Aug 16 2005 Evalene Friend Ward, (Ma Ward), 82, of Ivydale, walked through Heaven?s gates hand in hand with Jesus on August 15, 2005. She was born on October 8, 1922, in Clay County to the late Marion and Laura Friend. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, John "Joe" Ward, and her brother, Cecil Friend. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend to all and a member of the Ivydale United Methodist Church. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, John J. and Ruth Ward, Steven Ward, and Roger and Diane Ward, all of Ivydale; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Andy Rogers of South Charleston, Joyce and Sonny (Gary) Butcher of Ivydale, and Cathy and Junior Samples of Procious; brother and sister-in-law, Lantie and Betty Friend of Ivydale; sister and brother-in-law, Jo Ann and Bud Streets of Lakeland, FL; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and special caregivers, Sally Rhodes, Charlotte McCracken, and Teresa Bass. August 3 2005 Benjamin "Benny" Stephenson, 57, of Baltimore, MD, formerly of Dixie, WV, died July 28, 2005, at Franklin Square Hospital in Balitmore following a short illness. Born on December 3, 1941, in Rainelle, he was the son of the late Eugene Klaun Faulkner and Glenna Jane Osborne Faulkner of Dupont City. He was a conductor for the Norfolk and Southen Railroad, an Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War, and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Dupont City. July 21 2005 John C. Legg, Jr., 75, of Naples, FL, died July 12, 2005 in Naples. He was born on November 19, 1929, in West Virginia, to the late John Curtis Sr. and Hattie Legg. He had lived and worked in New Jersey until moving to Naples in 1989. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, and a retired Air Traffic Controller, specializing in research and development for the industry, and a member of the Fola Missionary Baptist Church, Fola, WV. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his beloved pet, Crocket, and sister, Nina Faye King. He retired from Columbia Gas Transmission Corp., Coco, after 34 years of service, was an Army Veteran, a member of Local OCAW-Pace, and Local Union 628. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Brenda Keen King of Valley Fork; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Sandy Moore King of Pt. July 10 2005 Evelyn Carol Backus, 68, of Valley Fork, Clay County, passed away July 8, 2005, at Roane General Hospital after an extended illness. Born on September 23, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Raleigh and Rebecca Mae Salisbury Summers. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by one sister, Dortha Ann Summers, and one brother, Walter R. "Bud" Summers.
She retired as a cook from Roane General Hospital after 18 years of service.
