985, in Culver, Minn. Mr. Benson was an active member of the community, being a supervisor of Culver Township and being involved with the Culver Fire Department. He was a mentor for youth at the Immanuel Lutheran Church and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he sang on Sundays. He was also a member of the Saginaw Alliance With Youth and a member of the Eagles in Grand Rapids. He performed weekly with "The Other Guys Band." He also enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, golf and spending time at Sampo Beach. He also enjoyed computer journalism and voicing his political ideas. Mr. Benson was a foster parent to many young men for the past 10 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine, on Feb. 3, 1995 He is survived by his wife, Lisa Simi-Benson; a son, Cory (Christine) Benson, Cloquet; a daughter, Carey (Greg) Bowles, Wayzata, Minn.; a granddaughter, Frances Anne Bowles; foster children, Danelle and Lee; his father, Capt. Otto Benson, Arden Hills, Minn.; four brothers, Thomas (Jan) Benson, Duluth; James (Diane) Benson, Solon Springs; Richard (Sally) Benson, Eagan, Minn., and Robert (Shirley) Benson, Superior; two sisters, Darlene (Glenn) Kloskin, Arden Hills, and Betty (Frank) Rominack, Superior, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m., Saturday, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Brookston. Arrangements are by the Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.

David P. Rasmussen Sr., 62, of 1020 Broadway St., died on Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in St. Francis Home in the Park. He was born in Perley, Minn., on May 13, 1936, to George A. Rasmussen and Rebecca (Booth) Rasmussen, and had resided in Superior most of life. Mr. Rasmussen had been a member of the Superior Elks No. 403, Acacia-Itasca Masonic Lodge No. 329, F & AM, Diamond City Chapter No. 65, RAM, Superior Council No. 30, Superior Commandery No. 25, Knights Templar, and AAD Temple of the Shrine, Duluth. He retired as president of Fagerlin Fuel Co. of Superior in June of 1998 and was currently chairman of the board. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan on June 13, 1998, four brothers, Billy, Eugene, James and Russell, his father, George Rasmussen, in 1952, and his stepfather, Hjalmer Jarvi, in 1998. He is survived by mother, Rebecca “Bess” Jarvi of Superior; two sons, David (Diane) Rasmussen Jr. of Superior, Tim Rasmussen in Florida; a daughter, Sandra (Timothy) Steffen of Superior; a sister, Kathryn (William) Nordquist of Superior, 11 grandchildren; three stepchildren, Jeanne (Ken) Smith, Milwaukee, Tom (Jane) Heikkila, Eyota, Minn., and Connie (Chuck) Schmit, Grand Marais, Minn.; three great-grandchildren; a stepsister, Marlene (Duane) Flynn, Duluth; and a stepbrother, Ken Jarvi, Salt Lake City, Utah. Visitation will be held on Wednesday in the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home from 9:30 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral with Rev. Scott Ludford officiating. Interment icon will be at Riverside Cemetery at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Margaret L. Jorgenson, 90, 1800 New York Ave., formerly of Lake Nebagamon, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at the St. Francis Home in the Park. Born June 8, 1908, in Chicago, she had been a longtime area resident. Mrs. Jorgenson was employed as a school teacher for many years in Lake Nebagamon, Poplar and other rural schools. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lake Nebagamon, and a former member of the Rebekah Lodge. Surviving are a daughter, Judith Shears, Bloomington, Minn.; three sons, Gerald Jorgenson, Janesville, Richard Jorgenson, Lake Nebagamon, and Donald Jorgenson, Dayton, Ohio; three sisters, Gladys Dusek, Chicago, Laura Gregory and Helen Spiro, both of Largo, Fla.; three brothers, Arthur Anderson, Gladstone, Mo., Harvey Anderson, Duluth, and Gilbert Anderson, East Carondolet, Ill.; 19 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rollin, in 1973. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Lake Nebagamon, with Rev. Lee Boleman officiating. Interment icon will be in the Lake Nebagamon Cemetery. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Harold Roy Jarvi, 69, Aurora, Colo., formerly of Superior, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, in Aurora. He was born April 19, 1929 in Superior. Mr. Jarvi was employed for 30 years by Stern’s and Roger Engineering Corporation as an IGS production supervisor. He was a member of the BPOE Aurora Lodge No. 1921. He and the former Arlene Miller were married Feb. 3, 1950, in Duluth. In addition to his wife, Arlene, he is survived by two sons, Bruce Jarvi, Aurora, and Brian (Kelsey) Jarvi, Parker, Colo.; one daughter, Barbara (Ron) Stevens, Spring, Texas; a brother, Norman Jarvi, Anaheim, Calif.; four sisters, Hazel Herter, Arlington Heights, Ill., and Sadie Peterson, Dorothy Hakkinen and Nancy Nummi, all of Superior; a granddaughter, Mandy Stevens, and grandson, Tyler Stevens, both of Spring, Texas. Services will be private with cremation being handled by the Parker (Colo.) Crematory. Winifred Emma Bakken, 83, a resident of Solon Springs since 1933, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. She was born June 15, 1915, in Duluth to Harry and Emma (Sieger) Patterson and was a 1933 graduate of Duluth Central High School. Mrs. Bakken worked as a bookkeeper for Dahlberg Power and Light Company in Solon Springs for 22 years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Solon Springs. Survivors include her daughter, Gwen (Alawi) Alhamed, Minneapolis; two grandchildren, Cindy Lou (Mike) Hill and Charles Scott Khalar, both of the Town of Highland; a brother, Donald Patterson, Duluth; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Bakken, on Dec. 18, 1972, a sister, Ella Holmes, and a brother, Lyle Patterson. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Solon Springs with Rev. Dennis Bergeson officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Edward L. Magnuson, 69, Cloverton, Minn., died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at his home. He is survived by a son, Russell (Peggie) Magnuson, Vancouver, Wash.; a daughter, Karen (Joe) Conner, Pearce, Ariz.; three brothers, Warren Magnuson, Cloverton; Leland (Judy) Magnuson, Sandstone, Minn., and Herb (Verna) Magnuson, Foxboro; a sister, Evelyn (Burt) Scott, Palmyra, Wis.; seven grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, at the Dairyland Town Hall, Pastor Steve Ward officiating, with interment to follow at the Dairyland Township Cemetery. Gerda Haagensen Biller, 82, of 2315 Banks Ave., died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born May 15, 1916, in Superior, and was a lifelong area resident. Biller was a retired elevator operator for the former Stack’s Department Store and a member of American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Retail Clerks and American Association of Retired Persons. Surviving are a sister, Signe (Carl) Larson, Superior; a stepdaughter, Betty Murphy, Racine; one brother-in-law, Warren Raaflaub, Superior; a sister-in-law, Ruth Haagensen, Corcoran, Minn.; one nephew, Peter Raaflaub, Superior; seven nieces, Marie Larson, Iron River, Barb Raaflaub Stecher, Davidsonville, Md., Susan Raaflaub Johnson, Las Vegas, Nev., Marcia Haagensen Erickson, Duluth, Carol Larson Reasbeck, Superior, Arline Haagensen Stecher, also of Corcoran, and Nancy Raaflaub Horyza, Stacy, Minn.; 10 grandnieces and grandnephews; and two great-nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jonas, in 1989, her parents, Peter and Hanna (Thorsen) Haagensen, a brother, Erling Haagensen, and a sister, Dagne Haagensen Raaflaub. Sophie M. Murkovich, 85, of 1100 Weeks Ave., died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born July 1, 1913, in Duluth, she was a lifelong Superior area resident. She was owner and operator of the former Sophie’s Beauty Salon in East End for many years before retirement. She was a longtime member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Superior and Superior Eagles Aerie No. 80 Auxiliary. Surviving are a brother, Peter Luzaich, Alexandria, Va.; a niece, two grandnieces and one grandnephew. She was preceded in death by her husband John. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial on Thursday in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Fr. Dean Buttrick as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.

Margaret “Marge” Ostrowski, 64, of 2122 Pennsylvania Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at her residence. She was born Sept. 26, 1933, in Turtle Lake, and had been a longtime resident of Superior’s Billings Park area. Her husband Frank David Ostrowski died in 1993. Mrs. Ostrowski was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. She had been employed for many years by Sivertson’s Fisheries. Surviving are three daughters, Jane Ostrowski, Necedah, Laura (Michael) Switzer, Duluth, and Marge Ann Ostrowski, Superior; one son, Kenneth (Sue) Ostrowski, Superior; two sisters, Arlene (Henry) Podgorak, Superior, and Frances (Leo) Ottino, Clintontrop, Mich.; a brother, William Quinn, Port Charlotte, Fla.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Downs Funeral Home, where visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Gerald Presuhn of Christ Lutheran Church will officiate.

Robert A. Hochrein, 52, Lake Nebagamon, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born Nov. 16, 1945, to Joseph and Lillian Hochrein in Fond du Lac. He served with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam, was a member of American Legion Post No. 0409 of Wisconsin, and was employed by Superior Wood Systems at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Mary Hatten-Hochrein, a brother, John (Billie) Hochrein, a daughter, Kimberly (Todd) Vanneste, a son, Casey (Tracy) Hochrein, an aunt, Ruth Canfield, two nephews, one niece, three stepchildren, four grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren. Services in celebration of his life will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lake Nebagamon. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.

Keith W. Fairbanks, 65, of 1500 N. 34th St., died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, in St. Francis Home South. He was born Feb. 26, 1933, in Superior, and was a lifelong city resident. Surviving are three brothers, Wilbur Fairbanks, Superior, Darrell Fairbanks, Superior, and Neil Fairbanks of Gordon. He was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Malmquist. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Francis Home South with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Verle J. Leighty, 73, of 1217 Lincoln St., died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. She was born Feb. 14, 1925, in Minneapolis, and had been a longtime Superior resident. She had been employed by the former Evening Telegram, now The Daily Telegram, as an advertising department ad layout artist. She received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota. She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Chapter BG of the PEO Sisterhood, the Northland Stitchers, the North Country Quilters, Needle-Art Guild of Duluth and Friends of the Library. She is survived by her husband, Richard E.; two sons, Stephen Leighty, Minneapolis, and Thomas (Diane) Leighty of Hayward; a granddaughter, Erica, of Hayward; two sisters, Barbara (Ralph) Ohrn, Navarre, Fla., and Virginia (Robert) Fraser, Edina, Minn.; and a brother, Hal (Joan) Bakke, Warroad, Minn. He was born June 24, 1963, in Sault St. Marie, and had been employed as a bricklayer for commercial building construction. On Sept. 15, 1995, he married Sharon Ziolkowski in Las Vegas, and they moved to Barnes where they owned and operated the Barnes Trading Post. Hough was a member of the Barnes Community Church, the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local #3 of Duluth, the BarneStormers Snowmobile Club and the Eau Claire Lakes Business Association. He was an avid snowmobiler. Survivors include his wife Sharon, Barnes; a son, Elliott Wayne Hough, Barnes; his parents Gerald and Marilyn (White) Hough, Marquette, Mich.; four sisters, Lynn (Bill) Campbell and Bonnie (Kurt) White, both of Sault St. Marie, Beth (Dave) Sliwinski, Saginaw, Mich., and SalIy (Jeff) Roo, Marquette; and many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. Merry Ellen Yoder, 58, of 1500 N. 34th St., died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, in St. Francis Home South. She was born on Nov. 9, 1939, to Raymond and Elizabeth (Selleck) Yoder in Gilman, Wis., and resided most of her life in Superior. She had attended Zoar Lutheran Brethren Church in Superior. She was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth, on Nov. 10, 1988, and her father, Raymond, on Aug. 15, 1974. She is survived by three brothers, David Yoder of Duluth, and Lowell (Bonnie) Yoder and Donald Yoder, both of Superior; and three sisters, Virginia (Richard) Heytens of Superior, Shirley (Don) Willoughby of Shoreview, Minn., and Carol (Kenneth) Berggren of Superior; one aunt, one uncle, 19 nieces and nephews and many cousins A private family service will be on Thursday, with interment to be in Greenwood Cemetery. The Rev. David Foslid will officiate. Arrangements are being handled by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

Lloyd D. McConnell, 57, Duluth, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, in his home. He was born April 11, 1941 on the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation. Mr. McConnell had been employed by Hanna Mining as a sailor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly, and his parents, Eivind and Justine McConnell. He is survived by sons, Daniel, Thomas Michael and Andrew Scott, all of Duluth; daughters, Rebecca Marie McConnell and Robin Lynn McConnell of Duluth; a brother, David E. Evensen, Duluth; one sister, Susan Marie (Raymond) Roper, Duluth; his mother-in-law, Florence Johnson; a sister-in-law, Sherry Smith; brother-in-law, Raymond Smith; and many nieces and nephew. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Union Cemetery in Hermantown with Fr. John Golobich officiating. Arrangements are being handled by the Dougherty Funeral Home in Duluth.

Michael H. Finstad, 60, of N5277 County Trunk UU, Fond du Lac, Wis., died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at his residence. Born June 7, 1938 in Superior to Palmer J. and Lillian M. (McDonald) Finstad, he married Diane E. Kramer June 5, 1965 in Appleton. Mr. Finstad graduated from Northwood High School, worked for the Soo Line Railroad, attended Spencerian College, Milwaukee, and served in the U.S. Army with the 2nd Armored Division. He was employed as a court reporter by Judge Raymond P. Dohr in Appleton and Judge Jerold Murphy and Judge John Mickiewicz in Fond du Lac for over 30 years. He was a member of the Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post No. 499 of Gordon. Surviving are his wife, Diane; two sons, Fred (Sherrie) Finstad and Dan (Tanya) Finstad, both of Fond du Lac; three grandchildren, Joseph, Keshia and Kylie Finstad; two brothers, Donald (Betty) Finstad, Gordon, and Patrick Finstad, Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Joan (James) Good, Bayfield, and Judy (Dick) Warner, Mesa, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Ted, and three brothers, Thomas, Ronald and Roger. At Mr. Finstad’s request, there will be no visitation or services. Cremation has taken place with inurnment to be in the Gordon Cemetery. Hilda M. Lahti, 88, of Superior, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. She was born Jan. 30, 1910, in Oulu and lived most of her life in the Oulu and Superior areas. Mrs. Lahti was a homemaker and loved dancing and gardening. Surviving are two sons, Ronald Lahti, Brule, and Donald Lahti, Cloquet; a daughter, Doris Suomi, Superior; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, August, two sisters and seven brothers all preceded her in death. A private family graveside service will be held in the Everrest Cemetery, Waino, with the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home handling the arrangements.

Ernest "Bud" Addison Vincent, 75, formerly of Gordon, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at the Carlton Nursing Home in Carlton, Minn. He was born Aug. 10, 1923, in Gordon to Ernest and Alma (Wold) Vincent. He graduated from Gordon High School, attended Superior State College for one year and attended Carroll College in Waukesha for two years. Mr. Vincent served with the U.S. Army in the Asiatic and Pacific Theaters during World War II. After his discharge in 1946 he moved to St. Paul where he worked for Webb Publishing Company until his retirement. He was a member of Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post No. 499 in Gordon and the American Association of Retired Persons. Survivors include two sisters, Sue Bergin, Cloquet, Minn., and Olene (John) Holt, Duluth; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Shirley Lannin, four half-brothers, Emory, Eugene, Gerald and Robert Vincent; and two half-sisters, Grace Johnson and Nellie (Lawler) Johnson. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Gordon, with Rev. David Heyser, pastor of Presbyterian Pioneer Parish, officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment icon will be in the Gordon Memorial Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post No. 499 of Gordon. Casket bearers will be Jon and Tim Bergin, John, Mark and Paul Holt and Harry Smith. Arrangements are being handled by the Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs.

Thomas H. Drinkwater, 79, Spooner, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at his home. He was born March 24, 1919, to Edwin and Rosaline (Escherich) Drinkwater in Spooner, where he was raised. He was a 1937 graduate of Spooner High School. In 1938 he enlisted in the Navy and served there until his discharge in 1960. He flew as a pilot during World War II and served through the Korean War. He was commissioned in 1943 as an ensign and discharged as a lieutenant commander. On Jan. 26, 1943, he was united in marriage to Marie Wade in Spooner. He later received a bachelor’s degree in meteorology. Following his discharge from the Navy, he operated Tom’s TV Repair in Shell Lake. He later was employed by Washburn County as a veteran’s service officer and then a probation officer with social services. He also taught math and science at the vocational school in Rice Lake for eight years. He was a former caller for the Northern Star Square Dancers. He is survived by his wife Marie; two daughters, Margaret “Peggy (Patrick Knowland), Waldorf, Md., and Cynthia June Drinkwater (James Ludtke) Eagle, Wis.; four grandchildren, Christopher, Holly Marie, Jimmy and Jamie; one great-grandson, Colton James; a brother, Eugene (Shirley) Drinkwater, Spooner; and nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Evelyn Johnson and Caroline Colbert, and a brother, Virgil. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Scalzo Funeral Home, Spooner, with the Rev. Donald J. Gribble officiating. Inurnment with military rites will take place in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., at a later date.

Ebon A. Nelson, 89, formerly of West 7th Street, Duluth, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born in South Range on April 7, 1909, and graduated from Superior Central High School and Superior Normal School. She taught school in the early country schools in South Range and Foxboro and married her husband Arthur W. Nelson on July 21, 1933, and then moved to Duluth. She had been a member of the West Duluth Women's Club. Her parents were Gust and Alma Blomberg. Surviving are one daughter, LaVonne (Edward) Eck of Esko; one son, Lester W. (Joyce) Nelson of Iron River; one brother and four sisters; four grandchildren, Amy Patenaude, Julie DuBois, Mark Nelson and Brian Nelson; one great-granddaughter, Jordyn. Visitation begins at 10 a.m., with services at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Bell Brothers Chapel, Duluth. Burial will be in Park Hill Cemetery there.

Theodore “Ted” Olaf, 73, 1701 Maryland Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, in St. Mary’s Hospital of Superior. Born Jan. 9, 1925, in Superior, and was a lifelong city resident. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married the former Lucille Turel on Dec. 30, 1950, in Superior, and they had celebrated 47 years of marriage. He was employed by the former Northern Pacific Railroad and retired in 1985 from the Burlington Northern Railroad as a switchman/brakeman after 35 years of railroad service. He was a member of the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, the former St. Patrick’s Catholic and a current member of Cathedral of Christ the King. He was also a member of the Kosciuszko Fraternal Aid Society and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, United Transportation Union. Surviving are his wife Lucille; two sons, Dave (Zelda) Olaf, Wisconsin Rapids, and Jim (Sue) Olaf, Superior; one daughter, Bernadette (Richard) Larson, Henderson, Nev.; a sister, Theresa Dzelak, Superior; and eight grandchildren, Sarah, Krista and Brianna Larson and Emily, Michael, Jamie, Katelyn and Julie Olaf. He was preceded in death by a daughter, JoAnn Olaf, in 1994; six brothers, Frank Jr., Joey, Ben, John, Raymond and Richard Olaf; and five sisters, Anna Stromko, Verna Wadd, Agnes Wold, Lorraine Zuchowski and Vicky Kubos. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, where a Catholic vigil service will be conducted at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Cathedral of Christ the King with Fr. Dan Dahlberg as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dan Zuchowski, Tim Dzelak, Richard Olaf, Farrell Peterson, Frank Stepan and Edward Stromko. Military honors will be accorded by the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post No. 847.

Mary Ella Lindvall, 76, of South Range, formerly of Duluth, died on Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at home. She was born to Roy and Jessie (Chalmers) Baker on Sept. 19, 1921, graduated from Chisholm (Minn.) High School and attended Fairview School of Nursing in Minneapolis. Lindvall practiced as a registered nurse at St. Mary's in Duluth, the West Duluth Clinic for Drs. Runquist and Halliday, and she retired in 1981 from the former Superior Memorial Hospital where she was the head nurse in the Obstetrics Department. She loved playing bridge and had belonged to several area bridge clubs. She is survived by daughters Nancy Anderson of Superior, and Mary Beth (Dewey) Pelfrey of South Range; sons Thomas and Timothy of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren Rebecca Anderson-Taylor of Duluth, Gerald Lindvall of Saginaw, Minn., Anthony and Roberta Lindvall, Blaine, Minn., Julie, Timothy II, Eric, Grant, Jessie and Ella Pelfrey of South Range; sisters Roberta Johnson of Duluth, Virginia Rudstrom of Chisholm, Katherine (Stanly) Mooster of Oregon; brothers Ralph (Mary) Baker of Woodbury, Minn., and John (Veggie) Baker of Chisholm; five great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.
