Oct 20 2006 Paul Herbert Brown, most beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, went to his home in Heaven Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at his residence at Indore. Born Dec. 2, 1934, he was the son of the late Jim and Bertha Brown. He was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Olivia Brooke Cliver, and sister, Eva Faye Brown. Paul was a life member of VFW Post 4419, Clay, and attended more bi-monthly meetings than any other member. He was a member of the Clay Lions Club, was on the board of directors of Lizemores Fire Department, a volunteer driver of the DAV van and a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was disabled in 1976, but that never slowed his support for extra-curricular activities for teens in the county, especially the Clay County High School Dance Team where he was know as the “Dance Team Grandpa.” He was also and avid churchgoer, enjoying services of various denominations and gospel sings. Survivors: his wife, Sonjie Childers Brown; daughters and their husbands, Darlene and Mike Cliver of Indore, Wanda Brown of Hurricane and Paula and CK Meadows of Gassaway; grandchildren, Allen, Alex, Heather and Jamie Brown, Heath and Christie Cliver, Joey Brown, Miriam “Blondie” Cliver, Kenton Meadows III and Kathryn and Kristen Meadows; great-grandchildren, Hollie and Christopher Brown and AJ Brown; brothers, Gale, Roy, David, Joe and Phillip Brown; and sisters, Pauline Hedrick, Rosie Jane Lucas and Betty Pullen. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, at the Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge, with the Rev. Robert Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow, with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 4419, Clay. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Oct 17 2006 Norman Ratliff, 75, of Clay, entered into rest Tuesday, October 17, 2006, at Hubbard Hospice House. Born on February 2, 1931, at Strange Creek, WV, he was the son of the late Thomas Thurman and Nancy Ratliff. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Luther, Orvin, and Ishmael, and one sister, Orpha Cummings. He was a former employee of Roseville Charcoal Manufacturing Company, Elswick Lumber and Georgia Pacific; an Army veteran, having served in the Korean conflict, where he was awarded the Purple Heart, one medal (Japan) and the Korean Service Medal with 4 bronze stars. and attended the Clay Community Church. Survivors include his wife, Georgia Ratliff of Clay; sons, Kenneth of Medina, OH, Thomas of Clay, Delbert of Ivydale, Steve of Clay, and Stanley of Nebo; daughter, Ruth Schomos of Brunswick, OH; brother, Thurmond of Duck Creek, WV; sisters, Norma Houghton of Strange Creek, Junie Myers of Harrison, and Enna Harvey of Canton, OH; 10 grandchildren; l great-grandchild. Oct 15 2006 Beulah Mullins Workman, 75, of Charleston, formerly of Clay, died October 13, 2006, at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was retired from the Clay County Board of Education. Beulah was the daughter of the late Whirlie C. and Myrtle C. Parsons Moore. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Darrell Mullins; son, Randall Mullins; brother, Beverly Moore; and sister, Patricia Rumbarger. She is survived by sons, Stephen Mullins of Charleston, David Mullins of Ripley, and Brian Workman of Elkview; daughters, Debra Wiley of Charleston, Connie Horne of Pensacola, Fla., and Billie McQuaid of Brownsville, Mich.; brothers, Creed Moore of Clendenin, and Bernard Moore of Weston; sisters, Betty Cohne of Virginia, Evelyn Smith of Virginia, Autiove Breutch of Ohio, Agnes Jurgensen of Ohio, and Lorna Cogar of Cleveland, Ohio; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Oct 13 2006 Gary A. Tanner, 52, of Duck, entered into rest October 11, 2006, at Braxton Memorial Hospital. He was born on July 30, 1954, in Parkersburg, WV. Gary was a school bus driver for Clay County Schools and attended Nebo Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Doris Tanner of Duck; parents, Arnold and Shirley Tanner of Duck; sons, Gary E. and Michael Tanner, both of Duck; daughters, Suerena Tanner of Duck, Khadijah Tanner of Duck, Chasity Cloutier and husband, Joe, of Duck; grandchildren, Bailey Neal Tanner, Christ Lynn Cloutier, and Trey Joseph Cloutier; sister, Connie and husband, Greg Meany, of Philadelphia, PA. Paul G. Duffield, 58, of Lizemores, Clay County, died Thursday, October 5, 2006, at Little Spruce in Kanawha County of injuries received from a logging accident. He was born April 23, 1948, at Lizemores to the late Jack Nathan and Goldie Virginia Duffield. He was an employee of D&R Logging Company, at Pond Gap, and a former self-employed water well driller for 25 years. He was a member of the board of directors of the Carbide Recreation Club, and a member of the UMWA. He attended The Laurel Fork Missionary Baptist Church and The Bell Creek Community Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary Elswick “P-Nut” Duffield; daughter, Virginia Ackermann and husband Mark of Wheeling; son, Daniel Duffield and wife Denise of Lizemores; grandchildren, Joshua Duffield, Karley Duffield, Tristan Duffield, and Edward Ackermann; sisters, Jocie Moore of Dixie, Macil Bird of Lizemores, Martha Bird of Dixie, and Wanda Walters of Lizemores; and brother, Jerry Duffield of Lizemores. Oct 7 2006 Orval Dennis Rogers, 83, of Albermarle, NC, formerly of Elkview, WV, and Columbia Station, OH, entered into rest October 4, 2006, at Stanly Regional Medical Center in Albemarle. Born on September 17, 1923, in Valley Fork, he was the son of the late Roy Brooks Rogers and Rosa Mae Bullard Rogers. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Denise Rogers. He was a retired millwright and safety inspector for General Motors in Brookpark, OH. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Quarry Lodge #382 (Masonic), and a member of the VFW. Sept 23 2006 Albert L. “Booney” Sommerville, 73, of Webster Springs passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, after a short illness. Booney is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Barbara; daughters, Jennifer and her husband, Jerry Cutlip, of Paden City, and Jan and her husband, Mike Smith of Hurricane; granddaughters, Milisa, Ayme, Hilary and Megan Cutlip; grandson, Jacob Smith; sister, Mary Margaret Sommerville of Webster Springs; uncle and aunt, Joe and Maxine Moore of Bradenton, Fla.; aunt, Joy Moore of Webster Springs; and many cousins and friends. Booney was a lifelong resident of Webster Springs and had a long and distinguished career of public service. He attended Glenville State College and West Virginia University for undergraduate studies and was a graduate of the West Virginia University College of Law. Upon graduation from law school, he served as an assistant attorney general under C. Donald Robertson and left that employment to engage in the private practice of law in Webster Springs. He was first elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1954 from Webster County and served in the House until 1977. While in the House of Delegates, he served as vice chairman of the Committee on Finance and chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary. He was elected judge of the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit, which includes Webster, Clay and Gilmer counties, serving from 1977 until his retirement on June 30, 1996, assuming senior status. While serving in the judiciary, he was elected treasurer, secretary, vice president and president of the West Virginia Judicial Association. In addition, he served by special assignment on the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. Booney was an avid sportsman and enjoyed immensely the West Virginia natural surrounding and his camp on the Back Fork of Elk River. He was truly a considerate, loving person who will be missed by his family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at the Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Brandon Moll officiating. He was retired from the Department of Highways with 16 years of service, a member of the Odd Fellows and a member of Rogers Fork Baptist Church. Born Oct. 12, 1933, in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Garfield and Ina Marie Hall. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Elouise Vaniman. He was a retired employee from the West Virginia Division of Highways, a Navy and Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a life member of the DAV. Billy was a born-again Christian. Sept 13 2006 Avis Houghton, 92, of Strange Creek passed away Sept. 10, 2006, at the home of her daughter-in-law, Lou Houghton. She was born Oct. 11, 1913, in Braxton County and was a daughter of the late Perry and Malissa Bail Dobbins. She was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Flem; son, Cledith; and sisters, Valerie Hamric and Mary Dobbins.
