March 6 2004 Walter O. Taylor, 96, of Bickmore, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Montgomery General Hospital. He was born on Dec. 31, 1907, at Gilboa, Nicholas County, to the late John Cypres and Elkanie Williams Taylor. He was a retired coal miner, and was a member of Twenty Mile Baptist Church. He is survived by three sons, Leon and Garland Taylor, both of Bickmore, and Escar Taylor of Lizemores; four daughters, Arbutus Osborne of Bickmore, Arletta King of Pt. Pleasant, Shirley Groves of Craigsville, and Dianna Lively of Dog Run; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. March 5 2004 Rosa Rogers 92, of Rittman, Oh, formerly of Nebo, Clay County, WV, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, in Rittman after a long illness. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Rogers, daughter, Mary, and son, John. She is survived by her sons and a daughter-in-law, Earl and Shirley Rogers of Rittman, OH, and Jerry Rogers of Rochester, MI; daughters and a son-in-law, Carole and Larry Rayhons of Lenox, IO, and Virginia Mullins of Clay; 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren. March 5 2004 Ida M. Reed Conley, 87, of Clay, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, in Montgomery General Elderly Care. She was born on May 1, 1916, at Maysel to the late Jeremiah and Louisa Conley Reed. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her son, George B. "Ted" Reed. She was a retired cook for Young's Diner, attended Jubilee Mountain Church, and was a Pentecostal by faith. Survivors include her grandchildren, Wadsworth "Buck" Reed of New Castle, DE, Rena Hubbard of Clay, Caramae Sheldon of Sewell, NJ, and Clorinda Reed of Elkview; 8 great-grandchildren.

March 1 2004 Maude Muller Burdette, 84, of Indore, WV, died at home Feb. 27, 2004. She was born Feb. 15, 1920, at Indore, to the late John Emerson and Kezia Zipporah Holcomb Rogers. She was a faithful member of the Lizemore Church of the Nazarene, where she served for many yeas as the Sunday school secretary. Maude was a loving, cheerful, and supportive mother and friend. She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Herbert Brown; her second husband, Ted Burdette; brothers, Booker, Sibert, and Robert Rogers; sisters, Ina King and Velma Moore; and stepdaughter, Laura Gray. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Debbie Brown of Clendenin; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Glen Workman of Bickmore; one sister, Madeline Cottrell of Indore, WV; a nephew and his wife, Greg and Christy Starcher of Marmet; grandchildren, Nicholas Starcher of Marmet and Lilly Gould of Pinch; adopted daughters, Rosalynne Brown of Neevah, Wis., and Judy Edwards of Las Vegas, Nev; stepsons, Jerry Burdette of Nashville, Tenn. and Wayne Burdette of Procious; stepdaughters, Eloise Morrison of Radcliff, KY, Jackie King of Dunbar, Linda Bird of Elkview, and Sharon Samples of Culloden; and several adopted and step-grandchildren. Feb 27 2004 Maysel Marie Blankenship, 70, of Maysel, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at CAMC-General Divison. She was born on December 20, 1933, in Clay, WV, to the late Robert Kirby and Ida Jane Dawson Chapman. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters. She was a homemaker and a retired self-employed caregiver. She was a member of Maysel Missionary Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, David Morgan Blankenship of Maysel; son and daughter-in-law, David Wayne and Jennifer Blankenship of Harpers Ferry, WV; daughters and son-in-law, Ruth Hamrick Royal of Charleston and Kathy Hamrick Walker and John of Scott Depot; grandchildren, Elizabeth Royal, Susan Marie Walker, Zachary Morgan Blankenship and Joshua David Blankenship; brothers, Everett and Arthur Chapman, both of Orrville, OH, and Paul Chapman of Blue Creek, WV; sisters, Goldie Young of St. Albans, and Dorothy Daniels of Mounds, IL. Feb 26 2004 Mildred Dobbins, 81, of Burleson, TX, formerly of Clay County, was called home to Heaven on Sunday, February 22, 2004, at a local hospice house in Burleson. She was born March 18, 1922, in Clay, West Virginia, the daughter of James Arthur Holcomb, Jr., and Phoebe Dovie Jones Holcomb. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Tommy Asseff, and her second husband, Albert Dobbins. Mrs. Dobbins was a lifelong resident of Clay, and for 40 years owned and operated Friendly Department Store in Clay with her first husband, Tommy Asseff. She was a member of Clay United Methodist Church and a member of the church choir. Other membersips included the Order of The Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge. She is survived by sons, Taman Hall of North Hollywood, CA, David Asseff and wife, Kathy, of Charleston, and George Asseff of Clay; daughters, Phoebe Ramsey of Kent, OH, and Mary Witty and husband, Fred, of Burleston; brother, Worder Holcomb of Lizemores; sister, Rose King of Drennen, WV; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several special nieces and nephews. Feb 24 2004 Lewis McLaughlin, 73, of Charleston, formerly of Clay, died Monday, February 23, 2004,at CAMC-Memorial Hospital. Lewis was a Clay County educator and administrator for more than 30 years. He was a member of Maysel Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie McLaughlin. Surviving Lewis are his wife, Virginia McLaughlin; daughter Lynn Macvaugh and husband, David, of Charlotte, NC; son, Stephen McLaughlin and wife, Nancy, of Charlotte; son, Michael McLaughlin of Charleston; sister, Patsy Friend Paxton of Pawley's Island, SC; grandchildren, Stephen, Tyler, Sara, Zachary, Bo, and Julie; nephew, Greg Paxton of Pawley's Island, SC; niece, Peggy Malutinok of Boston, Mass; and many loving cousins. Feb 18 2004 Louis (L.P.) Means, 73, of Ivydale, joined his family in Heaven on Monday, February 16, 2004.
He was born in Charleston to Rufus G. and Norma Bailey Means on April 24, 1930. He was retired from the U. S. Air Force and the Kanawha County Board of Education. He was a member of the Rush Fork Community Church. He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Dorothy Louise Means, and a son, Gary Lee Means. Surviving are his wife: Mary Douglas Means of Ivydale; two sons, Robert Gene Means of Homestead, FL, and Tony Steven Means of Norfolk, VA; two daughters, Deborah Ann Frazier of Spanish Fork, UT, and Terry Lynn Means of Hurricane; stepson, Jeremy Ray Gardner of Wiscassette, ME; stepdaughter, Mary Lucinda Curry of Duck; seven grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; a niece, Diana Johnson of Grand Rapids, KS, and a nephew, David Blankenship of Charleston.

Feb 16 2004 Mr. James Wilson Reed, Sr. of Clay, WV died at his home in Charleston, WV on February 15, 2004, following a long illness. He was 76 years old. James was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Ray Reed and Lulu Wilson Reed, and two of his sons, Edward Clayton Reed and Thomas Hansford Reed. James Reed graduated from high school from Greenbrier Military School and later obtained a bachelors degree from West Virginia University. In 1952 he graduated from the College of Law at West Virginia University. Later that year James was elected as Prosecuting Attorney of Clay County, WV. James served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He was stationed at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernadino, CA. From San Bernadino he returned to Clay to serve three additional terms as Prosecuting Attorney. He Practiced law in Clay for over fifty years where he was a member of the West Virginia State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Clay County Bar Association, the West Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity. James was active in the oil and gas business throughout his career. James Reed was a member of the Clay United Methodist Church for 61 years. He was a 32nd degree Mason from Clay County Lodge No. 97 and belonged to the Scottish Rites. James was an avid fisherman all of his life and an ardent student of history. To him Elk River was a source of spiritual inspiration and inexhaustible beauty. For James Clay County was a sacred place and its people the finest to be found anywhere. All who knew James well found him to be warm, friendly, kind, personable and of a generous spirit. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, and grandfather.
James Reed is survived by his wife of over fifty years, Helen Black Reed, and his sister, Mary Reed Ward of Clay, WV. Also surviving him are his son, Dr. Charles David Reed of Palm City, FL and his son and daughter-in-law, James Wilson Reed, Jr. and Candace Eskew Reed of Clay, WV. Grandchildren are Erin Melissa Reed, Sarah Reed Johnson, James Wilson Reed, III, Brian Michael Reed, Andrew Willaim Reed, Eric Eskew Reed, Jenifer Helen Reed, and Austin Hansford Reed. Mr Reed is survived by one great grandson, Michael Anthony Edward Johnson. Also Surviving to mourn his passing are his daughter-In-Law, Melody Boggs Reed of Ivydale, WV and his brother-In-Law, David R, Black and wife, Kathleen on Minnetonka, MN. Feb 13 2004 Noble Ray Pettit, 74, died February 11, 2004, at home after a long illness. He was born July 17, 1929 in Clay County to the late Shirley and Ona Pettit. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence (Hink) Pettit. He was retired from General Motors, Lordstown, Ohio, after 22 years of service. He was an Army Veteran, having served in the US Army, 35th Infantry Division, as a Sergeant during the Korean War, earning a Bronze Star. He loved to hunt and was a well known gunsmith. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Clarice Legg Pettit; sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce (Moke) and Hilda of Ravenna, OH, Darrell and JoAnn of Garfield Heights, OH, Todd of Clay; daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Kenneth Oldham of Ravenna, OH, Cheryl and David Wert of Ravenna, OH; 9 Grandchildren; brothers, Elkins Pettit of Mogadore, OH, George Pettit of Swannana, NC, Bill Pettit of Nebo; sisters, Clara "Toots" Stonestreet and Ruth Pugh, both of Gem, WV.
