Sept 13 2006 Ruth Fay Falls, 76, of Procious, passed away Sunday, September 10, 2006, at home. She was a homemaker. She was recently preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Homer E. Falls. Surviving are daughters, Carol Grose, Patty James, and Debora Saulsgiver; brother, Henry Harper; sisters, Alma Butcher, Laura Cook, Laverne Lyall, and Dorcie Davis; grandchildren, Heather Grose, Christopher James, Jeremy James, and Nathan Saulsgiver; and great-grandchildren, Anna and Bradley Williams. The service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at Hafer Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Davis officiating. will be in the Harper Family Cemetery, Barren Creek Rd. Sept 8 2006 Jennie Morris Drake, 86, of Ivydale, entered into rest Wednesday, September 6, 2006, at Braxton County Memorial Hospital. Born on January 6, 1920, in Ira, WV, she was the daughter of the late L. Ernie Wood and Martha Helen Turner Wood. She was a retired cook from Ivydale Elementary School, a born again Christian, and attended Ivydale Methodist Church and Ivydale Community Church. Survivors include her son, Sam Morris of Ivydale; daughters, Brenda Hamrick of Calvin and Wanda Wilmoth of Ivydale; 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be 11 am Saturday, September 9, 2006, at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay. will follow in Clay Memorial Gardens, Clay. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday.

Sept 6 2006 Mary Elizabeth McLaughlin Metz, 51, of Glen died Sept. 4, 2006, at home after a long illness. She was born May 21, 1955, at Charleston and was preceded in death by her father, Wilbert P. McLaughlin, and husband, Nelson O. Metz. She is survived by her companion, Larry Light; mother, Mary Elizabeth Myers McLaughlin; daughters and their husbands, Betsy and Tom Keiffer of Indore and Misty and Lou Fauber of Charleston; a son and his wife, Shawn and Tabitha Metz of Milton; brothers, Rusty, David, Dennis “Bub,” Wilbert and John McLaughlin; sisters, Kay Bird, Maxine Lane, Carmelia Hodge and Teresa Dunlap; and grandchildren, Felica, Clarissa, Isaiah, Eric, Elias, Ethan, Christian and Serenity. The visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. David McLaughlin officiating. will be in the Light-Westfall Cemetery, Clendenin.

Aug 31 2006 Charles Stover , 71, of Middletown, Ohio passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at 8:30 a.m. at his residence. He was born March 9, 1935 in Clay County, West Virginia and had lived in Middletown since 1966. He owned and operated Charlie's Truck Tire Service for 22 years retiring in 1982. He was preceded in death by mother: Elva Elicker Downey; wife: June Stover – July 15, 2006; 1 brother: John Sherman Downey; 1 sister: Louise Moore. He is survived by: 4 children: Douglas Nutter – Middletown, Ohio, Pamela Schafer – Middletown, Ohio, Tammy Stover – Middletown, Ohio Charles E. Stover, Jr. – Middletown, Ohio; 3 grandchildren: Lindsey Schafer – Middletown, Ohio, Steven Brown – Middletown, Ohio, Carl Schafer, Jr. – Middletown, Ohio. Visitation will be Saturday, September 2, 2006 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the Herr-Riggs Funeral Home, 210 S. Main St., Middletown. Aug 31 2006 Mary Lydia Bullard, 76, of Wallback, entered into rest Wednesday, August 30, 2006, at her home. Born on December 11, 1929, in Poe, WV, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Sherman and Gladys Mae Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Arley Bullard. She was a homemaker and attended the Clay Nutrition Center. Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda Kerr of Fowler, OH, Carolyn and Jerry Hanshaw of Wallback, Phyllis and Berlin Hunt, Mary and Ed Hamrick, and Marilyn and Harlow Hickman, all of Lizemores; sons, Donald Johnson of Drennen, Tony Bullard of Wallback, and Donald Bullard of Procious; 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 12 great- great-grandchildren; and special family friend, Clarence Falls of Wallback. Graveside service will be 1 pm Friday, September 1, 2006, at the Hively Cemetery, Valley Fork, with Minister Jerry Hanshaw officiating. There will be no visitation. Aug 25 2006 Linda Joyce (Wilmoth) Tracy, 59, of Clay, entered into rest August 23, 2006, at CAMC-Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Charleston. Born on October 21, 1946, in Mullins, she was the daughter of the late Henry Lee and Reba Wilmoth. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her son, Douglas B. Tracy. She was a payroll supervisor for the Clay County Board of Education and a member of Belle Creek Baptist Church, Dixie. Survivors include her husband, Billy Joe Tracy of Clay; son, David Lee Tracy of Monroe, NC; grandson, Sloan Douglas Tracy of Monroe, NC; brother, Keith Dewayne Wilmoth of Lizemores; sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise and Kenneth Vanmeter of Belva, Shirley and Kenneth Price of Lizemores, Vickie and Dean Smarr of Hurricane, and Cynthia and Tim Moore of Oak Hill; several nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved. Graveside service will be 1 pm Saturday, August 26, 2006, at Clay Memorial Gardens, Clay, with Minister Kenneth Tanner officiating. Friends may call from 11 am til 1 pm on Saturday at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay.

Aug 17 2006 Bertha Valder, 85, of Ivydale, entered into rest August 17, 2006. She was a retired cook from White Castle and was a member of Elk River Baptist Church. Bertha was born in Braxton County on May 27, 1921, to the late Garfield and Cora McCumbers. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Russell Copen, and one grandson. She is survived by her son, Russell “Gene” Copen of Nebo; daughter, Corraine Woods of Ivydale; 3 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be Saturday, August 19, 2006 at 11:00 am at the Hardman Cemetery, Nebo, WV, with Rev. Donald Dawson officiating. There will be no visitation. Aug 8 2006 Kevin Scott Braley, 44, of Ivydale, died August 4, 2006, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. He was born on August 19, 1961, in Elyria, OH Kevin was a self-employed contractor, and an Army Veteran. Survivors include his father, Golden Braley of Lakeville, OH; mother, Bessie Braley of Duck; sons, Kevin Scott Braley II, Brandon G. Parker Braley, and Zachary E. Braley; daughter, Shannon Nicole Braley; brothers, Michael W. Braley of Lakeville, OH, James Braley of Wheeling, and Brian Legg of Duck; sister, Susan Knoll of Grafton. There will be services held in Cincinnati, OH, on Thursday, August 10, 2006. Local funeral services will be 2 pm Friday, August 11, 2006, at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay. will follow in the Legg Cemetery, Harrison. Friends may call 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Aug 7 2006 Dora Jean Jarvis, 76, of Maysel, died Saturday, August 5, 2006, at home after a long illness. She was a retired Educator having served as Principal of Clay Elementary School and H.E. White Elementary School in Clay County and Bridge Elementary School in Kanawha County. After many years of teaching in both Clay and Kanawha Counties she retired from Clay County Schools. Jean received her B.A. in education from WV State College and attended Marshall University then WVU where she earned her Masters Degree in Elementary Education. She was a member and officer of Clay Lions Club where she received both the Leonard Jarrett and the Melvin Jones awards, a member of the Clay Golden Delicious Festival Board of Directors and it?s Treasurer, a founding member of the Clay County Youth and Agricultural Fair, Secretary and longtime member of Francis Chapter No. 28 Order of the Eastern Star, and a Member of Fairview Baptist Church, Clay, WV. Jean was born May 19, 1930 to Leonidas Burton Sears and WV Engle Sears of Corton, WV. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Jean Ann Walker and brother, Paul Avis, William Hale, Buel, Roland Claire, Leonidas B. Jr., and John B. Sears. Surviving Jean is her husband Donald H. Jarvis, son William Ronald Walker Jr. of Maysel, daughter Eleanor Sue Butcher of Procious, Stepson Jeffery Jarvis and wife Betty of Key Largo, Florida, Stepdaughter Alice Ann Jarvis of New Castle, Delaware, Foster children Joseph Myers of Dunbar and Janet Starcher of Maysel. Surviving are, Sisters; Virginia Ruth Samples and husband Wayne of Procious, Billie Robinson and husband Harry of Clendenin, Jackie Pierson and husband Bill of Clay, and Patty Jackson and husband Clifford of Clendenin. Brother Walter Irwin Sears of Bellevue, OH., Jean had 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Hospice, especially Pat, Kristen and Sandy. Also we wish to thank her loving caregivers niece Joretta Gary, Patty Dulaney, Tracy Sizemore, and all the others who helped in any way. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Carl Wilson Funeral Home Clay, with Minister Dennis Legg officiating. will be in the Amma Cemetery, Amma WV. Aug 5 2006 Tommy Keiffer Sr. 81, of Indore, WV passed away Friday, August 4, 2006. He was a loving husband and father. For 39 years he worked hard to support his family as a coal miner. He gave us all a name to be proud of. Tommy honored his word and taught us how to meet challenges, accept disappointments and enjoy life. He tickled us and spanked us, but most of all he loved us. We all love and miss him very much. He is survived by wife Pearl of 59 years, 14 children Evie Jones, Teddy Keiffer, Tommy Keiffer Jr., Kathia Shaffer, Sandra Ward, Kenneth Keiffer, Patricia MacFarland, Robert Keiffer, Barbara Hodge, Mary Ball, Cindy McCallister, Elana Keiffer, Donald Keiffer and Joe Keiffer. He has 31 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, Brothers Earl Lee Keiffer, and Bearley Snow, and sister Daisy Weathers. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, August 6, at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, WV. Funeral service will be 11:00 am Monday, August 7, 2006 at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, with Minister Jadie Morris officiating. will follow in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow, WV.

Aug 5 2006 Carolyn Elaine “Tootsie” Rogers, 56, of Clay, went home to be with the Lord at the home of her daughter, Alisha Hamilton, in Spotsylvania, VA, surrounded by her loving family. Born on June 23, 1950, in Clay, she was the daughter of the late C. Earl and Ruby Gray Carte. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her nephews, Robert “Robbie” Carte II, David Allen Summers, great-nephew, Aaron Blake Nottingham. She served in the WV National Guard. She was a waitress for many years before becoming the co-owner of Town and Country Diner in Clay, and attended Jubilee Mountain Church in Clay. Carolyn is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Alisha and Jared Hamilton of Spotsylvania, VA, Joesette and Eugene Grubbs of Point, TX, Andrea and Rob White of Spotsylvania, VA; grandchildren, Corina, Tabatha and Conner Grubbs, Hunter Bowman, Jorja and Kyle White, Caleb, Brandon, and Austin Hamilton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra Carte Adkins of Clay, Linda and Allen Stephenson of Clay, Wanda and Roger Chapman of Roane County, Beverly and Johnny Stewart of Clay, and Ronda and Kevin Dennis of Clay; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Connie Carte of Indore, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Graveside service will be 11 am Sunday, August 6, 2006, at Clay Memorial Gardens, Clay, with Sister Anne Huddleston officiating. Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, is in charge of arrangements.

August 3 2006 Evaline Hubbard, 80, a life long resident of Bickmore, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 2, 2006, after a long illness. Born of March 1, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Alice Marie Starcher. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Tom “Jack” Hubbard; son, Donald; sisters, Wavie, Dorthy, and Cricket; brothers, Donald “Bud” and Paul. She was a member of Bickmore Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was a devoted mother who loved all her children. Surviving are her sons, Larry, Jackie, Steve, Tommy, Ronald, and Jerry, all of Bickmore and Charles of Conover, NC; daughters, Betty Jo of St. Albans, Gladis of Venice, FL, Connie of Lizemores, Nadine of Kingsport, TN, and Lisa of Morganton, NC; sisters, Mary Greathouse of Widen, Brenda Morris of Gauley Bridge, Gene Starcher of Gauley Bridge, Donnie Hinkle of Wooster, OH; brother, Jerry Starcher of Blue Knob; 2 granddaughters, 20 grandsons, 4 great-granddaughters, 9 great-grandsons. Funeral service will be 11 am Saturday, August 5, 2006, at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, with Minister Ralph Lane officiating. will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Bickmore. Friends may call from 6 to 9 pm on Friday at the funeral home.

August 1 2006 Carolene Marie Samples, 68, of Bomont, WV entered into rest Sunday, July 30, 2006. Meeting her at the Gates of Glory were her parents, Dorothy and Lee Shaffer and her brothers, Edward and Lawrence Shaffer. Carolene recently returned to West Virginia to be with her family after spending several years in California and most recently, New Bern, NC where she was active with the Ladies Auxiliary of the local VFW post. She leaves a void in the hearts of many dear friends there. Carolene leaves behind her children, Donald McNeiland of Grand Cayman Islands, Alan McNeiland of South Carolina, Rose Cantrell of Bomont, WV, Ty Samples of Rainelle, WV, and Arthur “Sparky” Samples of North Carolina. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Joshua, Adam, Savannah, Melody, Montana, Bradley, Tori, Cierra, Shana, Kevin, Michael and James as well as her sister, Kay of Texas and her brother Bill of Elkview. Service will be 4pm Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at Pine Grove Church, Fraziers Bottom, WV with burial following in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2pm until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 301 RHL Boulevard, Charleston, WV 25309. Carolene touched the hearts of all she met and enriched the lives of many. The world is a dimmer place without her smile in it, but Heaven just got a little brighter. July 31 2006 Allen "Pain" Wayne Mitchell of Bomont, WV entered into rest on Saturday July 29, 2006 at CAMC Memorial Hospital. Allen was born on Feburary 28, 1951 in Odessa, WV to the late Dempsey " Tobe" and Amanda Mitchell. Allen was a retired Truck Driver, he was a Member of the Reamer Gospel Tabernacle in Clendenin, WV. He was also a Army Veteran of the Vietnam War were he recieved a Purple Heart. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Alfered Mitchell. Allen is survived by his Son Allen W. Mitchell Jr. of Bomont, WV. Sisters, Phylis Taylor of Clendenin, WV; Donna Jean Hall of Bomont, WV; Shirly Faulkner of Bomont, WV; Carolyn Sue Barker of Bomont. July 29 2006 Lawrence Berton Happney, 84, of Bickmore, entered into rest July 28, 2006, at home. Born on November 1, 1921, in Vaughan, he was the son of the late Albert and Nellie Happney. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, Jackie Leonard Happney; brother, Damon Happney, and sister, Opal Brown. He was a retired laborer from the West Virginia Department of Highways, a U. S. Army Veteran of WWII, having served in the European Theater, a member of Clay VFW Post 4419, and attended Lick Fork Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Gay Happney of Bickmore; children, Junior Happney of Bickmore, Jimmie Happney of Fayetteville, NC, Patricia Happney of Marlinton, Alice Whipkey of Charleston, Nellie McKown of Wallback, Sharron Schrader of Lenoir City, TN, and John Happney of Hopewell, VA; 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be 10 am Monday, July 31, 2006, at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, with Minister Herbert Vance officiating. will follow in the Holcomb Cemetery, Indore, with military graveside rites conducted by Clay VFW Post 4419. Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.
